"Consulting. Yes, nmap is used every time we do a pen, it's the most obvious choice. There's a ton of other tools for both network and apps; although all you need most of the time of apps is just a browser and a proxy. I would say build your own lab and get experience on the tools. If you can't do multiple machines, just use virtual machines and scan way... Check out OWASP, Pauldotcom, EthicalHacker, SANS, SecurityFocus etc. etc."
