There's a reason that staff christmas parties need to be dry.
- DJF
Can't say I've had to have that one happen here...yet. But we did have some boys "decorate" the downstairs bathroom one night.
- Abigail
Ooph. I have to know, did someone witness this or find out the hard way that the furniture had been peed on?
- Rachel Walden
The worst we've had biohazard-wise lately is students leaving banana peels on the floor or on the computer tables. We have had students with anger management issues kick in the walls in our men's room. All the walls in that room are now plywood instead of drywall, most of it tiled some just painted.
- John Dupuis
Rachel - Witnessed. When guards & my 3rd shift super woke him up, he was still intoxicated & urinated on the leather seat & floor. The amazing thing is that this actually happens really rarely - happened way more when I was at Kentucky than here!
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
ωαřмaiden - so he basically pissed himself when woken up, rather than intentionally urinating on the chair?
- Michael R. Bernstein
yeah he did. we're not sure we can bill him for the cleaning, but we're gonna try. It was one of those things that happens when someone drinks way too much. Im sure it wasn't intentional, he jut lost control. Nonetheless, it defaced the library's property.

What does it say about my sons that their block buster Christmas gift, the one they will be most excited about, this year is a collection of books? - http://search.barnesandnoble.com/The-Com...
The Complete Calvin and Hobbes is their big gift, and I think they will be very excited. It is just interesting that they are at an age where most of what they will recieve is either a book or a game. I think they've read most of Calvin and Hobbes already, but this edition will make sure they haven't missed anything
- RAPatton
I wonder if I should put some of my book tokens towards that...
- Pete
Funny, my wish list is all books and games and I'm 31!

Exactly, Kyle; they are growing up.

My kids LOVE Calvin and Hobbes. LOVE. They sit there reading them for hours. Actually, the voice that my oldest son uses to read the part of Calvin is quite annoying. :-D

Cause these books are AWESOME and they have good taste.

It means your sons are the big awesome! LOVE!!!!

I'd really like to get my hands on the Peanuts collections. The early stuff is so different than the late stuff.
- Spidra Webster
That they are as awesome as my girls who read the Calvin & Hobbes books reapeatedly for several years. And that they will have an enhanced vocabulary as a result.
- Rochelle Rochelle
My wife's been buying me these kinds of collections for Christmas for a few years now. I've got this one, The Far Side and a good chunk of the early Peanuts.
- J Wynia
I was always most excited about the books that I received at the holidays. Good for you and them.

I call BS. In this book, theyve been on the lam for 2 weeks, running hither and yon, all bruised, barely showered. They get it on and "he ran his hand down her smooth leg"? No, he didnt. "He ran his leg down her furry, furry leg". Let's be real.
So....if I can get an interview with these people for the third week in January, can I write my upcoming vacation off as a business trip? :-p

I went to P&F---liked it very much and would go again

I'm gonna take Mr. 7 on Christmas Eve day, I think. It looks like it could be fun. Also looks like it could be deeply annoying. Anyway, yeah, we are still good.

Is it a librarian thing not to be interested? I'm not at all, either.

i'm not a librarian, but i have alot of librarian friends and both my parents used to teach English at KU in the 60s (my dad worked for the university library there before that).

If you don't need noise cancellation, the Sennheiser PX100 folding headphones (on-ear, not in-ear) have very good sound and pack nicely. (That's what I use.) If you need noise reduction, something in-ear would probably be better; sorry, but no experience. (The Sennheisers should cost $49.50.)
- Walt Crawford
Just asked a friend (headphone expert who spends more than I could dream spending on his headphones) about this last week. He recommended Sennheiser 300x for affordable, quality headphones.
- J450N
My son just gave me Sony noise cancelling headphones as a gift - under $40! A few reviews rate them as the best noise cancelling headphones under $50. http://bit.ly/69wpXF I'm sure they're not as good as the Bose, but I think they are pretty good.
- steven bell
i think i got my sharper image bose knock-offs for between $35 and $50. i really, really like them and don't know what i'd do without a set of noise cancellers.
- Katie
Katie--the ones I'm seeing on SI require a battery?? Do yours?
- Abigail
Thanks for the recommends coming in so far--I'm happy to make a decent investment..just not bank breaking considering I'm known to lose the occasional headset--hence not Bose...
- Abigail
Yep, 1AAA for the noise-cancelling effect. You can get away without one if you don't want to use the nc.
- Katie
I was just doing a bit of research on over the ear portable headphones. The Sennheiser PX100/PX200 are good. I ended up ordering the Koss PortaPro. The Koss KSC75 gets a lot of good reviews too.
- Rodfather
I like Porta Pros, but for an airplane ride, if you can tolerate in-ear earphones, I think those are way better than active noise cancellation, not that I've tried active cancellers. Senn cx300s or something else good. (I don't like to recommend Sony because of the "Sony timer"; specifically the Fontopia earphones I had where the headphone cable insulation was apparently made to dissolve on contact with water.)

i noticed the depaul one more because my great-aunt used to be head librarian there, and my mom started her library career working for her (great-aunt) when she (mom) was in high school. i sooo do not have the qualifications for it, though.

Yeah, I'm seeing a LOT of director type positions too, but it does seem like there have been marginally more in the last, say, month o so.
- ÉllbeeÇee
Rachel and Meredith and I and others all told librarianship it was eating its young and would regret that. Now the bill comes due, it seems.

Goes back to Jenica's post on management and our violently negative views of it, I t hink
- Abigail
that's part of it to be sure, but I also think that deprofessionalization/elimination of entry-level jobs over the last five years and a consequent lack of mentoring/grooming of entry-level libns is also in the mix
- D0r0th34
True..there's no one around here for me to manage which makes it a bit tough to get multiple years of management experience. I have uber awesome Mesdames Director/Storyteller tho to talk about boss type experiences.

Finished first shift as a volunteer at the public library today in Burbank. Liked it a lot. Staff and patrons were very nice. A couple of the volunteers clearly take their work VERY seriously and reminded me of Tracy Flick, the role immortalized by Reese Witherspoon in the feature film, "Election".
Yay! Glad you're getting some experience in! Just wait, the crazy will kick in....

multi-colored definitely. and the old fat bulbs, not those tiny ones you can hardly see. that's what i grew up with - fat multi-colored bulbs.
- Christa
We always had multi-coloured on the Christmas tree, but my mother was adamantly against anything that blinked or twinkled or did anything cool, so that sort of fun was not to be had. Other small indoor trees we had were decorated mostly with all white bulbs, though.
- Katy S
I cant handle anything that twinkles. I like static lights. Christa, those bulbs were also what my aunt had while i was growing up. We were always afraid the tree would burn down because they got so hot!
- Mary Carmen
I have always liked colored lights. Betsy likes white...thus, we have a pre-lit white tree. UNTIL THIS YEAR, when Eliza broke the tie and we had to add colored lights. I win!
- Jason Griffey
outsiide, i love multi-colored (esp. against teh snow). inside, we have all white, but that's really just cuz they were on sale, and all my ornaments are silvery - so it makes for a very "classic" tree. note: i ain't never "classic".
- jambina
I like all white on the tree. and outside whatever coloured - this year I have all blue on the little shrub. last year it as multi-colour.
- Nathalie, Dreamer of FF
I'm all white on the tree and multi elsewhere at the moment, but I'm not locked into any particular look.
- Michael W. May
Mary - I don't necessarily want them now, but as a kid I did because we were forbidden to have them. One year we colluded with my dad to get a set of lights for the tree that had 8 modes of action. We didn't tell my mom. When she wasn't looking we'd always switch it from no movement to one of the waves or flickers. She was a bit annoyed with us that year. The only thing that saved us was the fact that it had that one option she likes.
- Katy S
Katy, that is hilarious. My mom would never allow that. I can handle slow twinkling, but omg, some of the settings nowadays are like TECHNO.
- Mary Carmen
umm... at work white or blue to match the circ desk. at home i think multi? i don't remember.
- Kendra <3 Three Lions
She also doesn't like it when my dad and I play the Tales From The Crypt album Have Yourself A Scary Little Christmas. We tend to crank up Deck The Halls With Parts Of Charlie in honor of my dad's older brother, Charlie. We are not allowed to play it in her presence, so when I'm at their house and she leaves, my dad and I turn it on right away.

multicolored on the tree and white outside
- Abigail
On my balcony I have multi-colored, but at the twist of a dial they can be changed from all white to multi-colored or transitioning back and forth (also steady or blinking.) Alas, my apartment complex has several of those humongous inflatable Santas, snowmen, etc. so there is no hope for nuanced Holiday decoration around here.
- Mark "DerBingle" J
black (looking at them though, you can see the red filament, does that make them multi?)
- chaz2b
We always had multi-lights, but I've grown to love all white (or blue). I think they are so elegant, and more natural, which I love. I can't stand "moving" and flashing lights. If I wanted a migraine or a seizure I would find another way to get one thanks. LED ftw!!! <3
- Heather
I have a single strand of multi-colored randomly flashing (literally - the whole string does not flash together) lights on my tree. They were on our tree when i was growing up, but one year my mom declared that we would have white lights only. My MIL is apparently * adamant* about white lights only. I love th C9 bulbs for putting on my house :)
- ~Courtney F.
I recently bought multi-colored lights for my swingin' bachelor pad. It didn't even occur to me to buy all-white. I like lots of color. If I wanted all white, I'd move to a small town in Kansas. http://instantrimshot.com/

Am butting heads with my head of electronic resources over the idea of database widgets. My feeling is that they can really increase usage, and that they fit in with the theme of providing library resources "where they are." He's worried about a few things - one, people not having the technical know-how to embed widgets, and thus screwing them up -
and two, that this will mean there will be a number of additional access points - some of questionable quality, then - that he won't have any control over, but will have to provide service for. He's very hesitant about this, and I understand why - I don't want to increase the workload for him and his team. But I also feel that if we don't take advantage of these, we're missing out on a great opportunity to increase usage of our resources, and make some "wins" with the faculty and students. What are your thoughts? Is there a compromise to be found?
- Laura H.
Where would these widgets go? I talked to a woman at ALA Unconf who kept elaborating her use of widgets but I couldn't figure out how they were being used without just making things really really cluttered and confusing.
- Abigail
Two places, primarily - into our LibGuides, and into Blackboard. Into the LibGuides as makes sense for a particular discipline, etc., and into Blackboard as makes sense to an instructor.
- Laura H.
I should note I'm heavily pushing other kinds of "widgets" - LibGuides content boxes, a Summon search box, a catalog search box, reference chat, etc.
- Laura H.
Wow you're talking about two places where you guys have control -- BB and LG -- and he still protests? What a pain. Who's building the widgets? Or do they exist already?
- Joan
Many of the widgets exist already, and it's just a matter of copying and pasting - Credo, JSTOR, etc. But he's afraid that something is going to get lost in the translation. And to be fair, we had to beat the librarians over the head with heavy rocks to get them to realize how to "copy link location" in order to get the correct database links for their guides.
- Laura H.
It doesn't seem like you have the staff support to accomplish this on either side. One side wants a lot of control and wants to do it his or her way, and the other side has no idea how to do it. Am I reading that correctly? You may have to rethink the strategy. I agree with placing the widgets where the users are, but they will get mad if it doesn't work.
- Jeff Scott
Could you give it a try with, say, one LibGuide and one Blackboard course? Or maybe just a couple of LibGuides?
- Joan
I ended up conceding to my coworker. I think Jeff has it right. I'm more than willing to demonstrate how to do it - it is generally a matter of copying & pasting - but clearly, people will mess that up. And we have past experience to prove that.
- Laura H.
We have chat widgets embedded on all our research guides pages, as well as on catalogue pages with no search results. Embedding it was simply a matter of taking the embed code the vendor gave us, which funnels all requests to QuestionPoint, but then our site is template based (Expression Engine) and not static HTML. Although I imagine it could be done with an include file as well... hm....

I know that is hard to wait on a project you think would be great for your library and your patrons. Sometimes it is best to wait and regroup. It's like Odysseus in the crashing waves. He was so close to the shore, but if he went in right away he would end up on the rocks. Sometimes it is better to swim back out to sea and regroup.

Anyone still need a Google Wave invite? I got a bunch. You too can get very excited, then try it out, then wonder what it's supposed to do, then get bored with it and forget about it till someone on Twitter mentions it. All this excitement/non-excitement can be yours!
Has anyone gotten an invitation, logged in, done nothing, and then forgotten about it? I mean, I would never do that or anything. But maybe someone else has?
- Joan
Google Wave invites are the Beanie Babies of Library 2.0
- Rochelle Rochelle
Heck, Liam, for the right amount I'd take one. Unless that also required doing something with it... (Rochelle: Are you sure Google Wave invites aren't turning into the AOL CDs of Web 2.0?)
- Walt Crawford
That definitely works, too, Walt. Beanie Babies came to mind because any time I do a house de-clutter I come across at least one cache of BBs, from Miss 16's multi-year BB mania.

Actually, Rochelle, Beanie Babies is better: Highly desired at one point, not so much later on. I don't remember any time that AOL CDs were highly desired...
