Nielsen, M.: Reinventing Discovery: The New Era of Networked Science. - http://press.princeton.edu/titles...
In Reinventing Discovery, Michael Nielsen argues that we are living at the dawn of the most dramatic change in science in more than 300 years. This change is being driven by powerful new cognitive tools, enabled by the internet, which are greatly accelerating scientific discovery. There are many books about how the internet is changing business or the workplace or government. But this is the first book about something much more fundamental: how the internet is transforming the nature of our collective intelligence and how we understand the world. Reinventing Discovery tells the exciting story of an unprecedented new era of networked science. We learn, for example, how mathematicians in the Polymath Project are spontaneously coming together to collaborate online, tackling and rapidly demolishing previously unsolved problems. We learn how 250,000 amateur astronomers are working together in a project called Galaxy Zoo to understand the large-scale structure of the Universe, and how they - Heiko Spallek
Tomorrow's Professor Email Newsletter: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning as "Research" - http://cgi.stanford.edu/~dept-c...
In this issue, Rick Reis discusses the status of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in evaluations for tenure and promotion decisions. I believe it reflects what many of us have experienced one way or the other: T/P guidelines are often inclusive when it comes to pedagogical scholarship, but the interpretation of these guidelines are a different matter. Or, to put it more bluntly: There are not many R01s in the realm of SoTL, but these NIH grants are the ones which really count. In the newsletter you will find the statement that "Even though […] university rules for scholarly activity clearly included 'writing and research with respect to pedagogy and innovative teaching,' there were chairs for whom 'the predominance of discipline based research as the traditional vehicle for promotion seemed to overshadow any consideration of SoTL affiliated activities.'" The recognition of SoTL as potential pathway to academic advancement can motivate faculty to get involved in researc - Heiko Spallek

MySecureCyberspace: Home - https://www.mysecurecyberspace.com/
Inspired by the President's National Strategy to secure cyberspace, the MySecureCyberspace initiative empowers users to secure their part of cyberspace. The initiative is made up of two major projects: an informational Web portal and an interactive educational game. The portal, located at www.MySecureCyberspace.com, provides customized information to home users about cyber-security threats, in addition to tactical countermeasures and legal, ethical, and privacy issues related to each cyber-security threat. Carnegie Cadets: The MySecureCyberspace Game reaches out to elementary school children through a series of training missions that reinforce principles of safe and responsible computing. Through presentations, conferences, and collaborations with schools and community centers that are centered on the MySecureCyberspace initiative, Carnegie Mellon CyLab and the Information Networking Institute work to raise public awareness of cyber-security. - Heiko Spallek
