Ha, so that's what I read about FF command line... I like it, but he... I like command lines... - Egon Willighagen
@brandon: yes - activites (i said smart tags before - oops). but i'm not sure they have the same 'angle.' seems like (since i've not tried Ubiquity) is user interface and that activities is a programming interface. - MikeAmundsen
this is yubnub done right. heck someone can make a simple bridge to yubnub :). What will be "dangerous" about this Ubiquity is its viralness. People will immediately shares commands. Hopefully not worm and viruses. - Akhmad Fathonih
Just installed Ubiquity and love it. I've not used IE for years and don't plan to. - Brett Nordquist
I installed it last night and I just love it, go on Moz crew!!! - darussol
IE8 makes all the websites I visit look like complete crap. If they're asking developers to use tags in their HTML so that IE8 will think it's IE7, that can't be a good sign. - Aaron Myers
I've been using YubNub and Slickrun for many months -- I'm not sure yet that Mozilla Ubiquity is a significant step forward. - Sean McBride
What Mozilla's Ubiquity ? Any link to share? - Arjun
UbiQ blows my mind away. Have been playing around with it all day. Just hoping that they imprve usability in the coming versions.
Tweeting from UbiQ is a breeze, I'm guessing this is going to increase load on Twitter APIs like crazy! - Vinodh
I installed Ubiquity late last night, and yes, it does have the WOW factor for me as well. I want to see how easy it is to create commands, after viewing the vid. Nice work. - Henry Burger via twhirl
It sounds great for power users. I was also imagining a sidebar type app that would be suggesting things to do with stuff. Select an address and it would pop up a map and give you the option to email it. This way no need for new users to know text commands or have to think what might be the word to use. - John Cooper
Sidebar is a great idea...also "chaining" commands. What if i want to tinyurl something (or two) and insert into a twit (or email..). Also if you don't use gmail (gasp), launching the OS native URL handlers like mailto:. - Richard Goodwin
Ubiquity looks cool, but is very similar to what can be done with Quicksilver on Mac. - Martin Añazco
if you like ubiquity you'll be sure to love http://www.humanized.com/enso that's Aza Raskin's work before he joined mozilla, so you can see where the inspiration comes from :) - Chris Jones
watching the video for ubiquity @ mozilla labs now .... whoa - JohnBfromMemphis
I am yet to try out Ubiquity yet but your WOW has convinced me to check it out later ha! - Joe Dawson
Where do these smart people come from. Very cool. - Kenley Neufeld
this changes the way I can work... but what motivates me to change this way. - Stewart Rogers
Anybody found a FF Ubiquity command to subscribe to yet? - Grey Drane
help me, the editor is making me want to learn code. ARRRRRRGH! - (teh)Kenny
It's addictive, much like 'Launchy'. - Vinay | विनय
Yeah I love ubiquity too! Wonder what 1.0 will be like! :D - JegerPhil - Phil
If you're running Ubiquity on Linux, I would advise NOT setting the hotkey to SHIFT+SPACE. Esp. if you're fond of capitalisation... - wyclif
@Martin Añazco ya, it reminds me of Quicksilver and the command-line, too. I really love it!!!! It creates an awesome workflow that leads to inspired power browsing. - barce
Now, now boys. Play nice. I grew up in the States so for me those comments are just silly but for some citizens of the True North, them's fighting words. :) - Abby Martin
actually canada is the second biggest country by land area (just behind russia) - if this whole global warming thing ever takes off, they will be the big winners :P http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L... - bob
well, "just" behind it by 7Msq km, or almost half, or by an area larger than all but 6 countries. - j1m
I'm so annoyed by this article, the title is effed and MA is pure hating on Canada :# - Mo Jawhari
haha j1m, perhaps i shouldve used 'only' - the point being that just because its mostly empty doesnt mean that canada is small :P - russia will be an even bigger winner with the global warming - bob
the concept of Humanized Enso further developed... Aza Raskin rocks! - Adarsh
WOW! just installed and am totally blown away - benton yetman
Love Aza Raskin's work...always quick to show there is so much room for improvement in making all this wonderful technology usable. - Devlin Dunsmore via twhirl
This just looks fantastic. Can't wait to play around with it. - J. McConnell
This will be huge, IF we can get people to understand the power of keyboard shortcuts. Off to install! :) - Richard Goodwin via twhirl
Just tested it in Ubuntu. Awed! Way better than greasemonkey. More powerful than Yubnub. Better user experience than AlchemyPoint. And the documentation is witty too. Kudos to the good people of Ubiquity. This one promises a lot. It surely rocks in my world! That's why I like to follow Scoble. Don't know him, and probably never will, but it's less likely that I'll lose the next big thing ;) Thank you friendfeed community! - Guillaume
I've just tested it...it is a beta indeed, but really really cool! - darussol
Too bad it isn't fully supported on Linux. I wonder why they don't use Firefox functionality to display the notifications, so it could be completely cross-platform. - J. McConnell
This is completely awesome. It's like Quicksilver for everything else. - Andrew Burd
dang their logo looks like a slight rip off of mine. don't make me change my logo on another business. :( - faboo mama
I'd like one, if I may: stellina at me dot com. Thanks. - Stellina
sent to the 2 after me. no more invites. :) - AJ Batac (Yoda)
I've just sent invites to Andrew and Stellina - Benedikt Koehler
Thanks for the invites, I've got 3 to pass on if anyone needs it. Quickest way is to email me with an appropriate subject. http://bit.ly/email_ancyru - Andrew Trinh
I have two, too. Heck, you can have my account, so make that three! - Mona N. via fftogo
@Will Ponder and @Nick Cowie - sent my 2 invites to you. One of you, or somebody else, can take care of @Alexander Rode and continue the chain. - TDavid
@Alexander Rode invite sent, thanks @TDavid - Nick Cowie
The above is essentially a baseline Mac Pro replicated using the cheapest minimum required components to build. The difference? A negligible $5.67. Those who claim that they can build "the same" PC for half the price are at this point baseless. Also note - Leo Laporte
Heh... I tend to agree with 90% of the comments over the author's conclusions ;) - Michael W. May (Joffi) via twhirl
Agree with the comments: "If you're stupid enough to pay retail for a Dell, then Apple just might be the computer for you." and then "The author's main point is that Macs are similarly priced to PC's. Then halfway through the article, he states that MAC prices are at a premium because it's from a top-shelf manufacturer and it is sold to cater to a "lifestyle." Did you read the article before you posted Leo or just stopped at the headline? - Johan Lieu
Aphorisms come to mind. 'Cat amongst the pigeons'. Fanboys unite. - Henry Burger
A quick way to save $177.49 would have been to install Leopard instead of Vista. - David Lounsbury
Even during the times when Macs are significantly more expensive than similarly spec'ed PC's, you can never put enough emphasis on the app's that come pre-installed on the Mac, right out of the box, and just as important, the visual appearance and design that goes into making them look... well, I know it's just personal taste, but Macs just look great. - Thomas Raymond Tibbitts
"Cramer says Philly is many a photographer's muse, and for good reason. "It's a big, architecturally and economically diverse city," he says. "You go to New York and it's like, yeah, there are 10,000 pictures a day taken of the steaming coffee cup in Times Square. But a good shot of the rail yards outside 30th Street Station or Mustin Field down by the Navy Yard is unique."" - Thomas Hawk via Bookmarklet
Some of the neighborhoods are really cool too, like Society Hill, university city and others. - Rob Diana
got to get to Philadelphia one day and shoot there. - Thomas Hawk
Couldn't agree more with you Thomas. Your head will explode with the possibilities. The food isn't bad either, fwiw. - Dave Roth
Meh, I think they're selling NYC short. Every city has the tourist traps and the places where thousands of people take identical photos. There's hundreds of places and neighborhoods within NYC that are underappreciated and rarely photographed well. Similarly I could make a comment about Philly and the liberty bell or the Rocky steps. The key to *any* city is to not waste too much time with the tourist traps, but rather explore and find what really makes that city unique. - Eric
just read the article ,love the idea of the picture swap - fotographic
Cramer's obviously never shot anything in NYC. I have thousands of photographs, mostly of people I've seen in the subways and on the street, and none of them are replications of other photos. Have I done my requisite tourist shots? Sure. Who hasn't? But let's be honest, Philly isn't unique in having unique places to shoot. - Vincent Ferrari
Vinny, I agree. To me NYC is endless in terms of possibilities. I think it is my favorite city in the world to shoot and in a strange way I've always considered it home even though I've never lived there. I do plan on living in NYC at some point in life and really digging into it in new ways. That said, I still think shooting Philly would be pretty amazing. - Thomas Hawk
Philly is probably awesome; I'd never take that away from it. Just annoys me when people assume New York City is all tourist traps, Times Square, and the Village. There's a lot going on here. I hope no one reads this jerk's drivel and actually believes it. - Vincent Ferrari
supposedly north philly is real nice this time of year - Cee Bee
I live about 45 minutes outside Philadelphia, and I'd add that you don't have to get very far outside the city to see some really fascinating, diverse, semi-rural landscapes. There continues to be a lot of agriculture relatively close to town, and there's a lot of history here. Checking out Chester County or Montgomery County in Flickr's maps view will give you an idea. - Nathan Rein
Chester County, FTW! A Philly photowalk with Thomas would be tremendous. I'd probably have to come up from North Carolina for that one. - Dave Roth
I live in the Philly burbs. Lived in London,Paris and outside LA. It seems to me it's the creative eye of the person behind the lens that makes for great photographs, and not necessarily the subject matter. Most every large city has it's share of photogenic scenery. - Henry Burger
I am late because I want to see if Louis likes them first. :-) - Robert Scoble
That was a long article. I'm only used to 140 characters! - Lee Bautista
I like Scoble's comment but can't. :-) - Louis Gray
Chasing the 'latest and greatest (or hottest)' takes a lot of time. I'm walking the fine line between wanting to be an early adopter, and also wanting to have a life outside of my tech world. This article is spot on. I have the Macbook Pro, use Smugmug and am using Friendfeed thanks to all the early adopter recommendations. Thanks guys and gals. - Henry Burger
I'm a "bridging the gap" kind of user. I'm absolutely not a bleeding edge person, but I find I adopt tools after hearing about it from you crazy FF people, like it, and find it takes off a few weeks/months later (just like FF). - Chris Stevenson
I would pay for smugmug, 37signals, bitbucket and many other great services. - Augusto Becciu via twhirl
I didn't actually write it down, but I also wonder if there is a group of mainstream users that will pay a reasonable amount for a service regardless of free alternatives. The reason for this could be that they (unlike early adopters) don't want to spent time to find and try free alternatives - Alexander van Elsas
I pay for Yahoo!Mail ($20/yr for clean POP access), Picasa ($20/yr for 10 GB storage), 1and1.com ($5/month for business website). Still using Blogger for free blogs, but may switch in the future for better designs. - Mitchell Tsai
I pay for last.fm and flickr. The company I work for uses basecamp extensively. - Gez
I pay for Google Sites, Picasa (extra storage), Genealogy.com (although a bit pricey, it provides great resources for research), and LinkedIn (b/c as an independent consultant it is the absolute best networking tool, and I want it to succeed). Although the sites who offer a free trial but require a credit card upfront, and then make it impossible to cancel without a phone call...yeah, I can do without those. - Chris Martin
I pay for flickr. I used to upload a lot of photos there (not as much anymore). $24/year for unlimited storage seems very reasonable to me. And the fact that they have such a nice API so my photos are not locked away if I want to use them made the idea of supporting them financially much more appealing. - Lindsay Donaghe
I pay for Smugmug,Yahoo mail for Pop and Remember the Milk. - Henry Burger via twhirl
I've got to think Flickr has the highest number of paid subscribers of any pure-web service. They provide a good service that's useful for free, but if you want to be a serious user you have to move up to pro. There's a good lesson there for all of us in monetizing a web service... Oh, and it's not open source ;) - Jason Carreira
Totally agree with this post. Another reason to pay : a dollar is a vote for a company you belive in. If you insist on free, you aren't really supporting anything but the failed ad only business model of web 1.0. - Jason Kaneshiro
Jason, but it is weird that a LOT of current web 2.0 companies use that 1.0 business model? - Alexander van Elsas
@Alexander, isn't it weird that a LOT of current web 2.0 companies aren't making any money? ;) - Jason Carreira
@Jason I know, but I fail to understand why so many new startups enter that same death grip. Is it pressure from investors, advertisers, fame? - Alexander van Elsas
Too many Web 2.0 startups are built on a cool technical idea with no business plan behind it. - Jason Carreira
"Apple computers are beautiful, Apple computers are the pinnacle of usability, I grant all of that. But here's something that for the life of me I cannot figure out. Why don't the menu symbols for modifier keys (control, alt, shift) appear on the keyboards?" -Ned Batchelder. - DeWitt Clinton via Bookmarklet
I LOVE Ned's blog, one of my very much appreciated 42 feeds subscriptions :) - directeur via NoiseRiver
On European keyboards, the symbols for option and command are indeed on the keyboard. - Paul Mison
"By linking Barack Obama with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, Republicans tap racist fears of black men and white women" - Dave Winer via Bookmarklet
I've been reading Melissa for years (since we both were noob bloggers) and this is her typical sharp observation, and she is right on the money. - Bora Zivkovic
All about buying local foods. I'm sure these exist in all major areas. Another way to save resources, as it saves delivery costs, and helps keep money in the local economy. - Henry Burger
thats sucks .. big Time.. not one of the best of presents for a bday. But lesson learnt are always good. So it can't be to bad after all !! - Peter Dawson
That super sucks Chris. Sorry for your ass pain there. Any way to check to see if maybe the dumb ass thief has authorized their computer (which might have a DUMB thief's real name attached)? - Gerald Buckley
Yeah, most iCrooks are not that bright in the display screen. - Outsanity
I had $300 deducted by Paypal. They have a fraud section, and they determined I didn't make the charge, and credited me the $300. Here's hoping you have a good outcome as well. It's just the hassle of having to deal with this. - Henry Burger
Addendum. Don't let the bastards get you down. - Henry Burger
Your saying that just made me remove all of my info from PayPal. I don't use it anymore anyway. Sorry about what happened to you. I would be highly pissed. - The Hive Mind
Damn. Well Chris, I am sure someone at either Apple or PayPal must know you?! Get in contact with them directly, scare em' shitless. - Michael Forian
Chris - I'd do the media thing right away before this gets outa hand (Not just the web thing either). BTW - Happy Birthday ? :) - Charlie Anzman
That just plain sucks. I'm with Michael, you've got some heavy web cred, now's the time to make use of it. - Jack Carlson
Ouch! I lost $200 on my first eBay/PayPal purchase, and the seller stalled me past 30 days, so eBay wouldn't help me. It was years before my next eBay purchase. - Mitchell Tsai
From one B-Day Boy to another- Happy Birthday. Now for my birthday wish- any chance on dialing down the f-bombs? (and... really hope you get the money back!) @leolaporte got ripped off on eBay/PayPall bad! - Nice Fish Films
Yikes... hope you can get it back... - Andy DeSoto
Maybe it's me but, I find it weird that people are Liking that Chris got debunked out of $450 - Outsanity
@Outsanity (outsanity): I didn't think I'd really have to explain that I'm not actually enjoying Chris' circumstances, especially considering I'd been bilked through PayPal once, myself (for 50 bucks). - MiniMage via NoiseRiver
Oh, I know that. I'm just saying it's weird. I don't think anyone would actually like bad news in enjoyment. - Outsanity
Just a note to folks, don't depend on Paypal for help. If you have any significant funds in your paypal account MOVE THEM TO A BANK ACCOUNT NOW. Too many vendors have paypal grab, confiscate or hold funds and we have no recourse. Paypal is a dangerous place for money. - Soulhuntre
oh yuck man. waht is the deal?! the last time that happened to me (fraudulent laptop sale on ebay) -- they stepped in and i got my $1200 back. - jon madison via twhirl
That's awful. I, too, hope that you get that money back! (And happy birthday, hopefully on a happier note...) - Tamar Weinberg
Cancel the billing agreement under your PayPal Profile page. Profile > Paylist > Select iTunes listing and then Cancel. Virtual goods is virtual goods, and PayPal has never covered it. However, fraudulent use of your PayPal account (spoof) is covered by law, and thus covered by PayPal. The difference is which acct was compromised. If it was the iTunes acct, then Apple owes you, not PayPal. - WazNeeni
Epic rage inducement! Happy Birthday otherwise man :( - Mo Kargas
I am not really a teche, but if Scoble would get rid of his shinny thing and show his human side more, he would really be good for the tech industry! - Igor The Troll
Alexander van Elsas - but this is really such a hard pick to make - Steven Hodson
Robert Scoble. He's the one who brought me to FriendFeed. - Mitchell Tsai
With no disrespect to any of the above. None of the above listed so far are pure tech bloggers other then Jon udell and Nikki . All those mention talk about technology but are not into hard core programming and therefore are not techies per sec !! - Peter Dawson
Peter, I can't stand blogs that talk about programming, and I'm an engineer - Bjorn Tipling
The term is pretty broad these days. - Chris Baskind
"Liveblogging scope definitions: OH NO HE DI'NT" "Top 10 reasons you need to use FORTRAN" "Is LVM killing GCC?" - Mark Trapp
Dave Winer. He is always challenging and not afraid to speak his mind. He is thought provoking, and has contributed to all our tech experiences. I just wish he would dial back a little on the politics. At least we know where he stands. - Henry Burger
@Bjorn, I understand what you are saying. But the question on hand is one tech blogger. So who are these tech bloggers listed above -I mean as an engineer how many of these bloggers really talk hardcore technology ? Secondly, what do they really know about how it works and the bit/byte , constructor level of ..lets say a c++ complier. What they talk about is the UI, the ways it could be used etc. They are product reviwers not tech bloggers. I'll add Dave W to tech Blogger status !! :)- - Peter Dawson
@Chris, thats the problem with terms being loosely or broadly used !! If I were to ask any1 of them to explain precisely what this snip means <ssh $USR@$host w > $OUT> and what is supposed to happen, they will certainly flunk the test. there is big difference between tech bloggers and product reviewers !! - Peter Dawson
Andy Ihnatko - http://www.cwob.com: Absolutely the funniest tech columnist who doesn't write a "comedy column". His appearances on Mac Break Weekly are always the best and his aforementioned blog is wonderful. - Canyon R
Louis Gray and any "guest star" he has... - Vince DeGeorge
ugh, just one? Alexander Van Elsas or Corvida. Not sure which though. - Rob Diana
haha, I just realized that I was logged into mrsth's account when I said scobleizer before. I guess that makes two of us! - Thomas Hawk
Jacqui Cheng, Julian Sanchez, Jon Stokes, and generally anyone else we employ at Ars Technica ;) - Clint Ecker
Tim O'Reilly - lots of others are right up there with him though - Jesse Stay
Wow, I am honored. I don't have one favorite. I used to like Winer the most but he has been writing about politics lately so don't see him as a tech blogger. Love Hawk too. Or is that "two?" heh. I have a bunch of favorites, though, I am with Tamar: it is too difficult to pick one name. Or even five. According to FriendFeed my favorite is TechCrunch and Louis Gray. - Robert Scoble
that's hard. If you make me me pick I'll go with Umair Haque. - Kevin
Scoble gets a lot of points for participation and conversation and sheer superhuman energy, but I can't say he's actually my favorite *blogger*. I need to think about this a little bit. - Michael Hocter
