UHM mona - the original transformers came out in the 80s :) i remember cuz i waited in line for hours to get in :)
- Allen Stern
+1 Allen. I was going to say almost the same thing.
- Curtiss Grymala
yea the actual original rocked - the remake or whatever really was pretty crappy - they made the transformers too big - i mean optimus takes one step, he should create a dent 2 miles deep :) - the original rocked - rodimus gets the power, etc...
- Allen Stern
+1 Allen - I remember being really excited about that, too
- Jesse Stay
I wonder at what point they're going to just start releasing these blockbusters straight to DVD. Eventually it's got to be the cheaper solution.
- Jesse Stay
jesse i wore a transformers tshirt to that movie :)
- Allen Stern
One of my neighbors (apparently, it's one of my neighbors) has targeted me/my house for vandalism. First, they smashed the driverside window of my husband's car and made off with the care stereo faceplate. That was two days ago. TODAY, I woke up and discovered the side gate was open, and one of the planks on it had been pulled loose.
The outside thermometer had been smashed and some of the siding had been taken off. I don't know what the fuck is going on. I'm guessing, since I haven't been doing a lot of upkeep on the front yard, it's now looking like the place has been abandoned. But outside of that, there's always been an indication that someone's lived there. I have no proof of who's doing this, because it's happening late at night. Do I just keep my front light on and piss off my OTHER neighbors, or what?
- Helen Sventitsky
Thank you, Herb. I guess I should only feel so lucky right now that it's just some minor annoyances. The car had been sitting out there for months, so I figured it was inevitable that it would be picked on, at some point. Since it's undriveable anyway, we've decided to donate it to charity, broken window and all.
- Helen Sventitsky
If it's neighbors, what the hell is wrong with them? Can you get some kind of webcam set up to see what's going on?
- Anika
Could you install a screw-in motion sensor on your outdoor light?
- Greg GuitarBuster
I would call the cops and ask them to keep an eye out. If you can afford it, get a cam like Anika's suggesting. An infrared cam is even more useful if it's happening at night. God, that sucks.
- Spidra Webster
Thanks all. I think we already have a sensor light, so I might have to start keeping that on. Unfortunately, the activity has been happening at the other side of the house where the sensor light is. I wish I could afford a sensor light, but I'll see what I can do.
- Helen Sventitsky
Can you talk to the other neighbor and explain what's going on and tell him/her that you want to leave the front light on, at least for the next little while? Maybe if the neighbor understands what is happening s/he won't be pissed off, and may even keep an eye out to see who the vandal is.
- vicster
I think I'll do that, vicster, Thanks! I'm not close to my neighbors, but my interactions with them have always been cordial. They've had to deal with taggers in the past, themselves, and I've offered to watch out for them while that was happening. Hopefully, they'll do the same for me.
- Helen Sventitsky
This area's gotten a lot worse over the last few months in terms of joblessness, and the homeless population has grown. That, and there are a lot of bored kids around here. I'm going to try to fix the fence during my lunch hour and start keeping the sensor light on at night. If this happens again, THEN I will call the cops.
- Helen Sventitsky
I understand your concern. From my experiences the last couple of days, I'm wondering how to get the attention of our homeowners association and neighborhood crime watch.
- Greg GuitarBuster
Hell, I'd call them now just to get the stuff on the record. The cops allot resources based on the calls they're getting. Maybe they don't know about the increase of incidents in your area and you'd be helping by bringing their attention to it.
- Spidra Webster
I have it on right now. (in blue) Love it , but I have been wearing some sort of ironman for years. They seem to last a long time. and I usually wear them 24 hours a day
- Tracy Benham
@Tracy I couldn't really tell. Does it automatically track how many minutes per mile you run? Is that what the Chrono is? I wanted to wait for the Chrono tap but it seems it's only available February 2010
- Shevonne
Chrono is just a fancy name for a stopwatch. It won't compute your minutes per mile.
- Kevin Pedraja
@Kevin You should have let me continue thinking it was fancy. =P
- Shevonne
Just googled "cum" as in lawyer-cum-politician to see if I could find out which noun was supposed to come first, the thing something turned into or the thing it was before. Shoulda known that would turn out badly... Anyone know the answer to my actual question? (Does lawyer-cum-politician mean a lawyer who became a politician or vice versa?)
It does NOW, shawn, that's the reason googling didn't work. It's originally Latin and means something that was one thing and turned into something else.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Actually, I'm thinking I won't use that construction after all anyway. Seems highly likely to draw the wrong sort of Googlers. (Or at least, Googlers who would be less than interested in a review of a Czech stop-motion film.)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
And I believe, though am not sure, that the former is former and the latter is latter.
- Michael W. May
I thought it just meant 'with.' Reminds me of when my dad wanted a sports store and googled 'dicks.' True story! LOL
- Herb Hernandez
from iPhone
preposition [usu. in combination ] combined with; also used as (used to describe things with a dual nature or function) : a study-cum-bedroom.
- Ed Millard
"with" is "con," I think, Herb. We used to have a Dick's in the mall by us. Always struck me as a poor choice of name for a sports store! And that's what I thought, MWM and ωαřмaiden. I just wasn't sure if it would be translated "lawyer turned politician" or "lawyer used-to-be politician." I guess the former does make more sense. EDIT: Oh, with Ed's comment, I guess it can mean "with" in that sense. That's a good definition, Ed. Thanks.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I thought it was derived from a joint venture between Princess Leia in Return of the Jedi Jabba Outfit and Alyssa Milano of season 3 of Who's The Boss.
- Matthew DeVries
LOL okay already it's a latin preposition meaning "with" or "both"
- sofarsoShawn
I think the word cum with just the Latin word for with, plain and simple - no transformations required - as sofarsoshawn has beaten me to saying
- MaryB, BrandingBroadOfFF
This is interesting; I didn't realize it had so much of a sense that the thing is both things at once. I thought it meant more of a changing from one thing into another. See how much you learn when you post blatant comment-bait posts? :)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
so I've always read those lawyer-cum-politician phrases as the two things simultaneously. Yay for seventh-grade Latin!
- MaryB, BrandingBroadOfFF
Doh! I show up once everything has been figured out? My 2 years of latin in college has yet to be used once. *grumbes* "one of these days"
- SAM
The definition I posted is out of the OSX dictionary. This thread is interesting commentary on the Internet age, no one seems to use a dictionary any more. Its like I Googled it... and Wikipedia says... If only someone had done a real-time search on Twitter too.
- Ed Millard
Latin "cum" means "with" or "against" (usually "with"). As an English phrase, it usually means "combined with" or "and also".
- Glen Campbell, B.A.
Heh, it's like the wave-particle duality.
- Victor Ganata
To answer your question (as many people have forgot), it means the person is both a lawyer and a politician; simultaneously, with no transition implied. As in, "Glen is an asshole-cum-jerk," meaning that I'm BOTH an asshole and a jerk.
- Glen Campbell, B.A.
Ed, I would've sought out a Latin dictionary before long, too - I have a physical one, even! I just thought the googling "cum" thing was funny, so wanted to post it, and then figured while I was posting anyway, I might as well ask.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I just think its an interesting insight on our times, where we go to get every answer, I do it too. I'm wondering if the dictionary business is in the same bad shape as newspapers and printed encyclopedias.
- Ed Millard
When people start pronouncing the 'h' in herb, we'll talk :P
- Johnny Worthington
"When people start pronouncing the 'h' in herb, we'll talk " <-- That's not a very exciting story, in the incredibly unlikely event anyone's interested.
- Christopher A Carr
Eivind Americans don't call them that :-p it's Munich and Cologne...
- Rasmus Lauridsen
from iPhone
Smart Americans know Florence is spelled Firenze.
- Cristo
I had to help a poor guy (he was Canadian, though) this summer in Budapest. He was going by train to Florence via Venice (Venezia) and none of those cities were in his timetable :)
- Eivind
I shant comment on another RS post...I loves my FF peeps...We rock
- Bill Heslin
MVB: seems that everyone here wants this, so this is what I'm going to post. I don't want to rain on anyone's parade.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, I have no problem with you not liking FriendFeed as a service or not getting anything out of it anymore. You had valid points about forums. What bothered me was the language and the tone of your initial post and screenshot that singled out and attacked the people of FriendFeed. You don't have to like the service or find it interesting but there are more respectful ways to communicate that...ways that don't personally offend the rest of the users and cause them to get defensive and angry.
- joey
joey: you're right. I was wrong. But I'm not getting fed here anymore and I didn't communicate that well.
- Robert Scoble
Sorry Robert, ever read the story "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" ? Check it out.
- Maxamad
I guess it's like falling in love with a four-star Thai restaurant that slowly switches to some other kind of food.
- Robert Scoble
The worst part is that my "best of day" is dominated by people posting all the different reasons your post was wrong.
- Bruce Lewis
Mehmet: I've read it many times. So you're right. Fine. FriendFeed is awesome. Now what?
- Robert Scoble
Bruce: we're even thanks to that man-boob liking photo.
- Robert Scoble
Anyway, what kind of tech stuff are you looking for?
- Bruce Lewis
Josh: nah, yesterday's posts were bait. This is just me saying hi.
- Robert Scoble
Bruce: I've already found it, you don't need to find it for me.
- Robert Scoble
I still like you, Robert. We've had good conversations. Just... Perhaps you could have handled it a little differently, is all. Best of luck in whatever is next and I'll see you around the net.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
from iPod
Bill: you are welcome to block me. Then you'll be alone without me.
- Robert Scoble
I was just answering Josh. I'm not baiting anybody myself.
- Bruce Lewis
The food's the same here, you just made a serious mistake by stiffing the wait staff. Face it Robert, you're a fast food kind of guy.
- jcunwired
jcunwired: I enjoy fast food as much as anyone but I do try to temper it with veggies.
- Robert Scoble
Not that there's anything wrong with that. If you need tech "news" you don't want to hang out on a site that's exactly the same kind of awesome it was two months ago.
- Bruce Lewis
Oh good lord, a blanket apology/explanation is plenty sufficient. He doesn't need to come to each of our houses and prostrate himself before us and beg our humblest forgiveness. We need to learn more from that Baboon that Benson played in the Lion King.
- Matthew DeVries
Bruce: I'm not going to fall for your bait. FriendFeed is awesome!
- Robert Scoble
Why is Scoble trying to kill Friendfeed?
- Cliff Gerrish
Cliff: why would I try to kill something so awesome?
- Robert Scoble
My "more wrong" blog post was (in tone) bait. My comments here are real.
- Bruce Lewis
I swear Robert you like to toy with people because they are so predictable : )
- Owen Greaves
Because he has the delusion that he can.
- jcunwired
Is this what it is going to come to? People ripping each other apart until there is no one left alive when the lights are turned off?
- Mathew™ one of a kind
jcunwired: I couldn't "make" FriendFeed despite pissing off thousands of people over on Twitter by constantly talking it up. I guess everyone forgets that. Same over on my blog. And I've shown FF to thousands of people during speaking engagements. But, no, all that work didn't help make FriendFeed hyper popular so, no, I don't live under any delusion that I can, then, get anyone to leave. FriendFeed is awesome and nothing I say can change that.
- Robert Scoble
At the Boston FriendFeed meetup I was the only one who found Robert Scoble through FriendFeed. Everybody else found FriendFeed through Robert Scoble.
- Bruce Lewis
I found you through FriendFeed and I'm grateful for that!
- Robert Scoble
you could say that that it's a sad sack of going nowhere, now that the team was acquired and told Steve Gillmor like 8 times in the last Gang that a bunch of the best features here were too much for the 300 million nuffnuffs that use Facebook.
- Marshall Kirkpatrick
if you wanted to say something about FF not being awesome, that is.
- Marshall Kirkpatrick
Marshall: oh, you were listening to the latest Gang. There was a LOT of news in that Gang and Steve and I were wondering if anyone would notice.
- Robert Scoble
it was hard to notice with the thick fog of PR bs. mostly seemed like bad news and non-news. would love to know what I missed :)
- Marshall Kirkpatrick
i don't mean to be un-understanding, FB is a huge org with hundreds of millionso f users, billions of $ at stake. i'm sure i'd speak cautiously too
- Marshall Kirkpatrick
Marshall: yeah, if I were FriendFeed execs I would speak carefully as well. The transcript comes tomorrow, we'll dig through it and highlight anything really useful in the Gillmor Gang. There were a few things that clarified where they are going a bit.
- Robert Scoble
Transcript? FriendFeed execs? Did an interview happen with Bret, Jim, Paul, Sanjeev?
- Bruce Lewis
AJ: I don't have to do those tricks anymore. Look at all the comments!
- Robert Scoble
Never satisfied. Tell me how much you love FF every waking hour.
- Jason Hill
And, anyway, I understand everyone here knows at least 60 reasons why FriendFeed is awesome, no need to iterate through that list again.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert: I miss it though! You're welcome any time. In other news, the world of the Internet is a fascinating place. I wouldn't be anywhere else.
- AJ Kohn
Always here. Like every time I long-on. Robert is infinitely connected. Is it happiness? ... a disease? ... or both?? :)
- Charlie Anzman
So confused... but don't care anymore. Can't we just go back to how it was before? Everyone posts/likes/doesn't do whatever they want.
- Jan Ole Peek
Louis, Robert probably already has a real picture like that somewhere.
- Jesse Stay
Josh, I want the transcript to your video
- Jesse Stay
I enjoy friendfeed sooo much!! I hope it doesn't go anywhere but gets optimized! Great site to make great connections and meet a bunch of awesome people!
- John Tastad
Let me get this straight. People are deleting their accounts because of others posting pictures? The whining and bitchiness of this site lately has really turned me off as a whole. Fucking get over yourself and stop taking everything so personally.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Complicated my ass. The mood of this site for the past 3 months has been incredibly negative, and I'm tired of it. If it's not one thing, it's another.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
This is why I'm glad I only check "Best of Day" and a few feeds. I can't handle this shit anymore. What once was a really helpful, loving, friendly community has become a constant bitchfest of aggressive behavior and sarcasm. And no, I'm not deleting my account. I just plan to be on this site a lot less if this pattern continues much longer.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Well apparently Aden deleted her account, and now Mary Carmen is apologizing for posting pictures. STOP. Just STOP. The minute we have to apologize for something as simple as posting a picture of yourself is the day that people are taking this WAY TOO SERIOUSLY.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Let's all bash Aden? Is that what we're doing now because she deleted her account? I don't like how she deleted her account, but do we really know the true reason? Some think she just deleted her account due to pictures being posted, but maybe there is something more going on. I wish she would rethink her decision though because to some people it doesn't make her look good.
- Mol, Time Warping
@AJ: Thanksgiving is for indigestion, fist fights in the snow and domestic disturbance calls ending in a hail of gunfire.
- Joe Silence is not dead
I'm certainly not bashing Aden, I consider her a friend. I just don't understand the reason for the whole thread in the first place. It's all so ridiculous.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
The thread wasn't even that bad (the responses) unless she was getting private messages.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
i'm startled and a little hurt by her sudden dash through the door, but i'll deal. certainly not gonna bash her for dropping out for some cooling off time. fuck knows i certainly get butthurt enough myself.
- Joe Silence is not dead
Yeah but you don't have to delete your account to drop out for a bit. I've taken a couple of days off, I doubt anyone even notices.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
Hey, I know, can we talk politics or religion? That'll set us straight! ;)
- AJ Kohn
Haggis, I didn't mean you were bashing her and I know you two are friends. I just think there is something else going on that made her do that. I've done and said things in the past when I had personal issues going on that I regretted doing. I hope she does come back, because I was starting to really like her. I miss her snails. :(
- Mol, Time Warping
Wow, I totally missed all this. Usually I grab popcorn for drama, but I like both Aden and Mary Carmen. :(
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
@Andrea: I don't think it was necessarily the original thread, but there were a couple response threads. She was already pretty upset. I wish she hadn't deleted her account, since that seems to only have made things worse.
- Jennifer Dittrich
from iPhone
I guess I didn't see some of the follow up threads or I just didn't know what they were about, but a flounce is rarely the answer.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
I agree. I think it was a big overreaction to delete the account, when hiding or logging off works pretty well.
- Jennifer Dittrich
from iPhone
I think there was something else going on before she posted the thread whose comments I took issue with, as she had deleted several posts earlier today. That being said, I feel like a complete shit and I wish I could at least apologize.
- Mary Carmen
Mary, quit apologizing. Aden probably had some personal issues going on off FF that came on here. Don't blame yourself. *hugs*
- Mol, Time Warping
Snap, I totally missed out on this drama today.
- Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
I missed this, but Mary Carmen, don't apologize, that's why there is "Hide," and Aden, if you are reading this, please come back, because we miss you.
- Amy℠
Oh good grief. I couldn't even see what happened. Still can't until I get on the pc
- Kamilah Gill
from email
I have no idea what happened with the few people referred to but, in general, I've noticed the negativity. Haggis, I'm glad one of the cool kids said it :) Anyway, keep the ass talk coming!
- metalerik
:(((( I hate to hear about all of this. I actually noticed a missing comment from Aden in my feed before I checked Best of Day. I was really hoping she just deleted it. :(
- Carmen
Sean, you know I *heart* you madly but it's hardly helping the mood of the site when you dismiss Aden's post so quickly. No, she didn't delete her account because of photos. This wasn't the first time she expressed feelings of inadequacy about her looks so this goes deeper than just "some FF photos." It's easy enough for us to say that one should get over it but we don't have her concerns. I'm sorry she felt she needed to delete her account but reactions like this don't help ward off the negativity either.
- pea ♥ fierce as a woozle
Oh dear. I have no idea what's going on save for a couple recap threads but I do hope that Aden comes back as I had just recently interacted with her and she was very helpful! I hope she does decide to come back
- Tamara
even now she is developing a new FB app called "Mom's revenge"
- WorldofHiglet
I see nothing wrong with that. I don't mind a slow game but I do mind when people forget about a game entirely. I don't have a problem forcing forfeits then.
- pea ♥ fierce as a woozle
Thomas, I would have had more compassion if it were her first offense. This is a pattern, and maybe she'll remember it better next time. :)
- Louis Gray
oh LG you have a cruel streak afterall, surely not, you love her beating you really
- Thomas Power
Louis is a gentle man he couldn't deliver tough love if he tried - I suspect his Mom is kicking his ass and he's had to pull out in embarassment
- Thomas Power
My experience of Facebook Scrabble was that the application didn;t work half the time. Your poor Mum probably gave up in frustration!
- Stella Holman
The new Tweetie has some great features but I /really/ miss the threaded tweets in TwitBird Pro. See and download the full gallery on posterous ...
