I can't draw that straight on a whiteboard, but I can paint a perfect line with a brush and some oil. Why? - Clay Newton
Wow, now I look cool as a FriendFeed user. EDIT: I'd also like to say that you made a really good choice of music. - possible248 via NoiseRiver
Looks to me like they're erasing a pre-drawn whiteboard, and play it for us backwards. The signatures at the end are a clue, as is the way they approach the whiteboard at the start. I think it's still pretty clever, because it means they would be able to get it right in one take. - Robert Konigsberg
"MINI itself will be bringing scads of these buggers to American streets in the summer of 2009. Yeah, like, one year from right now." - Tudor Bosman via Bookmarklet
"According to a life cycle analysis by Franklin Associates, Ltd, plastic bags create fewer airborne emissions and require less energy during the life cycle of both types of bags per 10,000 equivalent uses -- plastic creates 9.1 cubic pounds of solid waste vs. 45.8 cubic pounds for paper; plastic creates 17.9 pounds of atmospheric emissions vs. 64.2 pounds for paper; plastic creates 1.8 pounds of waterborne waste vs. 31.2 pounds for paper." So... Plastic wins by a long shot, but if you're really trying to save the planet you have to go canvas... - Ross Miller via Bookmarklet
Using reusable bags like cloth or recycled material is the way to go. If you shop in Europe, you can end up paying for each bag as a deterrent for creating waste. Like many things in the US, companies have not tried it because the pushback is considered bad for business. I hope that one of them will take the chance and do it. At least some of the chains are selling reusable bags to people who think of recycling at this point, not only Whole Foods but a few mainstream chains as well. - Aron Michalski
Yeah, I've noticed a big push toward store branded reusable bags, but it would definitely help motivate people if stores charged for plastic/paper bags... - Ross Miller
I thought the problem with plastic was that they would blow away and become litter, eventually strangling wildlife in the ocean or whatever. - ⓞnor
in most hotels in Hong Kong, they provide a cloth shopping bag; and the shopkeepers are quite happy when you use it. Noting also, that China has banned the plastic bag; though that's probably more of litter issue which was politically shifted into a 'green' solution as well - clarke thomas
Some stores like Whole Foods give you $0.10 for each bag that you bring in. It isn't much, but shows somewhat of a commitment. It would be interesting to see if you raised that to $0.50 or a $1.00 what effect it would have considering the higher grocery bills... - Derek Coatney
I just bought a ton of poop-bags for my dog. They're 100% degradable and you'll find them in any dog store. The best part is the cute fire hydrant that attaches to the leash that holds the bags. No more scrounging around for bags or taking the SF examiner wrapping :) - Ivan Kirigin
I've a friend who manufactures plastic bags and he told me to watch out when using them. A bag contains harmful chemicals both in the manufacturing process and in the product itself. Best to wash your hands or any items in it after usage least you consume any of the color dye or calcium carbonate specks. - Jason
I use reusable cloth bags. Wegman's sells them for $1, they help the environment and are dead useful. - Benjamin Golub
I'm becoming a fan of the cloth bags. Not only are they reusable, they're stronger than both paper and plastic. I just need to remember to bring them. - Robert Konigsberg
I only use shopping bags made out of hemp, they're three times stronger than normal cloth bags, and you can smoke them once you get home with your munchies. - Jim Norris
What bothers me is how much these national telecom oligarchies are effectively monopolies because of collusion like this. Both companies institute the same policy at the same time so consumers don't have billing choice? - Bret Taylor
Just moved to Canada from Bangkok, Thailand. where telecoms and consumer banking go, I feel like I moved to the middle ages instead... - Kamath
IIRC, the markup on text messaging costs are 6000%. Now they claim that you need to pay for incoming because the infrastructure costs are too high? - Nick Munson
@Bret, Others on plans from Rogers (&Fido) for example avoid this for now. But there's no way that Rogers won't do the same eventually. Ridiculous. - Nick Munson
This might be the first time I'm happy to be a Rogers user. Though that doesn't make me less angry at them for their iPhone plans. - jenn schachter
@jenn agreed. it's a bad time to own a cell phone in Canada no matter who your provider is. - Nick Munson
Wait, I thought Canada was supposed to be awesome. Was I lied to? - ⓞnor
Well an added bonus to the situation is if you get spam text messages, you will still be charged! Makes one wonder if they will hire a company to spam cellular phones. - Herman
Big deal, I take my mac charger with me _everywhere_! :) - Robert Konigsberg
Mine must always be in my lap or on my shoulders if I work from home. It's cute but annoying. Sometimes I can convince them to sit in a chair next to me. - xero
CUTE kitty!!!!!!! I love cats... cool buddy!! - Susan Beebe
They are a constant reminder of what is important in Life. - Thomas T. Panto
My one-year-old kitty is totally my co-worker at home. Every once in a while she has a meeting elsewhere, but for the most part she is somehow near me or on me a good chunk of the day. She also sleeps on my back at night and purrs in my ear - soothing, adorable and occasionally annoying. - Rachel L Fisher
My work buddy is my shih tzu who loves to lay perilously close to the switch on my power strip. She also has to follow me around and be no further than 10 feet away from me at all times... She's a great foot warmer when the weather is cold. - Tad Donaghe via fftogo
How did I miss this one? Pets make working at home awesome. - Benjamin Golub
nice coloring - one of ours like to sleep on my sons 17" macbook pro's keyboard :-p - mike "glemak" dunn
but how does it do when sandwiched between two suvs? - bob via Bookmarklet
hopefully it comes with a locator beacon for when your friends pick it up and hide it behind the Ford pickup - Earl E Morningwood
"As for the engine, the concept had a one-cylinder diesel engine producing 8.5 horsepower and 13.5 foot-pounds of torque. Car says the production model will use a two-cylinder turbodiesel for a little more oomph. Doubling the number of cylinders is sure to cut fuel economy, so VW may install a diesel-hybrid drivetrain. The engine turns off at stop lights to save fuel, then automatically restarts when the driver depresses the accelerator pedal.
(Update: The car reportedly has anti-lock brakes, stability control and airbags. According to Canadian Driver, "Volkswagen says the One-Liter Car is as safe as a GT sports car registered for racing. With the aid of computer crash simulations, the car was designed with built-in crash tubes, pressure sensors for airbag control and front crumple zones.")
What's it gonna cost? Car quotes "one well-placed insider" who says the One-Liter could have a sticker price of anywhere from 20,000 to 30,000 Euros (about $31,750 to $47,622)." - Paul Buchheit
hopefully there won't be as many suvs and pickups to avoid once gas hits $5 a gallon. beautiful car. this is what the future was *supposed* to be. doc brown must have gone back in time and fixed things. - Karim
absolutely.. I think rising gas prices are the biggest boon in disguise... guess all automobile companies will start unveiling all their work they've been doing on fuel effeciency. - Krishna Gade
way to go guys, onwards and upwards! good luck! you haven't worked at a real startup unless there is a foozball table or a pool table. looks like you are legit :) - Ivan Stegic
a malmo chair from ikea! the very same colour as mine! - Giovanni De Stefano
I like that office, I wish mine was that nice!! - Paul
It seems you bought more tables and chairs to hire more hackers. I like how open your office is. - seman
We actually didn't buy any tables or chairs - they were left here by the last company. We have a table/chair graveyard in the back as a consequence :) - Bret Taylor
It looks exactly the same as the old office... - Jini
The red chair is still my favorite, but it looks like I have more seats to try out. - Amit Patel
On first thought - great Place! I like the open air about it... but on second thought I don't think I can work in such an open space. I just need my personal space. - Parth Awasthi
sweet, but I'd put those pool cues in a cue holder or they will bend stored leaning against a wall...causing bad shots. also sunlight on pool table will cause fading, but you probably will just get a new table eventually w/ all the success! :) - Pokai
sacrilege to say I think it looks pretty ugly? - Adam
Yeah, I just had the same surprise. Looking forward to pictures of the new place! - Jordan Hofker
Congrats!, remember to recycle those boxes. - Mike Fruchter
Yay new office! Hopefully you aren't moving like the last two startups I worked for.. as fast as possible in the middle of the night, etc., etc. - J. Phil
congrats, don't get drunk tonight, or maybe u should - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Well, then... you're not my real friend. Real friends would ask other friends to help move. Not that I'm complaining about not being asked or anything... just sayin', that's all. - l0ckergn0me
@Alex - That was probably the problem. ;) (Usually: Massive = Expensive) - sebmos
Alex: massive, and unfortunately temporary. It was massive because we got an incredible deal b/c they wanted someone to fill the space for 10 months, so they gave us a very good rate on the space. Our new space is more permanent (2 year lease). @sebmos: not expensive at all, thankfully :) - Bret Taylor
The new FriendFeed offices are literally across the parking lot. So if you've ever been to one of their open houses, you can park in the same spot. :-) - Louis Gray
love the graphic at the top!!! keep it up! - Stefan Hayden
congrats on the move! hope I get an opportunity to visit the new office. - David Vasileff
across the parking lot? Is it the eye-fi office? - Patrick Li
I thought the logo was to suggest that by posting items in your feed, you're sending presents to your friends. It was cute! You should bring it back! - Alex Mendes da Costa
You must be all moved in, the Logo's gone. I miss it, kind of liked it. Not that you need to start the Google-like logo of the day, but you might change it around once in awhile. - Victor Ryden
Ross! This live video feed rocks! Only problem with living vicariously through you is that I have much less time to live vicariously through myself. Mini golf and organic yogurt through your eyes is just too entertaining ... - Tom Stocky
This also looks like a "Battleship" tournament... Kevin, in fact, appears to be making the "you sank my battleship!" gesture. - Chris Reed
Great to see a company firing on all cylinders - Mike Doeff
Josh: the key is extremely large screens so you can't actually see the person in front of you. - Bret Taylor
Man, do people get sent to sit by the bathroom and public writeboard as punishment? - Stepan Mazurov
I brought a t-shirt to change into after biking to work, but I didn't bother. I might have made a different choice if I'd known it would be blogged... :-) - Kevin Fox
@Kevin: You match the rug and lamp so it's working. :) - Tsega Dinka
Awesome window into FF Bret. Really like the transparency and willingness to speak openly with the community and those who are critical of FF. Enjoyed that Qik inteview by what's his name... - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Wow you guys have really grown and your office looks more colorful than the "garden variety" Google office space! - Bindu Reddy
Keep up the good work. You'll all have corner offices soon :) - Andrew Smith
i hope one of those people is working on the "page 11" bug! - Nick
I'm with Josh - I'd probably go crazy, no matter how large the screen. - Ontario Emperor
Wait, there's somebody on the other side of my monitor? - Casey Muller
im all up in paul's code now! and that guy in the orange really sits up straight - Allen Stern
I want to go and meet Bret, Paul, Dave, and the gang!! - Susan Beebe
I see nobody will finish off that Old Time Candy. As your mothers likely told you, you can't have more until you finish what you already have! - Louis Gray
Louis: we ate all of our favorites. Apparently no one wants to eat the wax lips. That was the best gift we have ever gotten, by the way. You rock, Louis. - Bret Taylor
Bret, but shouldn't the interns _have_ to wear the wax lips as some form of initiation? - Louis Gray
So that's where all my attention went! :-) - Robert Scoble
"Roughly the size of a Toyota (TM) Prius, the Ox can travel between 125 and 155 miles before needing a recharge, and zips from zero to 60 miles per hour in about 8.5 seconds. Its lithium-ion batteries can be charged to 80% capacity in less than an hour, and slender solar panels integrated into the roof power the onboard electronics. Inside, the hatchback includes a bevy of high-tech gizmos such as GPS navigation, a mobile Internet connection, and a key fob that lets drivers customize the car's all-digital dashboard. Pricing has yet to be announced, but the company's current vehicles cost less than $25,000." - Karen Padham Taylor
Good luck getting a 150-mile lithium battery for anything like that price... the solar panel also seems like a gimmick (as it is on the Aptera). - ⓞnor
Is it my understanding you can only lease the car and not buy it? Thats no fair! - Herman
Yah, and they are only making like two of them for movie stars. Oh, well. - Bret Taylor
@Herman, Ford I think it was (or some US manufacturer) did the same thing with it's first fleet of alternate powered vehicles about ten years ago. Offered them for lease only, after 4 years despite the fact everyone loved them and wanted to keep them they called in all the leases and destroyed the vehicles. Oil unions and other conglomerates 1, environmentally sane thinkers 0. - Steve Craft
