FriendFeed should be faster again. We were had some network issues which caused a lot of slowness this past week, but I think it's fixed now. Let me know if you are still encountering any extreme slowness.
Mainly just had problems with email posting and the bookmarklet. The rest seemed fairly okay.
- Jason Huebel
I've been told that I'm extremely slow much of the time, but I don't think that's what you meant. Thanks for taking care of the issue, Paul.
- Jim: Dead Like FF
Meanwhile, Dad's kids with his new wife get what kind of toys?
- Matthew DeVries
Matthew, FriendFeed users have no reason to complain about our toys. And even if we did, bitterness doesn't help.
- Bruce Lewis
FriendFeed is dying for me. In fact. it's just about gone. I use it as a control room and discussion space for my Twitter feed, and a searchable archive. Discussion threads are down about 80 percent. "Likes" are off about 90 percent. There's no real time feed in from Twitter any more. Sad.
- Jay Rosen
Agreed, Jay. My personal life is in a bit of an upheaval right now, which hasn't helped, but the FB acquisition took the wind out of the sails for me. It feels like there's no future, or worse, a future wired up to the "friending" criteria of my Facebook account. I use the services COMPLETELY differently, however. Inbound updates continue, since they're automatic, but this is the first comment I've posted in weeks. Sad, indeed.
- Ken Kennedy
I am using Twitter and FB more and more lately. On the plus side, it's strengthening some real world connections. I'm missing out on the cool new stuff but I think I had gone overboard on that front.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I like FriendFeed, but I happen to find myself using Twitter and IRC more as of late. I guess I've probably just burnt myself and others out, given that I don't seem to have much in the way of compelling content and commentary these days, and that I just don't feel as motivated as I'd like to. :(
- Tyson Key
Thanks for throwing some love over to FF :)
- Susan Beebe
Is there currently an issue with posting from FF to update Facebook -or is Facebook broken after the re-design ? i dont get anything posted to FB anymore which worked fine before yd
- Del_
Hi Paul, I know it has been a while since this post. But over the last 48 hours my Twitter updates have quit showing up in FF. I tried manually refreshing. Then I removed the account so I could just add it back in. When trying to do that I get the following message: "We could not find the given account" I haven't changed anything. Any thoughts on why this is happening? I haven't had any trouble until now. Thanks.
- Mary-Lynn
My Twitter feed is coming into FF much faster now - thanks! *Edit - Blog feed, too!
- Kurt Starnes
dried fruit (esp raisins), alcohol and a bit of suet as a pie filling. I've never had it but I really like raisin pie so I think I'd probably like mince pies.
- Spidra Webster
I used to think meat and fruit couldn't mix but there used to be a Peruvian restaurant in town and they totally changed my mind on that with a sort of Peruvian tamale they made with raisins in it.
- Spidra Webster
There's no nuts in it?!?! WTF did they feed me? I refuse to believe those crunchy bits were actual meat.
- Admiral Anika
One of my great-aunts made mincemeat pies every Thanksgiving. I never tried it.
- Katy S
"minced meat" is a common term in the UK for what we in the US call "hamburger." Mincemeat (or "mince," as it's often called) is a pie filling dating back to the middle ages that consists of small pieces of fruits, nuts, and suet, usually soaked in wine or other spirits. It used to be considered a great delicacy and has since fallen somewhat out of favor.
- Mistletoe Glen
The preparation was also a good way to preserve meat way back when. It also adds filler (the fruits and such), extending the amount of meat that a person had to use. In that context, it makes sense, but I've never felt compelled to try a mincemeat pie. The aroma of the ones I've been near have not been enticing.
- Katy S
My grandmother used to make Mincemeat pie and made her own mixture, which yes, did include suet......however, there is no meaty taste....just sweet. Now you can buy mincemeat in jars to make pies, but there is no longer any suet added to it. She used to put "hard" sauce over the pie...that's just butter, confectioner's sugar, and booze.....like brandy, rum or whiskey....it was the best part!
- Bonnie Foster
I like mincemeat pies from time to time. I've never had one that tasted like meat, though, and if meat was part of the mix it was barely recognizable.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
modern meaning of minced meat is identical to that of ground meat. IOW, minced beef = ground beef.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
My grandmother used to make it when I was a kid. It was like an extra spicy raisin pie. I ate it and didn't hate it, but then, no one ever told me it actually had MEAT in it! I thought it was "mincemeat" in the same way that the edible part of a nut is "nutmeat." Once I had eaten it, it's probably best that I didn't find out what it really was.
- Mark "DerBingle" J
No, but what you can buy the filling (and mostly) what's made has changed from the original recipe. Still, its quite good if you like a very sweet pie. I recommend Nonsuch and Crosse and Blackwells. I would not recommend that you get the reconstituted (in the box) on your first go at it even though it is cheaper. It's rather nasty and will definitely put you off mincemeat forever. :)
- Melanie Reed
And don't forget to add the Brandy! Most important! :)
- Melanie Reed
+++ Bonnie. Agree it is the best part. :)
- Melanie Reed
This is the cookbook I have which has a good mincemeat recipe: "Great British Cooking: A Well Kept Secret" by Jane Garmey It has a great forward by Calvin Trillan p.254
- Melanie Reed
I'll bet that's an interesting book... The British aren't renowned for good cooking!
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Lindsay, yeah. Ive enjoyed and tried several of the recipes. Colcannon, Poor Knights of Windsor, Toad in the Hole, Bubble and Squeak are a few of my favorites!
- Melanie Reed
Mince meat is actually chopped dried fruit, as in mince pies
- Ian May
I've never had mincemeat with meat in, only dried fruit. Tradition may have stipulated meat many years ago.
- Ian May
@Joe, I didn't know there was a difference... I was asking about the dish that seems to be served around this time of year. :)
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Minced in England is what is ground in the US
- Ian May
but mincemeat (usually one word) is dried chopped fruit.
- Ian May
If one goes into an English butchers shop and wanted some ground beef, one would ask for mince, or minced beef.
- Ian May
@Melanie --What? Mincemeat involves Brandy? Well that explains a lot! @Joe --I shall cling to the hope that my grandmother's version did not, in fact, contain meat.
- Mark "DerBingle" J
Mincemeat can and does vary a bit between commercial brands, and home made (which some do lace with alcohol)
- Ian May
mincemeat pie is okay, but i'll go with apple or razzleberry or even cherry if i have to.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
@Mark I hope it explains good things. :) btw- a side note. If any of you have seen the remake of "State Fair" (with Pat Boone) putting brandy in her mincemeat is what wins the Texas State Fair competition for the mother. lol
- Melanie Reed
There is a lot of crap sometimes between US and UK about food and drink. Americans are led to believe English food is bland and the beer is warm; Britons are lead to believe that Americans eat nothing but donuts and McDog, and all look like those 'people from walmart' pics...
- Ian May
*Joe, Was Texas Transplant and lived in North Corridor of Dallas for 2 years. Loved it. Still consider them a "second home" ;)*
- Melanie Reed
@Ian: we do eat WAY too many corn-related products, that much is true.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
Melanie. I quite often make Bubble and Squeak, and I made Toad In The Hole recently too
- Ian May
According to my copy of The Oxford Companion To Food, while mincemeat "rarely contains meat nowadays," it often did in the past. Some recipes today still contain suet. "The beef was sometimes partly or wholly replaced by suet from the mid-17th century onwards, and meat had effectively disappeared from 'mincemeat' on both sides of the Atlantic in the 19th century."
- Katy S
And yes, I own an 850+ page reference book about food.
- Katy S
Is there anything that there's not an Oxford Companion for? :D
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Similar to what I remember being told about the origins of mincemeat, and why it was called such.
- Ian May
American meat is largely banned in the UK, due to the use of growth hormones. UK beef was banned here for a good while due to mad cow, It's a crazy world.
- Ian May
HFCS fucks me, I'm unpleasantly allergic to corn
- mjc

I largely avoid HFCS myself. I'm not allergic to it though
- Ian May
HFCS is really bad for everyone in many ways. avoid it as much as you can.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
We mostly eat fresh meat and produce here
- Ian May
Not fanatical about it, I just prefer it, The palate doesnt have to have a high fat high salt high sugar diet.
- Ian May
Hey! I like mince pies- with mincemeat. Weird yes, nice also. But then, I like Marmite.
- Pete
I consider this conversation both entertaining and educational ;) My grandmother rocked the mincemeat (in both pie and cookie form) every year around this time - and suet, suet, suet was the magic ingredient as it is with all the old recipes in our family. I don't even know how I would go about buying suet if I needed to.
- Holly Rae
Pete thanks for that. I will look into trying some.
- Melanie Reed
Holly - If you ask most butchers, they can get suet for you. I've seen it in one of the grocery stores here every now and then, but a butcher is your best bet.
- Katy S
it does not have to be vinyl, but I will always appreciate vinyl.
- Mary Carmen
What'll you do in the future -- check out his iPod?
- John Dupuis
Actually I do check out his ipod, his blip and last streams. I ask about what he is loving at the moment. I would break up with someone if they had little to no passion about music, more than what they are listening to. I have pretty broad and eclectic tastes. More than anything, I want them to be passionate about it.
- Mary Carmen
What type of bands would be a deal breaker for you? Is this more genre specific or are they're certain acts that turn you off?
- Davis Freeberg
I think for me, popular country would be a deal breaker.
- Mary Carmen
I have to say that I used to say this, but had to forgive my wife for her love of John Denver. Sometimes upbringing leaves lifetime scars.
- Jeremy (on vacation)
Mary, I'm right there with you. Oh, and I need some vinyl. Like 10+? Not much, but enough.
- Kendra <3 Three Lions
Please dont break up with me because of my shitty music collection!
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
lol...Colleen is there something you should tell me? Are you a dude? Is our homance totally fake?
- Mary Carmen
Oh, as long as music doesnt enter into the homance, that's okay. I keep my country tunes far from you :)
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
except when im in your car.....lol. no worries, i still love you.
- Mary Carmen
don't hate me for my lack of affection for country music.
- Morgan Haley
I am not really as concerned with bad taste, as I am with no taste at all. For many reasons, music is incredibly important to me. I grew up literally surrounded by it, it has always helped me through my treatments and illness, and almost every fun time I have had has centered around it in some way. I must have someone who enjoys it as much as I do.
- Mary Carmen
I went for the worst of the worst.... The Cure has at least grown on me.
- Jenthemum
So I'm guessing my chipmunks christmas album prolly...
- WarLord
I like the Chipmunks Christmas album.....in December.
- Mary Carmen
one of the reasons i got with my SO was that he collected CRASS records (and OpIvy) as obsessively as i collect stupid punk bands. mutual appreciation, baby.
- Kendra <3 Three Lions
nope, tho i do rate Johnny Marr as a guitarist. but i don't think they've collaborated in ages.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
I'm a music freak and used to feel the same way about dating men with bad/no taste in music, but I got over it. When R and I started dating, he wasn't really into music much, but some of my taste rubbed off on him and he actually got into some bands and started bringing cool music to me. Win.
- Kaijsa Calkins
I'm a firm believer in prerequisite questions about music before you ever date someone, there are somethings you just need to know.
- Holly Rae
I like music, but it's not a *passion* I haven't bought music in ages, nor downloaded. And as for films...
- Pete
Way to step it up, there CW! Thanks! Thanks, joey. I really like this pic, too. :)
- Josh Haley
btw, Trish is still asleep. She and I (mostly she) were up almost all night with sick baby Zoe, who wouldn't stop crying. Trish is the best. THE BEST, I TELL YA!
- Josh Haley
Happy 15th Josh and Trish. You guys are the best couple I know (other than Mom and Dad....and Tom and Katie....and Ren and Stimpy). Congrats to you both! Good job raising 4 great kids too!
- Morgan Haley
well, 3rd best actually, when you count dad and the groom....well, maybe 5th best when you throw in some of the other guys....but i was skinny and had long hair, which was nich.

- Morgan Haley

Ha! That's the dude I had to fight and kill to win over Trish. ;) Thanks, Mona
- Josh Haley
You and Trish give me hope that there is such a thing as happily ever afters :) All you need is a sense of humor and tons of love. Thanks for sharing your lives with us and happy anniversary!
- Mona Nomura
what's amazing is that they really are happy. like clams. like really happy clams. and it's pure joy silly happiness. this couple, along with their wonderful 4 kids, are proof that this world isn't doomed yet. i am lucky to be linked to these clowns. keep it up josh and trish. show the world that it really will be ok in the end. much love. and tell the kids that uncle morgan says 'shut up!'.

By Josh's response........... I feel like I have been lead astray by this translation site...

No, it's all good. You said "Bottoms up" which I will admit, I don't hear very often even in English. But `okole is an automatic laugh word for me, since it means BUTT, BOTTOM, REAR, ASS. *giggle*
- Josh Haley
To Josh-n-Trish, Happy Anniversary, you crazy kids! <3

We are having Sonic blasts now. It's cold enough that the perishables in the back will last. FYI Morgan, the ingredients for toffee butter crunch are in the back, too. You deserve a million bucks, but you'll have to settle for yummy candy. Thanks all!

In CivicsLab, players will assume positions of power in the community from an urban, suburban or rural perspective and explore how decisions-based on social need and demand, proper planning (as defined by our civic experts), political pressure, and most importantly, their imaginations-might impact the community. Through manipulation of real mapping information and current data sets, students navigate social and political pressures to explore the cause and effect of civic investment and public policy as they attempt to create a sustainable future for their region."

"Streamlining AND Enhancing Your Presentation Delivery As an educator, it is highly likely that you use your computer to deliver all kinds of electronic presentations using PowerPoint and/or Keynote software in your classroom. While you could control your presentations using the keyboard or the mouse of your computer, you may prefer, either for ease of use or just to enhance contact with your audience, to deliver your presentation from afar using a remote control device. Nowadays, there are a vast number of USB-based remote control devices on the market for doing just this task. However, these often require more hardware...a "clicker" you hold & a USB "dongle" that you connect to your Mac to allow the task. While this works, believe it or not, you can streamline the process even further by just using your iPod touch with its Wifi connection to act as your presentation remote control!"

We were at a show, I think hers. Me and two friends (don't remember who). She was over at the side of the stage talking with some of her friends, and I looked over at her, and she came over and sat down with us, with a couple of her friends. I fangirled for a second, then got over it, and she was cool. She remembered my name. Then, it was suddenly later, my friends were gone, and I was...

I will go on record to say that I actually like Eagle and Talon, I just find it difficult to recommend them the way I do most bands I know because they're not immediately pleasant to listen to. Kim sings a lot of songs higher than is natural for her register, and while both the guitar and drumming are good, they use a lot of offbeat rhythms and melodies that sound really chaotic, but I...
