Those of you who talk about "inbox zero," do you mean getting rid of unread messages? Or do you literally get your inbox empty?
My goal is to file or delete all the messages. Right now, I would be delighted with Inbox 100. - maʀtha
A lot of us are referring to Merlin Mann's Inbox Zero series: . For my part, I try for less than a screenful of un-dealt-with inbox. I'm not there at the moment, I admit. - RepoRat
Yeah, filed or deleted so there's nothing in the inbox. I get there every once in a while. I get twitchy if I have more than a screenful of un-dealt-with stuff in my inbox. - lris
what iris said. - holly #ravingfangirl
Yep, nothing at all in the inbox once a day is my goal. - Steele Lawman
I make up for all of you with my email hoarding ways. ;) - ellbeecee
Inbox 914. - DJF
you're not even close to me there, buddy. Inbox 6,000 and counting. (I can hear the gasps across the country from my admitting that. Breathe, everyone. :) ) - ellbeecee
I follow the Getting Things Done method of do, delegate, and defer, so I aim to file or tag for follow up all messages every day. I get there at least every three days. At this time of year, I give myself a pass to have a few more. - GretelSK
I'm not an evangelist for inbox zero--when it comes down to it, 6,000 messages in "inbox" isn't that different from 6,000 messages in "saved mail." So it all depends on what makes you feel less anxious and what allows you the freedom to do the stuff you want to be doing, rather than fretting over email. - Steele Lawman
My goal is to have no scroll bar, with everything still in the inbox a legitimate "to do." Everything else gets filed or deleted. - Kirsten
I'm with Kirsten - right now, I'm all unread with about 50 unfiled message. (some I leave in inbox because they make me smile, like this from lolhusband >^•.•^< ) - Stephan!e•CogSc!L!brar!an
Right, for me, less in the inbox lowers my anxiety. If I remove stuff from the inbox before I deal with it, I forget about it entirely. - maʀtha
Something that's helped me get my work inbox down is a 'for meetings this week' folder. I can stick stuff in temporary holding there and I try to clean it out every other week, by then the meetings have passed - Hedgehog from Android
Same as Kirsten - everything in my inbox is something to deal with, and I never leave more than 10 in there. - Lily
Thank you ellbeecee! DJF! I am ashamed to admit this, but I actually started printing out emails relating to stuff that needed to be fixed on the new website. It really helped me to be able to touch and scribble "done" or "followed up on...." I've also learned that I'm very good at GETTING organized, but dreadful at staying that way, so I have made friends with "search Inbox" and tried not to feel less loser-like. - Rochelle *boom* Hartman
My inbox is like 2700. I love search. - laura x from iPhone
Filed, deleted, and followed-up-on. My inbox is my workspace, though I do call "inbox zero" only when the items flagged for today or overdue are completed, and when there are no new messages to process. - Holly's favorite Anna
I have a "pending" folder, which I guess is kind of cheating? But it helps lower my anxiety as well. - YvonneM
I like to have less than a screen of stuff pending, and archive or delete the rest each day. Time out of the office is tough, though. - Elizabeth Brown
I lol at the idea of inbox zero, though I live to delete. - kaijsa
after this thread I did go delete some. when I left for the desk at 4, I was down to around inbox 4000. - ellbeecee
*fistbumps Ellbeecee and Laura X* It must be a Laura thing. ;) - LB: Ratchet Bear from Android
I too am a "search" person. I periodically clear out list messages which helps knock things down. I think of the email addresses I use most often, the one with the least messages has around 750 (unread), the next couple have around 2800 (unread). Then there's alter ego's email which has around 18,000 (unread). Basically, I skim the subject lines and often don't bother to do anything beyond that. - Katie
It *is* a Laura thing! Personal inbox 6,431. Work - who knows but there's 2176 unread ... - Laura Norvig from iPhone

Does anyone have a chili recipe they love? I'm doing a chili cook off at an Alzheimer's unit on Wednesday and I'm looking for something different than what I usually make.
if you can stretch the definition of chili, i consider my favorite chicken enchilada soup recipe to be a kind of chili. you could just call it chicken enchilada chili, for that matter. i can find the recipe. (eta: this one: - holly #ravingfangirl
INGREDIENTS 2 lb. lean ground beef or ground turkey. 6-8 stalks celery, cut into 1/4 in. slices. 1 onion, finely chopped. 1 can (30 oz.) chili beans (do not drain). Tomato soup (26 oz. can).   METHOD Fry meat and onion.  Drain any excess fat.  Add sliced celery and stir fry for 2 minutes.  Put into a large cooking pot and add beans,  tomato soup, and 1 cup water.  Simmer at least 15 min. before serving. This can be simmered for a much longer time, too. - Micah
My fave is a white chili. Ground turkey seasoned with Worcestershire sauce, diced onion and garlic, a can of diced green chiles, a can or two of white beans, and tons of cumin, coriander, and cilantro. Salt and pepper to taste. Yellow bell pepper if i'm in the mood. - Kirsten from Android
Holly - I'm not sure I can stretch it for this, but I will definitely be making that for myself. Thanks, Micah & Kirsten! I'll try both of those. Anyone else? - Kristin

This is mostly for publibs: Do you take payments and/or donations online? If not, why not? If so, are there negative issues in doing so?
We just started fines a year or two ago. The background auditing and security were our concern. We signed up and integrated a (I think) Paypal based solution. We started with our bank's merchant services folks and worked from there. We have seen an increase in fine collection, because we think folks like taking care of their fines in private. Our foundation has a separate deal for online donation. - ♫Jorge Covert, Trainer♫

Evanston Public Allows for online fees I think there is a minimum I had to hit ($2?) before it'd let me pay online. I think if you have fees under a dollar you can still check things out. - Hedgehog
We do not, because then we'd have to deal with, like, technology. Actually, starting Thursday we'll have an ILS that would make this possible if we got credit card processing, which we don't currently have because money. - laura x
HCL: Can pay fines over $2 online, no extra fee to do this. If fines are under $10, retain full borrowing privileges. - maʀtha
we just started last year, using the SmartPay module from Comprise because it met all the crazy standards you have to meet for PCI compliance and integrates into SAM which we already use and our ILS. - holly #ravingfangirl

LED Lights Are Ruining Laundry Detergent's White-Brightening Trick
"LED lighting is great. The right bulb gives the same warm incandescent glow you love from a fraction of the energy. But there's a downside: while LEDs make cities look awesome, the most common type of LED lighting dims the ultraviolet trick laundry detergents use to make white clothes look whiter. The future is bright, but it's also kind of dingy." - holly #ravingfangirl from Bookmarklet

Professor suspended for Game Of Thrones shirt that threatened community college kingdom * Newswire * The A.V. Club
"Confirming yet again that the halls of academia are no place for interpreting things, a New Jersey professor was suspended over a Game Of Thrones T-shirt whose tagline--the Daenerys Targaryen quote, "I Will Take What Is Mine With Fire & Blood"--was interpreted by his colleague as a threat. The incident came about after Francis Schmidt, who teaches art and animation at Bergen Community College, posted a photo of his daughter doing a yoga pose in the shirt to his Google+ account, where it was seen by the people who actually use Google+, such as easily riled deans. Said dean reportedly called for an emergency meeting, concerned that this small, unsettlingly agile girl in a T-shirt was Schmidt's way of announcing his intention to claim all the spoils a New Jersey community college has to offer, by force if necessary." - Andrew C (✔) from Bookmarklet

"where it was seen by the people who actually use Google+, such as easily riled deans." *snerk* - holly #ravingfangirl
I've never seen Game of Thrones, but I would hope that grown-assed adults would assume a child in a t-shirt on a personal site is not a veiled threat to work colleagues. And I'm sure the psychiatrist is going to be thrilled with having to waste their time with a stupid evaluation. - Anika - "But revenge appears to be a theme in both the show and Schmidt's life -- he believes the suspension was retaliation for a grievance he had filed earlier after he was denied a sabbatical without explanation about two months before the incident. "This was payback because I filed a grievance," he said."" - Andrew C (✔)

IOW, any excuse for those with power to take offence is a good one. same as it ever was. - Big Joe Silence
"Schmidt was suspended without pay and forced to undergo a psychiatric evaluation before being reinstated with a list of other restrictions, he said, such as not wearing clothing with questionable statements and not making disparaging statements about the college. " It would be really hard not to say something about a college with administrators that bone stupid. - Spidra Webster
