going to a picnic thinger on saturday, need to bring an appetizer. difficulty: it's over an hour away, so nothing warm works. can't really count on refrigeration either. hmmm...
oh! i have some reusable ice packs and little coolers from mailed medications. perhaps something that needs to stay cool will be an option. - holly #ravingfangirl

Anyone here ever leased a car?
I did, and it worked really well for me. Did you have any specific questions? - holly #ravingfangirl
I'm just starting to ponder it, because at some point I will actually need to get a car (I'm borrowing one at the moment), but I'm sort of sick of buying ancient cheap cars, and I have no money, so this seems like a good option. But I've never had a car I had to worry about cosmetically, which is really my only hesitation. - laura x
So, that is not helpful in terms of specific questions. :) I'm just casting about at the moment. - laura x
we did, but after we leased it, we really wished we had bought it instead. we have never leased one again. - Marianne
problems: 1) they were a pain in the butt about the cosmetics even though it was still in great shape, 2) it ended up being almost as expensive (month-to-month) as buying it would have been and when we wanted a different car we didn't have a trade-in. - Marianne
Ugh. I currently have no trade in and no down payment, which is the only reason I'm really considering this route. - laura x
yeah, that's why we did it too, but then it turned out to make things mildly worse instead of mildly better. it wasn't the end of the world or anything, just not a great idea after all, for us. - Marianne
Luckily I do not have to make this decision immediately. Just eventually. - laura x
Yes. It worked very well for me. I drove limited miles and took exceptional care of my vehicle. Any lease will be about as much per month as a purchase but you have to remember the lease model has people who constantly want new cars in mind, not those who can't afford a vehicle. One plus, of course, is that you don't have to worry about maintenance (although make sure you do those X-#... more... - Soup in a TARDIS
I think sometimes there are lease-to-own options? - lris
With one exception (all hail, 1998 Honda Civic) I have never had a car that lasted me more than a couple of years, because I've always had to gamble on old used cars. I wiped out the last of my savings on the last of those lemons, which brings us to today's unhappy state. - laura x
Check with credit unions. They often have low to no downpayment and lower interest rates. - sglassme

For folks like my mom, who can't have dairy or soy, it's nice to have an alternative, but she's also the sort of person who isn't drinking gallons of it a month. - Jennifer Dittrich
Interesting article, although it's too bad the comparisons between cow's milk and almond milk aren't more direct. I would love to know how much water it takes to produce a gallon of each. - Brian Johns
It's low carb, so it's good for ppl who need low carb. - WoH: Professor MOTHRA
related but sort of a threadjack: starbucks just added coconut milk to their menu. - holly #ravingfangirl
Gallon of almond milk takes 200 gallons of water, gallon of dairy milk takes 2,000. What with the feed and the cows. So yeah, let's have that sustainability discussion. - kendrak from Android
Interestingly, on NPR many years ago I heard a discussion about how city cyclists tend to consume organic foods, including stuff like almond milk, and thus, even though they're not polluting the atmosphere with car exhaust and depleting fuel reserves, they're causing an equal amount of stress on other resources. I don't have a dog in this race; I just remembered that after reading Kendra's comment. - Akiva
Organic food and sustainability is sort of interesting, but honestly nothing stresses the environment like meat and dairy production. Informed consumers should recognize that. I'll leave transportation issues out of this discussion. - kendrak from Android
Understood. Unfortunately, all I eat are milkburgers. - Akiva
I bet they are delicious. - kendrak from Android
I would be interested in a comparison of greenhouse gas emissions from almonds and cows. Also? Soy, like HFCS, is in everything now. I try not to intentionally add it to my diet. I used almond milk for my cereal in the US, but they don't have it here, so I have pretty much given up on milk entirely. - Jenny H. from Android

book suggestions needed! a new series for a 7 yr old who likes American Girl, Magic Tree House, 3rd Grade Detective.
Has the 7 year old read the Clementine books by Sara Pennypacker? Or Louice Erdrich's series that starts with The Birchbark House? (the latter might be on the verge of too hard) - Katy S
The Eleanor series by Julie Sternberg (starts with Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie, 3 books total) or The Top-Secret Diary of Celie Valentine by the same author (a new series launching October 1, 2014). - Soup in a TARDIS
Oh, and maybe Ivy & Bean - those books are very popular, as are Bink & Gollie. (but, in this case the latter might skew too easy) - Katy S
Super fudge fire errbody! - Joe "The Anvil" Pierce from Android
How about an old series: Encyclopedia Brown? - Deborah Fitchett
I was pondering Encyclopedia Brown when I was looking yesterday! and I just saw Ivy & Bean when I wa on amazon today and wondered if they were any good. :) keep the suggestions coming! I am so excited because she's just getting to the age where I can start buying her some of my favorites from when I was a kid! wheeeeeeeeeeee! - holly #ravingfangirl
Naturally, I think of more as the evening progresses: Geronimo Stilton is very popular and might work well for her. There's an associated series with Thea Stilton, Geronimo's sister. Dan Gutman's My Weird School books are fun, too. - Katy S
I loved Encyclopedia Brown at that age fwiw. - Brent Schaus
Thinking more, I also loved the Secret Seven. (I never got into the Famous Five, but that was probably by chance.) I've still got original fiction I wrote that was clearly *very* inspired by it. Nancy Drew's *probably* for slightly older children. Oh and for a standalone, Harriet the Spy. - Deborah Fitchett
