i was actually just looking at them, julian. i've had pretty much no problems with my last 2 Dells (other than problems that were caused by me) but i'm annoyed at the current configs and you can't customize much anymore.

I almost went with a Dell, but then I got impatient. Went with an in-store purchase of an Asus. I had picked out a Lenovo, but I was able to get a really good deal on this one with a bigger screen.

the big decision i need to make is size. SIZE MATTERS. i have a 15" now, and i can't decide if i'd be okay with a 14" screen.

I just got an Asus A53E from Amazon for $560 (spent another $21 for 4 GB more of memory) and it's pretty nice. Intel i5 dual core. About the only complaints I have so far is that the keyboard isn't the greatest, either that or I'm getting old as I make a lot more mistakes on it than other keyboards, particularly of the missed key variety and the fact that the power adapter plugs in on the side and not the back. But it runs pretty cool and while it only has an Intel graphics card, it's still fast enough to run World of Tanks.

Unfortunately, their website makes it very difficult to find out what's what.

I love Lenovo Thinkpads. I have a T420s (s = slim model) that is fantastic. Also a X61 which is equally epic

I have the Asus K73E. I love that the top of the case is hardly ever warm.

Both my wife and I have Lenovo Thinkpads and they have been absolute lemons. But we seem to be the weird ones.

I've been entirely happy with my Gateway; my wife's been happy with her Toshiba. WIIINNNDOOOWSS 77777...see, I can do it too. Mostly find a keyboard & screen that suit you. (Geez, my Gateway's getting old, but it's still more than fast enough for everything I do...)

If you are not into the Mac (MacBook air = best laptop ever) I'd go with a Lenovo. Solidly built, good support.
