"Do you always need to reboot the computer and/or start Windows Task Manager? Look no further than Ctrl+Alt+Del, a handy tool which does just that and nothing more."

Is it sad that I've been Ctrl+Alt+Del for over 15 years I never thought to use the delete key by the number pad? on a mac now, so I guess I have an excuse, but wow...
- WiseYoda (aka Patrick)
lol i want - i also want a windows-e version plz
- Allen Stern
WiseYoda, or the one-handed Ctrl+Alt+Delt, is the Ctrl+Alt on the right with the closest Del button. Gosh, I'm such a geek. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I always love a good analog solution!
- Ciaoenrico
This is going on my Xmas list now! :-D
- Phil Harrison
Are u still using this combination for freezing Windows Operating system :) ahahahahaha
- Bahaeddin [ MacinLife ]
Windows still freezes? What, are you using 98?
- Jeremy
Do not start with your comparably crappywise OS7,6 of same days !
- Acharad Sami vanJoulee
This is pretty funny. Oh, and I had no idea that that using the numpad '.' for del overrode the Num Lock when doing CTRL+ALT+DEL. Interesting. I can already do the one-handed three finger salute quite quickly, though. Plenty of training and all.

“There is no specific London style.” At least that’s what the ‘Super Contemporary’ show at London’s Design Museum proclaims. During an exploration of London’s art and design scene in September 2009, what did emerge was a city with a unique sense of its own personality and history, a fertile hub of international thinkers, and a community working towards a future that is designed to be interactive, environmentally responsible, and prosperous. Here is a look at the visual personality of London, based on visits to the city’s major art museums, attendance at the 2009 London Design Festival, and interviews with artists and designers who call the great city home."

Her: What is this long crazy word? Me: Typewriter? Her: What the heck is a 'typewriter'? Me: It's what we typed with before computers. Both kids: *BEFORE* computers? OMG.
They're still laughing thinking that I lived before home computers. I realize it's because they're used to 50 and 60s movies with room size computers.
- Anika
And pre-cellphone? Telephones used to be connected with wires and if you were out you had to use a payphone!
- Nick B.
Oh man, when I explained payphones to them a couple of years ago, they oldest acted like I was making stuff up.
- Anika
I had to explain what a rotary phone was yesterday to mine after we saw one in a movie. The look on their faces was priceless.
- Sels
My optician showed me the eye test for young children. One picture was of a black rotary phone. Every kid identifies it as a T shirt.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
A friend in Texas took her kid to the optician and their eye chart for kids were corporate logos. She was pissed and walked out to find another doctor.
- Anika
Corporate logos seems particularly bad from the perspective of being able to test the ability to see. They are, by design, very distinctive and recognizable, even if blurry.
- Andy Bakun
Me and my friend were playing the old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game on his XBox 360, his son came in and commented "the graphics are so bad that doesn't even look like a video game." ...I suggested we wash his mouth out with soap.
- Joe Pierce
A few weeks ago, I put in some classic Atari disc in the PS2. My daughter said, "No wonder you and daddy wear glasses. These games make my head hurt!"
- Anika
I have an Atari Flashback 2. Who wants to play Combat?
- Eric @ CS Techcast
This is why I've always maintained when I have kids they get the video game progression I had. Start with Atari and Coleco-vision games, move on to some old school computer games (Oregon Trail and Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego-like) then NES, then SNES/Genesis, then Playstation etc.... ....It may be for the best that I don't have kids, I've put too much thought in here.
- Joe Pierce
OMG Eric, when I told her we used to play Combat for hours, she looked at me like I lost my mind. The boy declared it "boring". And they went to play with lint to prove their point.
- Anika
I think I'd better start ours on Yars' Revenge right away. He's been playing Little Big Planet for a while- don't want him to get spolied! :)
- Matt Mastracci
My kids are weird with what versions they like to play/watch. They prefer the older versions of Sonic or Pac-Man, but the newer versions of Super Mario.
- Anika
haha..............they wouldn't know a phone with a cord
- VAL D.
Have you ever tried to explain the rotary phone to them?
- Joe Pierce
...then we stood up and walked to the TV and turned a dial to change channels but it dodn't matter there were only 3 CBS, ABC, NBC but Bonanza was in COLOR... yes I am old thanx for asking
- WarLord
I don't have to. They've seen rotary phones in the wild. We almost bought one at the beginning of the year, but figured it wasn't safe. They've seen phones with cords...we do have a fax machine.
- Anika
The other day someone asked me if we still had a TELEX machine at work.
- Nick B.
And all this is pretty funny considering my daughter thinks we need to go back to using quills to write. She already told me that for her birthday, she wants a quill and ink set.
- Anika
When I was young I wanted to write with a quill, until I tried writing with one. Not so easy.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
Same here. I think she'll outgrow it. I hope she will, at least.
- Anika
Maybe she does think I'm *that* old. We're watching Storyteller. I said, "I used to watch this as a kid." And she asked, "In black and white?"
- Anika
I usually tell my niece and nephews: "Before Youtube..." lol. It helps contextualize.
- anna sauce
You walked to the TV to turn the dial? The dial had fallen off our TV and we had a pair of vice grips on the stub where the knob used to be in order to change channels.
- Andy Bakun
You know, when I read this earlier, I immediately though of the scene in Ferris Bueler's Day Off where the principle is on the phone with Cameron claiming to be Ferris's girlfriend's father but thinks it's Ferris, and Ferris calls on another line and they show the blinking "on-hold" light dramatically. There's a lot of passing the receiver around and avoiding getting twisted up in cords. Then, later in the day, this movie was on.
- Andy Bakun
Happy Birthday, Kol! Thirty three was a pretty good year for me and I have a feeling you're going to LOVE It :) Best wishes, congrats and go celebrate!
- Holly Rae, FFer
Thank you v much, Dee. Hope you're well?
- Kol Tregaskes
Many Happy returns, Kol. 33? Oh yes, It was back there somewhere. Not a memorable one, but left to my own devices I don't bother about my birthday.
- Ian May
Happiest of Birthdays..................33 years old ...........boy both my kids are older thinking as I type this I am getting older by the minute.......................
- VAL D.
Who uses I'm feeling lucky anyway? Do you? imho that's the worst thing created - and because of IFL I had to change my keyword.URL preference everytime I install firefox. *very* annoying!!!
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
we already using the keyboard to type, so it's better to execute the search command via keyboard as well. also that "I'm feeling lucky" button made me lose "the game" so many times. so I'm happy. lol.
- Bora Mesut PALAS
Onur, interesting link, I liked the quote: "It's possible to become too dry, too corporate, too much about making money. I think what's delightful about 'I'm Feeling Lucky' is that it reminds you there are real people here," Google exec Marissa Mayer explained.
- Stephen Mack
Bora: for entering the search term yes, however the results are usually navigated by mouse
- Mike Chelen
I'm going to say it was better to keep the button for those who do not understand the internet as well
- Lindsey is Fierce!
I agree with Lindsey. I won't miss the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button but it's useful to have a button for less web-savvy people.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
why require anything be clicked? the autocomplete can already return immediate results, those could be shown immediately as the user enters or changes the search query
- Mike Chelen
from IM
This is great idea, I hardly ever click on the button. But I think for less web-savvy people it will feel something gone amiss.
- TrafficBug
press any key to continue... now where is this any key?
- ffcode
I love this, but I can't wait until it's implemented system wide, but I guess the option to have buttons fade in will be necessary until users get used to it. (It will slow down the page a little :-( )
- Nathan Snyder
I think this will help educate the masses about not clicking buttons.
- Kamilah Gill
A subtle first attempt to convert the masses to vim and kill the rat :p
- Maxamad
and a text next to the red-rounded-text for "I'm feeling lucky": "Wish you luck"
- Ali Erkurt
A nice UI change. But not all would like that. Some people (especially non-tech people) prefer to have UI elements like buttons, checkboxes etc. With time they would adapt to this.
- Abi
But why remove the buttons? I'd like to understand the negative impact of keeping them there.
- Matthew Ogston
I usually follow responses back to the source because I'm nosy like that but this one I love as is. Kind of don't want to have it in context.
- pea ♥ fierce as a woozle
Thanks everyone. I couldn't have asked for a better turnout. The space was awesome, had some FF love from Jason Toney, Melissa, Anna Lynn, and a surprise visit from Anna Haro! But seriously, you were all there in spirit.

"That's where the tree gives each leaf a push, leaving it increasingly dangling. "So with that very slender connection, they're sort of ready to be kicked off," says Raven, and then a breeze comes along and finishes the job. So the truth is, the wind isn't making the leaves fall. It's the tree. The tree is deeply programmed by eons of evolution to insist that the leaves drop away. Why? Why not let the leaves stick around? Why drop? Raven explains that leaves are basically the kitchen staff of a tree. During the spring, summer and early fall they make the food that helps the tree grow and thrive and reproduce. When the days get short and cold, food production slows down, giving the tree an option: It can keep the kitchen staff or it can let it go."

Plus leaves are the perfect mulch to keep the shallow tender hair roots of a tree insulated in the winter. They better serve the tree on the ground in the winter.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
One of the best children's books I've ever read is called The Fall of Freddy the Leaf. Sad as hell, but this totally reminded me of it.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Cool. I'm always amazed at how tenacious leaves are in the wind. We get huge storms and leaves whip around like in a sky sized blender yet they stay on. This makes a lot of sense as to why.

Thoughts? To be quite honest I hated my multi-touch-pad on my recent MacBook Pro purchase but have grown to really love it. I wonder if the same would be true of the new "Magic Mouse."

Looks very tempting to me, I went to order one but the store was still down. The scroll balls on my mighty mice are consistently short-lived and I haven't seen anything else out there that looks compelling. I wish there was a wired version though.
- LogEx
LogEx: I agree, a wired version would be preferred. I like the mighty mouse except for the fact (just as you said) the scroll ball is terribly unpredictable and sometimes decides not to work at all. I am guardedly optimistic that the "magic mouse" will be an interesting step in the right direction.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
I don't know if I'm unique or not, but the way I hold a mouse would not work for this.
- Kenton
The ergonomics look quite iffy, but nevertheless it is quite nifty.
- i80and
i80and: Yeah I agree it looks like it could be a bit awkward, definitely a "try before you buy."
- Nicholas Kreidberg
had the opportunity to try this the other day - very much like, much better than buttons and scroll-wheels. Felt comfortable in the hand. Multi-touch is a nice idea in a mouse
- winckel
winckel: Awesome, thanks for the update! I will have to pick one up sometime this week.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
well Friendfeed is looking a bit pale these days. Not the same kind of party as before. So I would say Friendfeed : Dead, Scoble : Alive

"Since its debut in 2002, Bill Willingham's "Fables" has been the flagship title of the Vertigo imprint, spawning a successful ongoing spin-off, an Eisner award-winning original graphic novel, an upcoming mini-series and, most recently, the original prose novel "Peter and Max," which delves into the story of the Peter Piper. The idea of fairytale characters exiled into the real world appeals to readers because of their familiarity with the characters -- or at least the kid-friendly version from Disney. But how would the Vertigo revamps stack up against their all-ages counterparts? We've asked Invincible Super-Blogger Chris Sims to put some of our favorite Fables against their Disney counterparts for a head-to-head comparison to find out!"
- RAPatton
"When you get right down to it, the Prince Charming of Fables is sort of a total bastard. A three-time divorcee due to his rampant womanizing (his wives being, in order, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella, with assorted dalliances during and after), Charming nevertheless turns out okay in the end, first as a surprisingly adept Mayor of Fabletown and later as a genuine war hero...

Their major difference comes in who they spend their time with:...

they are issuing hardcovers right now, but you chose wisely picking up Blankets. If you get Monica to read it, she will love it too
- RAPatton
She just read the first Runaways hardcover and then plowed through all of the single issues I had of the series. She's due for another comic.
- James Ferguson
Blankets is very much a graphic novel, more than a comic. It isn't episodic at all. It is one long, beautifully illustrated story about first love, and it is based on Craig Thompson's real life.

"Add some simple style to your winter wardrobe with Clarks Originals Wallabee ($130). Based on Lance Clark's original comfort shoe from 1965, the Wallabee is a hand-sewn moccasin featuring a suede upper in one of three shades, plantation sole construction, and a mid-height cut. Their simplicity isn't likely to wear well with dressier attire, but they should go great with plenty of other garb, from jeans to pajamas."
