"If you're a fan of cooking blogs (which if you're reading this is likely) then you may know Molly Wizenberg simply as Orangette. One of the early and most popular blogs focused on food and cooking, Orangette has won the hearts and minds (inside joke) of many people with its casual, intimate prose and unabashed love for time spent at the chopping board and stove."

I have always been entertained by the fact that we (people in general) are impressed by simple concepts as long as they're in another language. Like, why get a tattoo with "love", "happiness", "strength", "courage", etc in another language, particularly an Asian script, when you could just have the non-ambiguous word in English tattooed instead? The romantic in me understands it, but...

Lindsay: Interesting... I've always been drawn to the Asian scripts, even if I don't know what it says. Never understood why. To me, it's so artistic, so beautiful. English looks boring in comparison. In fact I'm enamored with everything Asian - language, dress, food, etc. Maybe because it's different from what I see everyday...
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
@Jannifer - yes, I think the attraction to foreign languages has a lot to do with it being different from what you see every day. For instance in Aikido we use the Japanese terms for everything... So there are techniques named ikkyo, nikkyo, sankyo, yonkyo and gokyo which all sounds kind of cool and exotic (and looks it especially if you see them written in the katakana). But they...

Jill - YES I'm serious! I'll get with you once you get into your new house...

Lindsay - OMG Are you into Aikido Martial Arts?? Oooooh I've wanted to get into that form of Martial Arts for years! It was my dream for so long. Then as I got older, I pretty much gave up on the dream - had to put my kids first, not enough funds to take martial arts, life became severely difficult, etc... Now that I'm too old to do something like that, the only thing I can do is decorate with the symbols. *Sigh*
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
Jannifer - yes, I train in Aikido. I'm a brown belt, been training for more than 5 years now. I teach the kid's classes at our dojo too. It's a big part of my life. I don't know how old your kids are but having the whole family train is a good thing. Tad also trains, though he has had some health issues that have kept him from going as much as he wants to. He actually started before I...

Lindsay - you're living the life that was once my dream! Anyway, my kids are older teens - the oldest one wants to get into a different form of martial arts. My husband isn't interested in martial arts. I'll always and forever be fascinated with and love martial arts, especially Aikido! ~ P.S. - I have you on a pedestal now ;-)

"Who knew that being organized could be so beautiful? When I was shopping around for a better way to keep track of all of my odds and ends, this time I decided to get a little creative. Instead of looking for the same old French Message Boards for photos or chalk boards for hand-written reminders, I decided to look a bit deeper. That’s when I found the Daily System. This sucker has it all. Corkboard, cubby holes, slots for cameras and digital photo capabilities. You can buy bits and pieces of what you’d like to use, or the whole shebang. A set includes whiteboard calendars, pinboards, letter bins, office organizers and other goodies."

Even if you buy organic, it's a good idea to wash your produce before you consume it to rid it of germs or residue. While water works, a wash can help you use less water; they're also effective at forcing out any bugs. Here are two fruit and vegetable washes that you can make at home that will be cheaper than any of those products you can buy...

A 100 year old authentic German grain sack. Can you imagine? THIS is the prize! The fabric AND the ink, the whole sack is the REAL DEAL! In fact, it is SO AWESOME and rare it has a value of $450! It is a work of art from history, pure craftsmanship made to last hundreds and hundreds of years. These sacks were made to be extremely durable! As Kymberley points out on her website, they had to be thrown in the back of wagons, they were crafted to be left laying out in fields and strewn about mills.

How to make Foolproof Pie Crust - Ingredients: 4 cups all-purpose flour * 1 3/4 cups shortening * 1 tablespoon sugar * 2 teaspoons salt * 1 tablespoon vinegar * 1 egg * 1/2 cup very cold water
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
okay, so what *is* shortening, exactly? does it mean butter?
- Marie is merry.
Marie - no not butter (although I think some use better instead)... shortening is the Crisco brand you'll see next to vegetable oil. It's softer than butter and some melt it and use it like vegetable oil,
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
aha! thank you! i will try this recipe soon.
- Marie is merry.
My mother was big into melting the Crisco to get every last bit out of the can. Her way of doing this was to place the can directly onto the burner and turn it on. One time she left the can on the burner to go do something else. While gone, the can overheats and somehow caught the cabinets above on FIRE! It didn't spread past the cabinets, as my dad put the fire out quickly. So... don't be tempted to melt the last bit of Crisco left in the can by placing it on the burner! :-/
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
oh, that's horrible and awesome at the same time. i will not put the can on the burner. :)
- Marie is merry.
OMG! I have been searching for this recipe for YEARS!! Someone in my family made it years ago and I could never find the recipe! If this is the one I'm thinking of, this is very delicious!!

"Mommy, Mommy...there's something under the bed. No, we were never afraid of monsters. The night light was a design statement. But at Jellio, we're always willing to take a fun memory like that, and turn it into something cool for the home. Take the Boogie Man Rug...our tribute to night time ghouls everywhere. Place it under your child's bed and they're sure to have the coolest room on the block. Or just place it in the middle of a room to reveal a monster who's actually a little afraid of you. Fun, right?"
