Does anyone have any experience controlling a TiVo with RS-232 or ethernet?
Is it something that can be done by consumers (or installers)? - Cristo
What do you mean Controlling? There are hacks you can do that will allow you to manage recordings and do other nifty stuff. Google the Tivoweb project. - Gunny doesn't side-hug™
Tendonitis, I want universal remote functionality that operates as fast as native IR even thought the TiVo is in a different room than I am. So far, RF to IR is way to slow. - Cristo
Stephen Mack may be able to assist with this info. - Jimminy
Jimmi, he hasn't yet. The dude is a slacker. ;) You'd think he'd have a TiVo saved search thingie going. - Cristo
Has he blocked you, normally he's pretty quick with the TiVo posts. - Jimminy
People don't block me anymore since I turned nice. - Cristo
Was going to mention that. The Cristo of past and the Cristo of 2 months is very different. - Schadenfreude
Cristo, have you tried the i.TV app for iPhone/iPod touch? As long as you're on the same wireless network as your Tivo, you can control it from anywhere. It will also allow you to schedule remote recordings where ever you are over 3G/Edge. It's pretty cool actually. - Kevin Pedraja
Kevin, no. How does it control the TiVo? Through ethernet? Is there software you have to install on TiVo so it is listening all the time? - Cristo
Ah, okay. Network Remote Control is a feature on TiVo, but you have to enable it. Now hopefully there is a published API for this. - Cristo
I don't think there is a published API for it at the moment. - Justin Whittaker
I have my Tivo connected to my wireless network using powerline adapters. One connects to the Ethernet port on my router and into a wall outlet. The other goes from the socket behind the Tivo into the Tivo's Ethernet port. It works quite well. i.TV provides a representation of the Tivo remote on your iPhone screen. Response time is good. - Kevin Pedraja
Kevin, I tried it, but it wasn't nirvana. Some of the key presses didn't always register, although when they did, it's much faster than RF to IR. I wonder if it will work for two TiVos, and how it decides which to control. - Cristo
I'm not sure in a network environment how it handles multiple Tivos. The remote scheduling feature works just like Tivo.com, which lets you choose among multiple Tivos based on the names you've given them. - Kevin Pedraja
I'm not all that interested in remote scheduling because I'm trying to use it as a remote control for multiple TiVos stored in a media closet. I can see TV from wherever I'm using it. I'd be happy with a little box that read the IR from the standard TiVo remote and translated it into TiVo network commands. The TiVo remote already has a switch for which box you are controlling. - Cristo
Cristo, I work for i.TV and the remote control functionality will work for two TiVos within the next couple of weeks. We just submitted an app update to i.TV and it's just a matter of time before Apple releases it. Just an FYI. - Justin Whittaker
Thanks Justin. - Cristo
This is interesting. Looks like there is a telnet interface: http://www.slashgear.com/tivo-ne... Shouldn't be hard to build my own app for this. Anyone know of a place to get IR codes online? (I'll need them for controlling TV Power / Input / Volume ) - Cristo
Forgive me if I misunderstand the problem, but wouldn't IR extender help? I have a couple of Leapfrog systems in my house that work great (on all three levels of the cabin). - jcunwired
