"The half-smoke is Washington D.C.'s signature street food, but nearly impossible to find outside of the D.C. area. By some definitions, it's not technically a hot dog. Otherwise, it has all the traits of a historically significant, regional variation of tubular meat—in this case, a mildly smoked, natural casing beef and pork sausage—on a bun.The meat is coarsely ground and spicier than a standard frankfurter. At Ben's Chili Bowl, a D.C. landmark and the most well-known place for a half-smoke, they are grilled on a flat top to a dark crispy char (not unlike the Chicago "Char Dog") and covered in homemade chili, onions, and mustard, served on a hot dog bun. The half-smoke has some really powerful flavors—the combination of the charred spicy sausage, mustard and slow-cooked chili is really incredible, and a big surprise if you're expecting something like a regular old chili dog."

It's not the dog so much as the fixings (at least to me). I used to get 'em with saur kraut (sp), chili and extra onion, maybe a dash o' cheese and some mustard. They were reasonable back in the days when I was at school, filling and sinfully good. But I've had 'em with regular dogs, smoked sausage (which I'm thinking most people would say is the most authentic), even turkey sausage.

I'm all in favor of cutting the the tax rate for everyone to 10%. Just eliminate every single corporate loophole, tax break and subsidy, too. Something tells me the "free marketers" out there wouldn't like that very much.

I might go for a flat tax if it was something like X% of every dollar above $Y. The problem with a pure flat tax is that poverty-line families are already spending all of their money on necessities whereas upper- and middle-class families can adjust their elastic spending on luxuries to match economic conditions.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to be regressive. 0% tax for people below a certain income level and 10% for everyone else is fine. My belief is that while the system is allegedly progressive now, there are so many loopholes and breaks, not to mentions subsidies (which fall outside the tax system), that corporations and wealthy individuals don't pay anywhere near their ostensible marginal tax rates.

Are there some choice examples FOR INDIVIDUALS you can recall, because I could use some help. Also, I've never met this Blackstone individual you refer to, but he sounds like a nice guy.

Another outrageous tax loophole is for hedge fund managers (each one of whom is an "INDIVIDUAL"). They're paid a service fee - a percentage of total assets if I understand correctly - but managed to get their income (incorrectly, IMO) taxed as investment income.

I have a question about the healthcare reform plan. If the public option is approved, why wouldn't small biz owners drop their existing insurance program and switch to the public option (cheaper)? Other than competition for employees, I haven't found a compelling answer. Just looking for an answer, not a debate on the pros/cons of HC reform.

"I'm not sure where the spark came from, but sometime last week I set forth on a mission to create a meatball sub. I figured this would be laughably easy. From what I could tell, there were only four elements: meatballs, sauce, bun, and cheese. But most recipes waste well over 12 ingredients on meatballs alone, which put them out of the Dinner Tonight territory before I even began. My goal then became to make a tasty meatball sub in less than an hour using as few ingredients as possible. And I needed to make the meatballs from scratch. For help I consulted the Joy of Cooking, which cut down the meatball ingredients without compromising loads of flavor. The sauce stumped me for a while—until I just picked up a freshly made batch from my local market. I'd suggest using your favorite simple tomato sauce. The meatballs are the real star. Scientists in Korea have been using the virus to cure lung cancer (in mice, at least.) South Korean scientist Myung-Haing Cho modified a lentivirus, a genus in the Retroviridae family which includes most mammal immunodeficiency viruses, to deliver to lung-cancer tumors a gene, which inhibits cancer cells from reproducing in mice's lungs. Their method of choice? A nasal spray. They had various cancer-ridden mice sniff the modified lentivirus twice a week for a month, and they found that the modified virus completely halted the progression of the lung cancer without harm to the non-cancerous tissue. In some cases, existing cancer cells even died off without further therapy."

been waiting for this for a long time. Now you can seamlessly browse Cooliris in a browser tab enabling you to cmd-click / ctl-click images and have them load in background tabs to fave/comment/etc later. This new release is really great news.

Humm. Seems that its only works in browser view, if you hit the fullscreen view and do the command click it closes out and goes back to normal. Still opens the tab behind though. So, almost there for me :)

I have Kreg, this is far better than Slideshow. The ability to increase both size and speed with the mouse is massive. I've seen nothing on the web more visually enticing for photos than Cooliris.

Thanks for the info. I had it once but didn't find it useful, the new version looks much more useful. About the hyperlink: if it takes you to a page that tries to get you to use cooliris than it best be used in moderation. When photoplow started up and encouraged chatters to post comments to photos with the line "seen in a discussion on photoplow" there were spam complaints in the help...

Yeah, I hear you Theresa, but browsing a pool/set/etc using it is just so damn beautiful and now that they've got the cmd/click piece down it makes it fully operable as a way to both browse photos and interact. That should take care of any problems.

For pages that have 2 Media RSS feeds, Cooliris 1.9 would find the one with id="gallery". That feature was handy because you could have one blog-style feed with media and another slideshow-optimized feed. The feature is missing in 1.10 and 1.11. Will it return in a future release?

They still haven't implemented the one or two features which I consider most important. 1. The ability to Fav (on Flickr) a photo without leaving the Cooliris interface. 2. The ability to comment on a photo (on Flickr) without having to leave the Cooliris interface. Having to bounce in and out of Cooliris, even if just between browser tabs is very disruptive.

Is there a way to make Cooliris open a picture in a new tab just by control clicking the main picture? The only way I can get the new tab feature to work is to control click on the tiny arrow at lower right...
