"As a PR guy I would say this: 1) let’s get rid of mind numbing, brain killing, right out patronizing advertising we get on TV, radio & billboards… 2) let’s run our press releases through the Bullfighter (http://fightthebull.com/bullfig...) of PressReleaseGrader (http://pressrelease.grader.com) before sending them out tot he world… But let’s do it in that order…."

"Hi Shannon, Great list and I still can’t understand why PROs within companies (and agencies for that matter) take so long to “upgrade” their newsroom… I have been convinced from the start that a blogging platform like WordPress would be a good one to make this easy and user friendly for most of us communications types with no IT/Web background. So what is your solution ? A specific WordPress template you had developed ? If so, please share it with us and I would be interested in the contact details of the developers as well, even though I am using http://www.pitchengine.com now…"

"You are so right. Very sane and down to earth blogpost. People should have the right to a fair election but we shouldn't forget that a lot of other regimes want to influence what's happening in Iran based on their own political agenda... Sadly, most of the times (if not all) it has little to do with the people and a lot with geopolitics.."

"I completely agree with the above... You can not compare the crisis management activities of a multinational with the pressure group activities of a union. If this shows something then it shows that groups of individuals can have a certain amount of "share of voice" the same way well oiled PR departments can have. I like what you do BL but this "comparison" doesn't do it for me. The J&J contra Red Cross case is to my knowlwdge a better one to show that you need to be engaged online in order to have get the benefit of the doubt by the online community.</p"

"I have just been appointed as probably the first Belgian CSMO and these are the job characteristics: 1) the function reports straight tot the CEO. 2) the responsibility covers all use of social media, for internal and external collaboration and communications. 3) the functions is cross business unit and cross company 4) I do not "sit" within the communications, nor the marketing, nor the IT department. With regards to skills - it is not because someone Tweets, or blogs are is on Facebook that you have the needed skills to manage social media projects… Most of the time these have much more to do with change management than being "fluent in the latest tools"… Of course, we'll see how he function works out but I am very eager to start and would love to share my experiences with other CSMOs out there… PS: I am an ex-IBMer and have been involved with social media there as well…IBM is a different world than 99% of the companies out there… My former employer has an advance of about 5 years..."

"Hi Stephen, Great imagery use here… It is completely true that today’s information can have this explosive way of getting around but on the other hand I am a bit skeptic about the origin of the “risks” here… If a company plans to use social media within the enterprise then of course these new tools will have to comply to the security infrastructure of the organization… just like their email system has to comply…. The rest is educating employees about how to use their tools in a secure way, making them aware that “tailgating” can be dangerous for the company, as well as copy/pasting sensitive information to a Facebook page… The problem with security of data most often resides between the chair and the PC… Lots of companies are spending loads of money on infrastructure security but then forget to educate people on a regular basis. I think this is far more dangerous…"

I'd suggest it's because "new" is scary to the enterprise. They want something that is proven and established. Good move.
- Louis Gray
@Jason inspiration. I am working on a deck.
- Steve Rubel
good. i started using digital media and online media last week in conversations and got a lot less ???-looks. new media required explanation.
- Admiral Anika
True. "New" is not only vague & ultimately meaningless, but something can only be "new" so long. "Digital" is more accurate.
- Paul Rodriguez
like that. Especially when new is no longer new.
- Joe Buhler
similarly, the BBC renamed its New Media and Technology division a while back. It is now called Future Media and Technology.
- Luca Belletti
from fftogo
The only problem with this is that outside our little sphere, plenty of people still consider "media" to be old media: print, TV, radio. The Internet itself is still a scary unknown for a lot of people and companies--even very large ones--still. Start talking about microblogging or social media, and they'll think you're playing some sort of goof on them.
- abacab
Agree with Gregory although I use "social media" as I think it is the social aspect of it that makes it different with "old media"... but in the end of the day it is "media" indeed.
- Philippe Borremans
I dropped "social" and "new media" and "2.0" - and I used to call it "digital media" back in the day (1998).
- l0ckergn0me
agree. 8/10 times i have to explain what i mean
- ray
I like "SM" because it sounds kinky and obnoxious at the same time
- Noah David Simon
honestly, it might confuse people. digital right now means that switch for TV to a lot of people.
- Patricia
i've been using "emerging" instead of "new" for years - folks get it
- mike "glemak" dunn
I was saying that a year ago on a CES panel. Of course, it was a "new media" type panel so it wasn't very well received.
- Russell Holliman
I do think this is in part why collectively whole industries like media, internet, etc. need to determine names for things. just one guy deciding it should be called digital media often coincides with another guy wanting to call it new media, and so on. switching things up like that makes it harder to train audiences and get them to adopt. Slower adoption makes everything harder on...

Don't you mean *online* media? TV, radio, CDs, DVDs, etc., all have *digital* forms.
- Brent Logan
I think I ditched 'new media' around 2001. Digital & Social Media almost covers the bases, but because it's really alien and unknown territory, definitions are difficult to make stick. Interactive media still has its place, but even 'emerging media' is going to be dated once somethign has emerged.
- David Petherick

I never liked to term New Media, I have beedn using either Digital Design or Digital Media for like forever

I had an interesting discussion with my team last week regarding the terms "digital" vs. "interactive"
- Christian
david: that is why i personally use "emerging" because once it has emerged you can call it something else, so it only refers to those forms of media that are truly emerging for their day...
- mike "glemak" dunn
steverubel i still think interactive describes the medium best just my 2 cents
- Jason Cronkhite
from twhirl
Digital is good, better than "social" it is more neutral and more accurate imho.
- Tom Foremski
Digital is insufficient, IMO. Most media is/can be digital, but that doesn't make it social or interactive.

from twhirl
I think "new media" could mean whatever is newest at the time.

Basement of hate. This is a picture of the Berlin Wall and the garage wall underneath the building that held the Nazi headquarters. When you visit this site you can feel the hate. It's something I can't describe. The pictures on the wall and stories show how hate built.
The history that took place on this site is stunning. Something I've always wanted to visit to understand more. The hate built starting with everyday words by everyday people, grew into little stupid laws that codified that hate, then moved to bigger actions. Only time to stop it? When it's simple words. Something I need to be reminded. Who says words don't matter? Not these walls.
- Robert Scoble
Words are our most powerful technology.
- Chrimmus Tad
Berlin is a very sobering place to visit. So much to see but so little of it is due to a happy past.
- CJPhoto
I can't like this. Not even for bookmarking. What angers me is that people forget this lesson of history, and atrocities are repeated every day.
- Mo Kargas
Oh wow, Robert. Thank you SO much for sharing this, and your words. It blew me away... I love technology
- Mona Nomura
Mo: I understand that. There's no love in this building, that's for sure. By the way, this is my first test of FriendFeed's new photo upload. Worked great! Love how the photo shows up on my blog's sidebar too http://scobleizer.com
- Robert Scoble
I still have a tough time watching the documentaries. The pics are important.
- Charlie Anzman
Yeah, the new FF image handling is great. And that's a powerful picture.
- Chris Baskind
But I rather upload the photo to Flickr to keep it in my photo library and let Flickr update FriendFeed, FaceBook, etc. Not sure I see the benefit of uploading the photo to FriendFeed.
- Julio F ~ @SocialJulio
Robert. You are right about the 'little stupid laws'. That is why the versions currently being passed in Italy against the Roma are so worrying.
- mattpovey
There's a lot of really emotionally powerful stuff like this in Germany. If you're travelling about a bit, make sure you take the chance to go to Dachau, near Munich, too.
- Mark Ng
Mark, indeed. Dachau is the one that really brought it home for me. The stark and sterile nature of the whole place really demonstrated how much of a systematic process this was. I was there in winter and I stood in the parade ground for about half an hour just to try and get a glimpse of what it was like. I couldn't hack it. Knowing that hundreds of people stood there for hours on end chilled me more than the conditions...
- Johnny Worthington
Can I also note that Germany is a great place with wonderful poeple... It is one of my favourite countries. Beer Halls = All sorts of drunken win. While there is no relation to this topic, I think it is not said enough :)
- Johnny Worthington
My mom grew up in Germany, so I agree.
- Robert Scoble
We still have chips of the wall from that exact spot, hacked by my 6-yr-old daughter with a claw hammer one weekend after the Wall fell open.
- Bernie Goldbach
@john it was the ovens that did it for me. But I second your note about great place, wonderful people. The Germans are some of the best people in the world.

A good friend of mine visited some of the Nazi places, and he described feeling sick at his stomach as soon as he was getting close to them. I agree with Gregory, the "energy" is real, it just doesn't have mass or volume so it is harder to quantify.
- Charlene Kingston
Completely agree... when I visited Auschwitz in Poland (years ago), it was not the horrific pictures, nor the "information" I had about the place but this gut feeling that overwhelms you once you set foot on those premises... Writing this I can still feel it.
- Philippe Borremans
I was in Berlin in Feb and saw the Topography of Terror. There is a bad vibe there. However I think this (from a trip in Poland was worse and much more disturbing).http://inao.blogspot.com/2006... and the fact that the Nazis then sold the hair.http://inao.blogspot.com/2006...
- Ina
No need to go to Munich for Dachau; there's Sachsenhausen right outside Berlin. Before the Ostblock fell, it was an even more interesting exhibit for some slight revisionism to fit the communist POV. It's since been 'fixed'. You get a pretty good (authentic, real) vibe there like at Dachau or any of the others more complete/preserved camps, imo.
- abacab
You're probably not going to able to see it on this trip but the Kehlsteinhaus (Hitler's retareat in the German Alps) is a must-see
- Steven Cains
here are my photos from dachau - http://flickr.com/photos... - it's near munich and worth the trip - as you walk down the long road to inside the compound, you can feel the screams - i thought i wouldn't be emotional there, but i was. there were a lot of people sitting on the benches crying

The deepest human sadness in my life was visiting Dachau, concentration camp in Germany when I was a boy.

Interesting. I have noticed the "feeling" of places and situations before (never like this). The recent case was when I visited the great Buddha shrine at Kamakura, in Japan. As I approached the statue I was overcome by this great sense of sadness and compassion. The other odd thing was that on returning from the same trip, as soon as we were in the departure lounge of Northwest at...

"Hi, Social Media as such are just platforms right… So if you understand RSS - the concept of automatically syndicating your content - you’ll be able to think “platform independent” and handle all those social media through a limited amount of feeds… For the more “personal” pages on Facebook etc… try updating all of them at once using ping.fm or other related services… Kind regards."
- Philippe Borremans
"Hi Michael, It is true that in Europe a lot of daily newspapers were born out of the propaganda machine of political groups (later parties) way back in the 18th an 19th century and that in some cases you can still sense the political “background” of some newspapers. Here in Belgium almost all newspapers were born out of political struggle. However, the quality of their reporting is so high and their bias so limited that you can refer to them as “independent” newspapers. I think that in principle, a government should stay out of any kind of medium (be it press, TV, Radio) but that the day to day reality of private and state owned media is here to stay… And let’s face it, we all know that in the US Fox is as good as the government’s news channel and that some newspapers are so biased that their reporting has to be taken with a serious pinch of salt… A more interesting phenomenon is the creation of a citizen journalism school by the founders of OhMyNews… but then we’re into another..."

"Hi, For the Europeans reading this; there’s another service called Zong which I covered on my blog. In short it does the following: RSS2SMS, Z-Quiz (setting up an SMS quiz), Z-Vote (voting per SMS), Z-Box (comments/feedback per SMS) But Z-Pay is definitely a new interesting angle… Z-Pay allows you to sell content (ebook, whitepaper, prime content etc…) from your blog/website and readers pay by SMS. I tried the RSS2SMS service and it work very well. Now I am writing up some good content people will want to pay 2/5€ for and I’ll try the Z-Pay thing. Zong, the company, was also present at 3GSM"
