Wow! I just knew you could track your Twitter and Friendfeed Clickthrough Rates with this website: http://twurl.nl/4aai7v I must be slow... :( I just realized how powerful Twitter is after making a new Twitter account for my niche... Well, better late than never...
Art, if you're slow then I'm the slowest of the slug god's slithery something. Er... how does it track your "Clickthrough Rates" - anyone got a link to a tutorial? Looks like you relinquish your twitter account in favour of a tweetburner account. Isn't that a bit dodgy?
- Isha (Marysia)
Oh no. You don't have to give your twitter account. Just sign up for an account with them, then paste your URL in the box, and it will shorten it. Then press share, then close the box, and it will track the clickthroughs for you. The URL will be tracked in the Archive Section. I'm still trying it out actually...
- Art Y.
does tr.im have tracking a tracking service Haim?
- Art Y.
Oh. Actually I think you don't need to press share... Just shorten the URL and it will start tracking it...
- Art Y.
It shows you how many times the link was clicked.

Anyone use Yahoo Updates? "Yahoo has fired up a major part of its Yahoo Open Strategy, the ability to broadcast blog postings, tweets, photo uploads, Yelp reviews, and other activity to members of your online social circle." - http://news.cnet.com/8301-17...
"The change to Yahoo Updates makes the company potentially more competitive with services such as FriendFeed and Facebook, which do much the same thing, though they also offer to show activity on other services including Amazon, Digg, and Google Reader."
- Isha (Marysia)
Looks promising, although let's not forget what Ed Dale have told us before, that FriendFeed is also a searchable database. Not sure if Yahoo will have something similar
- Hector Sanchez
Yes. I'm not rushing to use it - I'd never even heard of it before this piece of news.
- Isha (Marysia)
Off topic really but I know for sure that Yahoo is using a DB (at least for email contacts) because they prompt me to "connect" to anyone who's emailed me (including spammers) or vice versa over the past several years! I'm wondering how this differs from MyBlogLog which is a Yahoo Service doing (seemingly) the same thing. FWIW I'm able to feed a FF RSS to MyBlogLog.
- DaleK
I got a tweet Guru Bob about that spy program Dan tweeted about... "Only been using Brad Callen's PPC Web Spy (http://www.ppcwebspy.com) for a few hours and I wonder how I did without it for keyword research!"
If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.
My personal thoughts are that the web spy program is quite cool for looking at other peoples adwords keywords etc. but don't get sucked into the upgrades where he suggests that you can make money by branding it with your own aff links - it reeks of MLM
- Lisa
So true Lisa, Good lookin' out! If you use it and you're not a Platinum member, the links @#1-3 are for the platinum member above you when it is on. (Amazon Links, etc..) It's straight up MLM be careful even though it's a good tool for getting 10 keyword phrases on the free version.
- Kenneth Hamilton
I do hope people think very carefully about the platinum upgrade. The platinum users are a closed market, there will be a (relatively) small number of them marketing to... themselves. Your mind may keep inserting thoughts of the open internet market and the dollars you can make, when in fact that is not the case. How many sales to make back the initial investment? to how many people? for how many affiliate product searches? Just because there are big names, don't make it right or...dare I say ethical
- Allison
I just bought the PPC Web Spy at http://bit.ly/bUrR and I found that if you pass on the first offer of $97 you are offered a downgraded version for only $47 dollars. The only difference is that on the downgraded version, you only get top 50 keywords instead of the top 100 that you are offered in the $97 version. Still good enough for me. I did some tests and it does an outstanding job at showing the keywords of the Adwords ads while you are browsing the web. So give it a try http://bit.ly/bUrR
- Hector Sanchez
Does anyone know if it works on a Mac?
- Mara Dower
Mara, it's a Firefox add-on so it should plug into your browser whether you are on Mac or PC, as long as you have Firefox (and seems to work on Flock but that won't be guaranteed)
- Lisa
Eureka! My market really did tell me what product they want and yes, its not what I planned to do before all the market research but even better there isn't a comparable product available! World DOMINATION is mine! (Well at least in this microniche)
Since October 2008 it is possible to link to a specific point in a youtube video. I use this when i blog a video review in my niche. Here's how to deep link http://www.youtube.com/blog...
Ok. So, I'm having a bit of an identity crisis here. I want to use my pen name online because I value my privacy, and don't really fancy the idea of one day having thousands of raving followers watching my every move. On the other hand, I want to use my real name, because I personally like my name.
My name is everywhere. Google me :) -- I think privacy is an illusion, so I just post stuff as me. I'm my own brand online or something.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Get over it, you're on the internet as a marketer, you need to be marketing You Inc. I am in online network marketing and it's all about marketing you. People don't buy products, they buy you.
- Greg Martin
I agree with Greg. You want people to find you, don't you? Most professionals use their names. Most spammers hide behind a handle. How do you want to be viewed?
- Amy Boyack
Well, there are hundreds of successful people who use pen names (such as Dr. Seuss, Agatha Christie, and more) and are still able to keep themselves professional while getting people to know them... Hmm... What does everyone else think?
- Art Y.
A name is simply a brand - don't let the ego get involved in business. If you ever want to sell that brand down the track or change into a different market, then a pen name is not a bad idea. For example, if you became an expert on photography as John Smith and then you wanted to become an expert on macrame, then from a branding perspective, you would not really want John Smith...

I am with jenny, use your real name.... You're No DR Seuss :-) ...The names you mentioned are offline... People are skeptical already online (as they should be) Give them a reason to trust you... start with honesty on who you are... This also includes not blocking your information on your domain information.. If I am unsure if something is on the up and up I check the who is on the domain.. I would not buy from your site... information is blocked
- Mark South
If your name is really unique then it will be easier for people to track you. I don't think Mark S has a lot to worry about ;-)> You may want to consider a unique pen name for articles so you can track them in the search engines. Putting "quotes" around a unique name with a middle initial is easy. I would personally use my real name on a product - be proud...unless you don't want your mother to see it!
- M Zhaduleus Billadeau
Hmm... Another tough decision in life... Anyone in here who uses a pen name mind sharing his or her experiences? Mmm... And those using your real names, anyone been mobbed by the paparazzi before?
- Art Y.
Does my name show as Mark S on here or Mark South?
- Mark South
Oic... But if you're using a pen name, how would you get paid your paycheck? A paycheck has to be in your real name, does it not? Also, I've never used Paypal before, but when people pay you money, can they see your name?
- Art Y.
Just be yourself... then no worries :-) Your following Ed's teachings right? WWED what would Ed do? Fortunately we don't have to ask... Provided his real name is Ed Dale :-)
- Mark South
Ed says that he always asks what Dan Raine would do, and that the answer is always that he would dance naked in the garden...
- Isha (Marysia)
LOL. Ed real name is Edward. He is Ed Dale in IM Market. But I don't know his name when he is marketing in a niche or micro niche.
- Buff Toast
Err... I think he did mention that he also calls himself Ted Legend?
- Art Y.
Ok. Thanks everyone for all your advice... I guess I should use my real name then... I won't have to think so much about things. I guess it shouldn't be too much of a problem, as long as I stay clear of the paparazzi radar ;) But I'll do it for my next niche. I've already used my pen name everywhere for my current niche now, and it's too late to change.
- Art Y.
Well, just for a short moment I'll try how it feels to be the mysterious Internet Marketer whose true identity is unknown. He owes allegiance to no one, and comes and goes like the wind... How exciting! :)
- Art Y.
Art, this is turning into a very intersting thread! Used your real name in credit on my site btw!
- Inspired Writing Research
I certainly will be using different personas for different sites. You honestly think Ed Dale and the other v successful internet marketers used their own names on all their niche sites - come on!? And do you really want everyone to be able to put your name into google and discover your keywords? For your affiliate programs you give your own name, so no probs with the checks. This is...

- Isha (Marysia)
I'm using a pen name.. For me it's the same as a company name. Brand the name grow it and sell it. It's just an asset, it's part of the business. Unless you name has already value in the market, I would suggest that you find a pen name that gives you zero results in google. And use it as you pen name. This way you can set a google aler on your pen name and folow it.
- Juan Pablo
I use pen names on niche sites for three reasons 1. Dan Raines most awesome google trick 2. If I used my name they would be ripped off faster than father Christmas delivers presents 3. Much easier to sell web the time comes!!
- Ed Dale
I think using pen names is the way to go as Ed says although I'm sure there is a right and a wrong way of doing it. Maybe someone that is already doing it might share with us some quick tips about using a pen name in a niche market, from a marketing perspective
- Hector Sanchez
Heh heh didn't Ed just do that? Also look at that 30dc forum thread I posted above, and others on the same subject.
- Isha (Marysia)
THANK YOU Marysia, Pablo, Ed, Hector, and everyone for all your advice! After reading the last few comments as well as that forum thread, the lights went on inside my head! I've never thought of my pen name as being a separate name for my business before. I've always thought of it as another name for myself, which made me very uncomfortable. That is great!
- Art Y.
Heh, I'm dancin & boogin here in my lil ole London flat - you got the lights!
- Isha (Marysia)
In real life, a business is always considered a separate person from it's owner to avoid problems. Now I know exactly what to do and how to do it! Thanks a lot! I think I will create separate profiles on my Flock or Windows for different niches and pen names, to make password handling and bookmarking easier. Come to think of it, even in the music scene, nowadays people are making their own albums, and putting crazy animated Frogs on it as the composer. It works well, and people love it too!
- Art Y.
Finally, my problem is solved, and I can continue on my quest for awesomeness (for which there is no charge)! Thank you again everyone.I really appreciate all of your comments. Just a simple change of perspective, changed my look at the whole situation.
- Art Y.
Thanks Marysia for giving the link to the 30DC forum discussion on this topic, very interesting. I just have a question, if I want to use a pen name, what about the face picture if for any reason I have to use one and not an avatar? What do you guys recommend?
- Hector Sanchez
Umm... Well, I'm thinking about maybe using a hand drawn picture of a cartoonish like character for my face picture. Wonder if that would be good?
- Art Y.
Great question Hector. Scole (Shannon) I think uses a friend, who also does his appearances for him. If you search hard enough on the forum you'll find where he writes about that - it might be in the same thread. On my hubpage I use a photo of me where I'm just not recognisable as the same person. Maybe time to get out those old photos, or borrow a friend. Or perhaps digitally adjust a photo?
- Isha (Marysia)
I guess the branding is the most important. I chose my ishabluebell username on the ole internet to represent the real me because my nickname (Isha) was usually unavailable, and I was just tossing anything onto the end of it in desperation. I flung bluebell on there because I like bluebells, & conveniently a friend had taken a recent photo of me in bluebells. Now I can use a load of bluebells instead of my face for branding if I want. I aim to do it for the background of my twitter page v soon.
- Isha (Marysia)
Oic... That's a great idea too Marysia. :) I can start planning about branding my niche about my name...
- Art Y.
By the way.... what is Dan Raines most awesome google trick?
- Art Y.
I think that Dan Raines most awesome google trick is in the preseason of 30DC (2008 version). If I'm not mistaken, it is mentioned either on the Google Reader or Google Alerts lessons
- Hector Sanchez
I've been thinking a lot about this thread. If we are going to eventually become leaders in our niche market, (i.e "lead a tribe") then I think it is inevitable that our face becomes visible at some point in time. For example, If I start doing YouTube videos for my niche, my face would be visible, unless I do only Camtasia tutorials, so maybe the whole point is to use a different name...

- Hector Sanchez
I think you should try to establish different images or even identities for different niches. You should consider your reputation and credibility. If you establish a good reputation in one area, do you want to dilute or diminish it by claiming to be an expert in many unrelated areas. Think about Bob Villa, by sticking to home improvements and tools he has become a household name. If he suddenly started selling in an unrelated market like computer software, I think he would lose credibility.
- Peter Johnson
Well... you probably don't have to show your real face. One solution I thought of was maybe to get a custom made mask of another person's face and wear it everytime you do a video. Or sit in an arm chair with the back of the chair facing the camera while you're talking, like those unseen characters in movies. Such as Charlie in Charlie's Angels?
- Art Y.
Or maybe making your body visible only from the neck down... Crazy ideas, I know... But I would use them... probably... maybe... :)
- Art Y.
You didn't know this stuff included acting too? LOL **MAKEUP**
- Ron"micronet"Harwood
I have been posting daily videos on YouTube for just 4 days and I have already found them on three other websites and blogs - my advice to all - MAKE SOME VIDEOS - by the way, as Ed says, I am improving my style and way I speak and look on video everyday. All the best, Tony
Has the value of Squidoo and Hubpages fallen off since they were recommended in 30DC? They are not showing as links to my sites in google or Yahoo.... and though I got one up to position 1,000.. as soon as I quit putting daily energy into promoting it... it fell off...
I was on a telecall with Howie this afterneoon and he said to focus on WetPaint, Blogspot, and Google Knol.
- M Zhaduleus Billadeau
I still get lots of hits from Hubpages for various topics and I've gotten no tractionfrom WetPaint or Google Knol. I

My Squidoo lens is on the first page of the keyword search returns, and has been there ever since I created it 3 or 4 months ago.
- Isha (Marysia)
Oh - but I do keep on updating the lens. I don't know if that makes a big difference. An easy & quick way I update my lens on a regular basis - I started a text section called "mykeyword journal". Then you can go in once a week or something and add the date and some brief comment. You can also add another affiliate product to your lens - that's another way to update it.
- Isha (Marysia)
Thank you Marysia Has anyone else had this with Squidoo? how about for Hubpages?
- Mark South
I still just can't seem to get into using Squidoo. I think I've got enough to do with my own sites, which are more about building my brand and message. Also the reason may be because they don't seem to have much individuality to me. I created several lenses a couple of weeks ago in a few micro niches and haven't done any work on them since.
- Rob Cooke
I agree, Squidoo & Hubpages I think have dropped of in G popularity since the original 30DC & I'm now concentrating on marketing my sites via other means - which are a lot less time consuming, but with the same or better results than Squid or Hub
- Steve
so at this point no one has said hub pages are getting them anything links or traffic, Right?
- Mark South
Definitely no links or traffic since early December. My November hub had 584 views and the December one had 4! Both were bookmarked in the same way so it seems the change is perhaps not in our control.
- Kim Baillie
I listened to another guru recently and he said wetpaint.com is now better than squidoo although I hadn't heard of this site before
- Pam
Mark, they're (Squidoo) is making changes right now and things will even out in a week. I don't know about Hub pages but it could be your subject or niche that is falling. Just a thought...
- Karen
They are loosing strength without question. Dan is about to explain our testing on the edge.
- Ed Dale
Aha - are they losing strength because of twitter? I spend less time searching now - and more sharing lol !
- Inspired Writing Research
That could be a reason :) I have a few of my lenses on the front page of google, but they come and go, and drop and rise... And very unstable for me I feel, which is why I didn't want to concentrate too much on using them...
- Art Y.
I did finally find a couple of my Squidoo lenses in Google... it was not easy had to an exact search for a sentence.... But have never seen any of my Hub pages in search engines and not seen a visitor from there either... I think for the time being I will stick it out with Squidoo... But stop adding hubpages Perhaps I will try an article on wetpaint to test it out.
- Mark South
It appears a few have gotten Hub Page results, I would love to here more about recent results from Hubpage
- Mark South
No one talks about it much, but I have found Weebly to preform better than squidoo for me! Also, I think people should start investing a bit of time into SCRIBd. I think Google will start to favor those in the future. Just a thought though! Great thread.
- Michael Roberts
I will not even go to a Squidoo page, to many of them are just like a huge advert. Most have no useful info but, they have 20 scrolls of 'buy links'.
- Sheryl Loch
