Why does Apple make it so hard to retrieve windows that end up off-screen due to using (and unplugging) multiple monitors?
Microsoft has the same issue. - CW™
you can click drag from expose I believe. If you use spaces it's even simpler. - Josh
Nope... Expose shows the window, but clicking on it simply returns it to it's off-screen position. And if I enable spaces the window will still be off the screen, within the first space. - Carlos Granier-Phelps
Even tried activating Spaces, assigning the app to all spaces... won't work. Opening the Spaces view (F8), then doing Expose and dragging the app to a new space won't work either. it'll still be off screen. - Carlos Granier-Phelps
Finally! Found this script that works like a charm: http://marc-abramowitz.com/archive... - Carlos Granier-Phelps
i HATE this about macs. i usually adjust my screen resolution up/down until i can drag them, but it should be automatic - @baratunde from twhirl
Strange, I can usually fix this just by dragging windows in Spaces (without Expose) - Jason Wehmhoener
I thought I was the only one who had this problem. Thanks for the link Carlos! - Hubert Lotilla
On the subject of multiple monitors then. Sometimes when i wake my macbook up, i get no picture on the computer itself, my dock and open windows have all shifted over to the other monitor. Have to unplug, wait for it all to come back up, then plug back in again. Common problem? - Simon Wicks

CrunchGear » Archive » MacBook “no button” trackpads not registering clicks
"A tip came in this weekend from someone with a fleet of new MacBooks. His complaint? Every 50 or so clicks and the trackpad freezes for 5 to 10 clicks and then wakes back up. The tipster writes: So we’ve bought about 10 of them, all of them have awful problems recognizing clicks. The trackpad has a bug where it does not click about 60% of the time." - Chris Chua from Bookmarklet
don´t have this problem at all - love my new MB!!!! - Dieter Schwarz
Me neither. Trackpad working fine. - ronin
I'm thinking of replacing my old reliable 12" PowerBook with the new MacBook but the trackpad does concern me. I've played around with the demo MacBook at a nearby Mac store and I think I can get used to the buttonless trackpad easily. Should I wait for the second generation MacBook or should I just jump right in? - Hubert Lotilla
Zee.
how do you clean your mac? (whichever one it may be)
I use some cleaning stuff i bought from the Apple Store to clean my iBook and Macbook. Their the only two which get cleaned :) - I dont remember what its called though, comes with a little spray and a cloth. - Simon Wicks
If thats the clean you meant.. - Simon Wicks
yeah, that's what i meant :) I need to make more of an effort scrubbing my MBP up... Can you get the hand prints off of your macbook ok? - Zee.
Clean? - Fleagle
yeah, like make it look new again - Zee.
i have iKlear which is non-ammonia and non-alcohol. you don't want those sort of things on the finish nor on the screen. - Glenn Batuyong from twhirl
I tend to use a bluetooth keyboard more than i do the one on the Macbook itself, doesnt often come off its stand and onto my lap. But when it does it is like i havn't washed for a week and the palm rests go dark. Some gentle scrubbing gets almost all the marks off it though. Would assume you dont really get that problem with the MBP's, nor the new MacBooks. Its keeping the screen clean i care more about, thats a sucker for dust. - Simon Wicks
iKlear is the best. - Spencer
Mine never gets dirty. - LogEx
windex! (black macbook) - Zach Landes
mr clean magic eraser for the console/keyboard: http://www.mrclean.com/en_US... - Cee Bee
iKlear - matiasjajaja
Well, recently the button on my MacBook was sticking. Thinking it was broken, I took it to the Genius at the Apple Store, and he used a can of compressed air. He also cleaned my keyboard out and wiped down the screen. - Ryan Twomey
I don't clean it yet but I usually cover my iMac with this Pepsi beach blanket - Outsanity
I Klear and the Blue Cloth for the MCP and I used it for the Powerbook ,,, highly recommend - johnpiercy
I rarely clean my Mac but if ever I do I just use a damp clean cotton cloth. Just to be safe, I'd unplug the Mac and take the battery out before doing my cleaning. - Hubert Lotilla

"The people you add on FriendFeed tend to reflect your interests." -Bret Taylor #sdforum
Very true - Deepak Singh
Isn't that (for the most part) the point of FF? - Justin Korn
I choose subscriptions based on a core-perimeter model. The core are people whose interests I know overlap with my own. But I also try to have a strong perimeter - very high quality information sources across a wide variety of areas. So I read blogs by people like Robin Hanson (economist), Terry Tao (mathematician), Ethan Zuckerman (developing world), etc. Unfortunately, FriendFeed usage still seem to be mostly concentrated in a few areas. - Michael Nielsen
Michael, it will get more interesting over time. Waiting for the synthesizer geeks to show up :) - Deepak Singh
Michael, that is one of the best comments I've seen on FF. - David Gutelius
This is true with most things in life. Your real friends, the sites you visit, etc. Why is this so shocking? Just saying... :P - James Mowery from twhirl
it's not shocking... It's justa useful quote that sums up the service... ;) - Chris Messina
I know, but, it could be applied to every social network: Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and YouTube. Even forums and such. I'm sure the Bret guy is smart, but I mean... yeah. - James Mowery from twhirl
Yeah, I'm being really picky about what I read on FriendFeed. Trying to master the "hide" functionality like so many have suggested to filter out the not-so-useful stuff. :D - James Mowery from twhirl
Thanks, David! - Michael Nielsen
Couldn't agree more. I just added a bunch of gluten free people cause I have celiacs and then the usual band of geeks. - Ryan Cates
I'm just going to subscribe to Michael so I won't have to work so hard to track those people down. - Todd McKinney
and would even be more interesting if FF helped me discover more folks who werent like m, but were still interesting. - dave mcclure
But I'm filtering out the social news stuff, for the most part. - Tamar Weinberg
+1 Dave McClure... we need categories of interests badly! so we can filter content and subscribe accordingly; plus rooms would also be associated with said categories... (I already submitted a feature request for this) - Susan Beebe
the funny thing is that FriendFeed wouldn't work for me if it was my actual circle of friends. they like stuff that I have no interest in. - Jamie
Jamie: Funny but true for me too. I really like Susan's suggestion for finding cool new things and interesting people via categories. That would open the door for a StumbleUpon-like function for FF. - David Muir
I agree. And thats a good thing..right? Every day when I come to FF it works like "Google News" for me :) - Saad Kamal
It's exactly what u said . ... The more popular ur friends are , The more famous u are - saee:Dsharif
Obviously the content I choose to see - I am interested in. However and this is not just semantics what I am "interested in" at a particular moment and my more permanent "interests" are NOT necessarily the same things. And for me a core benefit of social networks is discovery. For that reason I would say, no, the people I follow do not tend to reflect my interests all the time. - John Samuelson
I think that would be the main reason why you would add people on FriendFeed although it is not the only reason. You could add friends (who are not on FF) by making them "imaginary friends" just so that you could keep tabs on them. - Hubert Lotilla
@Hubert turns out whoisi.com approximates the imaginary friend feature rather well... - Chris Messina

How much sleep do you *really* need? - http://url.im/qfaht4
Whew! I have been trying to cut sleep back to 6 hours. I guess 6.5 hours is good. I'm at the point 8 hours feels like sleeping in. - Stephan Miller
A lot more than I *admit* I need. - Robin Cannon from twhirl
you shouldn't taunt the parent of an 8 month old with those sorts of questions. - Sam Harrelson from twhirl
you are going to need a lot to deal with Amanda Chapel http://twitter.com/amandac... - Noah David Simon
the bigger question should not be how much you need, but how often do you actually get it? but after this article, I think that I'm going to try and cut back a bit - nick carrasco
It depends on your age to some degree. But I need a minimum of 7 hours. - Michael Tefft
t one day or several days in a row. Agree with Nick Carrasco also. people who think they get what they "need" may work a heck of lot better if they got an hour, but just haven't done that in so long... - Kate Brodock from twhirl
6 is perfect for me. But it also depends on the quality of the sleep - Martin Liechti
Having 7 hours for me would be great but normally I just get 6 hours of sleep. A quick 15 minute nap after lunch also is very helpful. - Hubert Lotilla
One need only check our FriendFeed profile pages to determine our sleep patterns. - Louis Gray
I like to get 8 when I can but usually run well on just under 7. Consistent 6s and I wind up being less efficient. - AJ Kohn
It depends on what you mean by "need". I had 2h/day for 3 months (google "polyphasic sleep") and, uhm.. I'm still quite alive. - xekc
I feel like I need about 12 hours but lately I am lucky if I get five, the youngest is two and she wakes up at crazy times wanting to go and watch Mickey Mouse downstairs! - Joe Dawson
Scoble can't possibly sleep more than 2 hours ... or he's got a new PA. Only a matter of weeks before Louis starts sleeping in much more unusual patterns :) - Charlie Anzman
@Joe: I have an early riser myself. My daughter (3 1/2) is up at about 6am every morning. I tell ya, there's such a difference in waking up myself to being awakened by her calling. Even if it's by 10 minutes. - AJ Kohn
It's usually 7 to 8 for me. - Winston Teo
@AJ Agreed, I actually prefer my alarm tone now than the 'downstairs now, downstairs now, downstairs now...' that starts at 5AM Haha! - Joe Dawson
5-6 and i'm set to go. was kinda hoping the article was going to talk about sleep and productivity, not sleep and death... - Jeremy Toeman
The most i've pushed myself is two hours of sleep each day for seven days in a row. But that was in College, adrenaline and caffeine concentrations were high... and i was a zombie by the end of the week. Realistically, I need a minimum of 5 on the average now, and am REALLY happy if I get 7. I guess if you sleep more you live longer but you are eventually spending that extra time only sleeping :P - Parth Awasthi
Having a child and a puppy has taught me exactly how much sleep I need to function vs how much sleep I need to feel human. It's about 4 hours for the former and 7 for the latter. - Sandie Law
6 to 7 is good for me, I would have do agree with Stephan Miller with the 8 hours is sleeping in - Jason from twhirl
My body is used to 7. No more, no less. On the weekends I'll stay in bed an extra hour, but I'll watch podcasts or the TV. - Mike Lewis from twhirl
as a consistent minimum, i can do with 6. but i really need 8 - Kingsley Joseph from twhirl
The episode of 60 minutes when they cover sleep is great, namely, it's like being drunk, you have little awareness how it's affecting you if you don't have enough. - anna sauce
good article on boingboing today: http://www.boingboing.net/2008... - Jeremy Toeman
8 hours - anything less means I'm sleeping in on Saturdays! - Sarah Perez
6 hrs is what I typically get; need 8 ... bummer - Susan Beebe
i sleep 6-7 during the week, add another hour or two during the weekend - Josiah Lau from twhirl
6-7 here. I never use an alarm. Just happens. - David Risley
At least 8-9 hours every day! Usually wake up between 1 and 4 pm!! - Siddharth Deb
I need almost exactly 7 hours. More or less and I don't feel right after a few days. - gfurry
Depends..I feel like I don't need to sleep however. it catches up. I wish was like Churchhill - Laurent Courtines from twhirl
Right now I'm sleeping between 4.5 and 5 hours a day, and I still don't feel the need to sleep when I get back from work. In the weekends I sleep 7 or 8 hours. - Alejandro

With iPhone 2.0 software not available until early July, I'm guessing the 3G iPhone won't be ready until then, either. Disappointed?
July 11th, right? - Kreg Steppe
Someone didn't watch the keynote... tsk tsk. - Bwana ☠
At least you'll have it in July. Our local carrier already announced that they'll have it late this year! - Hubert Lotilla
Just read 2.0 could be headed to devices as early as June 27th. Dunno if that is true... - Kreg Steppe from twhirl

is bottled water better or worse than tap water? http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display...
bottle is better if you trust your local company - Charles Alden
bottled water is sometimes just imported tap water from a faraway town though! - Prolific Programmer
bottled is worse because it comes in a plastic bottle which winds up in the Ocean at some point. Tap water and a glass people. - Adam Turetzky from twhirl
+1 Adam - Trent Olson
Not only is bottled water increasing plastic usage, there's also it being transported on trucks or trains. - Rishabh Mishra (p248)
depends on the location, ditto hdiwan - clarke thomas
Bottled water is a waste of resources. Sorry. - Morton Fox
30 cl bottles are the proof of that Morton, you pay 4 times, for 1 lit. and there's so much plastic to recycle... thus you actually buy plastic - directeur
We use a 2 gal. Brita filter and Dallas Municipal Tap. I fill a 1 liter nalgene bottle every morning and take it to work. (I take it to church, too, but I don't take it into the sanctuary) I buy bottled water when I have no other choice. - ha3rvey (looking busy)
I trust the tap water, since I already trust many things too... - directeur
I prefer bottled water. - Chris Rossini
I suppose I might replace my nalgene bottle if the BPA scare pans out. sheesh - ha3rvey (looking busy)
Tap water is unsafe in our city that is why there is a lot of "water refilling stations" within the metropolis. These stations have multi-stage water treatment facilities that produce bottled water and are sold in containers ranging from 500ml up to 5 gallons. You can bring your own container and they will fill it up after they have cleaned it and deemed it hygienic. - Hubert Lotilla
Depends but basically identical. I'm cheap so I prefer tap. - Jason Menayan
I'm fortunate enough to live in a first world country where tap water is safe to drink. The amount of water being shipped around first world countries in little bottles, when a child dies every 15 to 25 seconds (depending which stat you read) due to a lack of access to clean safe water is disgusting. - Mat
Mat, interesting comment. Tap water is completely safe and drinkable here in Australia, but when I was last in the Valley, the tap water in Atherton was awful to the point I had no choice other than to drink bottled water. I guess some places are different to others - Duncan Riley
in 3rd Wrld countries it's the only option, but not always safe. In US no need, but I like mineral water, not plain. - clarke thomas
Duncan, crappy tap water here is sometimes blamed on a conspiracy by Brita, the water filter owned by Clorox. :) - Jason Menayan

More important feature to you: 3G or GPS?
Actually neither of those does it for me. I'm hoping for a more svelte form factor with native chat and video support. - LogEx
Out of those two, I'd choose 3G - Bwana ☠
@logical - i'm hoping for chat and video as well. even if those leaked pics are false, i hope they capture the spirit of what's coming - MG Siegler
3G definately! - Paul
I'd choose 3G between the two because GPS maps for Manila need to be constantly updated. - Hubert Lotilla
VIdeo, MMS and 32GB (at least). Then I might upgrade - Gez
both would be nice. - maique
Is it too much to ask for both? ;) - AJ Batac
@AJ - hopefully not :) - MG Siegler
Both are nice, but the App store is the most important to me. Also the prospect of a much cheaper, smaller, 2.5G iPhone for the everyperson. That's gonna be huge for the iPhone market. - Kevin Fox
@kevin - i'm with you on the app store. it will be the gift that keeps on giving. - MG Siegler
Definitely 3G. GPS would be nice but the iPhone almost needs 3G for more advanced features. GPS can be faked better and better over time. - Brandon Titus
3.5G HSDPA - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
3G definitely - Sally Church
3G, with decent triangulation of location from towers and WiFi signals. Rosum TV-GPS would also help, but I don't think the iPhone's new radio chipset can do it. - Garth Roxburgh-Kidd
HSDPA by a long shot. - Jamie
3G for sure. - Charles Hudson
Definately 3G. That's like asking, Internet Connection or Satellite TV? - Mohamed J
3g and a snap-on bluetooth QWERTY keyboard - Christian Anderson
I need them both - Stelios Kiousis
3G for me, don't really use GPS! - Joe Dawson
As a Swede, I demand 3G before iPhone becomes interesting. My thought. - Niklas Svensson
yeah neither - matthew
3G for sure. That's why I've kept my Blackjack. I'd rather have a Bluetooth GPS instead of built in. - Larry
for any other phone I wouldn't care if it has 3g or GPS but thinking about possibilities in iPhone 3g and GPS will complete each other - ahmet bulent
It needs to have both for me to be interested. I've come to rely on both way too heavily to buy a phone without one of them. - Bob
MG Siegler
A little test, but also a good discussion. Are you going to buy a 3G iPhone?
I can't afford it at the moment, but if I could, I probably would. For now, I'll be content with my iPhone with the new firmware - Bwana ☠
What about if it's $199 as a lot of rumors suggest Bwana? Does that change your mind? - MG Siegler
If it is $200, it is sooooo tempting. I am sure my wife would kill me, though, unless it had features beyond "faster internet." I am very excited to see what those features are. - Bret Taylor
Doesn't change my wallet :) If it's $199, my situation won't change, but I bet it will for a lot of other people. - Bwana ☠
Me too Bret. What about if it's a smaller version of the phone for $199? Do people want an iPhone Nano? - MG Siegler
no matter the price or the release date I'm having it, it's just that I'll have to wait 'till August to see it live - Dobromir Hadzhiev
I already have a hard enough time typing on the current size, so I don't personally want it. It fits in my pocket better than any of my previous phones already because it is so thin. - Bret Taylor
Right now... I can't think of an iPhone Nano being as useful... but since Apple continuously smashes my expectations... there's a possibility! - Ross Miller
@bret - i agree with that 100% @dobromir - why August, where do you live? - MG Siegler
It's a toss-up for me; if it's $199 and the featureset continues to be compelling, it's a good case. But then I have to figure out how to get out of my Verizon contract, and not to mention, Verizon has far better coverage in upstate New York than AT&T. - Mark Trapp
@mark - yeah i switched from verizon to AT&T last year for the iPhone, overall i haven't had problems, but I'm in California -- and luckily my contract with verizon was over. - MG Siegler
How is the voice quality with AT&T and the iPhone in California? Around here, it's a running joke: "hey*hiss*how's*crackle*it going?" I was never too sure if it was the network, the coverage in New York, or the phones AT&T offered. - Mark Trapp
I'm in Bulgaria, I doubt it makes it here, before my buddies from US come back home around late August - Dobromir Hadzhiev
@mark - seems fine to me, i vaguely remember verizon being a bit better, but it's been a while. - MG Siegler
I am actually very interested in the (still rumored) Red version. Either way, I will be picking one up... I've waited this long... - Neil
Not in the first few months that it is released. Even though the iPhone will be available thru a local carrier (since they've already signed a contract with Apple) I don't foresee the immediate availability of the item. My guess is that they'll be selling the iPhone here by mid-October or early November to coincide with the Christmas season. Sure, you can get an unlocked version off the black market but I'll be sticking with the legit version. Oh, and by the way, I'm in Manila. - Hubert Lotilla
@hubert - yeah "by the end of the year" is the phrase used for a lot of the markets around the world - MG Siegler
Heck ya. - Steve Rubel
I'm leaning more toward yes than in the past. Was holding out for an Android phone, but the delay and need for access everywhere is drivig me toward yes. - Mike Reynolds
Yes - didn't buy the first generation on purpose. And my wife has been holding out on buying a new phone for herself because she wants one as well - every other phone looks rather boring to her. - Frederic
Yes, yes, yes. My first iPhone too. - Ben Parr
On an semi-related note, the first generation iPhone has definitely been a uniquely good experience for me for a first generation electronics product. Everything I've bought the 1G of (a car in its first year, a laptop in its first year) had so many problems I regretted it. I love my iPhone, and it works better than any phone I have had. That is impressive to me, particularly as someone who has built so many buggy 1G products ;) - Bret Taylor
1G buggy products? FriendFeed must be 2G then! </flattery> - Bwana ☠
yes, i will. i have been waiting for version 2.0, still happy with mu current phone, but the iphone will be bought as soon as i can. if it gets to portugal before a friend returns from the states, i'll get it here. if he arrives first, he will buy it for me... - maique
If it was already available here in Canada, hell yeah. - AJ Batac
I pretty much have to since I lost my old iPhone :( - Brandon Titus
If it has the Video phone call action, I will be getting TWO! - Josh
Most likely. Especially if it is subsidized. - Jeremy Franklin
@josh - so many people seem like they're on the verge of getting two for a number of reasons. i am still waiting for someone to say they're getting three. - MG Siegler
Well, I've deliberately waited for the 3G version, my Blackberry is on it's last legs and the current plan has finished so it would be very tempting, yeah. - Sally Church
Yes, the first chance I get. - Garth Roxburgh-Kidd
neh. still happy with my iPhone v1. (he says confidently, prior to seeing the new one) - Anthony Citrano
yes, immediately - Noah Carter
Depends on what else is announced - but likely to upgrade immediately if it's practical. - Robin Barooah
Is the pope a catholic!!!! - Ed Dale
At $199 it is basically a free upgrade for existing iPhone owners because you can sell your old phone unlocked for more than that. - Nicholas Molnar

this story about uncontacted indian tribes in brazil is like a StarTrek Episode or something http://www.mahalo.com/Unconta...
I think they're holding on to the recipe for the BEST chocolate in the world, and are not letting us get it... - Iain Baker
After reading the articles regarding these tribes I am reminded of the Tasaday. They were a tribe living in the Philippines. Originally presented as a stone age tribe but later on revealed as a hoax. The truth though is more complex and is well presented in this article: http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/hoax... - Hubert Lotilla
Yeah, and doesn't flying an airplane over a tribal village that has never seen 21st centry technology violate the prime directive? - Ray Grieselhuber
I'd imagine it's safe to assume they've seen planes flying overhead before. With the amount of planes in the sky, it'd be hard for them to have never seen one. - Bob
