So "liking" this would be really ironic, no? - Chris Baskind
what would be ironic is if you liked this and the dozens of items below it - Julian Baldwin
The really, really, really awesome part about Friendfeed is that there are dozens of ways to use it. Not everyone is using Friendfeed to replace twitter as a bandstand to opine about social media. - Mark Trapp
Your point is well taken, though. Handing out likes to run up your stats or get attention runs counter to FF's potential as a smart content filter. - Chris Baskind
I can't resist good irony. (Pointedly, however, I agree. Though if it's ONLY media, it's still instructive ... We just need a Jaanix-like feature extractor to figure out which people we most agree in likes with. Then if someone who likes every bit of media on FF and, say, me, who only likes a few wouldn't be too tightly considered for mutual recommendation.) - Alexander Williams
Hey Alexander, Hutch Carpenter started a movement to figure that out, called the likes compatibility index. Check it out here: http://friendfeed.com/e/f41a03... Lots of interesting analyses generated off of it from Yuvi, too. - Mark Trapp
@alexander I think the new Digg recommendation system does exactly what you're desiring and could be applied to FF in simpler terms - Julian Baldwin
Sorry, I'll try to calm down! - J. Phil
There are lots of systems which are trying to use expressed preferences, keywords and/or tags to try and figure out recommendation dynamics. I'm for it! I just mentioned Jaanix as the one I use most often. I think we'll see them moving into a lot of other spaces because they "just work." No need to give them lists of keywords, or people, or anything except say, "Yup" or "no," which is about the level of interaction I like. - Alexander Williams
@j. phil you're fine, it's certain others who may as well be unconscious at the mouse from time to time and I lose respect for their credibility until they wake up - Julian Baldwin
We could classify this as a pathetic liker ? Please coin the term for my list! http://friendfeed.com/e/a44805... - Mike Fruchter
Better yet a "Drive by liker" - Mike Fruchter
I like the way you phrased the statement here.. so when people say "there is no wrong way to use friendfeed" you can say "I'm not saying you are using friendfeed wrong, I'm saying you aren't worth watching" ... I like it! - J. Phil
@mike lol, you've coined this one correctly @j. phil exactly - Julian Baldwin
but what if we really like a lot of stuff? ;) - Sarah Perez
Afraid to either like or comment now... - Cyndy
@sarah that happens to all of us, but sometimes you know damn well someone is only hitting like to appear present - Julian Baldwin
That kind of defeats the purpose of the "like" link, doesn't it? - Lucretia Pruitt
@lucretia yes, liking everything on the screen defeats the purpose - Julian Baldwin
I would really like 1-5 star type liking. Also, perhaps a "private-like" which allows me to save stuff for my own viewing without contaminating the main feed. If FriendFeed would add "themed"/keyword liking, then it would be easy to exclude topics/pics/songs/videos you weren't interested in... It would be really nice to see FriendFeed with/without the tech articles... Some people like RAPatton have only subscribed to 20 people, but are very active. - Mitchell Tsai
Julian's just mad because I "liked" this: http://friendfeed.com/e/204d08... - Mark Trapp
P.S. If you see the speed of the Everyone feed, no one here even likes 1% of the media which flows into FriendFeed. I doubt that Polly, RAPatton, and I combined are even tapping 0.1% of the incoming picture flow... - Mitchell Tsai
haha, I'm happy you like that! I wouldn't be happy if you liked that and ALL items before it - Julian Baldwin
LOL. Space Camp Barbie... - Mitchell Tsai
I 'liked' this but not for ironies sake. Well said Julian. - Steve Spalding
I suppose it depends, if it's a prolific news day there can be a lot going on. I am kidding, liking a story for the sake of it has no benefit. I post more than I like as it adds more and shows that you are reading and participating!! - Joe Dawson
he is right. - DSaad69
I'll never dictate to someone how they should use a service. If I don't like it, I'll unsubscribe / unfriend / unfollow. - Shey
Maybe they "like" a lot of things so they can find them later. - Corie Allison
In many ways, I agree. Liking a post for the sake of some perceived payoff in karma/stature/etc is damn fools game. - Kevin Donahue
@ Corie, that's exactly what I do if i'm in the office and don't have enough time to comment, or read the story at that time. I can catch up later. Keeping those stories as "liked" means i can also easily locate them when showing them to friends... - Iain Baker
I wonder what would change if there was a "mark" or "note" button, too. Sometimes I "like" things just to refer back to them later. - Harvey Simmons
if you're a Firefox user and want to mark or note something to refer back to later - http://ffapps.com/readlater/ - Julian Baldwin
true. Harvey: exactly, I would like that "read later" functionality, too (hey btw, how about liking comments, like on YouTube?) - Gaby Benkwitz

Can some young person explain the appeal? I'm just not getting it. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Yikes. @Mark it's semi-funny... um no I give up, I can't explain it - Brian Carter via NoiseRiver
Is it that much different than an episode of the Ninja? Similar editing style. Jokes and content are just written to appeal to a younger demographic. I actually thought it was pretty funny. Of course when my kids were young I used to watch Pee-Wee's Playhouse and thought he was funny and inventive. I did children's magic shows for years. You have to think like a kid to get them to laugh. As my wife is fond of telling me, I never advanced past 7 mentally. - Kevin Shannon
There's a huge difference between Fred and Ninja: I can stand Ninja's voice for more than 30 seconds. That's the hugely distracting thing about Fred I can't understand. It's just beyond me, and it's hard for me to understand other people liking it, I guess. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
@Mark Did you like Pee-Wee Herman? I can understand people getting annoyed at Fred. My 18 YO daughter just came in and I asked her if she ever saw Fred videos. She went crazy about how much she loves them. Told me to look up the valentine one. She then pointed out this video which is popular with her college friends (I promise it's not Fred and it's not as annoying.... and it's not a Rick Roll) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... Just an idea of what 18 YO's think is funny. - Kevin Shannon
This is a take on the Valley Girl ridicule gag, just mutated since today age 6 is the new 13; throw in the "ADHD: medical problem or just crappy parenting" backdrop, Alvin & the Chipmunks vocals (the 'banana peal' of sound effects), and classic cartoon telegraphing, and what you get is "Fred": Merlin Mann's nephew with whom he competes for attention at every required attendance family gathering. - Micah Wittman

I think so. Taking conversations private is a great way to further a business relationship. A DM on Twitter is often a much better communication method than a public posting - Jim Duncan via Alert Thingy
I think that would be great, I use DM frequently and would love it on FF :-) - Maria Reyes-McDavis via twhirl
That would be supercool. - Brian Carter
I'll be the dissenting voice and argue that we don't need yet another walled messaging system. Is something wrong with existing systems? Why not something open and interoperable. E-mail, anyone? - Aaron B. Hockley
Greasemonkey has a firefox script that allows you to tweet from inside ff. Here: http://internetducttape.com/20... - Jay Tannenbaum
I'm all for it. - Chris Rossini
Perhaps use what's already there - some kind of ad-hoc private room that exists for the duration of the conversation. - Colin Walker via fftogo
FriendFeed already allows you to add a google talk account, though I'm not sure what updates it shows (maybe status?). Rather than building another messaging system, what about allowing adding other IM services and having FriendFeed provide a gateway to directly contact someone on whatever their preferred service is? (Users would probably have to prioritize their accounts, and there would be some need for the reverse path to be traversed but those could be dealt with...) - Andy Tinkham via twhirl
Yes, so people joining my feed and I can message each other, and so we don't have to toggle back and forth between FriendFeed discussions and other socnets to send private msgs. If FriendFeed just added private messages and a profile feature, it would be really helpful and would keep people here. That may be one reason why some people don't like FF. Being able to add a photo to profile would be good, too. - Cathryn Hrudicka
I would prefer a profile where I could post e-mail and instant messaging addresses. I do not want FriendFeed to become yet another inbox to check. - Robert Seidman
I also dont need another inbox added on top of all the others. - Andru Edwards
YES!! But perhaps to speak to Andru's concern we could have an "on/off" option that would tell other users "Andru does not accept private messages" or something along those lines. - melmcbride
Why not a profile where you can say how you want to be contacted? An internal message via FriendFeed could be one option, for those young'uns that don't use email. - possible248
I am with Andru, I don't need another inbox to keep up with. - brian junyor
definitely don't need another inbox. something over xmpp would be lovely so that I can just route it to Google Talk - Jamie
no featuritis pls - Wolfgang Luenenbuerger via twhirl
The solution is very easy. Hook up XMPP to Google Talk so we can have instant messaging. Hook up email to Gmail so we can all message each other with a robust messaging system. Please do NOT add another lame messaging service like the one that Facebook and Twitter have. Thank you! - Robert Scoble
Definitely. - Matthew Vaughan
I use google chatback quite heavily across my blogs, and it's great: plus, it takes your status updates from gmail, so you can choose when you'd like to interact with others - if this sort of app was on FF, I'd certainly use it - Iain Baker
I agree with Scoble. No bacn. Give me ham via IM. - Steve Rubel

First comes IM support, then we'll want to use to read email, then we'll be considering as a replacement for emacs... - Kevin Johnson
NO THANK YOU...unless there's an option to turn it off. - Mona N
I agree with Scoble as well. I have completely disabled the Facebook chat and would probably to the same with FF. A connection to Google Talk is the way to go... - Justin Korn
I think you should be able to do @ responses to Rooms only, not on main posts - Justin
Oh yes, that would be great! - Mirko Zorz
Yes, a direct message API would really help me move my fledgling Twitter app. - Andy Murdoch
I'll join the chorus and say yes to DM to gmail, gtalk or within Twhirl. I don't always use the web interface. - Larry Kless
No inbox in FF! However, easy solution is just show my e-mail for my friends. After that we will talk as usual. - Бозон Хиггса
Yes! Some people on FF don't connect a Twitter account or any e-mail. I rather not "comment on some random item in the feed" when sending them a message. - Mitchell Tsai
Yes 100% - Mike Fruchter
That would be nice, but moderated use of it is advised... say, if this is implemented along with a block feature... Plus I do not want to have sevral email boxes to check, one is already too much :) - directeur via NoiseRiver
I would like to see a messaging system - doesn't have to be private. Maybe just a Twitter like timeline on the right side of the screen would do. It would have to be separate from the rest of my feed - otherwise the time line would get thrown off. - Frederic
Before a DM-System, it's more important to have SMS and IM. I don't see a big point for DM. There is a solution called E-Mail for that ;) - Ryo
Absolutely - Christian Burns
Never missed not having one, so no - Deepak
How about a simple "E-mail this member" form? So if someone on FriendFeed wants to drop me a note AND I have not disabled the "Allow members to e-mail me," I'll receive that person's note in my (regular!) e-mail box and can choose to reply or not reply. - Adam Lasnik
ooo... or on a related note, FriendFeed could have two e-mail addresses... one private (for us mailing stuff to our feeds) and one public (for forwarding mail to our registered address), e.g., thatadamguy-rhq4h@friendfeed.com, with the latter part being there (and changeable) to prevent FriendFeed dictionary spamming. - Adam Lasnik

On the Web, If You're Not Growing, You're Dying [Louis Gray - 6/30/08]
June 30 at 3:56 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Using Google Trends, you can see the near-death of older Web 1.0 brands, like Netscape, Lycos and Alta Vista, the plateauing of early Web 2.0 brands, like MySpace, and the deflating balloon of weakened brands, such as Technorati, Digg and Microsoft." - Mitchell Tsai via Bookmarklet
A little more than a week ago, Google Trends made news by introducing the ability to track data on Web sites, but the service's core element helps shed some light on the fact that the interest level in Technorati has been slashed in half in just the last 12 months, that MySpace peaked a year ago, as did Digg. - Mitchell Tsai
...I sold my MSFT stock around 1999 for 100 (some friends sold at 110-120). In 9 years, it hasn't recovered. Good thing I didn't take a full-time job with them in 1998. :-( Nice observations Louis! - Mitchell Tsai

Ah the million dollar question - I think context based advertising is the most likely monetization strategy - Brian Sullivan
Pro accounts to get rid of the limits? That worked for Flickr (Or did it?)... - Yuvi
Yeah, I would have no problem with Pro accounts (not sure what functionality would be limited, number of rooms? number of friends?). Nor would I have any beef with injecting text ads into the river - as long as they flow down the page, not pinned to the top. I wouldn't have problems with banner ads either, outside the main content area. - felix
I think that you will see a continuos process of standardization in the whole realm of "social networking" and "aggregation" (data portability) and that it will become in the end a standard service of the internet, like i.e. email or ftp some time. At this point MySpace, Facebook and even FF will prolly not die, but maybe become providers for this networking service, like Gmail and Hotmail are providers for email today. And then - same monetizing as usual :) - Sebastian Küpers
@Yuvi: flickr is getting only 3% (TBV) of the money back from premium...wouldn't call this "worked"... - Luigi Centenaro
I would go for sponsored rooms and in a softer than facebook beacon model... - Luigi Centenaro
There is definitely an opportunity for partners and sponsors to do some engaging activities in FF Rooms. The Rooms feature are a great staring points for virtual communities within FF for users (and potential customers for partners/sponsors) with specific interests. - tekspectator
@Luigi: Yes, I was wondering the same thing. 25$ a year isn't goanna keep something as big as flickr running... - Yuvi
Paid access to additional privileges. Things like a profile bio, perhaps a directory of users or a directory of FriendFeed Rooms. Things pro users would be interested in. - David Risley
Current 11 Page Limit/Lowered Like/Comment Limits for Non-Pro folks? - Yuvi
Getting theend users to pay for what is essentially a communications service I believe is not something that the masses will open their wallets to. The service has to appear to the end user to be "free", either subsidized by partners/sponsors engagements or user action/context based ads (even though Fb Beacon doesn't seem to take off). - tekspectator
Ads from aggregated content? Think of FriendFeed as a scraper that scrapes content with creators' permission. ;) - Mike Abundo
@pixelsebi sound like a reasonable assessment. Google Connect in someways provides that layer of social features. The interesting part is how they (in theory) can harvest attention data coupled with context of virtual communities with special interests. A bunch of e-gaming companies are already doing just that with larger poker communities for instance for customer retention. - tekspectator
Perhaps offering the service to be used within a corporation (customize it) and charge for it. Bring Social Media within an organization? - tanya
anyway a service should be premium on functionalities that give some sort of return (reputation, money, business, etc)...not stressing the "early adopters" with a fee... - Luigi Centenaro
I would think contextual advertising but I've heard that's not the case. Perhaps data mining for ORM purposes? - andy brudtkuhl
Since FF doesn't have some other business, there's no potential for indirect benefits here, unless some other company acquires them. So, I'm guessing the strategy is either advertising or acquisition (or none at all, but these folks seem too smart for that). - Jason Wehmhoener
