Inside the Google phone: A 'snappy' chip - http://digg.com/gadgets...
"Google has not restricted Bluetooth and is certainly leaves anything related to the OS to be free for the public including phone functionality such as Camera. They do have one restriction around Google's closed-source apps like Google Maps, Google Talk and Gmail. In essence it is very much like a mini computer and USB stick." - Ian Cleasby

"NQ has confirmed that it will be bringing a Twitter phone to market for Christmas this year, after the success of its first effort. The Facebook phone, or INQ1, had tight integration with the biggest social network, and the next effort (unconfirmed as the INQ2) will have Twitter support baked in the case. It is reported this low cost handset, which only cost £80 the 3 network, managed to shift 700,000 units, and is still apparently wandering out the shops at a pretty impressive rate. Frank Meehan, CEO of INQ, said "This can really help open up and drive Twitter use on mobile when usage becomes part of your data package like on the PC." - sofarsoShawn from Bookmarklet
"Twitter play He had previously stated that the next iteration of its handset models would likely contain some kind of Twitter support, at the event the company hosted back in February. Meehan also hinted that the next device would possibly have a full QWERTY keyboard as well, which would be great for quick Tweets, although 140 characters isn't that hard to tap out on a normal keypad.... more... - sofarsoShawn

anyone else secretly hope google buys Friendfeed? (update: this is from October 11th, someone has bumped it up - which is cool...and i still feel the same.)
No. - Mo Kargas
No! :o - Jemm
No I like it the way it is. - orionstarr
NO! - Mona Nomura
god forbid no - Dobromir Hadzhiev
I'd love it...just the security in knowing a heavyweight is behind the service (especially through the hard times ahead) and let's face it -they have got skills when it comes to bringing companies together (Facebook aside). And fingers crossed, it will push Friendfeed towards a more mainstream audience, ie. growth. - Zee.
Nay. - Mona Nomura
come on now, aside from Friendfeed management there must be a few of you on my side with this :) - Zee.
anyone who once liked jaiku knows why this should never happen - Dobromir Hadzhiev
------ * Ads by Google * ------- - Jemm
Jailu was close to dead before google took over - imo. Plus, Ive been a member for ages and thd community & features on FF are far superior. - Zee.
@Jemm, funny but ads are coming anyway. And google definitely has the least intrusive advertising out there. - Zee.
jaiku is miles behind friendfeed, but was better than twitter - Dobromir Hadzhiev
@Zee: Yeah, I'm sure here will be ads someday. Or maybe they (FF) make us addicted and then require membership fee to continue ;) - Jemm
Being bought by Google doesn't automatically confer greatness nor service quality - Mo Kargas
You don't think the Googlers would try to take over what the ex-Googlers are doing? IMHO, the FF dev teams are already heavyweights, not because of their names. The site keeps on improving with hardly any downtime, and they're taking time to think things through to actually developing a site that is far superior than a lot of the other sites and service. (both front and back end) - Mona Nomura
Depends what u mean by greatness and service quality - Zee.
I wouldn't mind. - Roberto Bonini
@Mona - no doubt. Bret, Paul & the rest of the team have & are doing an incredible job but times are going to get harder...that's for certain and more often than not heavyweights survive over the smaller guys during these times. And in comparing friendfeed vs google, as superb the FF team are - there are few (if any) company you can compare to the likes of google at the mo - Zee.
Is that assuming FF founders want to join Google? I am assuming they left for a reason :) - Tim Hoeck
+1 Tim - definitely assuming that - Zee.
NO. I am hoping that they do great things on their own instead. Google has Jaiku and it is not doing very well. - Vijayendra (V-Mo) Mohanty
Just after reading the comments.. Do you really think it is in Google's interest to buy Friendfeed.. I don't believe it is there interest I think Google has it's head elsewhere right now? - Ian Cleasby from twhirl
I have 2 hopes for FF. 1) It stays. 2) The folks I've come to consider pals stay around as well. :) - Yolanda
Only if FF is going broke. Otherwise, NO. Besides Writely, what good has Google brought to startups? - Christopher Galtenberg
you may be right Ian but i'm not sure - I think if google are adding to their organise the worlds information...friendfeed could definitely contribute - Zee.
No. Google is a clusterfuck and their products are designed by committee. FF is obviously the lovechild of a few people with a very clear and focussed vision for it. - Nadine Schaeffer
lol, something tells me i'm not going to win this 1... - Zee.
no!! :) - Patrik Johansson

Ew, no. - Soup
Wow, a whole lot of NO's. I guess everyone wants GOOG to stay away from RTW - Jim Gaudet
RTW? Remember The Wilk? - Zee.

Hell no. They kill everything social they touch! - Jorge Escobar
not quite Jorge, i guess everything they acquire.. - Zee.
Zee, they didn't kill Android. - Cristo
@Cristo, let's wait and see... - Jorge Escobar
Jorge, the company was bought 4 years ago. How long do you plan to wait? - Cristo
Cristo, until it gets as big as FeedBurner - Jorge Escobar
no thanks... Why don't we (friendfeed users) buy it? - Alex Sauceda
@zee - RTW Real Time Web - Jim Gaudet
ah! :) - Zee.
Nope. - Louis Gray
Haha, I saw a good comment above, and it was ... mine. This is an old thread. :) - Christopher Galtenberg
friendfeed.google.com or google.com/friendfeed ? XD nay - 'Like' robot (frɐnc)
@Zee: Thanks. I still think Google would be a decent fit as Google's social networking forays so far have been duds: Reader was never intended to be the social tool Google's trying to turn it into. Google Talk's getting blown away by FB chat. Google Profiles is awkward, Blogger is a nation unto itself, and Groups is ... just there. I'm pretty sure FriendFeed already has more "social"... more... - LANjackal

The best feed reader for windows is a Chrome shortcut to Google Reader - Mitch
I thought it was until I started using Google Reader - Michael Fidler
FULL ACK @Mattie - Marcel Janus
Mattie, hmmm...other than the desktop thing, it does not keep you tied to all-knowing Google, something which a paranoid nut like me feels happy about. Perhaps, this post can probably explain it better. http://tinyurl.com/2vrjaa - JazJaz from twhirl
Please try the latest beta version for a week. - JazJaz
I stay with netvibes and/or feedly ;) - gekow
Flock Browser is far superior or if not I will agree wit Greader, Friendfeed and Twhirl :) - Ian Cleasby from twhirl
One really good reason to use a desktop reader is that some of them can monitor pages that don't have a feed and alert you to any changes. Essential feature for keeping ALL of your software up to date. Additionally, there are feeds you can't subscribe to in Google Reader, because they require authentication, and unfortunately that's not something Google Reader supports. - April Russo (app103)
I like Google reader. Period (lol) - Keshav Khera from twhirl
For the Mac: NetNewsWire http://www.newsgator.com/INDIVID... - Jay
Has anyone done a feedly vs. FeedDemon comparison? - Edwin Khodabakchian
I like Google Reader too, but I am an administrator on 3 forums and have to subscribe to feeds for the admin boards, and that requires a reader that can accept a username & pass to log me in to access the nonpublic feeds. I also like having popup notification when new posts are made on these forums, so I can quickly delete spam within 30 seconds of it being posted. - April Russo (app103)
feedly is messy. google reader has toomany limitations and is visually all screwed up. i don't understand why newsgator doesn't make an rss reader similar to netnewswire. feeddemon isn't horrible, but it could be so much better. netnewswire is probably the best i've tried and continue to use. only for mac, but the best thing is that it's free. - Cee Bee
Cee Bee: Is there a specific part of feedly you find messy? - Edwin Khodabakchian
Excuse my novice-ship, but one condition I enjoy about feedly is that it allows me to both upload to my twitter and my friendfeed accounts, almost simultaneously, and the luxury of sharing it with other g-friends. Now, if feeddemon can do all of this, I'm sold.Sold I tells ya!! - Terence
edwin -- i have over 600 subscriptions and found it a bit of a nuisance to navigate in the small space on feedly as well as view other people's shares. this goes the same for google -- it tries to fit too much into one space (notes, shares, suggestions, options, etc) whereas with a stand alone program like netnewswire, i can have all the options, settings and other gadgets for different functions not only in a separate tool bar, but menu as well leaving the dedicated rss reader to do what it does best - Cee Bee
cee bee - thanks for the feedback. I will pass that to the design team. - Edwin Khodabakchian
used to use that when I didnt have a Mac , it is a good one - johnpiercy
For those of you who don't know already, FeedDemon is the (slightly) lesser cousin of NetNewsWire. They both share the same parent - Newsgator. - JazJaz
Just started using this yesterday, and I'm convinced. I LOVE this app. - Flora from twhirl
Unfortunately I think any app has to be benchmarked against Google Reader. If not, it's nothing more than an RSS scraper. - Glenn Batuyong
have been using this when a) i had to pay for it and b) google reader did not exist. and still love it. if only for sentimental reasons .... - denise
I don't think I'll ever use a desktop RSS reader. I need my reader to be in the cloud b/c I read from 3 workstations. I love Google reader esp w/ sharing. - Keith - @tsudo
@tsudohnimh FeedDemon can synchronize feeds across multiple computers too. And you can also share items just like you do with Google Reader. Trouble is, not many people know about these features. FD can be customized to provide an uncluttered, aesthetic interface to read your feeds. - JazJaz
@JazJaz ty for the info. Does it also provide a web interface for reading feeds? - Keith - @tsudo
tsudo, FeedDemon syncs with newsgator, which on top of syncing each copy of FeedDemon with each pc you use, also syncs with their online reader at http://www.newsgator.com, also mobile at http://m.newsgator.com - Shmoe
No web version mean me no like. I don't want to keep installing apps. I want cross platform compatibility. - Ernie Oporto
@Ernie this synchronizes with google reader or newsgator - Paul Whitaker
The GReader sync feature doesn't work. I tried it and it failed. - LANjackal

What are your best new features of Safari 4 and what are the worst?
sorry to start a new thread over this Carlos, just wanted one specific thread about the topic - Zee.
Not a problem... I'm liking the tabs-at-the-top and the Top Sites page. Can't test too much. Currently at FOWA and the WiFi is zonking out. - Carlos Granier-Phelps
Definitely liking the Chrome-isms. The search results when typing into the location bar have a really nice and clean presentation. I wish the left-most tab didn't blend in to the window control widgets, though. Although I used to be a big Speed Dial user with Opera, I'm not sure I'll get much use out of the Top Sites page; I tend to just go for the Location bar when I want to bring a site up. It's a lot quicker to ⌘-T and start typing. Heck, I barely use bookmarks anymore. - Akiva Moskovitz
It does seem very quick on Windows. Will try Mac and Linux when I get home. Will be sticking to the Mac interface by choice I think, though I understand the desire to make it more native for windoze users. - Nico
Not sure if this was there before, but I like that the search box works on the current page's content as well. - Carlos Granier-Phelps
I would definitely prefer it to look like Windows on a Windows machine, personally, so that's another great feature. - Akiva Moskovitz
I like the new top sites page. It looks great and it works pretty well. As far as the worst, I would say that it still doesn't have all the options that it should have like Firefox. - Mathew™ one of a kind
I can't seem to install the 1Password browser extension. - Christopher Harley
i can't use safari to write a post on a wordpress blog...because it won't let me insert links :( Everyone else in the same boat? - Zee.
Zee, strange. I just tested it out and it's allowing me to insert links without a hitch. - Akiva Moskovitz
Not sure I like the fact that the tabs extend the width of the browser window. - Akiva Moskovitz
Ok I love that bookmarks work in an iTunes-like music library fashion, now that's pretty cool - Jennifer Van Grove
I also don't like the fact that you have to click on one part of the tab to drag it along the bar. - Mathew™ one of a kind
I love the affordances for the tear-away tabs. http://friendfeed.com/e... - Alan Le

CTRL+ page Up and down functions don't work =( It is fast though but still lacks in mutitasking - Ian Cleasby from twhirl
Like the UI, Top Sites, and Speed. 1Password extension wasn't working at first, but I went into 1Password Prefs, turned off support for Safari, shutdown 1Password (already had Safari off), then brought up 1Password and re-enabled Safari support. When I started up Safari, it was all installed properly. - Seth Greenblatt
I lasted an entire day with the new tabs. I've reverted back to the previous tab UI. It feels so much better now that my title bar acts like a title bar and my tabs bar acts like a tab bar. - Paul Grav
Best: speed; noticeably faster than FF 3.1b3 (Shiretoko) on my Macbook. Worst: no extension architecture; any time I gain from quicker pageloads would quickly get eaten up by less efficient workflows inside browser. Not worth the trade-off - Ted Louie
FF3.1b3 is scheduled to release on March 2 https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox... - LouCypher

Coming Soon: Google Chrome Extensions #pc
"Google has already indicated that it plans to offer a platform for Chrome browser extensions, but now we finally have what looks like a firm date on when that will arrive. I am sticking with Microsoft Internet Explorer always - Boo to Chrome and Firefox I dont like their interfaces - TrafficBug
Well IE exists and I for one am sticking with IE. IE has still the largest single market share out there. I never liked the interfaces of Firefox or Chrome or Safari or Opera or Maxthon or Flock or what-not. - TrafficBug
Politically, you consider yourself a "conservative" don't you? (Republican if you're in the US) - Michael Collins from twhirl
To each his own, I guess. I really love Chrome's simplicity. For the same reason, I'm of mixed emotions on this issue. On one hand, there are certain things that I would like Chrome to do, so extensions can come along that fix the problem, on the other, I REALLY don't want to clutter it up. Self-discipline, I guess. - Chieze Okoye
Also, @Michael, I think that it's untenable to attempt to link browser usage with political leanings, but perhaps you have other data points that you're basing it on as well? - Chieze Okoye
It's been my … observation … that Republicans like to blindly follow a pack rather than lead. Few (not all) rarely demonstrate the willingness or capacity to engage in independent thought, This fits in perfectly with MSIE. They assume because Widnows has market share that it's superior. They assume that since IE is bundled with it that it must be superior. Either that, or they're afraid... more... - Michael Collins from twhirl
Hopefully, GreaseMonkey will come to Chrome. - Jauder Ho
Well I am neither Republican nor Democrat - and one thing with Chrome is that I cant export my bookmarks just as easily as I do with IE7 - TrafficBug
Disagree with Collins - it is not because IE comes bundled with my Windows - even if it didnt I would still download and install it and remove any Firefox or Chrome from my system. Another Chrome issue I had was that it was displaying some "web page at null cant be found" and I was very irritated and there is no status bar visible in Chrome may be there is an option to turn it on but I want the status bar to show any javascript errors just as it is in IE7 - - TrafficBug

provisional second for alert thingy - best balance. currently testing twhirl for FF, alertthingy and http://www.feedalizr.com/. Twhirl is most reliable/speedy with updates but separate windows is a pain. Feedalizer does an ok job of both with a filter that allows you to split or merge the feeds but seems to mess with my updates from Twitterfox - my quick check tool when browsing, alertthingy merges multiple sources well and easy access to short URLs reply retweet digg options. FTW based on half time score - pjeedai
Alerty Thingy is probably the best alternative but I prefer Twhirl out of the 2. - Kol Tregaskes
Try the new version of Hubbub, out today. Screenshots at: http://hubbub.me/gallery... - Mark Birbeck
Hubbub looks very interesting, Whats the functionality like? - Ian Cleasby from twhirl
Ian: Hubbub is already pretty rich, but since it's built on a flexible and open platform, we hope it can become even better, very quickly. The platform allows gadgets and widgets to be created using any or all of XForms, HTML, Flash and Silverlight, with the whole app being bound together using JavaScript. It makes for a pretty fast development environment. - Mark Birbeck
http://nambu.com is the most amazing app in the world. Ping.fm, twitter, friendfeed, identi.ca/laconi.ca all in one window. Just great... and free! - Sweyn Venderbush
My biggest complaint about Nambu is that you can't have Twitter and FF open side-by-side. You have to keep clicking between tabs. It's a little annoying after a while. That said, it does have a very nice interface and a lot of potential. I still just love the FF Real Time feed interface. It's hard to beat. - Robert Clockedile from BuddyFeed
The next release of Nambu will allow you to have tweetdeck style side by side windows. It's still in beta so it's a bit buggy but it keeps getting better :) - Gersham Meharg
Link Friendfeed to Google Talk, and then tweak the IM updates. For twitter I just use Tweetdeck. - Keith - @tsudo
