Can you link me to a good place to read up on Roku ? - I have a 60inch HD Plasma - curious
- Fragtastic
This is really a must-have for the connected home, it would seem. Yet quite US-only for the moment. Would be really nice to know which supported services are currently available outside the US and will continue to be. Recently Netflix started filtering by IP address :-(
- Ignacio Rodriguez de R,
Got it for my mom to watch Netflix streaming movies. Just a great, easy to use device that my mom can actually operate!
- Richly N. Chheuy
I work for Netflix, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.
- Matthew Perreault
If you have Tivo u can get Netflix, don't need Roku. I own Apple TV, Roku,Tivo and Vudu. ATV gets the most use. All are in a race for the same content, differentiation is on ease of use, resolution, Apple always wins former, Vudu is best at hi res rt now.
- Michael Metz
Leo, didn't you get a mac mini to use as a HTPC? Seems to me like the mini is a much more capable device.
- Joseph
Ha! You're a poet and you probably didn't even know it.
- Dom Barnes
Thought you had an Xbox 360--works for Netflix as well. Roku website is confusing--which product are you actually using?? I use a Squeezebox for music and the Xbox 360 for most video, original hacked XBMC Xbox doesn't get much use anymore. Cheers.
- Kevin Robison
I bet its a lot quieter than that Noise Beast known as the 360.
- tojfs7931
windows media server (WMP11) works great with the PS3 i find... online content... well it looks GREAT, but for the average user, and sometimes me, its too time comsuming to use just the remote, sure i guess i could use a keyboard, but whats the point -- but for me at this time, the PS3 is by far the best "media centre" I have used -- appletv to me isnt worth it, and well here in canada we dont get hulu and that "natively", we have to use a proxy.
- Bryce Campbell
Can you explain how it is really so much better than running a mac mini or apple tv? I get Netflix on my Xbox, but as far as other features I'm curious....
- Debo
Agree with Debo. I don't have apple tv, but I simply hooked up my computer to my hdtv. I also have an xbox. What would I get from a Roku that I don't already have?
- Bryan Penczak
@Josh Yes Roku has been doing HD for some time now. Both Netflix and Amazon offer HD content for the Roku. Looks outstanding too.
- Sloan Bowman
Is this the only way to stream netflix HD? Can a media center PC do it, for instance?
- Josh Haley
I wish some tech journalists would talk about the lack of consistent subtitling/captioning for the hearing impaired in the digital distribution space. Apple offers only a smattering of content with subtitles, Xbox Live: none, Amazon On Demand: none, Netflix: none. Hulu offers some but none of the set-top clients support it. This is a big deal for people that are tech savvy but hearing impaired.
- Martin Johnson
@Josh I'm not sure about Media center but I know Xbox can stream HD as well. You can of course use your PC/Mac to view HD as well.
- Sloan Bowman
Sloan, that's sort of what I mean, maybe I used the wrong term. I am using xbmc on a PC running windows. If I could get HD streaming from netflix on it rather than having to get another box, that would be worth a subscription.
- Josh Haley
I see, at the moment Netflix isn't supported on XBMC and not sure if it has plans to. But for $99 you can't go wrong with the Roku. I stand by mind 100% an almost perfect device.
- Sloan Bowman
Thanks, Sloan. Martin, oh wow, no subtitles/CC? That's not good. At least with xbmc I can download the srt and display it as needed.
- Josh Haley
I've got three of them in my house. Much Roku goodness!!
- Brian W
3 Rokus in one house, I guess you have to have 3 subscriptions (1 each) yes?
- Josh Haley
Josh you can actually have 6 devices per subscription. I have a Roku and a Bluray player that both stream from Netflix. Unlimited goodness.
- Sloan Bowman
I have a Mac Mini already hooked to my HDTV and I'm using Boxee or Plex (trying to decide which I like best), is there any advantage to me getting Roku?
- Robert Hafer
I'm happy with the Samsung BluRay that streams Netflix. But Bluray DVD's are too limiting for my travel.
- john coffey
Give me Boxee on Roku and I'm out to buy it immediately. No news on the Boxee blog or forums, so I have a suspicion that it just won't happen.
- Fleagle
grrrr mumble mumble Australia mumble grrr
- Jordan Brock
Really annoyed that Netflix streaming isn't available outside the US. I was a paying US customer until I moved abroad and they started disallowing access to streaming movies. Not happy at all about that and I wish they'd give us back that capability. http://www.raoulpop.com/2009...
- Raoul Pop
Terrapin Station was probably the only Dead song I ever really liked.
- john coffey
OMG! I went to this concert. My first Dead concert and I'll never forget hearing the sounds of "Bertha" as we came into the arena. Last time I ever had a drink of Southern Comfort.
- Philip Ohler
I became the first subscriber on YouTube for the WindowsVideos account. Just watched the first commercial and it's out of sync. I didnt like the aethetic right from the start and I tried very hard to understand it, but couldnt. I watched it again and tried to get it, but I still am not getting it. Perhaps Im missing something.
- Andrew Baron
@sarah a lot of these high-end commercials use :90 format for the web and limited runs and then cut it down in to :60 and :30 spots
- Morgan
Here is a screenshot of the account the commercial was uploaded. It looks like I stubbled upon it just moments after it went live: http://flickr.com/photos...
- Andrew Baron
What the.... This is it? Cripes. This is more damaging to their image than anything Apple have put out.
- Andrew
hilarious. it's good to see seinfeld. and gates is awesome to let himself be parodied like that.
- Ranjit Mathoda
Yes, my man Bill is funny. No, your man Steve is not. That is all. :)
- Randy Holloway
I'm a huge Seinfeld fan, but that was pretty weak.
- Matt
Buy Apple stock! Jerry, buy me a MacBook...iConJohn
- john coffey
I don't get it either. these commercials will be a miss. Seinfeld is so "I love the 90s".
- Alan Le
Andrew, you're not missing anything. There's nothing to get. A bunch of silly nonsensicle halabaloo. Microsoft continues to be completely out of touch with, everything. Ad campaign FAIL!
- John Reynolds
from twhirl
I like Seinfeld. I'm still disgruntled with Microsoft.
- Chris Menning
I thought it was funny, too. Effective as far as selling or promoting anything, probably not, but I liked it as a standalone bit.
- abacab
Well, that felt uninspired. Amusing, though, but not the right way.
- W. Thomas Leroux
I love that's his jail mugshot on the clown card
- joly
I dunno. it was fun to watch. I'm not one who can be convinced by anything MS does to switch back so I guess I can just watch and enjoy Seinfeld do his thing.
- Capn' One Eye - adrift
Um. No. Gates IS NOT to Microsoft as Jobs is to Apple. Seinfeld draws painful attention to that fact.
- rzklkng
I guess the point is that Microsoft wants to remind general public of themselves and that they can be sort of funny, too ;) Or maybe the idea comes clear after few ads.
- Jemm
But was it really funny? I think *most* people think it wasnt funny. And it has only two stars on YouTube. I complied a list of headlines here: http://dembot.com/post...
- Andrew Baron
it has a "we're one of you, really.. ignore our fortunes, we're *just* *like* *you*" angle to it. I half expected them to have resurrected Al Bundy for the store. I found the windows 1.0 ad with steve ballmer to be funnier!
- alphaxion
Oh dear. 3/10. Must try harder Microsoft. And the out-of-sync audio doesn't reflect that well on your brand.
- Mike Coulter
No... not this way. Could be just waste of money but after moment of thinking... it's actually working nicely. While it gets negative attention, that is still good for overall ad campaign since it gets people speaking of it. And more time people spend of talking, more closely they remember it.
- Daniel Schildt
@Daniel, since when was it out of fashion or too expensive to get people talking about something good? Putting out crap and expecting people to talk about it because its crap is not a very clever option. I cant imagine that they planned to it that way.
- Andrew Baron
I don't think the ad is awful and if it came without the microsoft vs apple cultural baggage or the weight of expectations following microsoft's declaration that they were about to unleash the mother of all campaigns on the world I think reaction might have been more positive. I think Loren Feldman has it right - Microsoft don't need to look cool, their stuff just has to work well for the masses.
- jeremy ettinghausen
Coffey - you just admitted to this guy that you're a blader. Bad move.
- Ryan Olah
I'm a blader! Keep bikes in the street!
- john coffey
I ride a bike for transportation and exercise, a skateboard for tricks and recreation. Inline skates, never understood it. This is the nice and passive response. Inliners DO take up more room on the path than they should be allowed, though.
- Jonathan Finnegan
Sometimes they don't show all the Warriors games because of the Sharks. Still, it would be nice to catch the game if I'm stuck at work.
- Rodfather
maybe, my tv is in the other room, and I could work on the desktop and watch. but it would mostly be an @ work / away from home situation.

One more reason why Rachel Ray makes me sick! Have I told you my new show idea called "Being Rachel Ray"? It involves midgets acting like her while teaching college kids how to live the Rachel Ray Way. Mark my words: for the next three years, she is the new Oprah.
- Schlomo Rabinowitz
Is it that sad? The guy was productive but also a freaking cry baby every year around the trade deadline. Saying that Boston didn't deserve him? Puhleeze!! Diva be gone! They got a productive bat to replace him that wont cause a shitstorm, so they can focus on playing ball again. The next diva that needs to be dealt with... Brett Favre. Ugh.
- Louie
Kind of like when the Sixers traded my beloved Charles Barkley
- john coffey
As a Yankee Fan, I can't help but be happy. Jason Bay may end up being a good player - but Manny was SCARY in clutch situations....
- George Smith
As a Rays fan, we'd like to have Jason Bay in our lineup. But I think the Red Sox are easier to beat with Bay and without Manny. Check the standings... the Rays are 3 games ahead of the Sox, and 4 games ahead of the Yankees. The Rays have today of, but tomorrow is August 1, and the Rays lead the AL East. Get used to it, Red Sox Nation. The Rays are young, loaded, and they're learning how to win the division. :)
