Bought the iPhone 3GS 2 days ago, trying to organize the homescreens now. (Also: the move from iPod Touch to iPhone is actually a bit scary.)

Holy mackerel, Matt!! Your head is shiny! My current favorite gadget is the Blackberry 8900+Google Voice. I feel sorry for those poor iPhone users ;)

Blackberry 8900, although I cannot wait for the 9700, T-Mobile needs a 3G Blackberry device like yesterday :)
- Nithin Jawali
@Stelian: To use it with the operator I prefer here in Sweden, I have to jailbreak and unlock it. And its always scary to see if you made all settings right, and don't pay per MB of data you use, or roams of another network etc.
- Gustav Holmström
iPhone 3GS - I dumped a BB Bold and I am so happy now!
- Giorgio
@Gustav: Ahh, I know what you mean. I had to do the same here in Switzerland with my 3G. However, you're scared only the first time you do it :-)
- Stelian Iancu
@Stelian: Nah, scared the first days, and really scared to call and check the balance.

I've been really enjoying my new Nike+ app with running sensor that syncs with iPhone 3Gs/iTunes. I've been running alot listening to RAGE and tracking all my data. Pretty cool technology that I am benefiting from healthwise.

Finally Norton has a new product for families. I was disappointed when they ripped the family features out of NIS version 2008-2009.
- Eric @ CS Techcast
hopefully it won't be a pig like the rest of their products have been for years
- Steven Hodson
I think Microsoft has had this for awhile now.
- Richard Ashwell
interesting idea from a company that was starting to become irrelevant IMHO. I lost a lot of trust in companies like Norton and McAfee, among others, when they started hooking their software so deep into the OS that nothing short of diving into the windows registry to remove it was needed.
- Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
Richard, Microsoft is discontinuing their One Care product and replacing it with a free antivirus product (codename "Morrow") late in 2009. EDIT: though I'm not sure if this covers the "Family Safety" product: http://download.live.com/familys...
- Karim
i will defend norton with NIS 2009. Works fine, not a hog, and Norton Removal Tool does the trick if you need to get rid of all things Norton.
- Eric @ CS Techcast
Stopped using or recommending Norton years ago. I think they are cruising on pre-installs and legacies. When simple trojans (Antivirus2009) constantly defeat\disable Norton I can't see allowing it to become my family's online protector.
- Alyx
Sad though that Norton AV Gamer Edition 2009 wont work fine with Windows 7
- Imran Hussain
I hope this is a bit more secure than MS' Family Safety - if not, anybody (child or otherwise) who knows how to uninstall a program can surf the web uninhibited!
- Chris Poirier
Chris, hopefully you're not setting up your kids with Administrator accounts. ;-)
- Karim
Karim: Often times with Windows software you don't have a choice. :-(
- Patrick Pushor
Patrick, examples? I don't have kids so I'm ignorant of this. The last time I helped someone with kids where the kids "needed" Adminstrator rights, it was because the kids wanted to install some malware :-D
- Karim
Karim, that's assuming of course the user who installed the program was technologically inclined enough to a.) set his or her children up with a limited account, and b.) know the difference between the two. You'd be surprised how many people overlook this. Personally, I think a parent's credentials required on uninstall - just as there is in order to change any other setting in the program.
- Chris Poirier
Chris, new accounts are limited by default, I thought -- and in any event, the New User Account wizard pretty much explains the differences between the two kinds of accounts in plain language. You get no argument from me on the people just being generally stupid point, though :-D
- Karim
what if it's a disgruntled employee with access to the account? that would be even cooler
- Nathan Chase
ZOMG - take it to the Really Gay Room. On second thought, we don't really want Bill O Riley - keep him here on the home thread.
- Sparky, a big deal
41 minutes and counting. It's on TC now. You think somebody's home at Fox News?
- Jared Smith
I think it's a fake account. I saw one the other day for 20th Century Fox talking about how no one wants to see the Watchmen movie and how "great" some of their crappy movies have been. There's also a fake Michael Bay one floating around.
- James Ferguson
oh there's nothing funnier than the thought of papa bear o'reilly gettin it up the rear from some big hairy queeny guy...i love it :-)
- Cardeen Martinez
guess why jaiku had been sold to Google while they had _much_ better price on SMS (my assumption, not necesserily fact) and adsense in right column? ;)
- A.T.
Sean, that's exactly what I'm talking about - they should have given the users an option to pay if they wanted instead of simply cutting everything out.
- Svetlana Gladkova
from twhirl
@silpol: Actually Google's purchase of Jaiku is still a mistery to me, I don't think it was done for profit, really.
- Svetlana Gladkova
from twhirl
@Svetlana, I guess it may have something to do with Android, it's being moved to google's app engine, and I read somewhere it will be the default messaging service in android or something.
- Hassan Ibraheem
@Hassan: That was my guess as well, though I have nothing to prove it. But it was not for profite, that's the main point.
- Svetlana Gladkova
from twhirl
Svetlana, Google Ads are just one of the many options available. They could do so much to monetize Twitter.
- Imran Hussain
Yes, that's what I wrote the post for and I've seen quite a number of options for monetization offered to Twitter but they still seem unwilling to listen and that's strange. It's just that adsense is the worst option they could use, in my opinion.
- Svetlana Gladkova
from twhirl
actually jaiku deserves separate posting, but my main hypothesis is simple - Google bought it for geo-data (already available) , relatively simple collection and update, and stealing it from competitors. The only missing component was community around of it - there was (and still is) only very small, compared to Twitter. And I guess they were already closer to black ink - Finnish business environment is hard, those who survive are strong.
- A.T.
silpol: You could be absolutely right here. Google is well-known for collecting all the types of services that seem to be trendy. And the community in Jaiku hardly has chances to grow in private beta so it's obvious.
- Svetlana Gladkova
from twhirl
An observation: while some folks here are advocating an ad supported twitter SMS service many net users complain about online advertising and take measures to block it. There is no free lunch of course.
- Ian May
@Ian May: True, and every blogger often faces complains from readers about us having to show blogs to the eyes of our readers. The war seems to be never-ending and while some people complain about ads, others want to have evrything free and ad-supported instead.
- Svetlana Gladkova
from twhirl
I am calling 911 as we speak. But how will they understand what I'm talking about? "Yeah, this woman cross-Tweeted to Friendfeed that she was gonna kill people." .... "Uh, cross-who-now?"
- Eric Geller
Well I just read "The Zen of Zombie" so I can easily ignore your cunning flip-out ninja skillz. Of course I may end up losing an arm in the process, but Zombies care not for these things.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
The ad wasn't intended to do anything more than link Jerry Seinfeld and Microsoft. I think it succeeded. We'll see where it goes next.
- Chris Baskind
Perhaps it's just so darn clever that hardly anybody has realised just how clever it is...
- Jonathan Beckett
Its way to early to judge the campaign, we have no idea what direction they will take with the future ads. I think the first ad was interesting, crap on its own but as part of a larger campaign it may be alright
- Arthur Guy
It's not about Apple, it's not even about us (even though we think the world revolves around Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) It's about connecting with consumers again. And as pointed out already here in the comments - this video is just the start. My thoughts Microsoft - a Consumer Brand? http://tinyurl.com/5kap2w
- Dave Isbitski
I like Jerry Seinfeld. The jokes weren't clear. the sound on some of Bill Gates' lines was muffeld. I like Jerry.
- Steve Garfield
from twhirl
I wouldn't even call them ads, they are more like Microsoft branded entertainment. It has nothing to do with a product, more just "hey that Bill Gates isn't such a mean guy, he's funny, and look it's Jerry Seinfeld!"
- Chris Stevenson
Did someone in that crew think that the old Taster's Choice ads were especially clever
- Laurie Sefton
from twhirl
For years Microsoft never even had a marketing campaign (at least not one noteworthy enough to reach the average user), and now, they have adopted a shoot from the hip strategy that is sure to keep them as clueless as ever.
- jcunwired
Marketing doesn't always have to be about shoving products and taglines down people's throats. No commercial will ever convince people that Vista is awesome and at least they realize that. These commercials appear to be aimed at MSFT's real problem which is their brand image, and I think this one did a pretty good job at reframing people's image of the company.
- Devlin Dunsmore
from twhirl
i thought it was great. the first of many. and +1 Devlin
- Morgan
It was a funny commercial but in no way is going to help Vista sales IMHO
- David Ward
Marketing is about positioning your brand in the mind of the consumer. I thought they were dreadful, but then marketers always hate each others ads ;-)
- Sally Church
i agree david - but i don't think the goal is to help Vista sales.
- Morgan
I had a group of 12-16 year old Boy Scouts in my home for that, and not a single one of them could figure out what that was an ad for, neither could the adults, non-techies, that were in the room. (and neither could I, the techie) It wasn't until I read it on blogs later that I realized it was a Microsoft ad.
- Jesse Stay
The ad is neat. But I think they need more than neat. I think they've overestimated the esteem of their brand and underestimated the damage of those Mac ads.
- timedalkat
It was pretty subtle. They're trying to say "we get it, we know what you want, and we know we haven't done it yet" but it's a little on the wink wink nudge nudge side. Then again, if they just came out and said "we're going to stop making lousy operating systems" nobody would believe them, so indirect and implicit is probably the best they can do. I don't envy Microsoft marketing and the position they are in.
- Jason Wehmhoener
Seinfeld's show was about nothing. But you had to watch a lot of it to really appreciate it. If Redmond can create that sort of viewing behavior, they have a shot at conveying a message. It's an expensive way to go, but that doesn't seem to be a problem.
- Oldengrey (Jay)
Jason, what are they trying to say they get? Shoes?
- Jesse Stay
from twhirl
Of course all of this presupposes that the people who matter even watch commercials anymore. I certainly don't. I've got better things to do with my time...
- Alex Scoble
And this spots looks like anything but a commercial.
- Chris Baskind
I thought it was slow, boring, confusing, "insider", and denigrating to both of these talented people (Jerry and Bill)
- Roxanne Darling
from twhirl
The interesting thing for me were the Hispanic influences in the commercial from the family wondering who they were to churros at the beginning and ending
- Tomas
from Alert Thingy
I didn't love the ad, but I think this is a long term campaign to put a human face onto Microsoft, something they desperately need. They don't need to sell more vista with this one ad, they need to change everyone's perspective on MS as a company. If they can do that, they'll sell more everything.
- felix
I rather liked the ad, actually. It's refreshing to see Microsoft not being so uptight.
- Evan Sims
i think CEOs (or former CEOs) make lousy actors - esp. in *ads* for *their* company. bad move.
- MikeAmundsen
Did somebody get a talking points memo about this? I keep seeing comments about "putting a human face" on MS. Whatever.
- Patrick Beard
from twhirl
Sorry I should have been more clear. To me it said that they know their operating systems aren't "easy as cake". Meh, it's an ad. Whatever.
- Jason Wehmhoener
Robert, given your insider knowledge of MS culture, what do you think they need to do?
- Sprague D
Chrome is probably the most efficient browser I've seen to date. But maybe that's coz I'm not that old to have seen every browser to date. :)
- Imran Hussain
Started Chrome before FF, in fact I don't even have FF open yet.

i am digging it too. weird thing happened to me this morning though. i was in facebook and only certain major nav links were working. I had to revert to firefox.

from twhirl
I haven't launched Firefox since Chrome came out.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I'm using Chrome on 2 of my PCs as my primary browser -- it's faster and feels better. Still using Firefox on my Mac, because, well, it's a Mac. :)

Running Chrome on the PC's and Omniweb on the Mac.

feels like I run into more and more crashes tho..that's kinda a bad thing
- Pascal
I've been using Chrome off and on. It doesn't support NTLM so at work I use FF, because I don't want to login to every site. @Imran, lynx was probably the most efficient, but then it was text only.
- Shawn McCollum
A lot of spin out there that seems to conveniently ignore the fact that this is Chrome 1.0. You think its just going to go away or something? They'll fix the bugs. And Google has quietly encircled Microsoft, and can now slowly choke off their bloodflow. Lots of users (think parents) can now turn on a computer using a non-MS OS, use a Google browser, to read their Google mail, surf the...

- Eric P
why why why name your tech blog LiveCrunch... :(

- JA Castillo
It is just so quick to anticipate the website I am typing. It usually gets it after two letters. Fantastic!
- Barak B
I've been using it almost exclusively. Even with some Sharepoint sites I use for work and a fantasy football draft.
- Brian Newman
I no longer really remember the Chrome startup time, because we've not stopped/quit Chrome since it was installed, nor have we had to. I'd have killed/restarted Firefox a couple dozen times (at least) over the same time period, and IE probably a few times, too. Opera...hard to say, but it doesn't matter anyway. ;)

I like the feature of 'task manager' for browser, and thats helps keep me running chrome forever, wont have to kill it if some site creats an issue

Has anyone noticed a lag when loading javascript/ajax call heavy pages? It seems that the javascript/ajax call has to completely finish before the page will show, FF and IE don't lag but chrome does.

+1 Eric... I only "stop" Firefox when I am updating an extension.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
have they said when they will introduce the mac version?
- Johnny Sewell
it has a long way to go but I still enjoy using it. For some odd reason it doesn't like to scroll with my trackpad so I can't use it on my laptop. Certain sites it just won't work with and I've run across a few PNG and font rendering issues. I look forward to seeing how it develops
- Zach Chisholm
funny for sure Eric...but surely not the 1st step to masses flocking to buy their products. If this is the 1st ad of many, fair enough - but i predict fail.
- Zee.
Clever ad, SuperBowl-class in terms of stickiness. And chewiness. This is just an icebreaker to get people talking. One of those icebreakers with chewy mint-gel centers.
- Wade Dorrell
you could be right. All i know is that if it this wasn't Bill Gates & Seinfeld and they hadn't spent a fortune on it...i probably wouldn't be sharing or watching.
- Zee.
I like Jerry Seinfeld. (I think. I may actually just like Larry David's writing.) I like Bill Gates, even though I'm not keen on MS. But this? Not so much.
- Marci Maleski
Hmm. Let me watch it again after sniffing some glue. Maybe it will then make more sense.
- Andrew Leyden
This is the worst commercial I've ever seen. It's pointless, banal, and does not even mention Windows. How exactly is this supposed to "fight back against the Mac vs. PC ads" like the agency claimed?!
- Sparky, a big deal
Unflexible shoes that are uncomfortable at first... so Vista essentially :)
- Johnny Worthington
Sparky, I think not mentioning "Windows" by name is the point. The point is to make you smile, then draw a picture in your head of the future of computers being FUN, then sear the logo into your brain. The associative cortex in your brain does the rest.
- Karim
Karim - there is nothing FUN about that advert. It's BillG being awkward. The whole thing made me cringe. Apple is on the attack - MS needs to respond. This kind of thing (same thing they did for Zune) might appeal to a small audience, but it fails to really advance the brand or put the product out there and make the product _sexy_
- Sparky, a big deal
I respectfully disagree. The "Get a Mac" campaign ("Hello, I'm a Mac...") doesn't really "put the product out there" or make the product "sexy" -- it basically just trashes the competition in a humorous way. The iPod ads are genius, but they just picture silhouettes of people flailing about on brightly colored backgrounds. The famous "1984" and "Think Different" ads do *NOTHING* to put the product out there or make it look sexy.
- Karim
The best ads aren't trying to drill to the product's feature list into your skull, just as the best propaganda doesn't really get into a lot of boring details. It's all about evoking an emotional response -- either a positive emotion associated with the brand, or a negative emotion associated with failure to use the brand. Danica Patrick doesn't talk about GoDaddy's networking infrastructure.
- Karim
As for humor that makes you cringe, I guess you don't like any film with Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler... :-D I thought it was funny that Bill poked fun at himself, but I'm sure not everyone did.
- Karim
I totally misread this, I was wondering who the unlucky 4 million people with broken WP blogs were. :-|
- cmiper
As a new joiner, I'm wondering if I could be #4,000,000. Would that count as fashionably late? I agree, very stable and fast set-up; most of all it's the support and exposure they give to the very new efforts like mine that I appreciate. Never knew so many people would be reading a pretty ordinary blog within just a few weeks. Wouldn't happen stand-alone.
- Andrew Lewin
Wow .. and that doesn't include self-hosted Wordpress blogs.
- Mattb4rd
the title sounds disastrous! although yay for Wordpress, couldn't have seen blogging to be so widespread if it wasn't for Wordpress.
- Imran Hussain
Self-hosted Wordpress blogs FTW. If you're serious about blogging then you should test your installed builds on a dev server before you deploy on production. No-brainer!
- Glenn Batuyong
just tested the wordpress.com to blurb.com integration for blog to book conversion and it's really solid.
- Achim Voermanek
Hmmm in this story context does "breaks" mean "corrupts/destroys/causes-malfunction" or does it mean "surpasses a number"? Guess it pays to click the link and read!

I resent that remark David. ;) Some of us have unfortunate PC fascinations.
- Steve Spalding
I think you're going to have to prove that outrageous statement
- David Knight
i don't think most bloggers are mac users necessarily, but most computer users are not bloggers either.
- Cee Bee
Agreed. Seems like a Mac-elitist mentality.
- Olaf
from feedalizr
I know this really hurt their chances for me as a mac user to get this when it does actually come out for mac. Firefox=win Firefox add-ons=win
- orionstarr
Dang, bro, did you think before posting that statement? Where's your numbers to back up that statement? How do you define blogger?
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
Macs have always been the computers more in touch with a media savy market. It makes sense that most bloggers i'm sure use a Mac. Call me an elitist, I just like high quality products.
- orionstarr
The underlying reality is that the vast majority of web users don't use a Mac. It's a simple case of catering to the majority of the market and not the niche.
- Olaf
from feedalizr
Labelling a Mac as a high-quality product, merely because it is pretty, is highly questionable.
- Olaf
from feedalizr
You might be able to get away with this statement if you substitute bloggers with designers but seriously . . . you are mistaken. Maybe his definition of bloggers is skewed.
- Lindsey is Fierce!
Well being a Mac user/Apple snot myself, from a business perspective it's probably a sheer numbers thing....windows users are easy to tap into because they make up a huge part of the home computing market AND most of the workplace environments in corporate....at least in my experience in tech over the last 12+ years.
- Rich Harris
Not exact an official launch, it is beta after all. Maybe google was too excited to compete. :D
- Ron
Of course its a numbers thing. I'm not an idiot.
- David Risley
@Rich BINGO! As much as we all hate Windblows, the underlying reality prevails
- Olaf
from feedalizr
Says me with both a Windblows laptop and Mac in front of me
- Olaf
from feedalizr
Having used a Mac for over 10 years I can give a good testimonial why I think it is a high quality product. No crashes, No Viruses, Doesn't slow down, Interface is lovely. My experiences with windows have been, virus ridden, computer bogs down and the interface is horrid.
- orionstarr
Their are more ants in the world than people, does that make them superior?
- orionstarr
@David I think you were missing the word "smart" - most "smart" bloggers are Mac users (.....ok people, i'm just kidding so RELAX - it's like you are all in a PC/Mac commercial or sumptin')
- leigh himel
Yes, I'm finally proud to have a PC now. Suck it up Mac users!!

from feedalizr
At the end of the day: whatever gets the job done as easily as possible.
- Olaf
from feedalizr
i'm quite happy with the launch - thanks :)

I'll go with most Bloggers are heavier Firefox users, but I serious doubt Apple has gotten to the point where 'most bloggers are Apple users' ?? except maybe in the Bay area :)
- Charlie Anzman
An interesting claim, no doubt. what do most blog readers use?
- JustinLL
from twhirl
Maybe Google was smart and didn't because they knew no true Apple loyalist would dare use a non apple product. Apple has Safari, why break ranks and use something from a competitor? If it's made by Apple, it's surely the best.
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
I can use either and like both. But price and being associate with Mac users with self esteem issues keeps me from buying one.
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
I use Ubuntu. Maybe they should have launched Chrome on Linux first. The most tech savvy people use Linux or another Unix derivative. ;-)
- roel
not on Mac over here! (but feel free to buy me one)
- Sarah Perez
Huh. Turn on "Suggested Sites" and IE8 sends your queries, surfing data, IP address and clicks to MSFT. Read http://www.microsoft.com/windows... closely.
I couldn't figure out how they show the suggested sites when you visit https://ieonline.microsoft.com/ . They don't use cookies or user accounts.
- Ionut
There are certain scenarios that require user data to be sent in order to make the user experience better, as suggested by http://tinyurl.com/3yue6c. Which if you read closely, discloses that Google collects exactly the same information if the user installs Google Toolbar and opts in particular features.
- Franci Penov
Hi, Franci Penov! Remind me what part of MSFT you work at? I guess I thought that Google's disclosure at http://bit.ly/2Jiwrg with the big red capital letters and disclosure in the first sentence was more clear than MSFT's disclosure, which was buried deep in the IE8 privacy page.
- Matt Cutts
Doesn't it say that it is the search provider which collects this data, and not the browser? That means it's more equivalent to the third bullet on this page. http://www.google.com/intl...
- David Owens
9 processes are loaded with the browser in Windows (No doubt toolbar type tracking processes). You can turn them off but it's not as easy or obvious as recent efforts by Google and Yahoo to opt out.
- Charlie Anzman
hmm.. well you can find out this much information about visitors to your websites and blogs too. But if MSFT finds out this info, they're blasted?
- Imran Hussain
from feedalizr
Matt, I work on Windows Live Toolbar. :-) I have not seen the big red letter warning you point to, as I have not installed Google Toolbar (exactly because of the product I work on). But you could've just mention that you have a problem with the disclosure clarity. I'll make sure your feedback gets to the IE guys.
- Franci Penov
http://tinyurl.com/6q9vou - Chrome Privacy Policy. Not as obvious as Google Toolbar big red letter warning; I personally had to dig a little bit around before I found it. I'd say about as clear and discoverable as IE8 Privacy policy you complained about. :-)
- Franci Penov
Franci Penov, thanks for passing on my feedback to the IE guys. I don't think Google Chrome has anything to hide (e.g. it doesn't send your browsing info to Google as you surf the web). In fact, I just did a separate write-up on the communication between Chrome and Google. Read it at http://bit.ly/2jnBYZ
- Matt Cutts
Imran, I think it's fair to point out that IE8 gives users virtually no disclosure that their wholesale surfing data (including queries done on other search engines) will be sent to Microsoft if they turn on this innocent-sounding feature.
- Matt Cutts
@mattcutts the Google reputation manager? :)
