Apparently Julia didn't teach me enough all those hours I spent of my childhood watching her cook. Thanks for the info guys. Sorry that we aren't really helping you out Brett.

2009 was the first year I grew shallots. I started them from sets. Pretty easy to do and worth it if you've got the room in the garden. Cheaper than buying them at the store, even with the high cost of sets. Good luck finding the rest of what you need, Bret!
- Spidra Webster
I've set up all those services to go to otherinbox. Works well.
- Ian May
+1 for Akiva, I chose to receive only things I am interested in, all the rest doesn't reach me at all or just goes tagged and archived waiting to be cleaned when I have time.
- Flavio
I don't think that's necessary coz it isn't spam. You chose to receive those notifications and u can chose to filter or stop them anytime u want.
- Frederick Bvalani

Set up a filter (auto delete) or use another email address. Personal responsibility.
- Johnny Worthington
I find it quite easy to stop emails from services like that via the services themselves.
- Kol Tregaskes
I set up a filter to grab most of these, then I set up individual filters for services that escape it.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I wish the calendar would sync with Outlook 2010, I wish individual tasks could be easily emailed

I have already opted out of Twitter and now I will do the same for Foursquare, one at a time!
- Zahid Lilani
I love that two people mentioned otherinbox right away. I've heard that's good, just never got around to using it. I turn most of my notifications off at the services themselves, but it depends how granular the choices are. Sometimes I do miss a bit by having them turned off, especially if it's a place like LinkedIn, where I wouldn't normally go to the site, but some of the notifications are of interest.
- Laura Norvig
the auto-delete on a filter seems to kill this problem for everyone except for the sender and google. You could, of course, tell Facebook, foursquare, etc to stop emailing you.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Filter >>> delete :) done! (Also you can manually opt out of many of these "notifictions" at each service)

Brett, you're obviously a liberal because only a liberal elitist would be smart enough to notice what's wrong with that update. Or only a liberal would dare say anything against the hockey mom. Or something.

Even I couldn't do this about a month ago. But peristant effort and lots of time to waste saved the day. Yes, I'm a complete loser....
- अभिषेक(Abhishek) Das
Always could do it, I'm all ...bendy LOL!
- cristina sasu
I used to before I had my son. I could do it on my index and middle fingers. A few weeks after delivering him, I found I lost that ability on both hands. Weird.
- Admiral Anika
@Adrian Me too. Adrian and Cristina, welcome to the group! ;)

@Cristina @Anika Who knows, I think we're aliens and this is our special sign to spot our bretherens. O_o
- अभिषेक(Abhishek) Das
yes, with all of my fingers. simultaneously, if i need to. my wife can do this as well, so it's a pretty safe bet that we've passed this trait on to our kids.
- Joe Silence
Yes, only that 1 finger on my left hand though. I broke that one when I was a kid and have been able to do that ever since. I can also bend the 2nd joint of both ring fingers, without bending the first. I can also easily lift the middle 3 toes on both feet off the floor while standing, without raising the big or little toes. I can also wiggle my ears and raise my right eyebrow (just not at the same time).
- April Russo (app103)
multi-colored definitely. and the old fat bulbs, not those tiny ones you can hardly see. that's what i grew up with - fat multi-colored bulbs.
- Christa
We always had multi-coloured on the Christmas tree, but my mother was adamantly against anything that blinked or twinkled or did anything cool, so that sort of fun was not to be had. Other small indoor trees we had were decorated mostly with all white bulbs, though.
- Katy S
I cant handle anything that twinkles. I like static lights. Christa, those bulbs were also what my aunt had while i was growing up. We were always afraid the tree would burn down because they got so hot!
- Mary Carmen
I have always liked colored lights. Betsy likes white...thus, we have a pre-lit white tree. UNTIL THIS YEAR, when Eliza broke the tie and we had to add colored lights. I win!
- Jason Griffey
outsiide, i love multi-colored (esp. against teh snow). inside, we have all white, but that's really just cuz they were on sale, and all my ornaments are silvery - so it makes for a very "classic" tree. note: i ain't never "classic".
- jambina
I like all white on the tree. and outside whatever coloured - this year I have all blue on the little shrub. last year it as multi-colour.
- Nathalie, Dreamer of FF
I'm all white on the tree and multi elsewhere at the moment, but I'm not locked into any particular look.
- Michael W. May
Mary - I don't necessarily want them now, but as a kid I did because we were forbidden to have them. One year we colluded with my dad to get a set of lights for the tree that had 8 modes of action. We didn't tell my mom. When she wasn't looking we'd always switch it from no movement to one of the waves or flickers. She was a bit annoyed with us that year. The only thing that saved us was the fact that it had that one option she likes.
- Katy S
Katy, that is hilarious. My mom would never allow that. I can handle slow twinkling, but omg, some of the settings nowadays are like TECHNO.
- Mary Carmen
umm... at work white or blue to match the circ desk. at home i think multi? i don't remember.
- Kendra <3 Three Lions
She also doesn't like it when my dad and I play the Tales From The Crypt album Have Yourself A Scary Little Christmas. We tend to crank up Deck The Halls With Parts Of Charlie in honor of my dad's older brother, Charlie. We are not allowed to play it in her presence, so when I'm at their house and she leaves, my dad and I turn it on right away.

I prefer multi-colored, or a string of a single color. No whites-only strings for me.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
multicolored on the tree and white outside
- Abigail
On my balcony I have multi-colored, but at the twist of a dial they can be changed from all white to multi-colored or transitioning back and forth (also steady or blinking.) Alas, my apartment complex has several of those humongous inflatable Santas, snowmen, etc. so there is no hope for nuanced Holiday decoration around here.
- Mark "DerBingle" J
black (looking at them though, you can see the red filament, does that make them multi?)
- chaz2b
We always had multi-lights, but I've grown to love all white (or blue). I think they are so elegant, and more natural, which I love. I can't stand "moving" and flashing lights. If I wanted a migraine or a seizure I would find another way to get one thanks. LED ftw!!! <3
- Heather
I have a single strand of multi-colored randomly flashing (literally - the whole string does not flash together) lights on my tree. They were on our tree when i was growing up, but one year my mom declared that we would have white lights only. My MIL is apparently * adamant* about white lights only. I love th C9 bulbs for putting on my house :)
- ~Courtney F.
I recently bought multi-colored lights for my swingin' bachelor pad. It didn't even occur to me to buy all-white. I like lots of color. If I wanted all white, I'd move to a small town in Kansas. http://instantrimshot.com/
- josh neff, geek at large
We have multicolored LED lights and some awesome purple lights that I can't use now because I can't find replacements for the broken bulbs. White on the fake tree, they are built in.

We have multi on the outside bushes, white on the garland hanging at the top of our bookshelves, & red on the (devil) tree

Colorful lights that move in various different patterns. With all the cool stuff you can do with cheap technology these days, why not?

We have all white lights this year, but in the years past we've had a combination of red & white.

Multicolored!!! All white are to light silk tents for weddings and our sorority house for Secret Shindigs.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
Both. And all-blue, all-purple, etc. I use lights year round in lots of ways now though, they were always my fave thing about Christmas. I made flower lights for my room, those are white: http://pics.livejournal.com/lostlo...

its easy I have two little trees that belonged to my parents..........one is in multi and one in white.....so no fights here...........:)....bit growing up it was always multi on the tree
- VAL D. Zone
our tree is strung with all red lights, and i'm a little concerned it might look kind of brothel-ish, but we temper it with white-light strung garland around the windows and doors. i love our house decorated for christmas!
- Nancy Sp♠id
on the tree, all white. no blinky. outside - colors, blinky, whatever you can find. inflatable santa on a motorcycle, whatever.

multicolored outside, white on tree inside, but i like to mix it up. i would alternate on the tree, but it's prelit.

I think cut & paste was a more important feature for detractors than people who actually owned iPhones. If Apple would have included it initially, it would have immediately sunk plenty of anti-iPhone arguments. And I think that Apple didn't include it because they figured out the truth of the matter before anyone else did: it's not that commonly useful for most people on a phone.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Good question, I use it once a day. Glad to have the feature.
- Josh Landsberg
Akiva: I think Apple realized that it was less of a necessity on a one-app-at-a-time mobile os.

I've always had C&P on my BB and I do use it quite a bit really.

dried fruit (esp raisins), alcohol and a bit of suet as a pie filling. I've never had it but I really like raisin pie so I think I'd probably like mince pies.
- Spidra Webster
I used to think meat and fruit couldn't mix but there used to be a Peruvian restaurant in town and they totally changed my mind on that with a sort of Peruvian tamale they made with raisins in it.
- Spidra Webster
There's no nuts in it?!?! WTF did they feed me? I refuse to believe those crunchy bits were actual meat.
- Admiral Anika
One of my great-aunts made mincemeat pies every Thanksgiving. I never tried it.
- Katy S
"minced meat" is a common term in the UK for what we in the US call "hamburger." Mincemeat (or "mince," as it's often called) is a pie filling dating back to the middle ages that consists of small pieces of fruits, nuts, and suet, usually soaked in wine or other spirits. It used to be considered a great delicacy and has since fallen somewhat out of favor.
- Mistletoe Glen
The preparation was also a good way to preserve meat way back when. It also adds filler (the fruits and such), extending the amount of meat that a person had to use. In that context, it makes sense, but I've never felt compelled to try a mincemeat pie. The aroma of the ones I've been near have not been enticing.
- Katy S
My grandmother used to make Mincemeat pie and made her own mixture, which yes, did include suet......however, there is no meaty taste....just sweet. Now you can buy mincemeat in jars to make pies, but there is no longer any suet added to it. She used to put "hard" sauce over the pie...that's just butter, confectioner's sugar, and booze.....like brandy, rum or whiskey....it was the best part!
- Bonnie Foster
I like mincemeat pies from time to time. I've never had one that tasted like meat, though, and if meat was part of the mix it was barely recognizable.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
modern meaning of minced meat is identical to that of ground meat. IOW, minced beef = ground beef.
- Joe Silence
My grandmother used to make it when I was a kid. It was like an extra spicy raisin pie. I ate it and didn't hate it, but then, no one ever told me it actually had MEAT in it! I thought it was "mincemeat" in the same way that the edible part of a nut is "nutmeat." Once I had eaten it, it's probably best that I didn't find out what it really was.
- Mark "DerBingle" J
the mincemeat pies you get in the US are generally meatless.
- Joe Silence
No, but what you can buy the filling (and mostly) what's made has changed from the original recipe. Still, its quite good if you like a very sweet pie. I recommend Nonsuch and Crosse and Blackwells. I would not recommend that you get the reconstituted (in the box) on your first go at it even though it is cheaper. It's rather nasty and will definitely put you off mincemeat forever. :)
- Melanie Reed
And don't forget to add the Brandy! Most important! :)
- Melanie Reed
+++ Bonnie. Agree it is the best part. :)
- Melanie Reed
This is the cookbook I have which has a good mincemeat recipe: "Great British Cooking: A Well Kept Secret" by Jane Garmey It has a great forward by Calvin Trillan p.254
- Melanie Reed
I'll bet that's an interesting book... The British aren't renowned for good cooking!
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Lindsay, yeah. Ive enjoyed and tried several of the recipes. Colcannon, Poor Knights of Windsor, Toad in the Hole, Bubble and Squeak are a few of my favorites!
- Melanie Reed
Mince meat is actually chopped dried fruit, as in mince pies
- Ian May
Lindsay asked about minced meat, tho. not mince meat.
- Joe Silence
I've never had mincemeat with meat in, only dried fruit. Tradition may have stipulated meat many years ago.
- Ian May
@Joe, I didn't know there was a difference... I was asking about the dish that seems to be served around this time of year. :)
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Minced in England is what is ground in the US
- Ian May
but mincemeat (usually one word) is dried chopped fruit.
- Ian May
If one goes into an English butchers shop and wanted some ground beef, one would ask for mince, or minced beef.
- Ian May
@Melanie --What? Mincemeat involves Brandy? Well that explains a lot! @Joe --I shall cling to the hope that my grandmother's version did not, in fact, contain meat.
- Mark "DerBingle" J
Mincemeat can and does vary a bit between commercial brands, and home made (which some do lace with alcohol)
- Ian May
mincemeat pie is okay, but i'll go with apple or razzleberry or even cherry if i have to.
- Joe Silence
@Mark I hope it explains good things. :) btw- a side note. If any of you have seen the remake of "State Fair" (with Pat Boone) putting brandy in her mincemeat is what wins the Texas State Fair competition for the mother. lol
- Melanie Reed
putting booze in ANYTHING wins at the Texas State Fair.

There is a lot of crap sometimes between US and UK about food and drink. Americans are led to believe English food is bland and the beer is warm; Britons are lead to believe that Americans eat nothing but donuts and McDog, and all look like those 'people from walmart' pics...

@Ian: we do eat WAY too many corn-related products, that much is true.

Melanie. I quite often make Bubble and Squeak, and I made Toad In The Hole recently too

According to my copy of The Oxford Companion To Food, while mincemeat "rarely contains meat nowadays," it often did in the past. Some recipes today still contain suet. "The beef was sometimes partly or wholly replaced by suet from the mid-17th century onwards, and meat had effectively disappeared from 'mincemeat' on both sides of the Atlantic in the 19th century."
- Katy S
And yes, I own an 850+ page reference book about food.

Is there anything that there's not an Oxford Companion for? :D

Shevonne, I'll bet its a wonderful moist fruit cake. :)
- Melanie Reed
Joe, still mostly corn though, after Nixon set up those huge subsidies for it back in the 70's. There wasn't HFCS before that.
- Ian May
HFCS is a particularly American thing too. You don't find it in European products for example.
- Ian May
i never found it in any food in SE Asia, either.
- Joe Silence
American meat is largely banned in the UK, due to the use of growth hormones. UK beef was banned here for a good while due to mad cow, It's a crazy world.

Hey! I like mince pies- with mincemeat. Weird yes, nice also. But then, I like Marmite.
- Pete
I consider this conversation both entertaining and educational ;) My grandmother rocked the mincemeat (in both pie and cookie form) every year around this time - and suet, suet, suet was the magic ingredient as it is with all the old recipes in our family. I don't even know how I would go about buying suet if I needed to.
- Holly Rae
Pete thanks for that. I will look into trying some.
- Melanie Reed
Holly - If you ask most butchers, they can get suet for you. I've seen it in one of the grocery stores here every now and then, but a butcher is your best bet.

"Like many middle-agers, Domino's Pizza is undergoing a bit of cosmetic surgery. The world's largest pizza delivery chain, celebrating its 50th year in the business in 2010, announced today it will be entirely changing its core pizza recipe. "The fact is, we love our pizza, but as times change, so do consumer tastes," said Russell Weiner, Domino's chief marketing officer, in a statement. "We've created a pizza to reflect what consumers are looking for. We're not talking about a slightly altered version of our previous pizza. It's a completely new pizza reinvented from the crust up, and we are proud of it." After 18 months testing dozens of cheeses, 15 sauces and 50 crust-seasoning blends, Domino's decided on the new components of the pizza."
- RAPatton
from Bookmarklet
"The new crust will be seasoned with garlic, butter and parsley. While the new tomato sauce will be sweeter, made with a variety of herbs and a kick of red pepper. The cheese is shredded mozzarella, versus diced, with a hint of provolone."
- RAPatton
I feel like I'm reading the Onion here.
- Andrew C
I had Domino's once, when i was like 12. I liked it. I had been meaning to try it again. I guess I better do it soon!
- Christopher Chung
I love all the melodrama in the comments. I don't know about other people, but I can't be bothered to be brand loyal to a pizza chain. There are so many pizza places out there why would you narrow focus like that? With that said, I've long disliked Domino's so I'm kinda interested to try the new recipe.
- James
Tomato sauce? What tomato sauce? They've been skimping on the sauce for years now.
- ronin
you shouldn't have put this pic here dude, it made me hungry :))
- sonsupernova
I'm wondering if they're testing this in my area -- the pizza crust definitely tasted a lot better the last time I ordered, and the sauce was a bit "richer." (They're the only online delivery place to my house.)
- Jennifer Dittrich
I don't think I've ever liked Domino's, so I'm hoping this change is for the better.
- Dan Hsiao
Are they still giving money to Operation Rescue and other anti-choice/right wing organizations? If so, I'll keep my money in my wallet, thanks.
- cecily
Yup, they're still run by Monaghan and as long as that's the case, it's like giving your $ to cavemen in mitres.
- Spidra Webster
Thanks for the correction, Will. I'd still rather give my $ to locally-owned pizzerias but obviously that's an individual choice.
- Spidra Webster
I was a driver for two years. Sweeter sauce? Bleh, it was too sweet for me already. Dominos is still my favorite of the giant chains though.
- Rob Haas
I'm with Rob. I haven't bought pizza from a major chain in probably four or five years and when I did, it was from Domino's (it was for the Seahawks/Steelers Superbowl). Before then, I had randomly ordered from Pizza Hut. Holy crap, it was palate blasphemy. I'm so grateful for Seattle's outstanding local pizza joints.
