To people who say the new Friendfeed real-time feed is too fast: follow fewer people. Or use filters more. Real time = real life.
It's all about the filters ... but most people wont set them up. The system needs to be smart enough to know. - Jason Goldberg
To people who say I should follow fewer people: if I can have a conversation with one person in a stadium filled with tens of thousands, I should be able to do the same thing on a webservice where I follow only 1300. Not to mention using filters implies that I know today the interesting and compelling content that others will post tomorrow. Again, just how I use the service. Others may use it differently. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
We should be ab le to filter on the fly... that would help. - Wolfman-K
Following fewer people reduces the usefulness of the service. Filters might be a good way of handling things, but how do I know they aren't filtering out things that I'd actually want to see? - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
This is one of the things that's so appealing about the new FF: with filters, I can see in real-time the stuff I *want* to know about as soon as it happens, and peruse the rest as I feel like it. - Ryan Waldron
Real life.. I see that phrase often in games like WoW and RoM. I prefer the virtual version :) - Michele
I'm not sure I appreciate the added value of the beta design, particularly in light of the additional management and time it's going to take me to get it right. The current design has flaws (such as content updating out from underneath you when visiting a link) that are further amplified in the new design. There must be a way to address the update and management issues. - Loren Heiny
The new friendfeed is like talking on a party - to all people at the same time. I feel like a social juggler. - Dan van Moll
Loren: The link issue could be solved by Paul & co. stealing the Diggbar from under Kevin Rose's nose. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Perhaps they should add settings like Twitterfall has... - Cris McRae
I am still learning how to use it myself, but I training myself - Ike
What do you think about the new Friendfeed User Interface? See the poll: http://twtpoll.com/q68d2y - Yaron Orenstein
I've said it elsewhere, the more people you follow, the more of a need there is for filtering. It's not a preference, it's essential. It's true in Twitter, it's true in Friendfeed, it's true in email, it's true in Facebook. If you refuse to use the tools they have given you to manage the noise, then you have to deal with the it's design. That's your choice. - Bwana ☠
Just heard on Cnet BuzzOutLoud (http://bol.cnet.com/) that it may not be visible to everyone yet. See http://beta.friendfeed.com/ and see if you experience the new features. - Andy Pflueger
I'm pretty sure I don't have 300—let alone 3—people in real life constantly telling me every single thing they do and create in real time. ;) They send me an e-mail, a tweet, or I catch up on their activity in my Flickr contacts list on my own time. This is a very different and interesting shift for social media. - David Chartier
Mine's not moving fast at all. I suppose I wasn't using it to it's full capacity before... :-\ - David Wynn
Bwana: Filtering isn't the panacea you're making it out to be. There's a reason I follow the people and topics I do, and if I filter them out just to save some peace of mind, I might as well just unfollow them entirely. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Looking for a good filter tutorial link. Anyone? - Trevor Childs
Subscribe to Bwana he has some good filter examples. - Jared B. Luther
Yet another person who tells me that, in order to use FF, I need to change my behavior. - Glen Mistletoe
No way I'm following fewer people. The more I follow, the more fun I have here. So far, not too fast for me. We'll see tonight when it hits prime time. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Well, I still have lists and I can pause the updates, so I can use it however I like. It's definitely fun! I'll be using Friendfeed more, I'd wager, with the new interface. I actually feel less inundated, since I have nifty filtering. I'll be able to follow a lot more people! - jojo, adventurer
Jason Goldberg: "The system needs to be smart enough to know." Forget lists and filters. Smart automated recommender systems are the future of social media. Why isn't Friendfeed leading the way? - Sean McBride
Umm no, this is not real life. - Corvida
Since when is it the user's fault when the user interface doesn't work as expected? - Albert Willis
To people who say you should filter more for getting the real life: they should get out of their geek-holes and understand what it is to make choices for real life persons. :p - Ton Zijp
I think the beta is awesome. Looks great on my iPhone in landscape mode. - Steve Sill
i don't agree with the premise that because real time = real life folks should be able to keep up with their interests by scaling down their activity or number of people they happen to follow on a site like this. that's a nice simple thing to write, but it's certainly not practical if you're looking to interact with people on friendfeed. it's sites like these that afford all kinds of info to be exchanged among all kinds of people -- much more than in "real life." if the point of exchanging information lies - Cee Bee
How about having less followers? I don't understand this kind of maths really. If everyone starts following less people just to use a "tool", your own voice won't be noticed. I'll follow everyone I think he/she could bring more knowledge/fun to me and it'll be up to the tool to satisfy my needs, not the opposite - directeur
with a few people what's the point of being on a site like ff? - Cee Bee
There's a live back channel for the Gillmor Gang Leo's streaming right now at http://beta.friendfeed.com/stevegi... - Ken Sheppardson
Indeed, _very_ aggressive "hide" and "unsubscribe" are at least turning FF's "river of shit" UI a bit more palatable. - Dossy Shiobara
Don't make ME fix your problems. If it's too fast, it's too fast, and FF will have to live with the consequences. - Glen Mistletoe
In real-life, I don't have 1000 friends. And Leo, we're not friends in RL, right? - AJ Batac
I asked yesterday how anyone actually kept up with hundreds of people on twitter. Never got a response, so I figure people actually don't. - Barry Biddlecomb from twhirl
People mostly use Twitter as a bullhorn; I doubt that many feeds are being read very carefully. - Sean McBride
or just hit pause. it's not that big of a deal. you just hit refresh like you always have. - Nathan Chase
Agree with Tina. Filtering for topics implies a preset agenda of interests which makes it much less interesting. And if real life was so great more people would live there :-) - Todd Hoff
I didn't even know there are filters. They could make it easier to notice and use like put a filter button there on the page. Or explain that you can do that and how to do it. - Nathan Mylott
It's not a matter of telling you HOW to use something, it's a matter of telling what's available to help you DEAL with data overload. Lists and Filters are there to help consume the data in a manner which is pleasurable. It's not the only way to use FF, but it's something to ADD to your existing way of using the tool to make it better. I realize not everyone uses the tool like I do, but the features I talk about are there to HELP you manage the madness. - Bwana ☠
For example, not everyone uses labels in Gmail to manage their emails. But I've recommended some people use labels to organize the information and it has helped them. For others, it hasn't. The point remains, that labels are there to help with that and they are worth a try to see if it works. It's part of the toolset. Same is true with Lists and Filters on FF. They are there to help you. Give them a try. If they don't work, fine. Plenty of people have found they do work and that's why we say use it - Bwana ☠
Me, I have an "Everything" list so I can see all my followers... but sometimes, I need a break and I move to my other lists or fiilters to munch on those. I spend the most time in the Everything list though. My home feed consists of individuals who I have liked or commented on more than 50 or 60 times.. - Bwana ☠
I'm not sure following fewer is the best idea. The pause button puts the whole site back into static mode, i.e. what the old FF is. So just hit that. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
It's already gotten better, since yesterdays hype slowly went down. I'm quite happy with the (number of) followers now... It's manageable. - Holger Eilhard
Personally I can not see what all the hoopla is about. May be due to not following a hunndred people - Greg
I just started using it, and I love it so far.. I can now see what Leo and Steve were so excited about. - BASEnet
Liberal use of the "Hide" link works wonders to keep things clean. Also, adding ?num=100 to the end of the beta URL keeps things on the first page (thx Stupid Blogger/FFer (aka Tina)!) - Aaron Fowler
...And... Leo haven't commented here after 23 hours. Busy man. Busy man. - AJ Batac
I like how powerful the filtering is. - David Delony

I am amazed at how many smiling faces I saw on the street today. A lot of people have an extra spring in their step today.
I haven't experienced that. In fact, a woman looked at me as I walking into my office building and rolled her eyes. It was unbelievable. - Angel Smith
They probably had sex last night, swept up in the Obama-fication of the World!! Yeah! - Terence
Here in DC there were huge impromptu parties, people cheering, clapping, screaming. This morning I saw a lot of smiling faces too. - Ben Turner

All people here in Germany are moved, touched and happy! The American dream has truly renewed itself! This is a tremendous signal to the world and a sign of hope, for political change and also the intellectual abilities of our time. I wish all Americans dream-fullfilling times ahead and am exited to see what will happen now. - Anina

To my repub friends (mom/dad/sis), nothing but respect for McCain and what he has done for our country, for the rest of us, "yes we did!" :)
Agreed - Justin Yost
McCain's concession felt very genuine if written by him-- not a spin machine. Gracious, humble. Glad his supporters changed tone - Glenn Batuyong
Alex Scoble
I will have little sympathy for Republicans if Obama wins. You've had your run, your time is done. I don't remember you having sympathy for us during the last 8 years while your candidate was ruining this country. Just remember that you are where you are because you let this happen.
Damned straight and amen. - Internet's Tad
Well, them and everyone else in the House and Senate, and the populace at large. I feel the only reason someone didn't raise impeachment proceedings was because they feared Cheney in charge even more. At least W could be a puppet. - xero
Oh Brian, we know how the GOP loves the victimhood game. They'll whine about Obama from day one, the same they did to Clinton, probably find some reason to waste taxpayers money with frivolous lawsuits. - Admiral Anika
Bush set the bar so low, it's impossible for Obama not to step over it. - Alex Scoble
First he has to win, let's let 100 million people vote. Then, if he does, he will have to live up to the expectations for him, and he will fail at that. He promised too much and won't be able to pay for even half without raising taxes on everyone who actually pays some. - Daltonsbriefs
Scoble, if Obama wins, he, and you, will be in my prayers. - ComicList
As Whoppi Goldberg said on the View recently: "Let's be real. Taxes are going up no matter who gets in office." The money has to come from somewhere. I guess they could always just print more money since it's barely worth the paper it's printed on these days. - Give 'Em DBizness
It isn't my fellow Republicans I am worried about... it is the victims of the next USS Cole or Oklahoma City or Khobar Towers or Waco or World Trade Center... that is what worries me - Michael K Pate
@Daryl, Whoopi is an ass. Taxes don't "have" to go up. Spending needs to be cut. Only liberals believe that the only way to fund a new program is to screw the taxpayers even more. I know that "responsible government" has pretty much become an oxymoron, but there are other solutions than tax increases. - Joey Gibson
But Whoopi was right imho. Taxes always go up. Good for her for sayit out loud. - Mathew A. Koeneker from fftogo
It's attitudes like Alex's on both parties that will just keep pushing America down. Y'all will never getting anything done because of party lines. I wish there was a third, more moderate party -- then both of y'all would get screwed. - Shey, Jamaican of FF
What I think would probably be a perfect match would be a liberal president, with a conservative congress - that way they could keep each other in check - The yin and the yang - the balance... i think the concerns of having a Democratic majority in the House, Senate, and the Presidential seat are noteworthy. No one group should have ultimate power. - Nathan Chase
They all do the same every election. Promise more than they ever deliver. - Ian May
teehee..teehee. - Terence
I expect Obama to deliver on at least a portion of his promises. The Bush campaign of 1999 and 2000 were the complete opposite of his dictatorial reign - he didn't deliver on a single one, and reversed course on many of them. While I will have some pity for McCain, who has sunk so low as to be hardly recognizable, I can't say the same for the Republican party in general. - jcunwired
@Nathan but that's not how it works. Balance like that equals filibusters on anything real and then the only stuff that passes is pork and back-patting. Real change requires real ideological stands, not endless "balance" that is only doing nothing at all. - Neal Jansons
Even if Obama wins, it will be fun to see liberals be on the defensive when Obama screws up. Their image of him as a "messiah" will be broken in due time. Also, taxes don't need to go up. Obama wanting to raise taxes during this economy is just stupid. - Spencer
Forgot I liked it and wanted to like it again. - Kamilah Gill
Sorry Spencer...all comments about possible Obama slip ups will be quickly and EFFECTIVELY countered with "you gave us GW!" - Alex Scoble
What if we voted for the other guy (during previous elections) and make an Obama slip up comment? - Jordan Hofker
Well then "you gave us GW!" wouldn't be quite so effective, Jordan. :( Thanks for poking holes in my balloon. - Alex Scoble
in other words, you hate what happened so much you're going to repeat it. FTW! - Glen Mistletoe
Guys. Taxes do have to go up now because spending has skyrocketed in the past eight years and it has been accompanied by massive tax cuts. It's that simple. That behavior has put us in a financial hole. We owe a lot of money to a lot of people. Cutting spending isn't enough because it simply stems the speed at which we continue to dig the hole deeper. We, as a country, need to generate more revenue to pay back the money we owe. This equals a higher tax rate somewhere. - Chieze Okoye
Yeah, the big government past 8 years haven't been so good. I sure would love the next 4 to be about shrinking the government, and its role in our lives. Too bad neither candidate stands for that...I guess it's the closest one. - Trevor Carpenter
@Alex: *pop* *pop* *pop*! :-) - Jordan Hofker
If you think Obama will be a repeat of GW you seriously need to get your head examined. Seriously. - Alex Scoble
Obama can neither raise taxes, nor decrease government in this economy. We'll have to wait for the economy to pick up again before he can truly do either. - Alex Scoble
also, while I don't think that Obama can possibly deliver on every thing he's said he would do, I do like his vision for how to improve the country's outlook for the future. It tells me that even if external forces keep it from happening, his head's in the right place. I personally am sick of the neo-conservative agenda ruining my country (in my view) and would like to see some liberal, progressive minds take control for a while, with a strong social and political mandate to boot. /rant - Chieze Okoye
Alex it is not finished, but just started! All the important decision lie ahead! So save your sympathy for the winners. They will need it in the arduous task fing America! Get to work and stop wet dreaming of The Island in the Sky! - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק

Why such long lines? Is it always like that in the states? - Sasha Kovaliov(.com)
It's *rarely* like this in the states, Sasha. People are pretty excited about this election. - Ladybug Heather
A part of me feels that the long lines have something to do with vote-blockers( people who have never voted, or would have never thought to vote, but have decided to use their civic rights to vote-block the other candidate). The turn out is ridiculous, and reminds of me Gore v. Bush. - Terence

Sushi Masa it was! Next time you're there, I highly recommend the Hana Gozen. $13.95 + $1.25 to get the seaweed salad instead of the chicken wing. Some parents brought their li'l devil in trick or treating tonight, it was cute as could be. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)

Amen. The new "beta" version of Google Reader for iPhone is even better: http://www.google.com/reader/i. Does everything the desktop version does. It's fast. It looks great. It works great on other devices with small screens. I love it. :-) - Josh Bancroft
The only benefit to having a native app would be that they might be able to cut down on the amount of data being sent to the phone. - John Duff
John, I'm sure they could optimize some things, but in my experience, the new beta Google Reader for iPhone does a great job of caching the "infrastructure" parts of the app, the non-content stuff, on the phone. It loads just as fast as a native app, to me. That just leaves the content, which has to come over the wire, regardless of whether you're using a native app or a web app. - Josh Bancroft

Robert Scoble
@joelhousman is right that the Dept. of Energy says that offshore drilling will have little to no impact on gas prices.
There is something to be said for long-term planning, however. Sure, drilling won't affect prices over the next few years, but there's the possibility that it could affect prices after that. In the U.S., business is so driven to make quarterly numbers that it's a struggle to devote resources to long-term planning. - Ontario Emperor
And yet McCain keeps bringing it up because it "appears" to address the shortage problem - Bob Ngu from twhirl
I saw a lobbyist (I think) for big oil two nights ago on CNN who stated that if Exxon broke even instead of $11 billion in profits, the price at the pump would be almost negligible. Yeah, right. - jcunwired
We need to apply long term planning resources to alternative energy initiatives rather than short term stuff - Francine Hardaway from twhirl
... and even if it were so, time to market is 7 to 14 years. But based on known reserves, consumers will enjoy no price benefit as all from new drilling. Our best bet -- while waiting for the maturity of other energy technologies -- is conservation. In fact, it's the only play at all. - Chris Baskind
The profit made at the pump is federally regulated - in other words the whole idea of "windfall profits" as if they are gouging us is not only incorrect but impossible. The federal government makes about double in taxes at the pump as the oil company does in profit. Who is robbing us again? Stirring up class envy against "big oil" isn't anything but politics. - Soulhuntre
And the concept that we should just move in (thanks Nancy Pelosi) and jsut decide to confiscate legally earned profits is about the scariest thing I have heard in a long time. - Soulhuntre
@Chris: What, you expect Americans to quit driving their Tahoes and Escelades? People enjoy that feeling of driving a large tank down the road looking down on everyone else. (Yes, I'm generalizing. No, I don't drive one, I drive a Neon. Yes, I hate large SUVs.) - Jason Shultz from twhirl
The core concept in the US is freedom. If I can afford to drive a SUV, and I want to drive one... then I damn well will. Obviously people will call that selfish or whatever - but the freedom to enjoy our lives is an important one. The additional burden on the energy system is incorporated into my higher feul prices... so there is no issue of fair. - Soulhuntre
Of course drilling tomorrow wont have an affect on the prices you pay the day after. What drilling will do is produce more SUPPLY which will drive down the FUTURE price of a barrel of oil. Oil is a commodities market just like pork, corn, wheat, etc. The price per barrel is a speculated price. As for Exxon's "obscene profits", hey it's their profits. I'm guessing their shareholders are very very grateful. What, exactly, is the maximum amount of money any one person or company is allowed to make anyway? - Dave Madison
While Exxon may have earned $11B in profits, They paid $32B ww in total taxes. So, sounds like the public was benefiting greatly from Exxon's obscene profits. That works out to $3 in taxes to every $1 they made in profit. I don't know about you, but I would be very pissed if every paycheck I got $3 went to the government for every $1 I got to keep. I know there are some that think that's more than fair, though. We usually call those Socialists. - Dave Madison
Finally, once the Capitol Bldg is fitted with Solar Panels and Windmills for power, I'll start taking all this "alternative energy source" talk seriously. Walk the talk. Until then, shut the hell up. - Dave Madison
Dave: there's a lot of hot air in Washington, but not enough wind. As to Solar, there's not enough surface area on the Capitol to generate enough electricity to drive everything. Not to mention that covering one of our national treasures in solar panels just ain't gonna happen. - Robert Scoble
@Dave: Don't forget the White House, Blair House( for visiting dignitaries) and the Old Executive Office Building across the street from the White House. - Roberto Bonini
Oh and the Pentagon - gotta be plenty of roof space there, huh? - Roberto Bonini
Dave, as you said, Exxon paid "32B ww" in taxes, where ww = *worldwide*. Most of that $32B was not U.S. income tax. We can't help it if some foreign countries charge 90% of oil revenues in taxes. It's *their* oil. Also, the difference between my paycheck and Exxon's is that my paycheck doesn't come from the consumption of a finite *public* resource. - Karim
And as for *which* public was "benefiting greatly from Exxon's obscene profits," I point you in the direction of Kuwait, which has free health care, free college education, and 0% income tax for its citizens. And, if you order now, you get free American military support should you ever be invaded by a neighboring dictator. NOW how much would you pay? But wait, there's more...! - Karim
and now barak obama supports drilling... as part of a comprehensive energy package. which is after he was against drilling and now he is for it. will it change more times before the november election? - Jonathan Jesse
The economy is based on the consumer driven "credit economy". Our country's loans from other countries are in the billions. The rich third world countries have bought our debt. The price of our gas pays the interest on these loans. If we started drilling for oil and produced our own gas the economy would fall. One day when the country goes into a depression will they remember the pundit's warnings about the"law of diminishing returns?"-EarlWAllace - earl wallace
Covering the Capitol in solar panels would be an abomination and not effective. Replacing the Capitol power plant with a Nuclear reactor, however, would be cleaner and more efficient. We just need to wait for Robert Byrd to retire - Andrew Feinberg
why do we have to wait? Is that because it can't be named after him until he retires? ;-) - Dave Madison
@Karim, nice exercise in making straw man arguments. But you didn't address the point. The fact that Kuwait has 0% income tax for individuals is irrelevant. I was talking about corporate taxes. And you are right, we can't help it if other countries have more oppressive tax rates than the U.S. Again, that's irrelevant to my point. The fact is, Exxon paid $3 in taxes for every $1 in profit. So, if I were Barry, I'd be careful what I wish for. The federal govt benefits quite nicely.. - Dave Madison
..from Exxon's "obscene profits". The ones that are getting filthy rich off of oil are not the oil companies; direct your ire to the oil traders at investment banks. - Dave Madison
Robert, of course it would be an eyesore. I was being ridiculous to make a point. The Dems seem all too happy to tell people how they should live their lives (just last week Barry's solution to the gas price issue was to tell people to keep their tires properly inflated. If only he'd had on a sweater and was sitting by a fireplace, he could have been the second coming of Jimmy Carter--telling us all what to set our thermosats at). As soon as Stretch Pelosi, outfits her house with solar panels,.... - Dave Madison
@Dave, Its a matter of personal preference. I prefer a planet that can last into the next century, a life for my son that is at the least as good as mine was from the perspective of breathing. While I certainly would like every bit of my government to "walk the walk", I don't allow the decisions of government to influence whether I will do the right thing or not. By the way, Jimmy Carter was right and proper air pressure can do a lot to save $ and the planet. - Brad Nickel
Of course it won't affect gas prices. Big Oil has gotten things where they want them and while we may see small drop backs in price, with leases or other gimmicks, these prices are here to stay. - Warner Crocker
If we start taking our own resources like off-shore drilling, nuclear power, etc., it will send a strong message to the market that we are determined not to rely on foreign sources, then it will have an impact on prices. There is no reason we should not be doing everything to get our own resources, while at the same time looking at alternative means. - Spencer
@ScottBourne We can go back even further, what did the White House do in the 90's to "fix" this problem? What have democrats done to "fix" this problem aside from whining? Gas prices have doubled since the democrats took power, they refuse to do anything but appease the far-left environmentalists which are a big source of this problem. But now we see the Obamessiah is even favoring off-shore drilling, maybe now you guys will see that he will say anything to anybody to get elected. - Spencer
@Dave Madison my point, which was apparently so subtle you missed it, was that you are erroneously conflating $32 billion in taxes Exxon paid *WORLDWIDE* (i.e. including to other governments) with arguments about how "the public" (i.e. the AMERICAN public) and "the government" (i.e. the AMERICAN government) are benefiting from these taxes. You said, quote, "the federal government... more... - Karim
Spencer, you said, "If we start taking our own resources like off-shore drilling, nuclear power, etc., it will send a strong message to the market that we are determined not to rely on foreign sources, then it will have an impact on prices." Just to clarify, I don't think anyone is saying that off-shore drilling will eliminate our dependence on foreign oil, just *maybe* put a dent in... more... - Karim
@Brad. Whether Jimmy Carter was right, or Barry is right about tire pressure is not the point. The point is, we don't need our President, or the govt telling us what temperature to keep our homes at, or how to maintain our cars. As the Leader of the Free World, Carter looked utterly foolish and was a huge embarrassment when he did that. But then, Carter will go down as Worst-President-Ever - Dave Madison
@Karim. And you missed my point. Governments benefit far more from Exxon's "obscene profits", that Exxon's shareholders do. So, it's really quite laughable when people get all up in arms about how much profit Exxon turns. For Barry to want to tack an additional windfall profits tax on "big oil" is ridiculous. - Dave Madison
Earth to ScottBourne. uh...this dependency on foreign oil thing has been around for more than 6 years. That question could just as easily been asked of Clinton's administration, and so on and so on and so on. So your point is really a non-starter. - Dave Madison
ScottBourne, of course oil companies will sell any new oil discovered the highest bidder. You sound like you view that as a bad thing. You do understand the basics of supply and demand though, right? With more oil on the market to be purchased, the lower the ppb will go. So, it's not necessarily about reducing our dependency on foreign oil. It's about driving down the price of a barrel of oil. Once OPEC sees there are other places from which countries can buy oil more cheaply.... - Dave Madison
they will be forced to reduce their prices. It's more about the price being paid, not the source of the oil. Here. this link might help you with the basics http://www.netmba.com/econ... - Dave Madison
Dave, your argument was misleading because you talked about $3 going to "the government" (as if it was one government) and "the federal government" (as if it were OUR Federal government). Now you are finally saying "governments," plural. Once you start to think about how Elbonia deserves to tax you for the profits you made on pumping *their* oil out of *their* country, maybe that $32B tax *worldwide* won't seem like anything to get upset about. - Karim
And the reason that oil and gas prices have been coming down over the past few weeks is.....what? Anybody know? - Michael Markman

Evidence is mounting that installing apps directly on the iPhone is the cause of the bricking. Use iTunes only, even for updates.
Can I take this to mean, evidence of bricking iPhone directly linked to using iPhone as suggested by apple?? - James Fridley
Rubbish installed apps fine just stop putting 50 apps on the phone - Nick Brennan
Evidence is mounting that Apple needs to fix it so that iPhoners can install apps directly on their phones w/o risking bricking. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Is that only with 3G Leo? I am using a jailbroken 1st gen with firmware 2.0 and I am installing many apps directly from the App Store on the phone. No problem as of now. - Dominic Tremblay
This has been my experience as well Leo - Neil Bakker
I'm useing ipod touch with 2.0 and I can't install or upgrade apps from iTunes. - Tony Speer
I'm using the 3G and have install plenty through the App Store and SSH without any issues. - Andrew Trinh
Oddly, my iPhone says there are 4 updates available and my iTunes says I'm up to date - even after syncing. - Renee Pie
I haven't had any issues so far over the air using 3G. Might be specific to a firmware or model type? - James Tenniswood
I've only installed apps via appstore on the iphone and have yet to use iTunes and haven't had a single bricking issue. I've probably installed 50+ apps and god knows how many updates - Grant Gochnauer
Another reason not to buy an iPhone...I'll stick with Windows Mobile phones like my Q9H, it ain't perfect but it works. - David Ward
So much for doing it all on the mobile. Hope everyone is enjoying their public beta release - Jonathan Greene
seriously, that is so lame - Ryan

I am sure there is a lot of commentary you could put to this pic. My only comment is that the world at large must REALLY be tired of the current US Administration if you can get this many people (in another country) to cheer for the possible replacement. - Darrell Bell from twhirl
were the decemberists there too? - scott from twhirl
Ha @ scott. Those Decemberists really are a huge draw. Obama needs to stop riding their coat tails. - Kevin Bondelli
Perhaps he should run for German Chancellor - Ben Jackson from twhirl
Not commenting on BO but seriously does it matter if the Germans like our future president. That's usually a warning sign for me. - Todd Jordan
@kevin bondelli Maybe mccain should show up with Hasselhoff in tow. Those germans love him! - scott from twhirl
but there are Americans, lots of them, that do live overseas who will be voting. - Nathan Eckenrode
Ja wir kann! ;-) - Karim
I think the full size picture is about so many people taking a picture that half of the audience is not able to realize that they are making history by not being aware that they are being photographed too. - Ton Zijp
It's really fascinating to zoom into the large image and see the details. There is an amazing number of cameras in the audience. Plus: above the Angola sign, what is that person doing with the laptop? Is it taking a picture? - John from twhirl
Todd, It's a warning sign that a US presidential candidate is getting a warm welcome from citizens of a long-time ally that we'd managed to alienate to a large degree over the 8 years or so? Why is that? - Erik S
Germans? one would have to wonder what the Obama campaign people are thinking. I understand that it makes sense to stop somewhere on his way back from the mideast, but perhaps a lower key reception would of been in order? This is not going to get him elected in the US. This will cost him a bunch of points. Lets be objective here. I hope he had a great time because he is going to suffer with a hangover from this. - Noah David Simon

Note to tech blogs and PR firms: existing phone models with a new, exciting color isn't newsworthy. Color isn't a tech feature. I'm now boycotting the reading of such "news" and going forward, do solemnly swear to not write about such "news" in the future.
In the end this is true it is not tech news but more of news in the tech world. A quick post about new color features never hurt anyone. I encourage posts of new color changes due to this is how I acquired on of my devices in a different color. - nick

I love my Kindle, but a novel should not cost around $20! Especially when I can get the book from Amazon for much less. :P $20 is too high.
Okay, I don't know what happened between last night and today, but the book I was referring to in this tweet went down in price to $9.17! I am pretty sure I didn't read the wrong price when I first looked up this book on the Kindle store last night. So I'm wondering what happened to make the price drop so suddenly... I even checked the Sony Connect store for the Sony Reader to see if their pricing was better than what I saw on the Kindle store. Then I realized that the price dropped dramatically... What's up with that?? - Cheryl Jones
If I provide a few book titles, can you tweet about them too? I want the prices to drop in half. ;) - Kevin C. Tofel
Sure, I don't mind, especially if your books are similar to what I want to read! - Cheryl Jones

I'm just going to say it: I don't believe in partial feeds, but feed ads are OK. Having partial feeds and feed ads together will get you unsubscribed (or worse). I don't believe in popup or popunder ads. I will stop visiting your site if I get one.
You mean, this isn't common knowledge?? - Yuvi
You would think. - Phil G
ESPECIALLY the pop(up/under)s. I haven't noticed one since I started being on the internet! (Which was with Firefox, btw) - Yuvi
I just dumped 8 feeds from my reader that only gave partial feeds and included ads on those posts. - Moved to Facebook from fftogo
yeah partial feeds are the devil - (jeff)isageek from fftogo
true that. Green Options, one of my fave collections of green blogs only does partial feeds and it drives me nuts when I'm on my phone. - Cat Laine
Regarding partial feeds, you can try this tool: http://labs.echoditto.com/fulltex... .. please read the blog post to get the author's intentions for the tool. - Phil G
Obviously, people are looking for the click through traffic and then visibility to their advertisers ... but it bugs me too (a lot) and I almost never share them unless they're really beneficial. Time to monetize your feeds gang :) - Charlie Anzman
agreed. agreed. agreed. agreed. - Yah, what he said! - Tim Hoeck from NoiseRiver
You know, a few sites (ars digita? slashdot? can't remember) used to give people a choice between a partial-text feed and an ad-supported feed. I'd go ad-supported every time. - Phil G

Yahoo disclosed Saturday night that it had received+rejected a joint proposal from Microsoft+Carl Icahn for search biz.

iPhone App Store is now live in iTunes 7.7.
Left hand side between Audibooks and Radio. There's an ebook reader, Google Mobile and more! - Steve Rubel
not yet here in Italy :) - Kurai (ff) from twhirl
@Jay you can download them but there's no firmware yet. - Steve Rubel
Federico: I can see it. But I don't have an iPod Touch or an Iphone, alas! - Zio Bonino
...odd. iTunes update tells me that I have the current verison (7.6.2.9) - JA Castillo from twhirl
Zio bonino: WTF? it keeps me saying the store is unavailable... - Kurai (ff) from twhirl
@Federico hai aggiornato iTunes alla 7.7? Entra nello store e cerca "App" - Stefano Mainardi
now it's working. Ebook reader only with ebooks sold through the store? Crazy. - Kurai (ff) from twhirl
Current eReader titles / libraries will work with the eReader app. I have five years worth of titles that I've used on Windows / Windows Mobile. They will ALL work with the iPhone app. ;) - Kevin C. Tofel
I am stoked to find eReader in there. May speed up my iPhone purchase. :) - James Kendrick
really? How you upload them? Does it read even pdf books? - Kurai (ff) from twhirl
@Frederico: your library is stored on the Fictionwise server at all times, so you can just download titles you've already purchased. The app will likely have the eReader store so you can browse, buy and DL new titles. That's how it works on WinMo, so I suspect it should generally be the same. - Kevin C. Tofel
Kevin, how do we get (existing, purchased) ebooks on to the device though? Any idea? - John Samuelson
@John, I suspect the eReader app will let you download from your library on the Fictionwise server directly. You can do that on WinMo. I just got confirmation that we have a call with the owner of Fictionwise today so I'll have more info to share. :) - Kevin C. Tofel
@JA Castillo I saw a Twit that said software updater may not recognize the need for the new version if you're running a beta of iTunes. - RyanEs
@RyanEs - no beta...all the more confusing if what you say is true. - JA Castillo
@Kevin thanks. Totally wireless eReader would be awesome. - John Samuelson
Is the App Store only visible to those with iPhones or a Touch? I have updated to 7.7 and there is no link to the app store that I can see. - JA Castillo
@JA - go to prefs, General, make sure Applications is ticked. - John Samuelson

Foxmarks, A Super Easy Way To Sync Firefox Bookmarks - http://feeds.laughingsquid.com/~r...
have been thinking of trying this out, but the only in-browser bookmarks i use are twitter-related, dev-related, or bookmarklets. everything else is at ma.gnolia. - Hillary Hartley
I moved from del.icio.us and the FF plugin to Foxmarks a few weeks ago and haven't missed it. I've never taken advantage of the social features of delicious, and Foxmark makes it easier to use bookmarklets than the delicious plugin did. - Ken Sheppardson
I'm a long time Foxmarks fan. So much of my productivity is in my browser, and having a synced set of bookmarks, no matter what machine I'm on, makes it that much easier to get up and running with the tools I need and am familiar with. - Josh Bancroft
I may need to try this while Weave from Mozilla is still a prototype. - Kevin C. Tofel
Foxmarks is really awesome. Especially for the toolbar shortcuts: http://www.sheysmith.com/2008... - Shey, Jamaican of FF
Del.icio.us and Foxmarks are both handy since you can access your bookmarks from a machine that's not yours. Will Weave allow that? - Ken Sheppardson
have been using the GMarks plugin to sync multiple Firefox machines with my Google Bookmarks, but the updated FoxMarks does look pretty cool... i need to investigate the major differences... - Anthony Citrano
