"Most women don't need a mammogram in their 40s and should get one every two years starting at 50, a government task force said Monday. It's a major reversal that conflicts with the American Cancer Society's long-standing position. Also, the task force said breast self-exams do no good and women shouldn't be taught to do them."

Tell that to my friends with breast cancer. Pshaw.
- Paula W
I know. The timing of this is just a little suspect, too, what with the battle over health insurance reform going on right now.
- vicster is...
I'm torn on this... I had breast cancer at the age of 24. I self-screened, and then had the mammogram and mastectomy. I also was fairly certain that I had one of the BRCA genes, which is why I was hyper aware. I know that there are many women who are deeply scared of breast cancer when their risk is minimal, and maybe these guidelines are for them? But at the same time, I think early mammograms aren't hurting anybody and that self-screening can be effective if people actually do it.

Just sent my 135 f/2 lens back to Canon. This will be the fourth time it's been in for repair for the same autofocus problem. This is getting expensive.
Dang, I remember when you had sent it back the third time. I don't think I've heard of anyone having as many problems with this lens as you have. The heck are you doing to it? =)
- ronin
I think I'm just using it a lot. But it should hold up better than it has in my opinion. It just won't autofocus. I think it's the focus ring because it doesn't manual focus either. It's my favorite lens and I use it to shoot with probably 80% of the time. Hopefully it comes back quick. I may also just have a lemon of a lens. You never know.
- Thomas Hawk
That would be nice John. We'll see. I doubt they do that. I think they like being repaid over and over again to repair it.
- Thomas Hawk
I doubt you're using it too much. You likely don't use it more than a wedding photographer who shoots 2-3 weddings a week using mostly one prime.. It shouldn't give you this problem.
- Ivan Makarov
I wonder if mine has issues, what happens?
- Paula W
for the first year it should be under warranty Paula. But after that it's not. I'd watch it. If you are having any trouble at all close to the end of the first year of ownership you might want to think about sending it in. It costs about $175 every time I have to have it repaired.
- Thomas Hawk
You've almost doubled what you paid for it in the first place, right? That's gotta hurt.
- Almond Dhukka
I sent my 50 1.4 in because the focus stopped working. It works now, but it's not like it was. The ring is sticky, and it doesn't focus as fast. When it dies again, I'm just going to replace it. And take the old one apart.
- Jeremy Brooks
Well damn. I'm finally getting this lens in a couple of weeks. Hopefully yours is an isolated event - never heard of this happening.
- Blake Caldwell
get a Nikon - they just work...wait a sec, maybe that's a Mac...uh...never mind
- johnny action
Blake, it's the best lens I've every used. Even with it's horrible repair record I'm not disappointed I bought it.
- Thomas Hawk
I loved that lens when I rented it. It would really suck to have to send it in multiple times for repair.
- Jordan Hofker
Thomas do you find you have to step back when trying to frame shots with the 135 ? I guess you are used to the focal length now so probably change lenses if you want something wider/closer ?
- David Pascoe
David, exactly, I've got a 14mm, 24mm, 50mm, 100mm macro, and my 135 that are with me whenever I'm shooting. Lots of lens switching but mostly I shoot the 135. Zooming with your feet though is one hassle of primes over zooms and is not always possible.
- Thomas Hawk
Autofocus is your friend dear Liber, remember that.
- Thomas Hawk
my canon 28-135mm hasn't auto focused for about 6 months now. out of warranty. is that what they basically charged you every time you sent it in?
- bluetick
yeah, about that. Manual focus wouldn't work either on my 135 f/2.
- Thomas Hawk
my favorite lens as well, hope you get your fixed
- tomms
th, you ever use a 1.4x extender with the 135mm? would you recommend it?
- tabbr
yeah, I've used it. Don't really like it. But I usually don't need that little bit extra bit of reach. If I do I'd likely use it on my 70-200 f/4.
- Thomas Hawk
Woah, just got my repair quote for the repair on my lens. Canon is repairing it free of charge. That's pretty cool of them.
- Thomas Hawk
Yay, Canon...that's great! I have to say, the 135L was my favorite lens and the one I miss the most and really only got to use it a few months before I sold my Canon gear and went all Leica.
- Susan Dennis
That was nice of Canon to fix it at no charge when it's no longer under warranty. Moves like this win points with the man upstairs.
- tabbr
It was nice of Canon. It was the 4th time it had been in for the same problem. It was nice to see them recognize that and offer to fix it free this time. Normally the warranty on repairs is 6 months.
- Thomas Hawk
i dont like the extender either, ive used the 1.4 and the 2x and it felt like i lost a lot of the sharpness, which is what the 135 is known for. and because im shooting on a crop camera, i get the 1.6 anyway
- tomms
Never heard of a leica lens going in for repair four times. Not even twice.
- Ricardo Liberato
There is a lot of history to this picture. It was taken in Mike Arrington's back yard at the last Techcrunch party to be held in his house. This was a launch party too for our book Naked Conversations. It sounded like a good idea at the time. JD Lasica shot the photo and my wife and dad were within a few feet.
- Robert Scoble
This pic totally reminds me of when SF incumbent mayoral candidate Frank Jordan posed in the shower with two morning shock jocks. Ran on the front page of all the papers. Jordan lost, btw.

Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz is tired of the press trying to dictate what Yahoo should and shouldn't do with its business. But the company's new $100 million ad campaign, which was met with much derision from the press when it launched last month, does not appear to be doing well with consumers.

Is it any surprise that Yahoo's new $100 million marketing campaigns rings false and hollow when their actual company practices of destroying user data without warning stand in direct contrast to the tagline that the new Yahoo is all about you?

$100 million banners that fly in direct opposition to Yahoo's actual practices and attitudes towards their customers unfortunately.

78's - honest. We had a bunch of them when I was a kid. Then 45's on a spindle that played a stack of them into a radio. First 45 was "Rock Around the Clock".
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Vinyl. My first record was the 45 of "Like a Virgin" by Madonna.
- Michelle Martinez
Vinyl. Then 8Tracks. Then Cassettes. Then CDs. Then MP3s. So, I guess i have run the gamut.
- Martha
Vinyl. My first LP was "Kings of the Wild Frontier" by Adam And The Ants and my first single was "House on Fire" by The Boomtown Rats.
- Timothy Griffin
45 => 33 vinyl. First CD in '81 then LaserDisc then SACD and MP3
- Francesco LVDI
33 1/3 Vinyl Albums - my 1st two were Beatles Hard Days Night + the one o them Jumping on the Rooftop in their Beatle Boots?? Twist + Shout?? I just remembered my Grade 4 Teacher wouldn't let me play them during Indoor Recess!! Damn Long-Haired Hooligans from Britain!! ;))
- Billy Warhol
I thought it was tape, but my first system was actually a record player. Wow, I don't feel that old.
- Rob Haas
45 => 33 1/3 => Cassette => CD. my parents had some 78s laying around the house & friends had 8-tracks; I never liked 8-track.
- jbrotherlove
8 track & 45's. I remeber dancing in front of the record shop on St. John's Place and Ralph Ave. in Brooklyn for quarters to purchase new James Brown Records.
- professor daddyo
Cassettes for me. I bought a few vinyl records but not many. I bought loads and loads of CDs but very rare to buy any physical media now.
- Kol Tregaskes
Maybe radio doesn't qualify as a "format"?

People used to sing to me well before I started listening to the radio. Radio was next, and then LP's, but the first music I ever (personally) purchased was "American Pie" (45RPM single)
- Glen, Bespectacled Elder
Well, for all those vinyl lovers, always remember Nick Cages' endorsement from "The Rock": "These sound better."
- Melanie Reed
Actually, now that I think about it, the very first music was probably at church.
- Glen, Bespectacled Elder
Glen, actually, I think it was people singing to me that came first. You're right.
- Melanie Reed
Records and cassettes, though a few years later CDs were the dominant format.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
vinyl first (45s and then LPs) and then cassettes. i gave 8-track a miss.
- Joe Silence is Dr. Teeth!
Cassette and vinyl. Cassettes (and eventually CDs) were more common when I was growing up, but we still had the turntable set up in the dining room and I was a fiend for my dad's records... Stones, Grand Funk, CCR, Skynyrd... it's no surprise I'm still big into classic rock.
- Penguin It's Cold Outside
my first 45 was Tubby The Tuba. my first LP was The Beatles - Rubber Soul. my first cassette was ELO - Time (my second was Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon, so i hope i get some slack for that). my first CD was Rush - Exit...Stage Left.
- Joe Silence is Dr. Teeth!
The first song I remember playing in my room is "All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth" on 45, on a portable record player that had its own speaker. This was in the 1970s, so I guess the song was already 30 years old by the time I heard it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
- Phil G
LP Records, we still have the LPs around here (someplace), many of which are older than I am...
- Grant Bierman
I'm so old... had a childhood record player (vinyl, obviously) and at the time (circa 1960), many 'children's records' were 7-inch 78s! (Golden Books had Golden Records that were bright yellow).
- The Web's Wendell Wittler
Vinyl for me. Not LPs, at least at first; 45s. I still have all the old LPs from my childhood, at least those I haven't replaced with better copies (because I ruined the old ones when I was a kid), plus I've collected 1,000s more! And I listen to them. My next computer-related acquisition, at least after I get a new power supply and video card for my Dell (to run Windows 7), is a USB turntable. Of course, I got rid of the old 45s decades ago...
- Dennis Jernberg
Cassette tape and a Sony Walkman. Yep, I was livin' it up like Fresh Prince. Holler.
- Danny Minick
8-track, i guess. Also reel-to-reel and vinyl were around, but we weren't hifalutin enough to have reel-to-reel.
- j1m
Cassette tape with a Panasonic Mini player / Recorder .... I used to record my favorite song from other tapes using a karaoke double tape player
- Arash Nightwatcher
This depends. If we're talking about the first music I purchased and listened to that would be cassette tape. First music ever listened to period would probably be 8-Tracks and Vinyl.
- Give 'Em DBizness
Vinyl and reel-to-reel tape. Oh and radio

- Kfir Pravda
Kfir: Whatever. I've documented in video where Google Apps Support answers the -phone- when you call them. If you're running "corp" mail with a free account, you should not expect a paid support experience and you won't have access to the phone number of course. Here's the video I did a year ago for example: http://video.seesmic.com/threads... and it's gotten even better since then btw...

Google is taking over the world...one piece of the enterprise at a time.
- Don Martelli
(Just speaking for myself here) It's worth pointing out that Google is *itself* a huge user of Apps, and it works very well for just about everything we do. Sure, there are cases that aren't covered yet -- I suspect some sophisticated spreadsheet users aren't going to have all the features they need, but it seldom matters for day-to-day users. And I suspect the teams are working hard to close those gaps as fast as they can.
- Joel Webber
And from a "cloud security" perspective (one concern I see coming up a lot), it's also worth considering that Google is as susceptible to this issue with its own apps as anyone else, so the company has an extremely strong incentive to get security right.
- Joel Webber
Jay: in recent cases that I've witnessed and documented in my blog, Google apps showed that in some cases they suffer from performance issues. When I published it, I received several comments from others suffering from the same issue, including corp accounts. That's why I mentioned the fact that bouncing emails occur on this platform, and other issues exist, that are not necessarily reported/covered. I am happy that you received great customer service.
- Kfir Pravda
In the "I'd really rather not" category: the dermatologist wants me to have three moles (all of which look small and cute and nonthreatening to me, even as I scan the ABCD rules) removed. Says I should have a plastic surgeon do it. I have the referrals in hand. Do not want to. Sigh. Anyone been down this path? Should I just get it over with?
I had the rather large mole on my chin removed by a dermatologist, and he did a damn fine job, at a much more affordable price than a plastic surgeon... Might be a better solution for you. And no, didn't hurt.
- Paula W
Thanks, Paula--the derm says I clearly don't scar much (even the c-section scar all but disappeared), but wants to ensure that I get the bittiest little scars possible. I just don't know. I keep thinking, "Yeah, well, would she suggest all this if I didn't have such good coverage?" I think I'm getting too close to the healthcare industry, and it's making me suspicious.
- Kathy Fitch
After all, she'll get a referral fee. Sigh.
- Kathy Fitch
I think you are right to be suspicious, though that could also be my suspicious UK based perspective on the US health industry :-O Maybe get a second opinion? And maybe the second derm would do the procedure. Sounds to me like the first one is nervous about their skills in taking these off. Though if they are in a 'tricky' location then a plastic surgeon will probably do a better job...

"The iPhone crowd has turned into an anti-AT&T mob. Spend 30 seconds on Twitter or perform even the most basic search for iPhone and AT&T information and you're sure to run into some serious rancor from disgusted iPhone users across the country. While the exclusive partnership between Cupertino and the Dallas teleco has never been perfect, user hostility has lately been at a fevered pitch. In February of this year, prominent blogger Om Malik announced he was "breaking up" with his iPhone. "I love my iPhone -- but AT&T's network has failed me. Apparently I'm not alone. If you follow me on Twitter, then you know how often I complain about it; my complaints always result in me receiving similar messages of frustration from other iPhone users. A status update on my Facebook page on the topic unleashed a flood of messages from people expressing abhorrence of AT&T's service.""

How is it that there are places in San Francisco where I can literally get no iternet service on my iPhone from AT&T? No 3G, No Edge, No nothing. Or why is it that when driving over the Bay Bridge my wife's 3G phone shows a 3G signal but my newer fancier 3GS phone defaults to Edge in the exact same vehicle? AT&T's service sucks. Having to reboot your phone just to get it to try and get a better signal is frustrating as hell as much as I love my iPhone.
- Thomas Hawk
Because as I've said several times before, AT&T doesn't have the infrastructure in place in most areas. They are still working on upgrading their own and Cingular's old infrastructure. Last year when talking to AT&T engineers, most of them said that they use T-Mobile or Sprint at their main phone. One client tends to switch to whatever carrier he's working for at the time. He's been a contractor for AT&T for a year and is very disappointed. He has no coverage within 30 miles of his house.
- Admiral Anika
One of the biggest WTF moments in telecom was when Apple announced the partnership with AT&T. It wasn't just that the infrastructure wasn't there, it was who won the contract nationwide. Trade magazines predicted users would be upset within the first year because of this, while touting the phone at the same time. Even at the beginning of this year, RCR (now defunct) had articles urging...

But, I will say that I'm kind of shocked that service in the Bay Area is lacking. One person I tried to get work from a couple of years ago said they were doing a huge build-out up there and that SF would be the first major city with full AT&T 3G service.
- Admiral Anika
I lose all AT&T service at my office at least twice a day. That's the main reason I'm not upgrading my first generation iPhone right now. I'm holding out as long as I can in the hope that Apple will open up the phone to other providers.

I haven't had any trouble with my ATT service since switching, but once my contract is up, I very well may go back to T-Mobile. I didn't have any problems with them, and their plans were cheaper, with better customer service.

Verizon will never get the iPhone until Apple decides to change the chip in the phones. Verizon's network runs on the CDMA system rather than the GSM system that AT&T is currently using. So for all of you out there hoping and praying for Verizon to get the iPhone, you might as well wake up from the dream, because I don't see apple changing the chips any time soon or Verizon going to the...

Changing the chip in the phone would not be a big deal in my opinion. Many phones on the verizon network are world phones. Which means they will run on GSM or CDMA why could apple not adopt such a chip and then just make one phone for everyone.
- Zach Scott
I just wonder if AT&T could do anything to improve reception in SF. Why doesn't Apple exert more pressure on AT&T to create a better experience for their customers? It's particularly bad along the waterfront.
- Thomas Hawk
@Zach: many of those phones have dual band chips in them. It has been told that it would only cost Apple an extra 5 cents per phone to have a dual band chip put into the phones, but that would also require Apple to change the production method that they have add in place for the last 3 years. And if I had to guess, it is part of the AT&T / Apple agreement that the phones would not be...

@Thomas: it would probably mean that AT&T would have to put in more towers in the SF area. But if I had to guess, no one want's those towers in their backyard or they would take away from the beauty of the waterfront area so the city won't allow them to put them in.
- Wizetux
More towers sound good to me. I love photographing Towers. The Sutro Tower is one of my favorite things to shoot in SF.
- Thomas Hawk
You have to keep in mind that it's also a long process that includes approval form the the landlord & city. A long process from finding a city to actually building it. We work on a small part of that process and sites are often finally built 6 - 12 mos. *after* we've done our part. One AT&T site (upgrading Cingular stuff) we worked on at the beginning of April first started in July '06. we just got it back because the structure changed. Yes, AT&T is in trouble, even though Apple just reported that iPhone sales were up 600+% in Q3 2009. Clearly, the iPhone mob—made up of a small subset of Twitter's estimated tiny userbase of 10-15 million users—has taken to the streets with pithforks and fires.
- David Chartier
from iPhone
Yeah, it doesn't seem to be stopping a whole lot of people from buying them.
- Bill Kinney
Ugh I'm so tired of hearing how much the AT&T network stinks when the only people I hear complaining is the SF metro area people. :P
- Nate Pilling
Just seems like the big metro areas are echo chambers. :P I'm surprised AT&T doesn't have indestructable networks in place in those areas simply because of that fact.
- Nate Pilling
I live in the Twin Cities and I've never once heard any of my Iphone toting friends complain about the AT&T Network here.
- Bill Kinney

Nate, it does seem repetitive, but it just boggles my mind that I can be in San Francisco, a large tech heavy city and literally get no service. That really sucks. Maybe AT&T needs to think about blanket wifing small highly concentrated urban areas if they can't keep up with the usage and need to take some pressure off their 3G network in heavy use locations.
- Thomas Hawk
I guess it doesn't help that the tech podcasts I listen to are all out of the SF area. I agree, it is very strange, but there are a proportionally large number of iPhone users there, it makes sense. Still, it gets a little old. Plus I'm feeling really grumpy right now, so hey. ;)
- Nate Pilling
I've honestly never had any problems in Orlando. The case for my iPhone (incase power slider) seems to cause some reception issues because of the extra battery, but it's always been snappy, even on edge.

I love my iphone. There were a couple of things that we were disappointed with in the beginning such as downloading pictures I think from another phone or something and they said the app would not be available until August. We did get the 16G and at the time Wal-mart did not have them out on display because they said there were some things that were not ready but we wanted the 16g so it...

Nate - In PA most of the time (all over). Stayed with Verizon and the so-called 'non-smart' (this cracks me up) LG Env Touch because AT&T doesn't come close to the coverage in the areas where I am. Not an iPhone but very cool and social apps built-in with a growing Verizon app store in the offing. AT&T was clearly not ready for this. LG makes a solid product in this space.
- Charlie Anzman
I've been whining about this for well over a year... (and Anika has been offering some great insight into what's really going on - lord knows, AT&T won't admit they have a problem or give any honest info). Here in coastal LA (Venice) I get 3G about 20% of the time; EDGE about 60%; GPRS about 20%. That'd be bad enough even without the crappy call quality/dropped calls, terrible...

Maybe someone needs to map the "no service" areas... at least in the SF area... if there were an iPhone app, this could easily be done by all the users. Save the GPS data, then upload to the map when internet service is restored...

We had a lot of trouble in our old apartment fairly close in Chicago, but it was a solid brick building built around or before the turn of the 20th century. The building itself is practically a dead zone. In our new place in the Jefferson Park neighborhood, AT&T and 3G are stellar. Sometimes it's less about sheer network performance and more about the building materials you're buried under.
- David Chartier
I had HUGE problems with dropped calls in my suburban NJ location. I called AT&T weekly and finally got a callback from their networking department saying my problem was resolved. My bars went up and my number of dropped calls went down to almost none. In fact, I can even get calls in my basement which didn't happen at all before. My advice is to call often until you are satisfied. The squeaky wheel...
- sean808080
I wonder if there is an issue with the newer IPhones and the network. I rarely have an issue with my 1st generation IPhone. AT&T does need to do something to get people happy with our service again.
- ChiliMac
@ChiliMac Anika can probably answer that better, but it's not that complicated: AT&T simply does not have a national 3G network. They are far behind their competitors. Think of it in terms of supply vs. demand. Their core "supply" of 3G bandwidth is lower than probably any of their competitors (especially in big markets). Yet the demand is skyrocketing for several obvious reasons, not the least of which is market penetration of 3G devices such as the iPhone 3G and 3GS.
- Anthony Citrano
AT&T is pretty much the way to go in the middle of America. Verison is so-so and Sprint is about useless.
- Robert Hafer

Robert - I guess it depends on where you live. In the Minneapolis/St Paul area, all three networks are about even, and TMobile's not bad either.

We have Rogers and Fido, which is way better then at&t. Go Canada (sometimes)
- Zachary TG
@Zach, except that we have to pay thru the nose just to get a data plan at all. Ugh. We need another carrier (not just another rebadge like Koodo or a reseller like Virgin) up here to force Telus, Rogers and Bell to fight to the bottom.
- Matt Mastracci
If AT&T was able to support half of the phone that they have on their network it would be different, but I drive 52 miles on the interstate one way every day... and I drop calls at least 4 times on the road... Maybe one day AT&T will have some competition for the iPhone and will have to do something to the network to keep people happy. But if Verizon was to get any type of iPhone I would cancel my AT&T and pay my cancellation fee before the press release from Verizon could get cold.

All taken with a grain of salt since Symantec wants you to use/buy their bloated software. AVG free is fine for most IMHO. "David Taylor, a business psychologist, told workers at design and marketing onebestway, in Newcastle upon Tyne, that a Naked Friday idea would boost their team spirit. He was called in to help the firm after six staff members were forced into taking redundancies at the start of the credit crunch. Mr Taylor told them that, by stripping off their clothes, staff could also strip away inhibitions and talk to each other more openly and honestly. He said: "Inviting an organisation to go naked is the most extreme technique I've used. It may seem weird but it works. It's the ultimate expression of trust in yourself and each other." Despite some initial reluctance, nearly all the staff took off all their clothes – except for one man, who wore a posing pouch, and one of two female workers, who kept on black underwear."

It is also the period in their life when they enjoy the best sex – but the happiness is relatively shortlived.Because by the time they have turned 30 they start worrying about growing old and developing grey hair and wrinkles. There's a ton of information about celiac online (which is what my sister has) and food as related to autistic symptoms, but whether the two lines of symptoms are somehow related remains to be seen. It's really hard to go gluten free when you're getting started (for instance: can't have normal soy sauce) but it can be done.

Putting too much faith in scientists at this point when you start throwing around definitive words like "trigger". At best these things are loosely correlative with zero mechanism posited. @MDV, I won't argue that point. But it doesn't hurt to try. What if gluten *is* the problem. My oldest son does have behavioral issues that could be diet-related. If we don't tell him we've changed his diet and his behavior changes, isn't that enough anecdotal evidence to make the change permanent?
- Jason, Incognito
As for biological proof that my son is autistic, my oldest son is the clinical definition of that. Finding a biomarker is all fine and good, but that doesn't treat the problem.
- Jason, Incognito
But it can be valuable to know it's Autism vs. Aspergers or other similar symptoms with vastly different treatments and outcome expectations, let you know if you need to think about whole life care or not. As far as the diet-induced behavior issues, it could be that without being anything under that austims umbrella at all and by all means should be looked into.

Oh, well, I admit I've been using the broad term "autism". My son is an Aspie. Clinically diagnosed.

Do what you can to make the transition or trial period as normal as possible: you'd be amazing how stressful it can be trying to find GF food on the fly. My sister can't eat out on a whim, can't order the daily special, can't use the condiments provided on the table... GF alternatives like the nut based crackers, corn pasta, and GF baking mix will make it easier to eat like 'normal' people and not feel so deprived. Like the cobblers I made yesterday: those had a GF crust.

I once treated a kid with Asperperger's really badly, at an age where I should have known better. I didn't realize yet the lack of ability to read mood, affect, prying, and personal space - which is a button for me otherwise, so I reacted coldly, not meanly I guess, by most people's definition not mean, but colder than I should have.
- Matthew DeVries
I did Atkins induction phase ages ago for PCOS and felt so much better (if starving), and then moved into phase 2 and got sick again -- took me years to make the gluten connection there. That said, I wouldn't do Atkins again. It was way restrictive for me since I don't like meat (I was eating like a cup of lettuce and 2 tablespoons of sour cream every day or something.)
- Alix Whitmire
Jason, my son was diagnosed with ADHD at 6 years old and we chose not to medicate him. I did not try the gluten-free diet but I know people who have and were successful. We chose to cut out processed and refined sugar and refined carbs. It made a huge difference in his sleeping habits and his ability to focus and concentrate. This was one of the books recommended to me: http://www.amazon.com/Kid-Fri...
- Trish R
Yeah, i just threw Atkins induction out there, because from a novice stand point, you can pick up the book and walk into the grocery store and know everything to buy for week/month, and run a good test. Once you know what you're dealing with, become an expert in where gluten hides.
- Matthew DeVries
Thanks Trish! Yeah, our son was diagnosed just before he turned 4. We haven't ever medicated him either. He's a fairly mild case, but it would be nice if we could improve his moodiness, hyperactivity and concentration.
- Jason, Incognito
Having done Atkins induction on purpose: it's tired and emotionally draining. Thinking about your food is a good think: obsessing about it isn't. There's no real way to do a covert clinical trial with anyone if you're doing induction...

Simple sugars and over-processed foods aren't good for any kid. There's a good argument for more moderation in cakes/cookies/breads/pasta in that they are quick metabolizing, vs. slow-metabolizing foods, and send us into sugar induced highs, that creates a moodswing craziness. Eating slower-releasing foods like whole grains, vegetables, small amounts of protein, etc. and smaller portions- helps our metabolism manage the sugar release.
- anna sauce
Anna, that depends. My sister is a celiac, so even if she has plain rolled oats she gets ill. The gluten in the oats destroys the lining of her intestines, even when it's minimally processed.

@anna, I've been asking my wife to cook more fish, have fewer starches in our diet, etc. She's made some changes for the good, so I can't complain. But being in the South (I know Tina, we're not the "real" South :-P) makes it hard.
- Jason, Incognito
Anna, I'm a big proponent of as unprocessed a diet as possible (at least, within the constraints of other medical conditions). I fail at it often but I always keep it in my mind to try and make better choices. For certain medical conditions (like my sister's celiac or my FIL's diabetes), we make concessions on including processed foods (nut based crackers, Splenda, etc) for an improved emotional quality of life.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Yeah, we made concerted effort to use fewer processed foods over the past few months. We grew our own garden (which the Texas heat has taken from us at this point), we're cooking more meals rather than getting take-out, etc. As for myself, I really just need to get off my lazy ass and exercise, but it's more than that for my son. I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes.
- Jason, Incognito
Anna, I think the "freaking out" is mostly due to researchers finding the Celiac is much more common than once thought, and that there are a lot of people out there undiagnosed because of it. I don't like to label foods good or bad universally, but certain foods for certain individuals really are bad for them. Today's wheat is engineered to have a lot more gluten than yesterday's wheat, and maybe some bodies just can't handle that.
- Alix Whitmire
Alix, while we're talking about whole wheat & white flour- both of which I'm sure we agree are highly processed and very dissimilar to the food they used to be, ha- whey is basically in almost every processed cookie and cake. I think the world is going to realize they have a sensitivity to lactose because they consume the biproduct in every other thing. Oh, and don't get me started on pasteurization of US milk and all of the way our population is f-ed up in that regard.

Anna - they're talking about Celiac disease, a well characterized disease with an identified receptor defect, an identified trigger, and well defined biochemical cascade with known causes, and genetic suscebtibility. - Matthew DeVries
Matthew, in a way you and Anna are both right. Low gluten food still irritates my sister, but not as badly as high gluten food (which results in spewing from both ends...). So yeah, her body can't process gluten properly and it eats away the lining of her intestines. Higher processed flour that has higher gluten content will affect her more. And to that point, people can develop celiac...

And over-exposure to an antigen, especially at an early age, would drive tolerance of the immune system, not hypersensitivity. Allergies arise because the body has paired antigen exposure and cell death and thus set itself up surveillance for that antigen and clears it when seen.

Yeah, kind of our version of Whole Foods. It's a good store. It's just not conveniently located.
- Jason, Incognito
A couple of thoughts on options: buy a bread maker and make that fresh at home (it'll be tastier and cheaper, plus you can buy better ingredients in bulk once every couple of months), and see if there are any local veggie growers that will sell you some of their crop (ditto anyone with some laying hens for eggs). You'll be able to get fresher items for less without traveling the extra distance.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Hey Jason, for children who have autism the younger the diagnosis the better obviously many nutritionists and doctors recommend a gluten free diet. We know of one family who did this with their autistic child and the results were dramatic. We know another child with autism who's had dramatic improvements through speech and behavioral therapy. I don't think they've established a causation between gluten and autism but it can be a factor.
- Steve C

“The way I see it is that Maureen hasn’t chosen to do this job. I have. And I know how taxing it is to endure scrutiny. At no point did she sign up for that, so I like to keep things separate.” Class act. Be up front like that and it is surprising how much the press respects it too.

Big Nothing was one of the worst movies ever made.

Point of fact: Simon Pegg didn't write or produce Big Nothing ;)

Which is a good thing, but just hearing he was in it was enough for me to queue it up on Netflix and omg that is two hours Ican't get back. I implore everyone not to watch.

I love this pic in the grocery aisle. The guy in the back is simultaneously terrified and aroused.

"“Up to now it’s been difficult to provide adequate fashion content to a large-sized customer,” said Jeff Van Sinderen, a retail analyst at B. Riley, a research and investment firm." <-- ain't that the damn truth. I mostly just want to be able to find skirts that don't go down to my ankles.

I find it interesting that clothing for larger women usually means either the same clothing meant for boobless sticks, only bigger, or really loose baggy sacks that they can hide in, often with horrible patterns. Frankly, there are cuts of fabric, choices in pattern and shapes, that will really accentuate a larger woman's best features, and flatter her curves. And larger women often need the fabrics to be doubled, or lined. Which is more expensive in terms of fabric, so many companies just don't do it.

@Paula - totally agree. And even if they do make the clothes most of the time they still have skinny models modeling it (skinny being size 6-8 instead of the standard emaciated size 0) when it should be 14+ sized models to show off the actual fit of the clothes because they have to alter them to fit the skinnier girls. That has always annoyed me. Like "we make clothes for large women but we're too embarrassed to show them on women they actually fit!".

I hate that word, "heavier". Just call me fat, dammit. That's what I am.

You come sit on my lap and I'll call you She-Ra Princess of Power if you like.

I like 'em "heavy". Not boney twigs. Curves FTW!

I can only think that calling a plus-size dress "Maxi" was a mistake.

*snort* LOL! a maxi dress mostly refers to the length, FWIH
