Social Interaction Design... considering unseen elements of system like social relationships, power dynamics, cultural rules
http://www.core77.com/blog...
Many tools have pleasant, user-friendly interfaces and take advantage of well-designed physical devices (i.e., they're easy to use from a human-computer-interaction perspective). But it's in the sociological and anthropological arenas where they run into trouble: most social software tools are clumsy and ineffective at smoothly facilitating interpersonal interaction

"Briefs is a framework for packaging concept screens & control schemes that run live on the iPhone and iPod Touch. This allows you to experience the feel of your concept without the expense of development. Each brief is simply a .plist that references images, in formats such as PNG, GIF and JPEG. Since they are image based, it allows anything from scanned paper sketches, to the full blown mockups you created in your favorite image editor. These briefs are loaded into the Briefs application and can be run directly on the device. Briefs can be loaded manually onto the device or pulled dynamically from a briefcast."

"I contributed to the user interface design chapter in the recent Springer book “Dynamic Taxonomies and Faceted Search – Theory, Practice, and Experience” (online version) edited by Giovanni Maria Sacco and Yannis Tzitzikas. Based on a definition of core principles and challenges, the chapter presents a taxonomy of navigation modes observed in existing applications. On that basis, design patterns for enabling these navigation modes in user interfaces as well as extensions and related approaches are discussed. The chapter closes with a section on personalizing faceted search. The book itself covers a wide range of topics and current research questions related to Dynamic Taxonomies and Faceted Search from an academic point of view."

This is my final project for my intro interaction design class, designed for a surface touch screen. I've never worked with design software, so this project isn't visually where I want it to be, but the concept is there. My next step will be to add some interactive elements to it in flash, including an animation of how searching and tagging work. On the "view: all music" screen, information for Belle & Sebastian appears in the bottom corner because the user has tapped the "Belle & Sebastian" node. There's a lot more I want to add, but I've run out of time, the presentation is today!

http://www.facebook.com/pages... More than just rss, I am trying to use this Fb Page as an aggregate of the conversation, links, videos and thoughts I'm having around UX design & using social media in the context of small & local business.
i had to read that book for my interaction design class at UW Seattle this summer. now i carry a sketchbook with me everywhere. sketching (something i didn't really do before this summer) has definitely changed the way i think about and approach problem solving.

Mozilla Labs Design Challenge focused on finding creative solutions to the question: "Reinventing Tabs in the Browser - How can we create, navigate and manage multiple web sites within the same browser instance?".... There were about 128 submissions- mostly video+mockups and 4 were chosen as winners. The contest is a good preview of how tabs can be reinterpreted and is an indication of Mozilla's strategy to be ahead in the browser game, given that now almost all browsers have Tabs.

GOOG won't let you rank up or down its own content. This is bad in two ways: 1) it doesn't actually allow me to tell them what the most valuable result is; 2) it erodes perception of Google as a reliable and unbiased purveryor of information.

First post: I am curious if anyone has data or thoughts around whether it is better to display abbreviated terms for labels or if it is better to spell out the full label. It seems pretty obvious in the case of design apps for the general public, but what about for internal apps?
If the abbreviations are totally embedded in what people do day to day, does that make a difference? My inclination is that it's always best to show the full label.
