Sorry FriendFeed, But I Agree With Robert Scoble - http://www.sheysmith.com/2009...
FriendFeed
I agree with you that things are incredibly cliquey here, which is an unfortunate side effect of less fresh meat. I think there's a difference between the content of Scoble's point and how he presented that point: Scoble, in many ways, is like a kid in a candy store. He's overstimulated with a constant influx of new tech candy, and it's becomes hard to take his recommendations... more... - Mark Trapp
It doesn't give him a pass to be a jerk about it. It was very disrespectful to everyone in the screenshot he posted. - Rodfather
That's a good distinction Mark. And you hit the nail on the head in terms of one of my main points which is the "less fresh meat". - Shey, Jamaican of FF
See, Shey, you left space for open dialogue. You didn't come in and say it was "sad" and "dead". You just said YOUR usage has changed. You posted the exact opposite of what Robert did. - DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
That's an important distinction too Monique. Thanks - Shey, Jamaican of FF
I agree that things have gotten very cliquey here on FriendFeed. - Itachi
Yeah, I can actually agree with Shey here. It's unfortunate that things have gone in this direction. I'm not afraid of getting jumped on for something I post or a comment I make, but I'm thinking most people are a little more conservative than I. FriendFeed isn't dead, it's just different. I also stand by the comment I have made on various occasions: Your FriendFeed is unique and... more... - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Mark nailed it. +++ - Carlos Ayala
Rahsheen: that's just the rub. Let's say I want to follow all the iPhone app developers. They just aren't here. 90% are over on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Scoblei... Or, say I want to follow the world's geolocation experts. They aren't here (go ahead and check, I did). But they are here: http://twitter.com/Scoblei... Or, say you want to follow tech companies. They aren't here. But they are here: http://twitter.com/Scoblei... -- see, when I joined FriendFeed I had hoped... - Robert Scoble
...that a far more diverse group of folks would show up here (and brands and celebrities) so that I COULD listen to what I wanted and YOU could listen to what YOU wanted and we all could be happy. But, that didn't happen. I'm being a jerk, yes, but mostly it's just grief because it didn't work out the way I thought it would. - Robert Scoble
Well, two things happen in a lifeboat scenario. People get cliquey (bond close together to cope/survive) and people peer into others eyes and wonder if mania or cannibalism is brewing. People are civilized and instinctual, so there is no inevitable outcome, but in the mean time drama ensues. - Micah Wittman
I can exist in more than one place. I can follow the people on Robert's list on Twitter and my friends here on FriendFeed and my family/friends on Facebook. Social Media Maturity means you don't have to have all your sets of friends in the one room for you to remain being friends with them. - Johnny Worthington from iPhone
Shey, I think this title is a little misleading. As others have said here, I think you're saying something very different from what Robert said, or at least in a very different, much more palatable way. I think you're being more specific and not so general (SOME people's experiences here aren't so great. It's not horrible for everyone.) - Kamilah Gill
Unless you just don't care; The clique thing never bothered me, I have two many of my own things going on. - ThatDBD
"clique" implies exclusionary behaviours, and i have yet to witness that in any great quantity here. - Joe Silence is not Santa
If i was robert I would have added all his twitter list accounts to a semi-public room here on friendfeed.... much more useful in here than over there (imho) -- you can use the reply to twitter checkbox when commenting on the entries and when they reply to you it should feed into friendfeed via an ego search.... i do this exactly, but i only follow 64 ppl on twitter and am followed by... more... - Chris Heath
@Kamilah Fair assessment. I agree with Robert's assessment of the forum effect. But we're different users when it comes to Friendfeed and we want to see different things - Shey, Jamaican of FF
I agree that FriendFeed has changed since the FB announcement, but I've been here long enough (and you have too, Shey) to have seen it change several times as people came in and left with various feature changes and overhauls. It will continue to morph into something else again, I'm sure. It's a platform that is suited to a lot of purposes and it changes as the majority of people decide... more... - Fa La La La Lindsay
This also assumes that FriendFeed is used exclusively in English... - Johnny Worthington
At first I thought Friendfeed was a refuge for the chummy crowd. Then I saw Johnny Worthington was here and I knew it couldn't be a clique. Sorted. - Bernie Goldbach
Why cannot FriendFeed be used just as much as everything else. In the social media world, the more points of connection, the better. - Steve Borgman
WOW good post, and comments,+Mark +Chris, Kamillah I agree the title is misleading differing from Scoble as per Mark's comment. And after after the drop from the big sell to FB, albeit Scoble had all the tact of someone yelling "Fire" in a crowded theatre, people listen to him, the criticism still resonates, and the fact is user #s keep dropping. And consequently I find FF myself less interested, signing in less, it's not as "breaking" as it once was, there's less posts/shares/activity, especially re Tech - sofarsoShawn

My 23 year-old sister signs up for Twitter, cancels. "Saw no point in the account."
Screen shot 2009-11-06 at 11.03.33 PM.jpg
From this evening. Another thrilling Friday night. - Louis Gray
So someone in *your* family doesn't grok Twitter either. My brother says he'll never even set up a Twitter account at all; he sees no point either. Apparently these people see the words "What are you doing?" above the text box and think it's nothing but the Facebook status update without Facebook. Some people just don't get it at all... - Dennis Jernberg
In *my* family (asterisks per Dennis), most of them use Facebook. Nobody else uses Twitter at all. - Louis Gray
Sure enough, Facebook is exactly what everybody in my family but me uses, too! Well, I'm on Facebook too, but I don't use it like they do. For one thing, I don't play any of the games; I hide them instead. And none of them has even heard of FriendFeed... - Dennis Jernberg
hahaha that is epic!! Twittter got dissed by Ms Gray :D - Susan Beebe
My family is the same. Twitter is pointless to them. There's so much more than just status updates to them. - Jesse Stay
Well, I don't get Twitter either. Anyone want to explain it to me? - Cristo
It's not fun when you sign up and have no friends / people to interact with...and all the interesting people only talk to each other. All my friends didn't "see a point" until they built their own network(s). Just sayin' - Mona Nomura
My wife is also that way, btw - I may *just* be able to get her to join FourSquare though. - Jesse Stay
Social media circle jerk. - Cristo
As if Twitter is some brilliant thing that only a certain so-called tech crowd gets. - Cristo
My sister has known that I've used Twitter for several years now. Whenever I brought it up, that was her reaction, "Don't get it. Don't see the point." She created an account a month or so ago and she's totally into it now. When I asked her what made the difference, she shrugged and said she wasn't sure. "Your friends started using it, didn't they?" I asked her. "Yes." heh. :D - pea
Why don't you guys go have this conversation on Twitter? :) - Cristo
Pfff. Cristo, you know full well twitter can't deal with the c word. :) - Micah Wittman
I will make the bold prediction that most of my brothers and sisters will never join or use Twitter. I have one brother that does, occasionally, but the rest will never, ever use it. There's no point when they can get the same thing from Facebook and more. - Jesse Stay
Mona - nailed it! :) - Susan Beebe
Re Mona: I myself didn't even bother to sign up for Twitter till this last June, when I discovered an existing online songwriting community I belong to had a Twitter presence. That's when I set up my account and started to use Twitter. Then I found that some of the NaNoWriMo offshoots I take part in also had a Twitter presence. That was the beginning. Since then I've built up a much... more... - Dennis Jernberg
my girlfriend has no interest in it either. she uses facebook for all her net communication needs and is quite happy... - Terry O'Fee
I got all my friends to sign up for Twitter, all found it pointless. So, I really don't get the point either. I'll delete mine too. :D - Faraz Mullick
This is why I am on most social networks. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Only a few of my real-life friends are even on Facebook, and the ones that are rarely update. The social web can be pretty disappointing sometimes. - Michael Slattery from iPhone
Most everyone I know is on Facebook now, with a few exceptions that refuse to use much of anything on the internet except for youtube and blogs. Nobody gets the point of twitter, especially with facebook/friendfeed offering the same type of communication options, if not more. However, the nice thing about twitter/friendfeed is that it's searchable. The other day I was watching the events from Fort Hood unfold on twitter. I couldn't do that easily on facebook. That's where twitter shines. - Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
My Second Life avatar started on Twitter in the good old days, when everyone you followed followed you back. But my real life account has about 20 followers, so it only really works as a reader - and that rocks. - Michael Slattery from iPhone
second life.. i read books like snow crash, get excited and find SL nothing like it ;) - Terry O'Fee
If new users have no followers and fail to get the reader part, of course they stop. And the statistics confirm that. - Michael Slattery from iPhone
I do agree. It is really difficult to convince someone to use twitter. And even if I do, they don't stay active on the service. They too state "I don't see any point in the service". Often are the times when they are convincing me it is nothing but a blog platform with 140 characters limit. - Amit
I've learned that it's not a good idea to try to convince friends to join Twitter. Unless they get it, they will simply annoy you with Facebook style Tweets. Better to seek out Twitter users who have learned the knack of posting interesting Tweets. - Jimmy Walker
If she doesn't get it, or anyone else for that matter, be glad they're on their way. Twitter never worked for me either and I'm happily not participating as well. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I just realized I've been forgetting to tell them to start by following interesting people and not even think about posting their own tweets for the first little while (Robert's advice) - I wonder if that would make more of a difference. - MaryB, BrandingBroadOfFF from iPhone
My 25 year old brother said the same thing. - Rochelle
My family is a Facebook family as well. - Trish R
+Mona I think there is a follower critical mass that needs to be achieved (of real interacting/interesting people) before anyone 'gets' Twitter - JSNFLMNG from iPod
She's ahead of the curve. Take note. - EBrewer
I see Twitter as another information portal, and a social channel (albeit limited). For those things it's great. I don't use facebook all that much, but it's good to chat with old friends to say howdy and share current happenings. I'm me no matter what social hub I'm on, but the local laws/rules/community etiquette fits my preferences better in some virtual hangouts. - Mark Essel from iPhone
My daughter of about the same age also got and shortly thereafter canceled a twitter account. - SuezanneC Baskerville
Twitter is useful as a minimalist news broadcasting system. Twitter is worse than useless as a medium for conversation. I mostly use Twitter in combination with Topsy searches to pluck off the most interesting news stories of the day on selected topics. Without Topsy, I would stop using Twitter entirely because of the information overload. - Sean McBride
Mona's point is pretty much spot on. I kind of "imported" a Revision 3 forum network into Twitter, which led to FriendFeed, which had sort of a recursive bend back into Twitter, which led to finding Twitter recommendations, which then opened me up to following people from IRL, and then...ah crap. I've stopped using Twitter as much, though, because Facebook is where the people I CARE about really are. And in case you're wondering, I'm friends with Mona on Facebook ;) - Mike Nayyar
I've hit a wall trying to get my friends to sign up for Twitter. It's like they've got an image issue. Whenever I try to explain it's value for news and as RSS replacement, people sort of stop listening. They're left thinking it's Facebook without the "fun stuff," which is lesser and redundant for them. - Jeremiah Green
Is it fair to say that the tweets related to tech news that some folks think are so wonderful and important are primarily links to web sites, blogs, new articles, and so on produced by someone other than the tweeter? So far as I've seen, subscribing to, say, all the employees of a company doesn't produce much news about the company; instead you see posts about where the employees ate lunch and stuff like that. Of course I may just not be looking at the right people. - SuezanneC Baskerville
Unless you have a defined business strategy, there really is not much point to Twitter, unless you just want to connect for fun, which is under my business strategy :) - Steve Borgman

SuezanneC has summed twitter up quite well. None of my family use twitter, took me ages to 'get it' but although my family all use Facebook, I don't like it. I stay to keep in touch with them. - Sandra Large
It is very hard to keep motivated with all the bots, spam, ads, slaves and etc. Don't feel bad if you make mistakes because this is a new thing that is evolving underneath the feet of everyone on it. "Yes, I still would have deleted everyone. Following back automatically is incredibly lame and shallow. It is NOT a matter of respect. I don't feel any better when someone autofollows me back. It totally messes up your account, too, and invites spammers into your DMs. I don't get spam anymore. I used to get tons of it. And now you've revealed yourself as two-faced anyways. I'd rather people just be honest with me and say "no, I'm not interested in what you write." Adopting Twitter for news reading is a huge commitment to read instantly all news (bc they don't archive, right?). It's insane ... But yes gReader is too heavy. - N.G. Gordon - RadarSync from iPod
I just don't understand how you process all those tweets per day. I'm sure lists make it easier. Personally, I like the static nature of Google Reader because I can quickly scan folders by date-time or feed and then mark things with a star if I want to read them later, quick notes on shared items, etc. And of course all the shared stories post here on FriendFeed then Twitter. Normally I keep FF up all day but just began with threadsy and I confess it's got me looking at my Twitter stream MUCH more. - Ankush Narula

funny... cause i still read your blogs in reader... its got its place... tracking rss feeds from youtube, photography sites etc etc etc... if people want to follow what you write, you should not have to write your blog AND post the link to twitter... redundant! and will make twitter even noiser! why not let people pull at their leisure... the two things are for different times of the... more... - simran

Robert, my favourite news reader, NetNewsWire started using Google Reader for synchronization and it's a failure. I now get most of my news via FriendFeed and Twitter. - Khürt Williams
I agree on that you about iPhone Greader apps, most of them suck in someway or another: too slow, missing feature ect. "RSS" is best that I have tested, it was free for sometime and I like it most that I have try, but still more I want use Greader iPhone site. Re Point 8. Check out "RSS Flash G" iPhone GoogleReader App. It lets you share, from iPhone, like a good thing, supports FaceBook, Twitter, Delicious, Instapaper and of course all googlereader sharing facilities are there too. These are two entirely different methods of discovery they both have their uses. But sharing from GoogleReader on the iPhone is EASY so I hope that takes care of point number 8. - JSLeFanu
ffcode: actually on Twitter I miss very little. Why? Retweets and repetition. And, we always have TechMeme as the big net! - Robert Scoble
I just got Lists so i haven't had a chance to really get to grips with it, but I think the problem Robert is that you're trying to apply your usage cases to everyone else. I use Reader in a different way to the way I use Twitter. Just like I use FriendFeed differently to Twitter or Reader. - Eoghann Irving
I guess if you are recycling tweets don't need GReader, if you are munging petabytes via Yahoo Pipes, than GReader will pull stuff fresh off the press - Robert Higgins
Eoghann: over and over in my career I've been told that I'm not like everyone else, but then everyone else behaves like me only about a year later. So, see ya next year! - Robert Scoble
Robert: ahh, yeah, I guess Yahoo Pipes is one thing that might keep me on Google Reader -- if I used it. I'm going to delete everyone on my Google Reader account and start over. It's so freaking slow that it's totally useless, even for the few things I could see some utility for. - Robert Scoble
Robert, it doesn't *always* happen like that. Sometimes it's two years. :-) - Bruce Lewis
Robert, that's a silly argument. If you make enough predictions (and you make them daily). You will of course sometimes be right. But you are not always right. FriendFeed? - Eoghann Irving
Eoghann: I was right about FriendFeed. It's just that Twitter and Facebook are now going to turn into FriendFeed. Just watch. Twitter's new RT feature looks a LOT like FriendFeed's likes. - Robert Scoble
Eoghann: but I get where you're going. By the way, 50,000+ followed me here. So, something about FriendFeed was interesting enough to sign into it. - Robert Scoble
well, you certainly helped make it interesting. But at first, I didn't really understand it's value proposition vis-a-vis Facebook. And now, with things like ping.fm, is it's value really that much? Not sure - I mainly use it for the tray functionality so I can keep up with you, Mrinal, and Danny. Otherwise, I'd completely get behind your posts. - Arthur Coleman
Arthur: FriendFeed's value is static, while the others are rolling out new features. So, for me, it's better to bet on Facebook or Twitter. But FriendFeed will be better for things like live conversations or real time search for quite some time. - Robert Scoble
I love FriendFeed. But I don't recommend it to everyone else. For a lot of my offline friends Facebook is a better fit. Again I come back to the fact it's not one size fits all. - Eoghann Irving
I prefer accessing Google Reader via feedly. - Nils Sandin
Well I tend to miss many important things on twitter.. not my fault. .. time zones differ and so do the times articles are published and linked on twitter ... On my google reader they always stay .. i can check them when i want .. so twitter better than GR? .. yes for breaking news .. not for general articles .. - Amit
Amit: on Twitter they always stay too. It's just that Twitter has a lot more flow. But now with lists you can cut down the flow. - Robert Scoble
Robert: I agree they stay. but it is not difficult to lose them in all the tweet flow. i know lists allows you to cut down the flow, but not if lists has many twitters added to it. I want to read what you write more than what you share and I do not want to miss those articles. Google Reader will always remain my first preference for that.. - Amit
Google Reader certainly is trying to become more social, but for me too the experience is an awful lot like keeping up with email - needs daily management, pruning, to get information out of it. I freak out thinking I've missed an article, therefore dread trying to keep up with reader. I get that using Twitter makes news reading about the here and now, and frankly if it's important it will be tweeted for days to come. I think the notion of getting news from Twitter is a good one, particularly with lists. - Mark Aitken
And for the record, I'm keeping off Wave until it feels less like email too. Currently it's a very messy and exhausting experience to use. - Mark Aitken
Twitter with Lists has become my defacto RSS reader. - Rubin
