"An aide to the First Lady, wearing a radio on the back of her dress, watches as President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife, Mrs Gursharan Kaur, greet guests in the Blue Room of the White House at the State Dinner, Nov. 24, 2009."

That's quite the earpiece -- is that 'aide' with airquotes?
- sara
Nope-- but I have read a lot about earthships (and other 'handmade' building techniques). Did you go inside any? What did you think-- ready to grab some tires and go off grid?
- sara
I went inside the 'visitor center' which is itself and earthship. It was pretty impressive. I also spent some time doing mud plasterwork at the zen refugue, so yes - I was quite inspired, although it's probably easier in NM than in the Bay Area.

Under the Obama healthcare plan, as I understand it, it will be illegal not to buy health insurance. Am I right about this, and if so does anyone have any idea what the requirements for a service to qualify as 'health insurance' will be?
Yep, that's what I understand-- it's been likened to auto insurance by the administration (although there are some reasonable arguments that that's not quite an apt comparison). As far as I can gather, they (the White House or Congress) have yet to come to an agreement (or make public any ideas) on what a minimum or 'basic' plan would look like. It seems like one of those things that...

I feel like this article in the Atlantic (http://www.theatlantic.com/doc...) provides an interesting perspective in the debate. It basically argues that "health insurance is different from every other type of insurance. Health insurance is the primary payment mechanism not just for expenses that are unexpected and large, but for nearly all health-care expenses. We’ve...

For sure. I mean it seems to me that being forced to pay for health insurance from one of the current suppliers will *reduce* my ability to remain healthy by taking away money I could be spending on preventative practices, and forcing me into a relationship with corporations which are thought by a majority to be unethical. It's one thing to compel people to spend some amount of money on wellness - it's another thing entirely to force us to spend money on a known-bad system.

I wish Mr Obama would make it very clear how this stuff is supposed to actually work - in detail. Right now I can only see it making things worse, but maybe that's because of a lack of any real information.
- Robin Barooah
Yeah, that would be nice. Unfortunately, this whole policy debate feels like a game of political chicken where the first person to introduce actual, functional details into a public press release loses (because it give fodder to their political opponents).
- sara
It's unlikely to actually happen. A lot of people are now saying it would be unconstitutional.

It's properly known as the Letterman Digital Arts Center. Apparently if you go during the work week (we didn't), they'll let you into the lobby of the building behind Yoda where you can visit with a life-size Vader and Boba Fett.

I didn't want to go into that lobby though. I've heard it's a trap.

"Eric Bruntlett caught the ball, landed on second base in perfect stride and spun around to tag a bewildered Daniel Murphy. Murphy had a look on his face that said, "No way. Did that really just happen?" It had. Bruntlett had turned an unassisted triple play to end a 9-7 victory over the Mets at Citi Field on Sunday afternoon."

Is the parrot Facebook and the cat Friendfeed?
- Shakeel Mahate
Well . . . it is a 'Love Bird.' Although, I can say from personal experience that these birds can bite pretty hard for such a small parrot. In the event of a disagreement, my money would be on the green guy.

“Spending an idle morning watching people look at art is hardly a scientific experiment, but it rekindles a perennial question: What exactly are we looking for when we roam as tourists around museums?”

I went to the SFMoma yesterday. There was no art in sight, but we did get to spend an our hour so being jostled by crowds of people, many of whom were playing with cameras. I think there were some nice pictures on the walls, but it wasn't easy to see.

Hah! I did think of him. If he'd been there yesterday they'd never have even noticed him, let alone caught him and thrown him out.

I feel like one of the great gifts that art school gave me was the ability to be conscious of 'looking.' This article makes me want to take a 'looking' vacation. Maybe travel would be useful-- but I could see it being a travel in a very local, small, way too -- just slowing down and perhaps spending some time drawing to keep me focused.

I'm used to being one of the slowest people in any gallery. There are slower people though, especially in the Louvre, have you ever watched the painters who are copying the masters? Quite a bit slower than anything I've ever done in a gallery.
