Adobe announces first hardware, the Project Mighty smart stylus and Napoleon ruler | The Verge
"Adobe has just announced its first hardware initiative, a pressure sensitive stylus and an electronic ruler that will tightly integrate with its software applications. The company's Project Mighty stylus and Napoleon ruler have been showcased connecting to an iPad and iPhone over Bluetooth. The pen works much like existing styli, but when working alongside Napoleon, the two tools can be used to create curved and angled shapes in a way that would be difficult to do with a third-party stylus. So far, the tools have only been demonstrated working with an unreleased app, which Adobe told us was created specifically for the hardware. Both Project Mighty and Napoleon appear to be small, simple pieces with an aesthetic reminiscent of the white and silver of early iPod models. The stylus has a single button, and the ruler is marked with a series of shapes that can be switched between to alter how the pen is drawing. On the iPad, Napoleon displays lines on the screen which a user can trace,... more... - Spidra Webster from Bookmarklet

Apple iPhone converted for use as a microscope - Telegraph
"Scientists attached a £5 lens to the Apple iPhone using double-sized tape and, with the addition of a torch, were able to use the phone to detect intestinal worm infections in schoolchildren in rural Tanzania. Pictures of stool samples were taken with the phone and studied for the presence of eggs – the main sign of the parasite. When the results were compared with a laboratory microscope, the iPhone pictures picked up 70 per cent of the infections. The study was published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Dr Isaac Bogoch, specialist in internal medicine at Toronto General Hospital, said he had read about trial of smartphone microscopes in laboratories and wanted to “recreate it in a real world setting”. "Got a great song in your head but don’t have time to make sheet music? The new ScoreCleaner Notes app will let you sing, play an instrument or even whistle the song and the app will translate your song into musical notation. Our sibling blog Social Times has more, including a cello test of the software: After 20 years of research on music cognition, folk musician Sven Ahlbäck, who teaches at the The Royal College of Music in Stockholm, and bass player Sven Emtell, who studied computer science at The Royal Academy of Technology, have built a practical tool for songwriting. The DoReMIR Music Research team currently sells the ScoreCleaner Notes music notation app for $0.99 in the App Store." - Spidra Webster from Bookmarklet

CDC app lets you solve disease outbreaks at home
"AP)—You may not be a disease detective, but now you can play one at home. The nation's public health agency has released a free app for the iPad called "Solve the Outbreak." It allows users to run through fictional outbreaks and make decisions: Do you quarantine the village? Talk to people who are sick? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the app was designed in-house and wouldn't give an estimate for development costs. The agency says it is using social media to educate the public about diseases and to promote an appreciation for public health work. The app went live this week. Music performance apps for the iPad | Glen Campbell
"The iPad is a marvelous tool for musicians. There’s a huge quantity of apps for performers; unfortunately, they’re all mixed in with apps for playing music, so they can be hard to find. This is my personal list of favorite musical tools. These are the ones that I use often, once a day at least or more. forScore by MSG Development. This app lets you display PDF files. I use it for holding the chord charts that we use in my church music group. It can access files stored in Dropbox and it lets you annotate those documents. For example, if we decide we need to use a capo on a song, I can write that on the chord chart and it will show up the next time I view it. In addition, it lets me resize and crop documents so that they’re easier to read. AudioBus by A Tasty Pixel. This app is nothing short of miraculous. It lets you link together the audio inputs and outputs of other compliant apps into a seamless whole. Question about buying Kindle books for iOS: I once bought an ebook from Amazon but once I downloaded it, I couldn't read it offline. The software was telling me I had to have a net connection. I tend to read ebooks when I *don't* have wifi nearby. I called Amazon customer service & they confirmed that it needed net access. So I returned the book.
But people have since told me that that was wrong, that you *don't* need net access to read a Kindle book. Which is it? Is it that you initially need a net connection just so the book can "call home"? - Spidra Webster
Yeah, I figured you need net access to download it. :) I was referring to afterwards. The Amazon CS I talked to said I was right in interpreting the error message to mean that I always had to have wifi access to read the Kindle book I downloaded. I suppose the safest way for me to test would be to find a free Kindle book on Amazon... - Spidra Webster
Thanks. I'll give it a shot. - Spidra Webster
I've been able to read my Kindle books on my iPad without wifi. - Anne Bouey
I've never needed internet access to read any books after the initial download and I've downloaded many books for the Kindle app (free, library loans, purchased) for here and my flight and stay in London. - joey 2.0
The only restrictions on internet/downloading I've seen have been from the library books I've downloaded, since they have some restrictions on how you get it to the device (of which there are several variations, for the most added confusion.) Some of those did require that Wi-Fi be on. - Jennifer Dittrich

Verizon’s iPhone 5 Math: Using The Same Amount Of Data Faster Counts As More Data – The Consumerist
"We keep hearing about a wi-fi bug that leads to iPhone 5 owners racking up huge data bills when they thought they weren’t on the mobile data network. When Matt contacted Verizon about it, the ever-helpful customer service representative told him that it was just because the iPhone 5 is a 4G LTE device. This is probably the cause of many data complaints that new smartphone users have, but isn’t the case for Matt. He says that he hasn’t changed his browsing habits: using the same amount of data in a shorter amount of time doesn’t mean that he uses more data. At least, not according to the math that everyone except Verizon uses. I just got off of the phone with Verizon customer service having called them because my iPhone 5 data usage in the first 22 days of the month is way over my highest ever full month usage on the iPhone 4s. They tried to give me the “since its 4g it uses more data quicker” nonsense. I said you still have to use the data and I haven’t changed my habits a bit. Apple Maps discloses location of classified Taiwan military base | Ubergizmo
"Here’s a bad morning if you’re a Taiwanese general: you open your morning newspaper, and you find a map of your brand new TOP SECRET $1.2 billion radar facility. Even worse, the map is a screenshot of Apple’s new iOS mapping software, which means there are millions of people with access to satellite images of a classified military facility. And it’s not like the facility is a minor, unimportant building. According to PhysOrg: The Hsinchu base houses a cutting-edge long-range radar procured from the United States in 2003. Construction of the radar is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The ultra-high-frequency radar, supplied by US defence group Raytheon, is capable of detecting missiles launched as far away as Xinjiang in China’s northwest, military officials say. They say the radar, which cost $1.23 billion, is designed to give Taiwan minutes of extra warning in case of a Chinese missile attack. Well, one thing’s for sure: If China didn’t know where the facility was... more... - Spidra Webster from Bookmarklet
