Fwd: We just launched Appsfire (for mac only for now) A new iPhone service that allow you to share easily iPhone apps with your friends. Try it on http://appsfire.com (1000 first arrived first served) (via http://friendfeed.com/applero...)
Couple questions: why does it need to install as a service rather than just a standard app? Why does Firefox not like your site's security certificate?
- Patrick Jordan
Exactly Patrick. Kind of scared me away as well. That, along with the lack of any clear explanation about what I was getting into, sealed the 'no deal' for me.
- Dan Dashnaw
Downloaded it too although I'm not sure of it's utility, meaning I'm not sure exactly what it does. Is it actual app sharing or is it designed to simply tell people what apps you're using? Some clarity would be helpful as would some comfort about security and privacy. thanks.
- David Hall
via BuddyFeed
Has anyone tried this out since? I've been holding off until some of the questions above are addressed.
- David Hall
via BuddyFeed
I installed, did one test list to share here, saw it was a service and saw Firefox certificate error, asked questions here, saw no answers, uninstalled for now.
- Patrick Jordan
Hi All, it is not possible to just list your purchased iPhone app without a third party program that does that. We ll soon have a native iPhone app in complement but still you ll need to install the app on your computer (it is a one time set up).
- Ouriel Ohayon
We had an issue with the security certificate (that protects your data). Now solved. Let us know if any issue (contact at appsfire dot com)
- Ouriel Ohayon
Re: Utility. The main purpose, today of appsfire, is to help users (and pubilshers) create and share simply their favorite iPhone apps. instead of manually doing the job, specially when you are asked for a recommendation, you can just point them to a link and also help your friends install faster the apps (they just have to click). Soon we ll allow users to make money out of this by sharing revenues with any app purchased via Appsfire
- Ouriel Ohayon
@ Ouriel - why does the app need to be installed as / run as a service? If I want it to re-check my set of apps, I'll ask it to. I don't feel a need for it to continually be running, and do not like the concept of that either.
- Patrick Jordan
@patrick you are in control. if you don't want an automatic update, just uncheck the box in the preference pane and when you want go there and rescan. We really focused on giving 100% to users
- Ouriel Ohayon
@ Ouriel - I noticed the checkbox to turn off automatic updating. That's fine, but that wasn't my question. My question was why does it need to run as a service, especially if I do not want auto-updates? Why does it not just install as a normal app, that I launch when I want to look at sharing iPhone apps?
- Patrick Jordan
"Camera and music applications aside, the iPhone and iPod touch hold a lot of potential for creative users. Today, we look at another well-represented genre of creative tools: 15 different drawing and painting applications, ranging in price from free to $6. While they vary in utility and execution, and most are useful only for casual doodling, each allows the user to create art using nothing but the touchscreen and a finger. Some of the programs even offer intriguingly broad sets of tools and novel features such as wireless collaboration."

499 - 32GB - 1or2months left under original contact - #3GSCostAnalysis#iPhone#Apple#ATT Although "As a valued AT&T customer, AT&T can offer you an early iPhone upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. You may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade on 06/18/2009" was the messaged displayed to me on the 'Review iPhone pricing' page.
- Walt Ruppar
$299 plus $18 upgrade fee for a 32 GB iPhone 3 G S, replacing a first-gen iPhone where the original two year contract was nearly complete (I activated on September of 2007). I was also offered an 8GB 3G at $99 or a 16 GB 3 G S for $199. "As an existing customer, you qualify for the following iPhone pricing: You'll be able to choose the iPhone you want a little later in the process."
- Stephen Mack
Thanks for sharing. Now that is sounding more like it! For anyone else finding themselves here, this is a sharing thread, not a hate thread. My goal is to help keep the corporate greed to a minimum and to help shed some light on the question of: "Who gets which price-point?" since it seems to be abundantly clear that the answer is anything but clear...

Got an original iPhone on Day 1, re-upped for the 3G on Day 1 as well. I'm getting the second tier $399/499 for 16/32GB, with a note that I can am eligible for best pricing on October 21.
- David Chartier
Day 1 buyer for both iPhone and IPhone 3G. Got the 399/499 for 16/32 with better deal sometime in December. Go figure.
- Andrew Leyden
Bought both iPhone and 3G on Day 1. Also got 399/499 for 16/32 with better deal after 12/12/09. Preordered 32GB at 499 anyway. Sold 3G for $350 since wife doesn't like nor need smartphones. So will wind up paying $200 (counting tax & fees) for the new 32GB 3G[S].
- ronin
If my 3G[s] is "Ships: Delivers by June 19th" according to #apple store order status and when I reserved I was told I "may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade on 06/18/2009", I wonder when I should call Apple to investigate? Just thinking out loud here, but if I'm only reserving a product that won't ship until the day my contract is up, shouldn't I be provided a standard upgrade...

@Walt - Let me know if you call Apple. I Pre-Orderd my iPhone and it hasn't switched nor have I gotten an email verifying my purchase in queue. I purchased the $299 White 32G and I want to know if I will get it on Tuesday or if (like At&T) they'll send it later - after my contract ends. =(
- Aaron M. Clay
Calling tomorrow so there is only one day left under contract. Honestly, I'm not even looking for a one-day early deal... Holding off on the charge/ship until contract is up would be fine for me and save me a couple hundred bucks...
- Walt Ruppar
I was just about to call and figured I'd have a look on the inter-webs first. Guess I know what the answer will be... "AT&T gives in: anyone who bought iPhone 3G in Sept 2008 or earlier gets $199/299 pricing on 3G S: http://bit.ly/8IubE" Hmm.. tempted to just see if the price reduction happens auto-magically, but for $200 bucks, I'm gonna call!
- Walt Ruppar
As far as I understand it's the full rebate for anybody who would eligible for it in July, August or September, whoever this could be. I bought my 3G on July 18th and apparently I'm eligible for an upgrade in December. This also means that iPhone 3G in general is not eligible as it was releases in July 11.
- Oliver Bouchard
This just in straight from #Apple Customer Care: Apple is reviewing each order for rebate eligilbility and will contact you if you are. Check your email. Even though I am eligable with a 6/18 contract end date, I stll must wait to be contacted too. Took me 45 min on hold to learn, so I figured I'd save some folks some elevator music...
- Walt Ruppar
Yes, but my contract is still from my 2G. I upgraded to the 3G via a craigslist purchase and just swapping my sim. AT&T caught up to me within a month or two for the extra 3g monthly data charge, but my contract end date stated the same. Also, I made it a family plan by adding a krazor a few months ago and still no change in contract end date.
- Walt Ruppar
Ummm... While I am extremely excited to have a FedEx tracking id, it would seem that I am still paying 499/32GB, as of now at least, even though Apple told me otherwise just yesterday. I have a feeling that they are gonna take my $ anyway in the form of receiving an Apple gift card... Deja Vu?
- Walt Ruppar

Still waiting for my refund email from #apple I know @ChrisPirillo got his... What about this guy? Oh and Viqi, I give 50k doll hairs for the domain...
- Walt Ruppar
$199 (16GB) + $18 upgrade fee + $30/mo data + $5/mo 200 text messages + $11.94 tax = $228.94 one time + $35/mo recurring - I got to keep my current rate plan though, which saved me about $20/mo under what new customers get shafted with. Still ended up with $15/mo more due to the "iPhone Data Plan" being more expensive than the one for every other phone. Edit: Arrival and activation not...

Wow, #Apple just punted me to #AT&T... Still haven't gotten my rebate notification so I called back to customer care. They told me that they've contacted all the affected customers from a 'list' ATT gave them and my name wasn't on it... I really just almost sent my 3GS back to Apple because of this run-around... Gonna give one shot to ATT first though. This is crap!
- Walt Ruppar

I got the $299. 389 with tax, activation and applecare.
- Drew Lucas
Ha! Exactly what I thought AT&T would say... Preorders via the Apple site are Apple's responsibility.... Guess who I'm on the phone with now?

The CS manager changes his tune when I asked him how to retrun the product for a full refund.... Still have to wait for a call back tomorrow, but feeling a little better that worst case I return this one and go buy a new one at the correct price!

via iPhone
Sorry to hear of all the hassles, Walt.
- Stephen Mack
I'm sure I'm a small % exception here, but thanks Stephen. Just sharing the experiances, but still haven't lost faith in Apple. I mean honestly I sort of figured I wouldn't get the magic refund email and would have to call back... According to AT&T I was elligable for upgrade on May 2... So I ahold have just recieved the 299 price from the start.
- Walt Ruppar
via iPhone
Hmmm... Can't but think #Apple is giving me the runaround here hoping that I will just walk away... Here's the e-mail I recieved this morning: "We noticed that you contacted us recently about your Apple Order XXX and wanted to ensure your issue was fully resolved. If you have any additional questions or concerns, we would like to address them." Damn straight I haz additional questions... Called and the CS agent was like "I don't know why you received that e-mail... we'll have a manager call you back today"
- Walt Ruppar
Excellent... #Apple sent me a survey link asking me to tell them how I feel.... :)
- Walt Ruppar
It's a minor thing, and I've not heard of it being fixed, but have they made it possible to hide the keyboard in TXT if the input area loses focus, other than by going back/forward, or temporarily browsing in edit mode? It just seems to useless to keep showing it until the text-input area is active again.
- tollie williams
Tollie, not quite sure what you mean is this in safari or elsewhere?

This is a really good, quick analysis of TCO on iPhone, Pre, Android. Really not liking expensive AT&T costs. Love my iPhone, but chapped about expense for bloated carrier costs; especially, since they are behind on technology.
- Susan Beebe
I've done roughly the same analysis when the original (even more pricy!) iPhone came out, comparing it against then known median costs for other smartphones/ carriers, and decided Apple must have had someone else in mind when they conceived it. No wonder they are keeping the iPod Touch two steps behind in iPhone-hardware terms (current Touch v2. = no GPS, no video capability, no mic,...

my Verizon BB curve was 70$ (due to a 70$ rebate), and costs 62$ a month voice and data (enterprise) thanks to a 22% corporate discount. (my wife and I share 700 minutes) I will wait for Apple to offer the Iphone on Verizon.....wonder how long.....maybe when my contract is up. Great article!
- Mike Nencetti
Does anyone know why the Android never really took off?
- rowlikeagirl
The iPhone's TCO is completely worth it, IMHO! @rowlikeagirl, Because there's a degree of benefit to uniform hardware and the ease of use of centralized application distribution. While i love the idea of an open, standardized mobile OS, no one really cares about that. When you have a phone, you want it to be useful in the ways you want to use it. The G1 just had too many little...

What was Apple's advantage in signig the exclusivity contract with AT&T? Seems to me iPhones would have 90 percent of the smartphone market if it weren't for that. I know that personally, I won't switch to AT&T just to have an iPhone, unless the cost were low enough to convince me to jump ship, which it isn't.
- rowlikeagirl
via iPhone
No advantage; a necessity and a premise. Apple needed a major US-carrier willing to implement their own then-killer app visual voicemail, which required changes to cellnet infrastructure, and plenty of servers. That left, I believe, a choice between US-Verizon and AT&T (Sprint, the smallest of the major three, didn't have the necessary bandwidth technology or something). Hence AT&T was...

I couldn't believe how painless the entire process was --though I am getting (fair) rebuttals from developers :)

I know, I was also surprised on how easy it was. I was thinking of returning an app that I bought, that is just crap. :)

While not exactly the same: I got a refund on a song from iTunes that was accidentally purchased twice on the same account...your story is better though...
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
That's still good Rob. At least you got your money back. :)
- TheHenry
Wow, I had no idea you could return apps! LOL!
- Techno Todd
Hmm, do they delete the application packages from your iTunes downloads directory, or something? Or do they just blacklist the digital certificate in the embedded binary? Of course, there's probably nothing to stop someone from copying the iPod/iPhone application package to another disk, getting a refund and then copying the package back to potentially use it...

iPhone OS and SDK 3.1 Beta now available - "Developers can now download the beta version of software 3.1 OS and SDK. " - http://www.livecrunch.com/2009...
AT&T already sold out of launch day iPhone 3G S pre-orders By Aidan Malley Published: 12:30 PM EST Signaling a likely repeat of Apple's iPhone sell-outs of the past two years, AT&T is already warning that those making iPhone 3G S pre-orders that they won't get their handsets on launch. The US carrier's internal sales system is asking staff to tell customers that any pre-orders made on Saturday the 13th or later won't ship on launch and instead will reach retail locations between 7 and 14 days after the order is made, overshooting the release date. Those who delayed their pre-orders long enough but who still want an iPhone 3G S the same day will have to wait at an AT&T (or Apple) store until regular availability starts at 8 a.m. rather than the 7 a.m. early access time touted earlier this week, Boy Genius hears. Any pre-orders, however, will receive an e-mail once their device is in stock. While unfortunate for those who hadn't already set aside money for the faster, more feature-laden...
