"Read Crowley's report and stop on page two when he admits seeing Gates's Harvard photo ID. I don't care what Gates had said to him up until then, Crowley was obligated to leave. He had identified Gates.... Had a citizen refused to leave Gates' home after being told to, the cops could have made an arrest for trespass. ... He's staying put in Gates' home, having been asked to leave, and Gates is demanding his identification. What does Crowley do? He suggests that if Gates wants his name and badge number, he'll have to come outside to get it"

"And please do not overlook Crowley's final act of provocation. He tells an angry citizen to calm down while producing handcuffs. The only plausible question for the chief to ask about that little detail is: "Are you stupid, or do you think I'm stupid?" Crowley produced those handcuffs to provoke Gates and then arrested him. The decision to arrest is telling. If Crowley believed the...

So do I. But there are no legal protections for the data once they have it. They can be subpoenaed for almost any reason, and they don't even have to tell you they've received a subpoena. So I'm sitting this one out for now.

I'd be much more interested if there was anything you could do about most of the genetic conditions. Gene hacking anyone?
- Piaw Na
Can it be done anonymously or with a fake name?
- Paul Buchheit
I believe it can be done with a fake name. In fact, if say, FriendFeed bought kits for the whole office, each kit would have a claim code. The claim code is entered https://www.23andme.com/user... and though I haven't been past that page (yet), I'm fairly certain they don't do identity checking there.

I remember enjoying reading this: http://buzzyeah.com/tag... (he asked for donations to do the test and then shared lots of info)

The first prompt: "Please enter the full name of each person for whom you are ordering below. The saliva collection kits will arrive individually labeled with the names you enter." I put in Jane Doe. Then I put New York and apparently they're not allowed to operate in the state of New York. So I selected a different state but then the billing info. I tried to figure out how to buy a...

Piaw, I personally would like to understand better what the genes do before hacking them. That's what I'm working on. Not everyone is of the same opinion though--some people boldly just go in and start hacking (though usually on microbes, not themselves!). That's synthetic biology, more or less.
- Ruchira S. Datta
Oh yeah, I wouldn't want to go hacking on my own genes. The issue I see with these genetic tests is that there's not much you can do about most of those traits.
