"Ahmed Dawud's neighbours thought he had lost his mind. When they saw three young architects building Dawud's winter house in Jericho, in the occupied West Bank, using bags filled with a soil mix of clay, sand and gravel, they were quick to mock the 45-year-old [...] But while the architects busied themselves with Dawud’s home last year, Nesher, an Israeli company that exports the vast majority of cement used in the occupied Palestinian territories, suddenly stopped the supply for almost a month because of cement shortages in the Israeli market. A few months later, the price of cement sold to the Palestinians also increased - and Dawud’s neighbours stopped mocking his use of natural, cheaper materials." - Mark H from Bookmarklet
"Stringent Israeli restrictions on the import of construction materials to the occupied Palestinian territories have forced Palestinians to think of alternative ways to build their homes. Mud bricks and straw made a comeback in the besieged Gaza Strip in 2009, after a major Israeli military attack on the Palestinian territory, known as Operation Cast Lead, left 1,400 Palestinians dead... more... - Mark H

"The phrases "public housing" or "low-income housing" do not generally conjure thoughts of architectural innovation. Instead, one may envision rows of faded pastel cubes surrounded by dead lawns and tall fences, or looming concrete towers gridded with small windows. Both schemes are typically weighted with a grim institutional air, appear to have been built as cheaply as possible, and often address only one problem, shelter, amid many others. But it doesn't have to be that way, as several recent housing developments in Los Angeles prove. Instead, they pose the question: What if low-income housing was perceived as leading the vanguard of innovative, responsive architecture?" - Anika from Bookmarklet
Eons ago, I watched an architectural documentary series. One of the episodes focused on public housing. In Europe in the early 20th century, Mexico in the 50s & 60s and Asian recently, it talked about the amazing architecture of public/low-income housing in those countries. I used to wonder why ours (US) were built akin to prisons, but I think we all know that reason. - Anika
I thought the mid-century housing projects were avant-garde for their time, or at least inspired by avant-garde ideas. - John (bird whisperer)
In the US? I've seen some influenced by Bauhaus, but they were still rather depressing. There is housing project near me that was built in the late 70s. They're kind a a weird mishmash of English cottage + suburban townhome. It's only in the past couple of years have they begun to take care of the buildings & landscape. - Anika

"The Castello di Sammezzano is a show-stopper, a jaw-dropper. Hidden away in the Tuscan hills of Northern Italy, this electrifyingly beautiful Moorish castle was built a whopping 400+ years ago in 1605, but more than two decades, it’s been sitting empty, neglected, vulnerable to pillaging and to the elements." - Mark H from Bookmarklet
"Marquis Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximenes, a largely forgotten but key cultural, social and political figure in Florence when the city was the capital of Italy. Ferdinando, who lived and died at the property, spent 40 years planning, financing and realizing this exotic castle that would become the most important example of orientalist architecture in the country– only to be left to ruin at the hands of modern-day investors." - Mark H
"After the Marquis’ death at the end of the 19th century, there was a period of uncertainty for the property and historical records appear to be rather patchy. During the war, the Germans came looting, stealing mainly from the castle’s surrounding park that had once been considered the largest and most exotic in Tuscany. They took many important statues and fountains of Moorish style,... more... - Mark H

"Life is all about keeping things fresh and fun, and sometimes that means building a massive space shuttle replica on your roof. A 60-year-old Chinese man in the Guangdong province has built a massive space shuttle replica, and we can't think of a better way to decorate your roof." - Anika from Bookmarklet

Famous Architects Illustrated In The Style Of Their Buildings
"Architect and illustrator Federico Babina has followed up his previous architecture-inspired work with another stunning series titled ‘Archiportraits’ that imagines the portraits of famous architects designed in the style of their buildings. He has turned 33 prominent architects like Zaha Hadid, Frank Lloyd Wright and Tadao Ando into abstract compositions, with their eyes, noses, facial features and hair created from windows, columns, staircases and floor plans." - Mark H from Bookmarklet

Bring back any memories Slippy? Went around the Tricorn exhibition in the city museum today. Great to see these pieces of a wonderful example of brutalist architecture sadly no longer around.
