A slice of rock removed from the mainland near the island of Utoeya is the winning design for a memorial to commemorate the victims of Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik. Swedish artist Jonas Dahlberg says Memory Wound "reproduces the physical experience of taking away, reflecting the abrupt and permanent loss". Rubble from the 1,000 cu m slice of rock will form part of a memorial in Oslo where Breivik detonated a bomb. Breivik was jailed in August 2012. He was given 21 years in prison after he admitted killing 77 people, bombing the Norwegian capital before opening fire at a youth camp on Utoeya. - CarlC from Bookmarklet

"The city of Johannesburg, South Africa, recently got an innovative student housing structure made of recycled shipping containers and disused grain silos. Mill Junction student accommodation, as the complex is called was designed and built by the South African property developer Citiq. All told, the building process took a year to complete." - imabonehead from Bookmarklet

The Underground Home Mystery: Is There a Subterranean House Hidden Beneath Queens? | Inhabitat New York City
It's a spacious, secure home that could probably fetch a pretty penny on today's NYC real estate market - the only problem is that no one knows if it still exists. The mystery centers around The Underground World Home, a 12,000-square-foot subterranean residence that was built for the 1964 World's Fair at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens. After the fair ended, almost all of the exhibits were ordered to be demolished, but some think that the Underground Home's creator, Jay Swayze, may have left it intact. After all, why pay exorbitant demolition fees to remove the home when you could just tear down its above-ground pavilion and cover the entrance with some dirt? 50 years later, historians, students and regular Joes with shovels are still asking the question, "Is it down there?" The Underground Home was the brainchild of Jay Swayze, a Texas home builder with a knack for understanding the fears of the American public. The demand for ultra-secure dwellings and fallout shelters in... more... - Bluesun 2600 from Bookmarklet

"In 2009, Kat and her partner purchased ‘a janky old farm’ house near Woodstock, NY next to a pond inhabited by snapping turtles. They began a major renovations project on the traditional 19th century home both inside and out. Kat (and her ‘ninja house elves’) painted murals on every exterior surface of the house, while inside, customised DIY furniture was added little by little; countertops made out of pennies, shrines built around toasters and that sort of thing" - Mark H from Bookmarklet

The Urban Green House Emphasizes the Beauty of Natural Wood - Homes and Hues
"There's something about the natural, rich look of wood that just makes a home feel warm and cozy. If you live in Minneapolis, Minnesota, even the feeling of warmth can make a huge difference in these cold winter months -which is why this Urban Green House by Eric Odor with Chris Meyer of SALA Architects immediately seems so homey, while still appearing incredibly modern." - Kristin from Bookmarklet
"Sustainability" isn't just a buzzword when it comes to this design either. The house features a number of sustainable elements including passive solar heating, windows sufficient to produce natural lighting during the day, natural ventilation throughout the home, high-efficiency furnace, bamboo floors, composite fiber-cement siding and more. Additionally, the roof and porches extend... more... - Kristin

"Located in Marbella, on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, the Jellyfish House’s neighboring buildings block its view onto the nearby sea. Appropriately, it was chosen to cantilever the house’s pool from its roof, so that the beach and sea can always be seen while sunbathing or swimming. The house is organized around two paths of circulation: a ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ set of stairs, which intertwine and traverse the house’s four levels of living. The ‘fast’ stair leads from the exterior directly to the roof; it is enclosed in glass, which physically separates it from the house’s interior, yet it is simultaneously open to the exterior elements, so that sand is not brought into the house when returning from the beach. The ‘slow’ stair–whose long treads and short risers lend it its name–spans the entire length of the house, from ground floor main-entry to roof; it is indoors yet also open to the exterior elements, further amplifying the house’s capacity for ‘interiority’" - Mark H from Bookmarklet
