It isn't the same idea; it has more in common with Avatar than the Matrix, although Avatar sells the virtual experience as real and humanizing (of aliens) whereas Surrogates is about the experience being dehumanizing

Are you trying to say Hollywood is out of ideas? Reboot, reboot, reboot!
- Rick Schmidt
People know they are using the Surrogates, and ultimately it is a story about how it is dehumanizing to use these representations of ourselves. I enjoyed the graphic novel, and think that the film can do pretty well

Ah, I got it now Robert, thanks. The trailer made it seem remarkably like the Matrix: group of resistance fighters trying to take on a larger entity that's bent on keeping people locked up in a virtual world for a nefarious purpose, only a select few know what the real world is really like, and a misplaced guy who's blown away by all the new stuff he's learned.
- Mark Trapp
Without giving too much away, it is a world where you can interface with a robot surrogate version of yourself that allows you to sense as you would as a person. A police officer investigatiing a crime has his surrogate broken and is forced out to explore the real world for the first time in years and realizes that along the way we are losing something.

I have to say the subway ads for "Surrogates" are very powerful. Bold, with beautiful bodies that are part slinky. (am probably dating myself by mentioning that toy. :-) )
