Villa Emo is an Italian villa in the Veneto near the village of Fanzolo di Vedelago. It was designed by Andrea Palladio in 1559 for the Emo family of Venice and remained in the hands of the Emo family until it was sold in 2004. The exterior is simple, bare of any decoration. Inside this 17th- to 18th-century country house, named for the statues of dwarfs adorning the garden, is a series of frescoes executed in 1757 by Gianbattista Tiepolo depicting scenes from The Illiad,Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata,and Ariosto's Orlando Furioso.They include his Sacrifice of Iphigenia, unanimously acclaimed by critics as a major masterpiece of 18th-century painting. The neighboring foresteria (farmworkers' dormitory) contains frescoes showing 18th-century Veneto life at its most charming, and scenes of chinoiserie popular in the 18th century, by Tiepolo's son Giandomenico (1727-1804).
