What do the lyrics "momma wants to know if he's washed in the blood not just in the water" mean to you?
I read it as "Your dear mother wants to know if the young gentleman suitor you have brought home with you has been sanctified and redeemed by our Lord and Savior, the Christ Jesus; or if he just took a shower." In either case, mom should strongly consider minding her own business. ;) - James (@willia4)
Yeah, that's what I figured, James and it makes me like the song a lot less. Why do country songs often have to sully themselves by making references to religion. It's like they really don't care about how limiting that makes their appeal in a world that is mostly not Christian. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
::shrugs:: I don't go out of my way to avoid Christian references. That's the culture. I can no more ignore it in art than Michelangelo could. Of course, since it's country music, I'm having to really stretch the definition of "art"...;) - James (@willia4)
Let's just say that it has made choosing a first dance song a lot harder. If this song didn't have that one line it would be a contender. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
I would assume that the water refers to a baptism. Of course "blood" could represent baptism of the Holy Spirit, as practiced by Pentacostal churches. - Ontario Emperor from fftogo
@Alex My advice is that if you're not religious, just ignore it. You obviously like the song and if those words have no meaning to you, don't let them affect you. - EricaJoy
I'm familiar with the song & it's a nice song, religious reference or not. However, I do understand the conundrum when a song you really like has references that don't sit too well with you for whatever reason. That's why some of the songs I like aren't songs I *love* — sometimes the reference(s) just feels out of place and can take you out of the enjoyment of the song. - Lola Bean (Penguin)
Well i guess none of Yall are religious, to clear it up for you its referring to whether the young man was baptised because he has truely excepted the Lord as his savior (in the blood) or if he did it for show and has not truely excepted Jesus Christ as his savior (in the water) which would make a big difference to a religious country family. - Sierra Herrington
Yeah, I'm pretty sure we all got that - Scoble, Alex Scoble from IM
Hard to believe this thread is almost a year old and just got a response. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Typical country - there's a lot of this in country lyrics. (I'm a huge country fan). Doesnt bother me, reflects a lot of the demographic the artists are shooting for. - ωαřмaiden ❤Marrit Woman❤
"Another for the blocklist ma'am?" Why yes, I think so Chauncey, how very thoughtful of you. - EricaJoy from IM

No, I did, just that I thought we had already figured it out in the thread. Or maybe we didn't...it's been a year so I'd have to reread it to figure out...and I'm too lazy. Thanks for joining friendfeed though. - Scoble, Alex Scoble from IM

ROFL ok...thanks. :) I'm 38 and never am lacking in opinions either...or so I'm told. - Scoble, Alex Scoble from IM
To me it means someone read the big book of "Words in Lyrics that get people's attention," and made sure to include "blood" and "mama" in there somewhere. - Ciaoenrico
Lol well im 17... and my parents seem to think im too opinionated, i just like to help whenever i can. Which normally means anywhere where religion is involved... im not like a crazy christian or anything but chrstianity along with buddism, judaism, hinduism, etc. just interest me. - Sierra Herrington

yeah accept friend feed kinda scares me... im always affraid of offending people :/ - Sierra Herrington
I've found that the best way to start a conversation here is to say something that will definitely offend some people...The stuff that's just matter of fact doesn't get any play...sad but true. - Scoble, Alex Scoble from IM
hahaha very true! - Sierra Herrington
