What do you think of the stereotype of shy, mousey, quiet librarian?: I think that is a very outdated stereotype. Often people will ask me, 'I'm interested in library work. What characteristics do I have to have to be a library worker?' One of the most important characteristics you have to have, especially if you work in a public library, is that you want to work with people. But (librarians) also have to be dedicated, personable, outgoing, upbeat and engaged in their communities. ; We've gone from nuclear families (as) the focus for family entertainment to a situation where communities and neighborhoods provide entertainment.; What role do you think the library plays during a recession?

The geek side of me is going... "Dude, it's funny because those would be considered 'female' components." And the other side of me is going... "There is no other side of me."

Wondering what kinds of technology gizmos your library loans out? We loan laptops (some run Windows, some Mac OS), graphing calculators, financial calculators, portable DVD players, and video cameras (the latter are reserved for students in a single course, I think).
really want to do this, but working through policy/procedure details with circ has not been easy. any suggestions? (esp from RachelW since ur also in a health science library).
- Luke Rosenberger
Dorothea, that is awesomely complete and completely awesome -- thanks!
- Luke Rosenberger
We've got books. Books are technology, right?
- Greg Schwartz
Luke, ours go out for 2 hours each and must stay in the library. Users can renew if there isn't a waiting list. We don't really charge fines on them b/c we're pretty lax about that - we typically fine only for overdue reserves and books that are lost. They are in the normal circ system with barcode, but we also have circ staff check laptops when they come back to make sure the mouse & cables came back with them.

Laptops: PC, Mac & EEE, calculators...and I think that's it.

MIchael, they can keep the collider until they find a Higgs Boson.
- Steele Lawman
Luke, also, we have DeepFreeze on them so whatever one persons saves/changes is wiped out before the next person gets it, and we restrict check-out to our med center folks.
- Rachel Walden
@ellbeecee i'm interested in feedback/reactions u've received abt the EEE PCs from ur patrons
- Luke Rosenberger
@Luke - they just went live at the start of the semester, so I'm not sure yet what specific feedback we've gotten, but have heard that all get used a lot (use is not limited to in-library here - they can take anywhere as long as returned on time).

We currently loan: ipod touches, laptops, digital cameras, Flip video cameras, and a VCR

I am convinced that Palin is bulletproof. Because if you say "Jesus was a community organizer," the GOP says "will you please stop acting like Obama is the Second Coming? What hubris!"
- Steele Lawman
Alan, that is just dumb. The Republicans didn't say this. I said it. I'm tired of the GOP wrapping itself up in a big ol' blanket of pity-pottiness about things that haven't even happened!

"In the face of rising gas and food prices, many financially strapped American families are turning to the library this summer for a fun and free alternative to heavy spending. Bill Whitaker reports."
- Kevin Briody
Nice... a little too simple, but it gets across a positive message. I'll take it (though the dude reading the bodice-ripper may not be pleased when his buddies see that on TV)
