"Just curious then, why E-Social-SPs? Did you originally embrace Social, and now are re-thinking that decision? If Social is out, what is its substitute? Enterprise Collaboration Software Platforms? I think as a small community, we should try to strive for consensus. The enemy is not us."

"Hi Jacob. I've been trying to get to this post since I saw it. You make a great case for strategy consulting and I'm certain all my e20 guru friends are now subscribing to your blog... :-) However, be very careful with these numbers in absolute terms. When we did the study, many of our members were still planning. For instance, one member who took the study answered his budget was less than $500K because they were still fleshing out their enterprise plans. In the past week, his team presented to the CEO and the CEO's direct reports and got approval for a budget 10x that amount for the full roll out. Although, admittedly, very few of our members consulted outside strategic counsel for their initiatives. There is an element of truth to the "snake oil" post Stephen Baker wrote last week. The market is still in its infancy, so it will be a long time before we see big budgets allocated toward strategic planning for e20."

"Hey Jacob. Thanks for covering the report. Many of your unanswered questions are found in the report which will be available next week on our web site. The budget question is answered specifically. As you've pointed out, many of the members were answering for their initial pilots and not the complete roll-out. The typical global enterprise budget (including internal staff, software, change consulting, and ongoing training and management) is well into the multi-millions. A member (large retailer) just this week received approval from his CEO for a $5M budget. This is the first report of its kind for the Council. We will be continuing to publish more data regularly. For fun, you can place your bets with our Prediction Market: https://adoptionindex.crowdcast.com. Thanks again for covering the report."

"How did you arrive at the conclusion these companies are not seeing value? These firms are not in the "considering" phase; they've all been personally vetted by me. With very few exceptions, these firms are actively engaged in a 2.0 initiative. If they're in the exploratory stage, they are staffed and budgeted."

What on earth are you doing there? Fun place, but you've confused me...

That's where The Geezers (tm), also known as my parents, now live. And my sister lives about an hour away, also in on the bay in Delawhere...

"There are a lot of firms who would not even bother coming to a conference on this. Don't assume it's not happening, however. The criticism in the market is only accelerating the business case and generating better rationale for a larger spend. For a list of companies who are committed to a 2.0 initiative, see this list: http://itsinsider.com/2009..."

Mark: I have the 64-bit version of Vista and on a brand new machine it was constantly crashing. Really sucked. Probably was a bad display driver. Since getting Windows 7 I have not had a single crash.

Pics? Sorry I'm a sucker for viewing other people's workspaces.

Robert, why would you buy the dual and not wait for the quad? Just curious.
- Susan Scrupski
Susan: because I don't need even the dual for the most part. My heavy duty editing is done by Rocky on a huge Mac Pro.

"I think I will put "private jet" on my Santa list this year. I would love to be at Defrag, but can't justify all the travel in such a concentrated span of time. Boooo!"

Do tell if you see any good sessions on Xcelsius- I'll be using it at work sooner or later. #sapteched09

Oh, won't miss that. Timo just posted something else really cool. Saw it on my iphone. Will try to find the link, but probably on his web20 blog...

"Maybe what we need to evolve to is the correct time and place for email. Hey, I actually love gmail, to be honest. But I reject your suggestion that those of us who have become accustomed to the most expeditious use of email must bow to those in authority who refuse to learn new tools (and slow down our productivity). That's harsh, I know, but the reality is-- there are more efficient, more productive ways of working that happen to involve the 2.0 practices we've assimilated into our work life that, yes, don't include email. There's a larger discussion around this topic focused on evolving communication/collaboration patterns-- similar to your example with voicemail. But srsly, we need more folks in authority (cough, cough) to explain to the non-converted the who/when/why/where and how these changes should be adopted for the benefit of everyone involved. And perhaps accelerate that rate of change. I realize that's what you're attempting to do here, but (ouch) please don't perpetuate..."

"It's a curious thing, and I'm not sure why... but SaaS, and SaaS players, are generally not a discussion in the e20 echo chamber. That should probably change. I guess it's just assumed SaaS is part of the story, although many customers prefer to host their own social software behind the firewall. In this case, I'd say Conformity wouldn''t fit neatly into the e20 vendor landscape. Looks like a great company/offering though. Thanks for the heads up. Will keep my eye out."

"Really pleased to be working with you and Dan, Carl. Very much looking forward to the results of our study! On the demographics, I was just looking at our Facebook Fan page for the 2.0 Adoption Council. http://bit.ly/m1KKx The data is presented in nearly a perfect bell curve with Males age 35-44 at the mean. The majority of fans are absolutely Males 25-54... and this is Facebook (!), the haven for Millennials. So, I might concur Enterprise 2.0 not for kids. Check it: http://bit.ly/17qFsF The good news is-- if we can't sell them wikis and blogs (or research), we might try our hand at sports cars and golf clubs. :-)"

"Hey. Just did a phenomenal interview with a large, well-known, Wall Street investment bank. Ironically (Den), it was the audit and compliance global organization that drove an e20 solution to answer an age-old problem: high inefficiencies and underutilization. It's an impressive global rollout that incorporates 5 financial center locations with the firm's subject matter experts in product, trading desk, regulatory, and banking. The initiative has yielded a "huge leap forward" due to the transparency and visibility the firm has as a result of breaking down the fiefdom walls that impeded the firm's progress in years past. Greatest challenge? The people issues. It forces employees to communicate more. Additionally, the new processes expose the weak links in the firm and threaten job security/relevance. Greatest benefit? The initiative answers to the Board of Directors and provides predictable, reliable reporting that mitigates risk and ensures regulatory compliance."

"This comment will sound like spam, but it's not. This is an awesome post, Joel. Thanks for taking the time to write it. SharePoint is the 800-lb Beast in the 2.0 Adoption Council, and I've been wondering if there is some Beauty in there."
- Susan Scrupski
Argh! I tried to figure out what mine would say and it came out something like this: "I'm on my team's Sharepoint site. Your team doesn't have one and you aren't authorized to view mine. Have a nice day!"
- Daniel J. Pritchett
This makes a good point for me to press in-house though: Viral adoption of Sharepoint is not possible when teams have disconnected silos and no one has access to the other silos.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I'm resharing this to the #e2adoption LinkedIn group - until we get some centralized micromessaging going on we'll lose these tasty bites of conversation.

I've been experimenting with socialcast... do you want to try it? it's pretty cool. better than Yammer, imo. Also, let's put this note from Steve Radick in the thread too. http://twitter.com/sradick...
- Susan Scrupski
Done. I'd be happy to help with socialcast testing. Can you give me an account on a 2-person E2adoption community or should I start my own trial sandbox?
- Daniel J. Pritchett
from IM
They too are using the Yammer/Signals model of "your email domain determines your community access". Yet another sign that we oughta get some member emails created. I know you said you'd bought a domain and that you were testing Google Apps but I never figured out whether or not those were related stories.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I've got a glimmer of an idea on how to push this argument and I'm going to use endless corporate restructuring as the foundation: "How long has your current team existed? Does it have its own knowledge silo? What is to be done with this silo when the team ramps down and is eventually decommissioned? What will you do with your silo if the team is split up or absorbed by another team?" I feel like "stop making KM silos" is the obvious answer, but maybe I'm prejudiced.

Sorry Dan for not responding here... I was running around down town- lunch, etc. Socialcast is generously giving us a private instance. Email invite is on its way...
- Susan Scrupski
I would've but I read it from the car and didn't think it wise to respond. Suffice it to say that I think we should all use comment aggregators like IntenseDebate and Disqus to bring offsite comments back to the original post. There's still plenty of work to be done in that arena but it looks like we're moving in the right direction.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
yeah. probably should install those, but that wasn't my point, was it? :-) are you really reading blog posts in the car Dan? please be careful....
- Susan Scrupski
I try not to read while driving but I do poke around at stop lights and in parking lots. Probably a slippery slope that will lead to a Thelma & Louise ending.
