I still wish there was a better market/developer/download management, period :) So many things missing or broke - top daily/weekly/monthly - they don't even change the app image advertisements at the top, developers have little control for version management - neither do users. You have to release separate apps for "lite" and "full" versions, spamming the market... along with spam apps...

yeah, my number one want is an 'Update All'
- Christian Cable
+1 for "Update All" in the Market. With an extra security feature that held back updates for any app where access permissions had changed, and allowed manual authorization for those.

Books, literacy and technology? (Iris: If you ever figure out what information literacy is, explain it to me.)

How I explain it is extremely dependent on context, but I will often distill the ACRL Standards into ordinary English. (New Common Craft video: "The ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education In Plain English"!)

How to discern between different sources of information, and how to tell on which one is relevant to which people, and in what context. That's the way I'd interpret it.

I'd like to see data on battery life with this sort of thing on. Acquiring a GPS lock and sending a data packet for updating does take a fair amount of juice, even if you push it only once every 10 minutes or so.
- Otto
its generally that first lock that really sucks, especially if you haven't used the GPS in a while.

What is this "Latitude Web page" that the author mentions? I can't find anything but that silly 1/3rd screen iGoogle gadget that hurts to interact with.

My verdict: Not nearly as UI friendly as iPhone. Quite a few fat finger annoyances. However, the Droid integration with Google is friggin awesome, the apps are cool (http://bit.ly/7Pkvj5), the 3G network coverage works everywhere--even visiting my parents in the deserts of New Mexico. That last one sealed it for me. I can learn to work around Droid's UI shortcomings. I wish I didn't have to, but Apple really fucked up by marrying AT&T, especially outside of cities.
- Dave Friedel
Minor correction: Apple didn't totally screw up. They drove Verizon not to be so lackluster. So THANKS APPLE for improving my existing carrier! LOL!

At my suggestion, my wife just got a Droid for her work phone, replacing a WinMo Treo. (She's had a G1 for a year for her personal phone.) I am extremely impressed with the hardware quality, even if the keyboard takes a bit of getting used to.

Dagens graf.

In 4th grade I would constantly sing "I Want Your Sex" and "Push It" o_O But, I do think kids are exposed to a lot more of *everything* these days...it's a sign of the times. :-/
- Anna Haro
Granted I don't listen to much of today's pop music, but I remember in 7th grade we used to do PE to Erotic City. Come on...
- Admiral Anika
"O.P.P", etc. No idea what I was singing about at the time. I think about this a lot, too. I agree with Anna that a lot of it seems to go even further now.
- Kamilah Gill
I think the difference is in the image of those doing the performing... how many of them were dressed with very little clothing and spinning round a pole whilst still being 15 or 16 years old? Compare the image of ABBA (my biggest detest in music) to that of Christina and Britney at their peak. Hell, just like at one Miley Cyrus at the kids awards!
- alphaxion
Yes, alphaxion! I read an article about that very topic and the writer referred to it as a "Stripper Culture" And, how it's something the kids today grew up with, mainly over the last ten years.
- Anna Haro
Ah, the "every link is a paid link" moral relativism argument. Mark says "I’ve had a grand total of about five people unfollow me personally because of ads I’ve run in my tweets" but doesn't take into account the people (like me) that choose not to start following him because of in-tweet ads.
- Matt Cutts
So are you going to unfollow Robert? He is sponsored by Rackspace, and frequently puts out Rackspace-promoting content in his tweets. Should I unfollow you? You're paid by Google, and often put out Google related materials that you wouldn't normally propagate if you weren't on staff there.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Mark, you're welcome to think everyone is doing in-stream Twitter ads by your definition of "ads"; I just disagree with you. :)
- Matt Cutts
from iPhone
I think it will be relatively easy to spot the shill ads from individuals that are posting information about/from their employers or about products they are truly enthused about. People aren't stupid.
- Brian Sullivan
@Matt - let's go with *your* definition of ad, or rather, your employer's definition of ad..... http://screencast.com/t... - by that definition, your latest tweet is an ad.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
My tweet about email spammer Alan Ralsky being sentenced to jail is an ad? I'm not following you, sorry. My point in commenting was that you don't really know how many people choose not to follow you because of tweets like "Follow @BlueToolCrew & you could win a Craftsman Autohammer. Your thumbs will thank you! http://spon.in/06/D8" I suppose the claim is that's disclosure because the redirector has "spon" in it? I think that sort or tweet has a more corrosive effect on your followers than you might expect.
- Matt Cutts
from iPhone
Agree with Matt Cutts. I think irrelevant ads that distract and are not useful to the audience do have a corrosive effect on your followers. The best example I have of ads done tastefully is Google AdWords that promotes relevant ads above organic search results. In many cases the ad is better than the search result even. However Matt, what would be your opposition to an ad that is as relevant to any other tweet from someone you are following.
- Bindu Reddy
@Matt: the latest tweet at the time when I wrote that was one about Google Chrome Extensions, Matt. http://screencast.com/t... That's an announcement post for your employer, purely promotional with a little bit of endorsement on the side.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
For that matter, I'm not the one who's against ads. If you want to promote who you work for and who pays for your meals, I'm all about that. You're the one who says that's a bad thing. With regard to my sponsored tweets coming from the Craftsman campaign, there are about three types of conspicuous disclosure involved - there's a tool bar that shows up on the link, there's disclosure on...

I'm on Mark's side, but I think you're all doing it right. (I think Mark's saying the same thing though) Follow your stats. In the end it's the numbers that count.
- Jesse Stay
I do think it's a little odd that a Google employee is going by assumption though. I'm curious where Matt's stats are to prove his point.
- Jesse Stay
Which is why I unfollowed those jackasses :-). Anyone who I felt was marketing was unfollowed.
- Richard A.
Richard, which is fine - from what these guys are saying you're in the minority. (although calling them a jackass for it is a bit over-the-top I think - let them use it the way they like!)
- Jesse Stay
Every link you tweet, to your own content or anyone else's, is an ad. You are fooling yourself if you think otherwise. Whether they are paid ads or not, depends. I'd like to think most are unpaid. I will admit to tweeting things and posting stuff here on friendfeed where I got some sort of compensation for doing it (though not always money), but I won't admit to doing it for anything I...

This reminds me of early discussions with google founder in 1999 around paid inclusion (prior to adwords) - the number one issue being discussed here is about user experience - period. "As C. Christensen puts it, “it states that in a technology’s early stages, the rate of progress in performance is relatively slow. As the technology becomes better understood, controlled, and diffused, the rate of technological improvement increases . But the theory posits that in its mature stages, the technology will asymptotically approach a natural or physical limit, which requires that ever greater periods of time or inputs of engineering effort be expended to achieve increments of performance improvement“... As one can see on the two figure above, there are two important points in s-curves: * The beginning: that I exemplify through these 2 quotes by Paul Saffo and William Gibson. They simply show that s-curves’ beginning are already here and the point is to spot them through different data sources (be they readings, field studies or always-on attitude. * The tipping point: the moment in time when the rate of adoption increases, which depends both on technological improvements...

I wish Twitter had subscriber email notifications that looked like Friendfeed. FF makes it easy to figure out of you want to subscribe back. In fact, I wish Twitter was Friendfeed. *sigh*
