had this conversation in the car today with my 8yr old daughter ... Lily Allen was being interviewed and they played her latest and I said, I don't get this woman, with her mock cockney accent and her fey child voice and her crap lyrics ... why would you want to listen to any of her songs more than once ... and my 8 yr old daughter totally agreed. We settled on Scout Niblett, Meg Baird, Alela Diane as 1,000,000 times better for contemporary singers

It's actually a very common mistake. I've stopped trying to correct people on it. You'd be surprised how many people give you push-back on it.
- Christian (Simply X)
They shouldnt put a damn duck on the packaging! :) yea I use to but in high school I was corrected!
- Brandy Lea
Well at least you didn't quack when you used it right...right?
- Anthony Farrior
Duct is one of those words I don't have time to pronounce correctly. Even after I found out it was Duct Tape, I still pretty much ignore that first 't' :)
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
When reciting the pledge of allegiance I always thought here was this guy Richard Stands when it was really "which it stands." And to the republic. For Richard Stands. Etc etc. Never mind.
- Dave Winer
Dave - I had to Google Richard Stands. SHAME ON ME.
- Mona Nomura
OK, Mona, you evoked a moment of self-conscious recollection ............... In the 7th grade, on many occasions "locket rauncher" came out of my mouth instead of the intended "rocket launcher". This is an essential phrase for Jr High boys, btw, so sufficiently embarrassing. It's a spoonerism, but back then I didn't know it had a cool name :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
- Micah Wittman
I knew it was duct tape. I thought people who called it duck tape were just being funny.
- Morton Fox
I think this actually speaks to a larger socialogical issue that exists in current Western societies wherein the attractive looking people are allowed mistakes such as this because it's 'cute.'
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I was just in Home Depot the other day, and they had on sale a brand name of duct tape called DUCK TAPE. So, you know, if you want, you could always say that this is what you meant, Mona. :)
- Steven Perez
Mona... I say duck tape... And will continue to do so :)
- Johnny Worthington
hahahhahaha Then I will continue to do so, too!
- Mona Nomura
In the UK there is a brand actually called Duck Tape with picture of duck etc, so it's hardly surprising people get confused - but it's DUCT tape, or where I come from it's actually GAFFER tape, from the film/TVindustry where the gaffer would use it to mend whatever
- Ivan Pope
from twhirl
I worked at Staples for 7 years.....there was a brand "DUCK" tape with a duck mascot too...I always thought it was Duct, but say Duck LOL
- Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
it's no different to calling vacuum cleaners "hoovers" or correction fluid "tipp-ex". Or searching "googling". It's just the name of the most prominent brand for the product.
- alphaxion
or making copies xeroxing, etc etc, completely agree
- Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
would you like a Post-It with your Duck Tape? ;)
- alphaxion
Me too. It's the way the cool kids say it.
- Chris Nixon
It's perfectly ok. I specifically use Duck tape to tie up my rogue ducks during interrogation and when necessary, waterboarding :)
- Amit Pradhan
LOL! Won't even ask for a thread concerning incorrect music lyrics but....husband(bass player) thought the first line of Born to be Wild was, "itch'n for a runnin' and so sang this line every time they played the song. He was in his mid 40's before corrected version known "Get your motor running" :)
- Janet
A few years ago someone showed (scientifically!) that one thing duct tape does not work on is ducts. Dunno how well it works on ducks, though.
- Bob O'Hara
When I first heard "Don't look back in anger" I could have sworn they sung "Totalican ways" instead of "So Sally can wait"
- alphaxion
How about this -- on Romper Room, when the kids ate their milk and cookies, first they had to pray to god to thank him for the food. I thought god was the handy man who brought the food in.
- Dave Winer
@Dave, I watched Romper Room when I was very little, but about all I remember is the mirror. Did they really pray? Wow, I either forgot about that, or just missed it.
- Joey Gibson
I used to tell the kids at school, my father was a beast. What I really meant was Obese.
- Marcus Beagley
I called duck tape DUCT tape for the longest time, until Bora Zivkovic posted that Wikipedia link to confuse me and Alex Scoble corrected me.
- Bruce Lewis

Duck Tape, WD 40, and Slick 50 are shade tree essentials.
- Wallace
@Wallace: "You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and it shouldn't, use the duct tape."
- Jemm
if you have ever tried to secure a duck to something, you know that the only thing that will work is duck tape. i've tried soldering, welding, scotch tape, glue, bubble gum, everything short of rivets. duck tape is the best for such purposes.
- Morgan Haley
Mona: that works well on Gorillas and other primates, but not too well on ducks. the natural water-shedding capabilities on most waterfowl prevents the gorilla glue from adhering as tightly as one would expect.
- Morgan Haley
I like that! You should read up on meme theory - I've long believed there is complete crossover, i.e. we are talking memes here ...

I have no idea, Marc Canter is in the mix, we are talking mid-town Korean I think, but need more brains on this one you are right, any ideas? anyone?

This is Chris Nuttall of the Financial Times showing my his new journalistic tool which also is the coolest gadget I have seen in a long time.
- Robert Scoble
Don't miss this guy and this video. This thing is awesome. He's a technology journalist at the FT.
- Robert Scoble
I saw one of these in the wild last week- looks awesome!
- Larry Rubin
I just convinced a friend of mine to buy one for her boyfriend for his birthday. But now that he'll have one, I'm so jealous that I think I should get one too...
- Trent Olson
For 150 bucks, this pen better have a bottle opener! Seriously though, I played with it last week, and it's really sweet.
- Brian Chaikelson
from Alert Thingy
I'm too much of a pen nut to use some random ballpoint pen. When can someone develop one of these that works with an arbitrary pen (e.g. my Namiki Vanishing Point?)
- Jason Ziglar
This looks incredible, seriously. I want one but I don't think the software works on mac ;(
- Tony
from Alert Thingy
I can't wait to get one... when they have a Mac version.
- Daniel Shaw
Not a fan of tha paper-based ones. There are ones out there that don't need special paper. Still, novel idea but only works for some.
- Alex
from Alert Thingy
But you have to use special paper, right? And it's got a gigantic long cord on it. Can't see myself ever using something like that.
- mathew ingram
Very cool. If it could be used in conjunction with voip audio conferences, WITHOUT having to use speakerphone, it would be a killer tool for me.
- jcunwired
Wouldn't do me much good -- my handwriting is now so scrawled (after 30+ years of neglect -- using computers and keyboards) that I probably couldn't read my own notes anyway -- but interesting none the less
- Brian Sullivan
It takes a little while for people to notice you are here. Give it a week and BELIEVE ME you'll be addicted. Make sure you comment on other people's posts, and make sure you reply to people's comments on your posts. The community will find you.
- Chris Nixon
Hey Shel! I started really using it a few days ago, and agree with Chris - engage with it / feed the monster a bit and it'll warm up.
- Anthony Citrano
Woah - there's huge community here. I think the FF developers still have some opportunities to address to make it feel more like a community, but it's here.
- Internet's Tad
It can be a slow start but once you pass some weird FriendFeed threshold, the whole thing takes off and gets really good.
- Akiva Moskovitz
What I like most here is that barriers disapear, people get in touch for real
- directeur
I like the concept of the FriendFeed Threshold. :) Maybe it's also the impedance device to keep the ruinous hordes out.
- Internet's Tad
The community is watchin' you - and you will find the community too, be sure!
- ※Fu※
@Tad: I LIKE "the impedance device to keep the ruinous hordes out" !! :)
- directeur
i like that different people form micro-communities around different items, very transient but still connected. like running into people you know at different stores or venues in a small town. a new, more complex, subtle manifestation of community here.
- Morgan
Subscibing to a few more people in FF might help increase flow? 1000 vs 20 is probably the cause of most of your feeling
- Brian Sullivan
Interesting .. Shel comments on Twitter about FriendFeed but has yet to even show up in the comments on FriendFeed about his post on Twitter. No wonder he isn't seeing the community
- Steven Hodson
Yeah, I hate it when people poke us and then don't even participate. Of course Shel's off exercising right now. I'll give him some heck when he gets off the treadmill.
- Robert Scoble
Well noticed Steven! Maybe we need more good software with FriendFeed?
- directeur
I agree Shel, it doesn't have that instant gratification that Twitter does but I still see definite value...and hey I just subscribed to you, how's that for community! ;)
- Nicholas Kreidberg
hey shel, we have an awesome community here on friendfeed!
- Tyler Gillies
@Steven @Robert Yup, how can you evaluate a community without immersing yourself in it first?
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Tell me guys, (not troll intended I swear) why does the term "community" makes me cringe? I doubt it's a bad "souvenir" from Digg & co, but can't we just be here and call it somthing else? :)
- directeur
@directeur, im sorry but the word community doesn't come from digg. its a word thats been around a long time. and no, we won't use another word
- Tyler Gillies
Tyler: I didn't said or meant that the word "community" came from Digg :) All I'm saying in fact is that a corrupted, with silly levels of influence community is IMHO bad :)
- directeur
its ironic how he says theres no community yet a micro-community has formed around his post
- Tyler Gillies
Tyler, There's a discussion here. Because you commented here, does that make you and me members of a community? If so, why did you refer to me in the 3rd person?
- shelisrael1
I would like to see a static of how many Twits come in to FF over other feeds.
- Admiral70
shel if we were at a large party and had a passing discussion would you say that we're not part of a larger community that makes up the party?
- Morgan
@shel yes. and because i always talking to everyone and referencing you, thus meeting criteria for third person
- Tyler Gillies
Morgan, I define an online community as a place where people can find other who share similar interests while eliminating geographic barriers. If we attend a part and have a nice chat, we have had a nice chat at a good party, but we have not necessarily formed a community.
- shelisrael1
@shel, thats a good point. but what if we kept going to different partys with the same people? id consider that community
- Tyler Gillies
FriendFeed homework project: Test out the search engine. Add a word here in comments. Then go and search on that same word after 10 seconds. What happens? Here, let's make up a word: frieeeend.
It took a few seconds, but now it's there (and I didn't know someone used that before, which is even funnier).
- Robert Scoble
Now you can search on anything above. Search on "a few seconds" (without the quotes) and you'll see the post above this one. Amazing.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, I think I finally understand what you were talking about during the Elite Tech Podcast. You weren't talking about the speed of retrieving results, you were talking about the speed at which FriendFeed indexes content, which is a LOT faster than, say, Google. Scrumptdillyicious!
- Mark Dykeman
Interesting limitation, though. It hasn't indexed the fake word that I put in the previous comment because I added it in an Edit after the fact; it wasn't in the original comment. EDIT to THIS comment - nope, I was wrong - it did index Scrumptdillyicious, it just took about 1 - 2 minutes to do so.
- Mark Dykeman
Ugh, it won't let you past 11th page of results (or ANY page for that matter)...
- Yuvi
Remarginable - this fake word seemed to index much more quickly.
- Mark Dykeman
I think I'll have to bring that up the only-last-300-items issue wherever I can till it's resolved..
- Yuvi
There were periods where FriendFeed's search engine was delayed a few hours (or more). I'd try searching for recent posts with "who:everyone" and get absolutely nothing, not even the entry I just saw.
- Mitchell Tsai
Ah, sorry between 2 PC's and spinning back and forth in my chair. I figured I was doing something wrong as even searching frieeeend friendfeed failed!
- Joe Dawson
Yuvi: Ana at FriendFeed responded to me about the Page 11 problem "Yes, this is a bug that we intend to fix" on May 6 at Google Groups http://tinyurl.com/4p2q47http://friendfeed.com/e...http://friendfeed.com/e... It must not be a high-priority fix because that was 23 days ago. FriendFeed's very fast otherwise. I can live with not accessing older stuff for a few months.
- Mitchell Tsai
