"Microsoft has dominated e-mail for years. Hotmail is one of the most popular web e-mail services, while Outlook remains the most popular desktop tool for reading and managing the inbox. Gmail on the other hand represents the rapid advance of online e-mail technology, which allows you to access your inbox from anywhere in the world. Which do you prefer? We want to know, so be sure to add your vote in the poll below and let us know what you think of desktop e-mail and Outlook versus Gmail and the advance of webmail in the comments."

This is a goofy match-up. Outlook is a corporate e-mail solution that just so happens to also have the ability to connect with non-corporate resources. Gmail is a non-corporate e-mail solution that just so happens to [arguably] have the ability to be used in a corporate environment.
- Akiva Moskovitz
For personal use, Gmail is a smart, fast and agile solution. For just send and receiving emails... But for professional uses, such as OneNote integration, Bulk sending, Synchronised contact management/grouping/nesting/managing/sharing ,built-in email, sms, messaging and fax management/sending /receiving, Sharepoint posting,RSS Reading/Sharing ,Email flow ruling etc. MS Outlook is still much better on the topics above...
- Acharad-Sami-
I hates me some Outlook... Gmail all the way!
- Janice
I chose Gmail too myself. Although TBH as some have pointed out, this isn't a fair comparison. Still, Gmail + GCal >>> Outlook by far
- LANjackal
from IM
Yes, Social media mumbojumbo needs none of above :D
- Acharad-Sami-
Gmail for me. I stopped using Outlook ages ago. I like Gmail's price too. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
"<snip> Gmail on the other hand represents the rapid advance of online e-mail technology, which allows you to access your inbox from anywhere in the world..." Lol, it sounds like they're saying Gmail pioneered webmail.
- Adi
suppose outlook is getting it's own thing on.. for me it doesn't do it.. but need it because of the exchange integration.. and I use xobni to make it more bearable...
- Jaap Willem
I am migrating to Gmail, but I do have to say that Outlook with Xobni is pretty freakin' cool.
- Martha
yeah, with a filter and then xobni makes it ok.. still prefer Gmail for my own business though
- Jaap Willem
I never hated Outlook but as they add more and more features, it gets harder to just do the basic functions. I just want to get my mail, add items in my calender, tasks, and make the occasional change to my contacts. The current 2010 beta is very pretty, but I still can't figure out how to turn off the empty recycle bin confirmation message! It's driving me nuts!
- TheDreaming
Gmail. Outlook constantly crashes and freezes up.
- rowlikeagirl
Gmail. It's simple, with tens of thousands of emails, searching via Outlook is a time sink.
- John Hogenesch
They are completely different animals, so it's an unfair comparison. You should be comparing Gmail to Live Mail, as Outlook is just a desktop client which can be used with multiple servers (typically, with Exchange). As for me, I use both Gmail and Outlook less and less: they are both being substituted with push-email on my smartphones.
- Pavlo Zahozhenko
Surely it does, I use it. My point is that when the primary way to access email is via push-email on smartphone, email server itself is irrelevant (assuming it is stable enough).
- Pavlo Zahozhenko
It's good to know I'm not an idiot. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Oh, so that was the master plan? 1. Declare friendfeed dead 2. Idiots leave. 3. Enjoy the good stuff without them around any more.
- April Russo (app103)
April, that's not a bad plan actually. Finally Robert's master plan is becoming clear ;)
- Glenn Slaven
April: bbbbwwwwaaaahhhhhhhaaaaahhhhhhaaaaaaa. Said while rubbing hands together in evil fashion.
- Robert Scoble
Keith: I never left. I've been here almost every day since July. I have reduced the number of hours I spend here from about 10 to 10 minutes, though. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Just JOkkkkkking, you know I <3 you LG =;o)
- sofarsoShawn
I'M BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111eleven
- Jim Norris
great to see you back here at friendfeed.. it's still rocking in it's own way.. welcome back and great new year
- Jaap Willem
I've found even if they're not idiots there are some times people that are just so negative or draining you have to block them, at least for a short period. I wish there was a way to do that which wasn't offensive.
- Jesse Stay
Hey Jessie - was hangin' with Damon today and your name came up. Damon ROCKS MY SOCKS.
- Mona Nomura
@jessethey should get indeed like a mute button for 30 days or something??
- Jaap Willem
from IM
Nice to see you still here, Robert. Hope the wife and kids are well.
- Martha
34 secs flat for my latest tweet. Thanks Paul and team for this!
- Jorge Escobar
wow, that makes actually want to use Twitter. I may just go tweet something.
- Mike Nencetti
It should be even faster than that Jorge, but our systems are getting near their limit. I hope to have it down to 1 sec sometime next month.
- Paul Buchheit
Yay! That's fantastic! I was getting really bored of manually refreshing it every time I tweeted. Especially from my phone. :)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Does this mean that Scoble can get smarter on FriendFeed again?
- Crutis
You are still working on Frienfeed (: how nice !
- Murat Can Demir
^ That's probably the best part of this announcement, TBH. Good point
- LANjackal
from IM
whoa, it took less than a minute. i accdently tested it but it's great :) thnx
- asli subasi
awesome, keep it up guys, i knew you would not let us down
- Iggy Mwangi
Great news, love the efforts still put in to FF.I use Google Reader to share into FF (PubSubHubBub) then FF to Twitter (now Real-Time). The URL shortener is great (ff.im), and so FF is central to my social lifestream. I don't care what Scoble says, FF is technically better and feature-rich.
- Keith Rowland
P.S. Conversations are still better here than on GReader, and you just can't have one on Twitter.
- Keith Rowland
You didn't break the FF Facebook app while you were at it, did you? It hasn't worked since.
- Tim Tyler
Oh, awesome!!! 12 seconds :) I can finally go back to Twitter (...okay no I can't I've turned into a Friendfeed junkie..) but prior it took hours upon hours for me to see a feed. Dumb I am, I never suspected a problem LMAO.
- H0llywoodWh0re
Paul ?? Twitter updates facebook status and then facebook creates a new feed here on friendfeed. So we have same entries both from twitter and facebook on friendfeed. Could you guys please work on how we can avoid duplicate entries? Thank you. ( If there's already a way to avoid this, pls let me know)
- Murat Can Demir
Cool, thanks, Paul! :-) RT Twitter updates have been missed. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
And just as I say that, I see my tweets are not coming into FF in real-time. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol. I just tweeted and it was here before I could get out of Tweetie and launch Safari... It's working :)
- Johnny Worthington
from iPhone
Johnny, cool. Just me then. It's still slow. Maybe it's FriendFeed then?
- Kol Tregaskes
It truncates retweets, even in the middle of a link...
- raphaeL
seems that there are only 140chars allowed for a tweet (on FF) and the new twitter retweets are being translated on the way through to old RT @name style - thus are too long.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
don't worry.. here in belgium it's even worse.. since I'm going on my bike to work, like 9 km, they decided to put all the snow on the bike track.. suckers...
- Jaap Willem
I think it makes perfect sense -- people have free time to look. No need for posts to have been done by a person -- they could have been scheduled by some sort of bot.
- Brian Sullivan
I bet it's automated. My old job used to always post their open jobs at 3AM. I know for a fact that the HR lady was not int the office at 3AM.
- Rochelle
the question is: was she ever in the office ;)
- Jaap Willem
This is clearly not my cat. If this was my cat he's have one arm shoved down into the printer trying to tear up all the internal whirling bits with his bare claws.
- Soup
Too Funny! Reminds me of the San Mateo Cat Shelter where one of the cats loves to sleep on top of the laster printer where the paper comes out...
- Greg Lato
1600+ to beat the FFundercats live chat thread. I think with this real time now on all threads we're going to see some truly epic comment numbers.
- Simon Wicks
Ivan, no the picture speaks for itself. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Petr, I have no idea what you mean, but thank you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol .. :] that, partially, might have been the purpose.... I don't know it exactly either. :] .. was I reflecting on a cat under the fax, and that it is hard to fax that way ... /?:] ... "underfaxing at its worst" ..
- Petr Buben
there ya have me ! :] .... see, to be honest with you, i saw this pic couple days ago, but i let it go, without posting it ..... what does that make me? :]
- Petr Buben
even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test)
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Hehe, Greg. Blimey! Erm, is that not far from 500 likes now? ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Bloody marvelous, Kol. Wish I could like it again... too cute (and help u to 500 likes).
- Roberto Bonini
I couldn't believe it when I logged on from the morning over posting it and saw it was at something 200 likes! You all have a strange fetish with cats and fax machines, hehe. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Am I the only one who saw this and their first thought was - My goodness did someone break that cats neck? It still freaks me out a little
- Steve C
Steve, it does look a little out of place, but cats are pretty bendy. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
They fax much better if you flatten them first. What?
- Kevin Pedraja
So we can put this post to rest now. :-) 505 likes final count, wow! :-D Good night all!
- Kol Tregaskes
My like is the last one so far :) - 509 afaik
- getalifejerk
did 3 people really un-like this? now at 506. wtf (edit: uh, oh, yeah, me and 2 + 506 others makes 509. dammit, jim, i'm an artist, not a mathematician)
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
One of the best funny cat pictures I've seen! :-)
- John Collis
Kristian, it appears to be. Hehe, John.
- Kol Tregaskes
- Maryaminaa
It's really only social convention which regards it as inappropriate, same with Xeroxing it, like one does with their b__tocks. Wait are we still talking about cats cats here or...
- sofarsoShawn
OMGosh 700+ likes now!! LOL. Thank you all 702 of you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
