It's worked good for us, lags sometimes but with Boxee we've been using it a lot.
- Juan Pablo González
works for me. For a lot of the territories outside the USA, iTunes has the biggest selection of video content, therefore to stream video to the 1080p machine in the corner via Apple TV makes sense despite its limitations
- Mel Buckpitt
Do you have to hack it to run Boxee, or will that work right out of the box?
- Josh Haley
CW, that's awesome. I always get great info from you. :) I might just have to re-purpose or sell my dinky htpc that can't handle 1080p (1080i yes, but barely) and get one of those. 399 retail? awesome!
- Josh Haley
I've installed Win7 on it and it rocks! Boxee, Hulu, iTunes.. it does it all.
- CW™
hey rodfather where is the rss button for that site? i cant find it
- Alfredo
I totally loved my Apple TV until it burned up and quit working. REALLY want another one, but not until they refresh the line with new models and functionality.
- Internet's Tad
Alfredo, no clue. Maybe there isn't one. The site has looked exactly the same as long as I can remember.
- Rodfather
I love mine. I use it daily. I do have some complaints about it's setup and I think it has some networking flaws. But I do love the damn thing.
- Andrew
I am wondering about this. I have a NAS which probably means I don't need Apple TV, right? I do need to fully set up my NAS but even still ... ?
- Amani
If your NAS and your TV are both DLNA-ready, then you should be good to go.
- Josh Haley
yep, they are ... figuring out how to get it to work is another whole step.
- Amani
from IM
We have separated Groups (the new name for "Rooms") into its own section, and we have renamed "filters" to "Saved searches" to make things simpler/clearer. Saved searches have simper URLs that can be shared, and friend list operations have all been added/cleaned up.
- Bret Taylor
Our primary goal was making Groups more useful again. The friend search / group search functionality is now separate and much easier to use.
- Bret Taylor
Thank you I love the new navigation.
- Russ Jackson
We have also added Atom feeds, Block, and a number of other small missing components.
- Bret Taylor
Organization is a good thing. Thanks and keep it coming. The subtle stuff will come. Color customization, etc. I think the main think is make it look dead easy, with the advanced user stuff just a little symbol or click away...
- kilbuda
i like being able to statically set the groups it shows me on the side now.
- rob friedman
Very cool. Much simpler. Any chance of being able to rearrange the blocks a la iGoogle in the future? Saved Searches were mighty convenient up at the top.
- Mark Trapp
Yes, rearranging and theming are both things we would like to do.
- Bret Taylor
@Rob, you still can set the groups that show up by clicking on "prefs" in the orange bar.
- Ana
Where did the create feed/imaginary friend substitute function go?
- Brian Sullivan
@Ana, I just said I liked it. :) I didn't see the ability to change what was shown there prior to this change. It just seemed like a random sampling of the groups I'm on before.
- rob friedman
Excellent. Very glad to see the "Browse/edit friends" link. I look forward to being able to rearrange to put my saved searches at the top.
- Elizabeth
Nice, but I use filters (well, now saved searches) more than I do my friend lists. Personally I prefer it the way it was, although I'd be happy just to have filters bumped up some (I got a _lot_ of lists to scroll past).
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
@Brian, I dont think the imaginary friend stuff is in the beta interface yet, I had to use the old UI to add a few yesterday.
- rob friedman
I like the new separation much more than old layout. Being able to rearrange placement of these blocks would be nice but not essential.
- Boris Gordon
Better, but you really gotta do something about that color scheme.
- mike fabio
Great work! Would be really nice to get the last modified time back next to the title of the groups. That saved me a lot of unnecessary clicks in the non-beta version.
- Christoph Studer
rob friendman -- I am talking about the create a feed function that allowed you to create the equivalent of imaginary friends.
- Brian Sullivan
I still think that the "My discussions" link under Friends should really be "My likes and comments", since there are some posts in that feed that are just ones I "liked" and have 0 comments, from me or anyone else. Would you call a post with no comments a "discussion"?
- Nathan Chase
Nathan: you are right, those should probably not be in that feed.
- Bret Taylor
We are still working out imaginary friends functionality. It is on our radar.
- Bret Taylor
Still wish there was a way to hide the top and side bars for use in a widget style browser window. Till then there's always greasemonkey http://is.gd/rBrh
- KyleHase
from twhirl
Thanks, Bret. You guys -- FF team and product -- are awesome!
- Eric Johnson
Thank you Thank you Thank you! Loving the beta and the FFteam's responsiveness
- Keith - @tsudo
Why is this showing up in my timeline? It says because one of the people I'm subscribed to Liked it. I'm not a member of the room and I'm not subscribed to the original poster (Sorry Bret!) But I swear I've turned off FoaF every day and this keeps happening.
- Paul Reynolds
Its enuf, men, give me more updated info plz.
- kelvin
from IM
We have more consistent terminology now; good. Now can we have more sophisticated feed-composition tools? How about one-touch "create group from saved search"? And how about fixing the "private group - standard FEED - public group" inconsistency?
- Karl Knechtel
I don't think we need full skinning capabilities - just a colour chooser for each coloured element. Also, the prefs link for Groups is a bit ugly. I don't like magically appearing links.
- Karl Knechtel
@patrick: every element of the beta UI should have a beta URL already. Any links that you click in posts are whatever URL is actually specified in the post.
- Karl Knechtel
Bret, this is great news. I'll leave the cosmetics to better people. I like things as is :)
- Deepak Singh
@Paul Reynolds: FoaF can be turned off?
- Karl Knechtel
We just pushed a fix for IE 7/8. If you were using IE, you should refresh. Sorry for the problems.
- Bret Taylor
I love it - especially the filters at the bottom (I use Lists, more often). That said, I like Kishore's suggestion -> let us choose the ordering of the boxes.
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Very good improvement, but would like to have another box of favorite friends. I wouldn't mind if I could set this up like the groups box, or if it would just remember who I clicked on the most.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Simpler... When is the mobile version coming out?
- Brian Kenyon
I would really appreciate if we could drag and drop items and boxes. I want to order all this.
- Stanislas Jourdan
While the new sidebar order is good, I'm having fun getting rid of two saved searches which only bring up an "edit new filter/search page. It'd be nice to have some way to edit/delete searches, like with the groups and friends boxes. Still waiting for someone to give me a tip on how to remove those two links from the list otherwise.
- George Hall (Australia)
George: Click the "Saved Searches" title, then select the feed from the left-hand side, then click Delete.
- Karl Knechtel
Looks good, and better handlings of groups. Instead of using the term "lists" it's way better to use saved searches. Although it's the same, new user won't get irritated.
- Ryo / Fuck Facebook
like it! only thing i don't like is that i have to scroll down everytime i wanna see my saves searches now...
- Peter Efland
Peter, yep to me that's in completely the wrong place. It's the second most important new feature on FF (behind real-time) and it's now "hidden" at the bottom. I have a large list of Groups and means big scroll down to the Saved Searches, which I use a LOT. Please either return them back to the second tab down or give us the option to select what sidebars we have and what order they appear on the bar?
- Kol Tregaskes
Bret, this is great, especially being able to see all of my groups. But I agree with just about everyone else, I'd prefer to have my saved searches above groups. There is still enough room to add subscriptions as well . . . maybe??
- Chris Loft
Nice change. Please sort out the color palette next :-)
- Alex Gawley
I like it, although the name filter was better, I think. Besides putting the Searches under Friends, it would be good if the Groups would change order in relation to recent activity, like it used to be.
- Alejandro
I like the way things are separated, now. However, I too have a lot of lists to scroll past to get to groups and saved searches. It would be nice to move the saved searches and groups above the lists. Definitely loving the beta, though!
- Seth Greenblatt
A number of feeds I set up are showing as Groups. Is that right? I set up a number of Twitter feeds (e.g. "Twitter - Al Yankovic") for nonFF Tweeters. It's a little confusing since now they're listed as a Group when their settings are "Standard Feed".
- CAJ, somewhere else
I guess feeds that aren't individuals are groups :-)
- Neil Saunders
separate groups section is good. now about labelling content sources rather than people... (would be nice to have this at least as an option: show user avatar OR show content source - then those of us who read by content are happy, and those who read by user are happy)
- Richard Akerman
Alejandro, I first thought I'd miss "filter" but actually prefer "saved searches" now. Well because they are, aren't they? Makes things easier to understand. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I use filters a lot and now on the HP Mini I have to scroll down the window to get to the next filter I want to check which then scrolls the page back up to the top after picking it. I have nine filters that I check probably once an hour. The page scrolling is tedious to go through. Is there a way you could move Filters up above Groups either manually or automatically based on most common use?
- Loren Heiny
Thank you! Navigating to groups/rooms was a pain.
- amygeek
Nice Job, I like it. It feels simpler and will be welcoming to new users.
- Poor Gamer
I also don't care for the name change at the top of the "Search results." The name of the search was better at least for how I use it. I can see the actual search criteria in the seach box. I don't need it in both places. Plus, when I'm clicking through a list of saved searches one at a time I often forget where I am in the list. The title helped me keep track.
- Loren Heiny
"Atom feeds" are not a "small missing components"!!! :) .. as on abay +++++AAAA+++AAAA for beta.FriendFeed
- Lucio Riccardi - CantorJF
Just noticed the new groups sidebar. Thank you!
- Carmen
Seems like the green box should be titled "Friend Lists" (in an actual Friends list, I'd expect to see Joe, Mary, Bob, etc. -- right now, there's a pretty big disconnect btw typical user expectations and what's appearing in that box). And maybe the browse/edit should then be titled "Browse/edit friend lists".
- Christopher Galtenberg
Even more unexpected is that when I click on Friends, I also see Groups. There should probably be another split, so we have Lists, Friends, and Groups. Bret, you guys are going to run out of colors soon! :)
- Daniel Sims
And would you *please* give us custom backgrounds and colors?
- Gaby K. Slezák
Karl: tried it, but it only brings up a new filter again. If one could edit one's "saved searches list by the NAME of the filter, it'd be easy to delete it. But your suggestion didn't bring up anything that could help me get rid of the two empty filters. Neither has a delete button.
- George Hall (Australia)
Karl:don't know whether my desktop wasn't showing the left-side bar, but late last night, I was looking at a list of my saved searches with the delete button active for all things in the list. Finally got rid of those two items that were only bringing up a search/filter page. That left-side bar with all listed searches is an elegant solution.
- George Hall (Australia)
Dont like it. No longer can get Twit Conversations to show up in Groups.. only in Home even if I add it to Groups!
- Greg
That's great news. I was fascinated with Shyftr's concept, but without the possibility to import my subscribed feeds, it was basically useless. Gonna give it a try now.
- Thomas Frütel
Leo, I think you could really make a strong push for people moving to FF.
- Ryan Cates
I've thrown myself on those rocks before. I keep wondering how long before people start wandering away from Twitter. I've gradually phased it out and phased in FF myself. But I still use Twitter to broadcast - I have 6x the followers there. The two are really symbiotes.
- Leo Laporte
I like the support for attached images very much!
- ※Fu※
symbiotes. i like that. mutually beneficial. totally agree Leo.
- Brian Daniel Eisenberg
I've wandered away from Twitter. They've could have rebuilt it from scratch by now. What gives?
- Dan Lovejoy
We need to crowd source the TWiTnation for something on the Mac to bring our Twitter follows over to FF.
- Ryan Cates
The new skin looks great. The "everyone" tab is pretty useless though, since the signal to noise ratio is so low. Do you have any plans to filter the feed to make it more useful?
- m13a
Pretty. It would be keen if the "share something" button could be somehow tucked away (while still being obvious), it takes up a big wad of vertical...
- ⓞnor
cool guys... when will kevin work his magic and give us a full blown "FriendfReader" ;-) ?
- Rob Hoeting
@John Lam: The regular friends' feed already has items in it that your friends liked or commented on.
- m13a
The prettiness I like. The fact that the tabs are now distributed in 3 different locations I'm not enthusiastic about (friends/me/everyone .... friend settings ... account/sign out). It feels to me like it adds complexity. When I leave the friends tab to find functional detail X, my thought process is something like "where is that pesky X buried again?" It's not like I think of my...
- j1m
Very nice, love seeing this product evolve while we use it.
- Loren Norman
I think I like the tab distribution. It separates the options and settings away from the main functionality. And it's pretty!
- Christopher Black
=j1m: I think making all your settings reachable from the "me" tab (which could be "my account" or something) would make sense. "Friend settings" is a weird phrase, too. Fortunately FF is simple enough that I can exhaustively search it to find any particular thing.
- ⓞnor
Looks neat. The clickable left-hand icons are non-obvious but I suppose it's not a feature you would want often anyway so I guess that's OK. The blue on top is a nice tone that gives a sense of location and identity around here, it also makes the logo look better and gives a focus on the the minimalist design and color below it. Not sure how often I'll use the "everyone" tab but...
- Philipp Lenssen
The light blue is also nice for setting off "mechanism" from "content".
- ⓞnor
I love the look but scrolling seems to be really slow and jerky on FriendFeed for some reason now. I'm running Windows XP SP2 with Firefox 2.0.0.12. Is anyone else seeing this?
- Tony Ruscoe
Scrolling OK on Mac OSX 10.5.2 with Safari 3.0.4
- Christopher Black
I like the way when I click on the flickr icon it dynamically creates a flickr tab. Very spiffy.
- j1m
Specifically, it would be nice if I could filter the "everyone" feed so that there are only English items in there. It would also be good if I could specify services not to include in that feed (such as twitter).
- m13a
...and by "English" I meant "English language". (Comment editing doesn't work for me in Opera on OS X.)
- m13a
"Specifically, it would be nice if I could filter the "everyone" feed so that there are only English items in there." Or perhaps everything defined in the browser's language options (http content negotiation).
- Philipp Lenssen
Looks good. Splitting the rss between me and friends would also be goodly. The Share Something could certainly move into the tabs, as well.
- Ashton
Just a thought on the tabs - any chance of an option to make the new tabs that are created (when you click on people, etc.) sticky, so's I can go back to them easily after checking back on my friends tab or whatever?
- Slippy "Threadsbane" Lane
Suddenly this post rises from its grave?
- Brian Sullivan
Profy is definitely excellent. I've been flirting with it for quite awhile now.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva, I hope you'll do more than flirt. ;) Thanks, Louis. I agree. And I think we'll add more converts as we roll out more features.
- Cyndy
Is Profy associated in any way with Google? Or maybe they are setting up their interface Google-ish to "shorten the path"? :)
- Andrés David Aparicio
from twhirl
Cyndy, I've written a few posts over there (ones that Svetlana liked, even). I just haven't had as much time as I'd like to dedicate to Profy. But, it's at the top of my list!
- Akiva Moskovitz
I have no blog so I think Profy is what I should be looking at in the mean time, any other suggestion?
- Gadiel Rivera
Andres, absolutely no affiliation with Google. I know that the interface was meant to be easy-to-use and clean-looking, so that fact alone may make it reminiscent of Google's.
- Cyndy
@Gadiel Absolutely take a look. We are still using invites just to track volume of sign-ups, so if you enter your email on the site, it should go right out. If you have any problems, LMK and I can send one as well.
- Cyndy
I like this idea of totally portable blogging.
- Eric Florenzano
@Cyndy I tested it and liked it a lot! I already sent some feedback. The whole portable blogging idea is quite impressive, I hope it works out. Good work!
- Andrés David Aparicio
Awesome Andres! The feedback goes directly to Svetlana, and I know that she replies to each and every one. Glad you like it!
- Cyndy
Thanks to everyone for the kind words about Profy here. @Andres, got your feedback - awesome, will write a reply today!
- Svetlana Gladkova
@Cyndy @Svetlana I just received the reply, that was fast! See you around.
- Andrés David Aparicio
Many congrats.... and nice post... No, no one is ever ready, and there isn't one correct answer on how to be a great dad, other than to try to be the best dad you can be....
- Chris Reed
Agree with Chris - no one is ever ready! Can't wait for the big day for you guys. I am the biggest cynic in the world (I have a certificate) but the day your kids are born is, I have to say, pretty f-ing amazing.
- Carla Thompson
Congrats Louis! As a father of two and soon to be three, I can tell you that your life will definitely change, but all of the changes are very positive. Every day brings something new and exciting. Best of luck to you.
- Tim Probst
This looks awesomesauce. Installing it now. ...via twhirl
- Corvida
I am really liking this. Goodbye AlertThingy.
- Carla Thompson
Very nice work! Much better than the current desktop alternatives.
- Aviv
just hijacking this to try to comment from MS24x7 - hope it doesn't have a "via MySocial 24x7" message attached... Edit: and no - it doesn't
- Frederic
@Aviv .. you would classify MySocial as a desktop app?
- Steven Hodson
It is already my most used app today. sticking with it until something better. I love the competion.
- Russellreno
@Steven - not so much, not in the traditional sense. Unlike Alert Thingy and the likes - MySocial 24x7 is only available to you when your browser is open and actually being used. It makes sense to do that, as opposed to interrupting the user even when the browser is closed and actual work needs to get done ;) A browser add-on is a more natural place for FriendFeed at this early stage.
- Aviv
You have to manually refresh MySocial 24x7. I'm conflicted about whether or not that is A Good Thing.
- ron k jeffries
@ron .. if that is the case then that would be the deal breaker for me
- Steven Hodson
Very easy to edit comments... a little too easy to delete comments
- engtech
Like all good things, it should be a toggle. I'm getting work done since it's not going HAY HAY LOOKATME LOOKATME. Soylent Networking apps are totally like needy girlfriends. (Well so are Adobe products with the non stop Registerrrr meeeee syndrome every 2.54 seconds) :)
- Eric Rice
I'd like it a lot better if it automatically loaded the next page when you scroll. That's the kill app for me with the webclient + greasemonkey.
- engtech
for some reason the feedburner feed for the podcast doesn't want to work in Google Reader, but works everywhere else - seems like a caching problem, but I can't figure it out. The problem seems to be with Google Reader as the feed is clearly valid and works everywhere else. If anybody wants to give it a try: http://feeds.feedburner.com/EliteTe...
- Frederic
@Jason - I really liked it and pissed because I couldn't partake - gotta do something to try and get a good quality mic ASAP :) .. you guys are all too nice - you need a dose of cranky in there
- Steven Hodson
Please do Steven! We need a good dose of crankiness to keep us grounded :)
- Frederic
anyone else find me particularly quiet? was it like that on the call, perhaps i'll use skype next time
- MG Siegler
MG, occasionally your voice would get significantly quieter than other times. and RE: Frederic and feedburner, it appears to be working now, so feel free to subscribe in Google Reader.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
if there would be one thing to tempt into developing again it would be to play with this .. but no .. no ... I'll leave that to others
- Steven Hodson
My original remote key had the word "dumb" in it. It made me smile, but I reset it anyway :) PS: Oops, after another reset of the key I get the first error: it says "502 Bad Gateway ... nginx/0.6.24" (at https://friendfeed.com/account...) PPS: Now it works again.
- Philipp Lenssen
Congrats! Please clarify - what is the maximum number of entries returned per fetch?
- Aviv
100 entries is the current maximum. We would prefer applications request the default number (30) unless there is a compelling reason to request more.
- Bret Taylor
Wow, amazing how fast you guys get stuff done.
- Ryan W
Love it. If only all APIs would come with a pre-wrapped PHP class. Why does the PHP class not precede functions with public or private by the way?
- Philipp Lenssen
You guys rock! I have a few ideas for extending and improving, though with how fast you all iterate I'm afraid my ideas are going to clash with your roadmap.
- Clint
Bret's news knocked my news off of the top of Techmeme today. It's on!
- DeWitt Clinton
Bret, just out of curiosity: on what technology stack the FF is built?
- Dmitriy Kopylenko
@Dmitriy: I believe the site is written in Python. No clue about database, server, or anything else. But I thought I'd answer with what I know (er, think I know ;-).
- Voyagerfan5761
Pretty sure it's MySQL, I think I've seen them talk about it before, and they are definitely using nginx as a frontend
- Benjamin Golub
I remember seeing some nginx (http server) errors a few days after they launched (edit: oops, just saw Benjamin's reference to nginx)
- Aviv
@Voyagerfan Thanks. Would be interesting to know if it's Django or just vanilla Python
- Dmitriy Kopylenko
Not Django, I asked that question a while back (when FF first opened up in beta). It is their own Python framework
- Benjamin Golub
Thanks Benjamin. Is there any reason to "roll your own", here?
- Dmitriy Kopylenko
I'm glad you posted a link for us non-techies so we could find out what the heck an API is/does! I'm excited to see what developers will come up with....I'm crossing my fingers for friendfeed mobile so I can easily use FF on my blackberry.
- Emily Miller
I really enjoyed the Python API. I have just added FF support to http://eventseer.net, an academic event tracker written in Django... Allows you to share the conferences and people you're keeping track of on FF. Thanks!
- Thomas Brox Røst
Agree with Emily Miller. FriendFeed mobile! I can read FriendFeed on mobile, but can't like or comment anything.
- Ontario Emperor
@emilymiller: if your phone supports IM you can use the jabber buddy friendfeed@imified.com to post comments to FF. We're still looking for some feedback on what other IM integrations make sense and are open to some feedback
- Anthony Webb
Yes, when you have to write custom SQL, the benefits of a framework start to fade away.
- Benjamin Golub
yeah, I have the read it later firefox ext, but i never "read it later"...it's now or never for me!
- Sarah Perez
I agree with sarah...if you wait till later then you just have more stuff to read then plus the save for later :) at least in my case and I am sure most like me "geeks" are in the same boat.
- (jeff)isageek
I do this in Google Reader. but like Sarah Perez, I rarely go back to read. Yep, now or never indeed :)
- Mike Reynolds
That's a link to an example of it working, not a page about the plugin, I haven't written anything up yet, I've just slapped this together in the last hour or so. There's a thread in the API forums here: http://groups.google.com/group...
- Glenn Slaven
http://www.friendfeedstats.com/bgolub... is mine, and you can set the display type, if you feel fancy you can set your duration by appending duration=5 (which would say the last 5 days) to the url. I am going to open source it soon so you all can see how easy it was
- Benjamin Golub
You really capitalize on this stuff, don't you?
- Brandon Titus
Really cool app, Ben! Thanks again for all the feedback this past week.
- Bret Taylor
Very nice! Good to see someone making cool apps with the newly released FF API.
- Scott Jarkoff
It wasn't done in a matter of hours. I actually had access to the API over the weekend. Overall the site only took like a day and half of working "here and there" on it.
- Benjamin Golub
Looks neat. I'm getting an error message when I search for just my nickname (not my full name) though.
- Philipp Lenssen
Ya, it's not a true search, It just takes in a nickname and trys to find that EXACT nickname in the database. So if you type philipp in there it will find you but if you type Philipp Lenssen it won't. I don't want it to be a search, and I won't be making it search for your actual name because many people can have the same actual name
- Benjamin Golub
That could be confusing: "Philipp Lenssen" is the name I see on top here, it's the name I see in my account name box, etc. Not to complain, just to give you feedback (and perhaps for all of us to determine good patterns with FF-API usage).
- Philipp Lenssen
I agree it could be confusing, but philipp is what you logged in with. I could easily add it in to say, look if only 1 person has that name (case insensitive) and redirect to that user page. But your nickname is meant to be pretty permament. Actually you used to be able to change your nickname on the FF site but they removed that after I asked what happens when someone changes their nickname? Everyone has a UUID too, but that is not a user facing thing.
- Benjamin Golub
@philipp ok I implemented a name search too. If you type Philipp Lenssen into the box it will redirect you to your page. I take exactly what you type in there and do a case insensitve lookup for the name if nothing shows up for your nickname.
- Benjamin Golub
Thats a fun stats service but more it has enlightened me that Twitter takes up 46% of the usage over all the services Friend Feed keeps track of. More than blog posts or google reader!
- MikeonTV
No wonder the FF team first implemented postback for Twitter, it is the most used service. My guess is blogs (wordpress/blogger/etc) will be next. Maybe Pownce too because they have an easy to use api.
- Benjamin Golub
