As a mentor, your job is not to dash the dream, but add realism to the endeavor. Don’t tell them they cant be astronauts, tell the entrepreneur that they have to study math to be an astronaut, and give them the direction to determine if they even like math.

Klout says I am not an expert on headphones. I think I am. But, my social media activity around the topic has not been sufficient to warrant notice by Klout or any other influence service. So here I sit, bereft, betrayed, bewailing and bemoaning — in short, a beloser.

My foray into blogging has been a long one. 14 years now, best I can count. Unfortunately, it took me too many of those years to start understanding the importance of email to any publisher and business. To start to “build a list” as they say. I have worked with social media as my primary career for going on five years now. And still to this day, when I talk to someone that needs marketing advice, I am more likely to talk to them about email strategy than Twitter strategy.

The business press is full of stories about how small companies are using social channels to attract and engage customers. But while there are plenty of individual success stories, the confidence in what to do specifically is not always clear for small business owners that are strapped for time and online marketing resources.

We often get questions about if and when brands can edit a Wikipedia article and I’d like to provide some background on Wikipedia’s format and clarify what is and is not an acceptable edit. I am not morally against brands editing Wikipedia articles and there are no rules against it but the acceptable instances are few and any edits should be done transparently and by someone educated in the format and citation process of Wikipedia.

I moderated a panel on gamification Blogworld NYC almost a year ago now. The basic concept of gamification is using the mechanics of games to other industries to improve business results. Often loyalty, keep customers coming back for more, is the best application.

Instead of focusing on what’s the next big platform, companies need to know if their organization set up on the back end (or internally) to move nimbly to take advantage of whatever emerges. Do the PR and marketing teams work together efficiently enough to explore the new platforms as they emerge? Is our IT department prepared to support new technologies – both inside and outside the firewall – if we want to start experimenting with them? Does leadership accept that early adoption and leadership in a space means learning lessons – and sometimes making mistakes – in public where people can see us do it? That’s more important to me than which platform comes next.
