Elastic tabstops - a better way to indent and align code - http://nickgravgaard.com/elastic...
Elastic tabstops - a better way to indent and align code
"Each cell ends with a tab character. A column block is a run of uninterrupted vertically adjacent cells. A column block is as wide as the widest piece of text in the cells it contains or a minimum width (plus padding). Text outside column blocks is ignored." The page includes a Java applet demo of a simple editor which uses this concept. This actually looks pretty sweet. - ⓞnor from Bookmarklet
You mean, tabs should be 4 spaces? That's okay but did you read this article? - ⓞnor
It would require changes to any editor; I see no reason those changes would be harder (or easier) to make to vi. (The changes are to how tabs are rendered; actual editing is unchanged.) - ⓞnor
Those are good points about time travel, but this could be a relatively incremental improvement that would actually make things a lot better. Not that I'm about to adopt it or anything (as far as I know it is implemented only in gedit), but table-based layout of code fits the way I move code around better than the line-at-a-time reindenting most editors use. Maybe a good intermediate solution would be an editor that works with this model but translates it to a more conventional format on exit. - ⓞnor
I wasn't smart enough to make the demo do anything interesting for me, but what does this do that you can't do with the emacs commands that in/outdent the selected block of text? - j1m
j1m: try making one of the variable names (or types) much longer than it currently is. You'll see the entire next column of stuff shift over to adapt without you having to do anything special. Also, since it's only the rendering that's changing, and not the number of space characters on every affected line (as would be the case if you indented everything with spaces), your revision history will be cleaner: only the line you meant to edit will show up as "changed". - Laurence Gonsalves
What Laurence said -- try editing the "try making this comment a bit longer" text, or the "makeThisFunctionNameLonger()" function in front of it, and watch how things reflow. Or, edit the name of the someDemoCode function and watch the argument list move. Some of these things could be done through fixups and block-move commands, but I think this is quicker and better. - ⓞnor
@Laurence, yeah, the bit about the revision history seems pretty valuable. - j1m
What I want is something that can reflow gracefully to variable column widths, so we don't have to argue about 80 columns vs. 100 vs. whatever all the time. - ⓞnor
This makes sense to me. Neat find. - Jason Wehmhoener
Very interesting idea, seen it a few times before. Sad thing is that it isn't really supported anywhere I can find. I only indent with tabs myself, spaces are evil. I hate having to retab files that have to few/many spaces to be readable. =) - Daniel Bruce

Let's look at that list...Star Trek, will undoubtedly suck...was doomed to suckage the moment they cast whatshisname as Spock...casting FAIL...Watchmen...is that even coming out this summer? I've heard rumblings that it will suck too. Transformers? Unless they focus on the transformers and not on the stupid humans that are here to be saved and not vice versa, it will suck...Monsters vs Aliens? haven't even heard of that one yet until now. - Alex Scoble

MTV talked to Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen star Megan Fox, who says that the sequel is "is 10 times as big, 10 times as many set pieces, explosions, and acrobatic stunts."She added that "Shia and I make out a little bit; I don't know if anyone wants to see that."Fox says that they have been reworking the script as it was written fast because of the writers strike, mainly to add... more... - mikepk

That's cringeworthy alright. - Roberto Bonini

Alex, I have hopes for Star Trek - mikepk
I have hopes for whatever the next Pixar movie is, the 2d stuff Lassiter is working on, the next Iron Man (although not great hopes, as origin stories are much easier to do right than sequels), a green lantern movie, captain america, etc. I have no hopes for Star Trek whatsoever. I can't stand the actor they got as Spock and that immediately ruins the movie for me. - Alex Scoble
Me too. Dosent Bay have a blog? I distinctly remember Reading it. - Roberto Bonini
Wow Alex. How about something you are looking forward to watching instead of dissing what anyone else might want to watch. - Robert Miller
I just took care of that Robert. And hey if you want to be disappointed by Mr. Bay yet again, that's your choice, but I reserve the right to call crap when I see it...and compared to what Transformers could have been and SHOULD have been, it was CRAP! No thanks on the sequel. - Alex Scoble
doesn't the new Terminator film come out the week before?? - Jez Arnold
What was everyone who was disappointed in Transformers expecting exactly? Have you re-watched the source material lately? Do you really expect something Shakespearean to come out of giant alien robots that can turn into cars and planes? It had a quick pace, explosions, and some witty dialogue while making me go 80's nostalgic - that's all I can ask of a summer blockbuster. - Eric P
Well, I am looking forward to all of the movies I listed. I am not sure Hollywood would do Green Lantern justice as each GL seems to be filled with serious angst and Hollywood seems to hate that in the Comic-to-Movie adaptations. I would pass on a Captain America movie, but that is because I never really got attached to the comic series. An IR-2 would be nice, but I have to agree (re: origins are easier) and hold up the Matrix trilogy as exhibit-A (One was o.k. while 2 and 3 sucked). - Robert Miller
I loved Transformers... - Mona Nomura
In the end, movies are never perfect to what we are able, and do, imagine and one actor or director should never take away from our personal enjoyment. If your goal is to enjoy, then you will and, conversely, if you goal is to critique and nit-pick, then you will never enjoy the movie and are disappointed before the title scene begins. Frankly, I watch movies to enjoy them and will continue to do so. - Robert Miller
I had a kid once say to me... "are you a transformer"...pointing to my hearing aid...lol... "what do ya turn into?" lol... I had to laugh at that... :o) he was only about 4, maybe 5.. his mum went beetroot red! :-D - Rob Sellen :o)
BTW, I also loved Transformers and Iron Man and bought, Bought, the movies. For me, that is a serious investment as I only buy those which I want to sit through several more times. Then again, I also like the "Dark Crystal" and that probably makes me a bit weird. :) - Robert Miller
I watched Transformers looking to be entertained, but in the end watched a cringeworthy lovefest between Shia and Megan...Who cares about the humans...it's all about the transformers, but do they center on the transformers? No...they center on all the GM cars and the babes/hunks of the week in Hollywood. It was just totally wrong. - Alex Scoble
LOL Rob. +1 - Robert Miller
Lol.. i loved it.. thought it was very,... um ... creative lol. :o) - Rob Sellen :o)

thats fucked. unless it was a shirt or somethiing - Caroline
[shrug] You can usually tell from the box what's inside (breaky things vs. clothes) and if the package is from say a clothing store or accountant, that's not a big deal. I saw on the site people are calling for this guy's job. Typical internet mob think; making statements with no facts. Loading a truck your precious packages get even more trampled. I used to stand on boxes marked 'fragile' to build my wall. I'd toss all kinds of small packages to get them behind my wall. - Anika
LOL...No milkman. Though, there is a company here in the valley that does to-residence dairy deliveries. - Robert Miller

I was an unloader for a season, Anika, I know what you mean. The fastest way to empty a truck is to start pulling on the wall of boxes and get out of the way while it falls. Good times. - Rob H.
Sorry, if you have to unload any of my trucks, Robert. I'd get really creative is sticking small packages into nooks. I'd also try to create walls were I could slide golf clubs, skis, architectural plans into the holes. My goal was to do that before I got busted for doing it. :) - Anika

I worked at UPS for a bit during my freshman year. God I hated that place. - Shawn Farner
I've seen much worse behavior from commercial airline employees stowing packages on planes, especially when it's USPS packages. They will actively slam it onto the belt, then when it falls off half way up, they will throw it toward the hold, when it misses and falls to the ground they try again until they realize they suck, then slam it back down on the belt in anger. I've seen this at multiple airports. - xero

CNBC says: "Apple's Jobs is (Still) Fine" and the author "spoke to Apple" - but why aren't there quotes? http://www.cnbc.com/id...
-crickets- ... I am very curious to hear people's thoughts about ease of publishing, journalistic integrity, and what constitutes a 'credible source' - You (edit | delete) - Mona Nomura
- more crickets- - Mike Lewis
Ya, tell me about it. - Mona Nomura from IM
I am very curious to hear people's thoughts about ease of publishing, journalistic integrity, and what constitutes a 'credible source' - Mona Nomura
My first thought is that although it's exceptionally sad to have the guy's health / illness / current condition dredged up so often in the press; this is also another situation in which Apple's tight-lipped approach does them, and him, no favors ... - Patrick Jordan
Jobs should be allowed to be "fine" until proven terminally ill. And medical blog gizmodo distances itself from their own "source". - Thomas Bøhm
by not addressing the issue... they're removing jobs from the stock issues that surround his personal health news...trying to separate themselves from a stock crash both now and in the future. - Joshua Schnell
I have an issue with the ease of publishing and irresponsible megaphoning. We're all gonna speculate, but is it our responsibility (readers) to become critical thinkers? What about people who aren't? CNBC is a major network and considered 'credible', yet he doesn't use quotes. And that's ok? - Mona Nomura
News agencies are far from responsible. They just publish sensational stories, and then retract them later if they have to... Frankly, I think Jobs as CEO is way overhyped. The lack of Apple officially responding is an attempt to convey that in my opinion. A day with out Jobs is on the horizon, and they're trying to officially remove the stock fluctuations that will occur on that news. - Joshua Schnell
CNBC is primarily talking about the stupid nature of Gizmodo´s piece, and they only need a link for that, not quotes. It´s like demanding a photo of me *not* falling down the stairs today. It´s Gizmodo you are after, which acted like Joshua describes. - Thomas Bøhm
I trust Giz more since: 1. they were correct about the nano. 2. they were correct about the new Macbook and 3. the iPhone (amongst others). CNBC's Jim Goldman was mistaken about his Macbook Air predictions, iPhone, and Zune. The "CNBC" label doesn't mean anything to me. Does it to you, Thomas? - Mona Nomura
That said: Josh I disagree. Apple = Jobs. Therefore, Apple - Jobs = Apple - (real) jobs. - Mona Nomura
Apple >> Jobs. Jobs is a charismatic leader, but he's no dummy, has known of his health risks for some time, and has done much to make sure there is a solid organization behind him. He knows that a good legacy will not be that Apple could be great only under his leadership, but that Apple could be built to be great without it. - LogEx
I basically agree with Jason: http://friendfeed.com/e... - Thomas Bøhm
(wrote my feedback in the thread) I am still curious as to what constitutes credible sources -- especially since news spreads like wild fire these days. - Mona Nomura
It's no surprise about the Gizmodo piece... when you get paid by the view... you tend to pick sensational stories... i'd do it too... lol - Joshua Schnell
Integrity and accountability go hand in hand. Predictions and news reporting are very different in this context. What is the downside for Gizmodo to publish rumors as news? - scott anderson
The lines are getting crossed, and that's my concern. CNBC - that is a 'trusted and credible source' (well specifically Goldman) has been incorrect two times that I know of about Apple stuff and most recently w/ Microsoft and the Zune phone - how responsible is that? Why is it ok for him to be wrong? As more publications become digitized, who do we trust? Or do we need to fact check all our sources since everyone's chasing headlines online? Who do I believe? - Mona Nomura
Was Goldman incorrect about a statement of fact in those three instances you cite (quotes would help) or was he incorrect about predictions he was making? If it was the former he could potentially lose his reputation and his job. If it was the latter and no statement of fact was made then it does not matter ethically if he was wrong. The story about Jobs health was a news report and not a prediction. I doubt that the Gizmodo blogger will be fired or that the SEC will investigate him or his source. - scott anderson
"In a just-aired broadcast on CNBC, the network's Jim Goldman reported that a source close to Apple's manufacturing facilities has confirmed that the company will launch its much rumored sub-notebook at Macworld in January and that it will also have a 3G iPhone on store shelves by June at the latest." http://www.cnbc.com/id... and http://www.appleinsider.com/article... So that's not reporting, but a prediction? - Mona Nomura from IM
I don't care who you are, what your background is or the number of awards you may have earned. I will respect your past work, but today is today. And wrong is wrong. - Mona Nomura
I would not classify the sub-notebook statement as a prediction by Goldberg but no statement of fact was made. Just like the Gizmodo report today it references a source with unknown credibility. Goldberg is not vouching for this source but Gizmodo qualifies their source with "previously reliable" yet qualifies the article with "Rumor:" That said, the headline of Goldberg's article today "Apple's Jobs is (Still) Fine" is not confirmed by a known source. - scott anderson
In my opinion both Gizmodo and CNBC should not have published these articles. - scott anderson
Thank you!! You're the first person to say "both" - Mona Nomura from IM

Apple's Jobs is (Still) Fine - Tech Check with Jim Goldman
Never mind the Gizmodo report was flimsy at best. Never mind the blog seemed to distance itself from its own report. Traders and their hair triggers swiftly yelled "Sell!" — and rumor overshadowed reason once again. I spoke to Apple after these headlines crossed and the company, which officially doesn't comment on rumors, reiterated the reasons it offered two weeks ago: Apple was pulling out of Macworld because the company didn't see the need to continue its investment in the expo, which included Steve Jobs' keynote. one anonymously-sourced blog post and AAPL loses $4 billion in market cap? somehow i don't think it's about pageviews. - Karim
when Engadget did the same in 2007, CNet interviewed Brian Lam of Gizmodo, who said that "the important thing on the juicy stories is to be extremely cautious, especially with Apple." riiiiiiight. http://news.cnet.com/Welcome... - Karim
I expect that any morning I will hear on the radio that Steve Jobs is dead. - CW™
Their SEC filing lists availability of "key personnel", including Jobs, as a risk factor -- wouldn't it be due diligence for them to have an estimate of his loss baked into their financial projections? Especially when the brand is so identified with him. Or are they really at the mercy of rumors? - Sprague D
Yuck. I find the whole death watch thing revolting. - Hayes Haugen
Where are his sources? If he is so certain that he is correct, how come he's not quoting Apple's PR department? (Kattie Cotton, to be exact) - Mona Nomura
If Gizmodo's report on Steve Job's declining health seemed "flimsy" (http://tinyurl.com/7gwc9k), Jim Goldman's post seems equally "flimsy". - James Hoang
I just re-read the thread and Allen? Giz already gets 8923749283749283 gajillion page views, daily. I don't think that's the case. @Hayes: This is more than a death watch. Did you actually read the article on Giz? @James: A-MEN. FINALLY someone with PERSPECTIVE - Mona Nomura
James, are you equating a report from journalist who has won several national journalism awards, who has worked for ABC, CNN, and NBC, who talked to a source at Apple -- with a blog post sourced from an anonymous tipster whose motives are unknown, and whose editor is a self-confessed rumor whore? Facts aside, are you claiming both sources are equally *credible?* - Karim
Karim? After this award winning journalist published the post basically damning Giz, bloggers, and yelling at us "I KNOW BEST AND YOU DON'T" http://www.cnbc.com/id... he then writes a piece stating: "It's a classic case of "no news is good news." Stop the rumors. And stop believing them. Until Apple says something different, or I get my hands on something tangible and trustworthy,... more... - Mona Nomura
And in his first piece, there were NO quotes. If he's an award winning journalist then where are the facts? Where are the quotes? Why should I believe him? And WHY do I need to think about these things when turning to 'credible' sources? So where does that leave us (the readers)? - Mona Nomura
Ok, sorry, you lost me :-D How is suggesting that people report *news* and not unsubstantiated *rumors* irresponsible? EDIT: or hypocritical, for that matter? - Karim
He is not reporting news either and contributing to the noise... - Mona Nomura
I personally just found a guy who majored in journalism -- where presumably they teach you stuff like journalistic ethics, how to source a story, fact checking, etc. -- and who has won awards for journalism, who has been in tech journalism since 1989, who has worked for several national news organizations, etc. ad nauseam, to be a *slightly* more credible witness than just some random guy on a blog. Am I too trusting? :-D - Karim
Gizmodo had their one anonymous source. Goldman says he called Apple. Did he quote anyone at Apple? No. Again, I'm assuming that when a respected tech journalist says he called a tech company, he actually called them. I'm also assuming that a quote wouldn't have been useful in this case, since it is Apple's policy *not to comment on rumors.* All they did (according to Goldman) was repeat the previously-given reasons for pulling out of Macworld, and state that nothing had changed. - Karim
Trust me, I want to believe that guy too. But he was wrong about the Macbook Air, iPhone, http://www.appleinsider.com/article... and the Zune phonehttp://www.google.com/search... (project pink). :(... more... - Mona Nomura
In addition, Goldman says he talked to anonymous sources inside Apple, and they told him nothing had changed. So (assuming he isn't making shit up) he is at least trying to corroborate what he's been told from MULTIPLE SOURCES. This also makes him more credible than Gizmodo and their one random guy. I'm guessing they teach that in Journalism 101. - Karim
Ghouls and grave robbers hovering like vultures, Karma will find you. - Phil Boiarski
If Goldman is lying, he is destroying his career, his reputation at pretty much every major media outlet in the country. Whereas Gizmodo's editor -- a self-confessed rumor whore -- is probably just going to say "oops, our source mislead us" and go back to blogging. Or better yet, they'll wait until Jobs actually dies and then run a "told you so" post. - Karim
So even if Goldman was wrong he gets away with creating, spreading rumors because of his awards? And he's not a hypocrite for calling out bloggers for doing the same thing? - Mona Nomura
You'd expect Apple to act in their own best interest and downplay whatever health issues Jobs might have. I expect Goldman to be honest because, as a "real" journalist concerned with ethics, he's not allowed to buy shares of Apple. That leaves the question of Gizmodo's anonymous source and whether they stand to benefit financially from tanking shares of Apple. Doubt you'll be reading about *that* in their blog. - Karim
Mona, going back to reply to comments -- it *is* news to say that the reason why a major tech stock got hammered today was an unsubstantiated rumor. it is also news to report on the efforts you made to confirm or deny the rumor. - Karim
Gawker's policies prohibits employees from trading stocks, taking trips on companies, invitations to events. Can you say the same for Goldman? Look, I don't work at Gawker, nor do I work for Gizmodo. But just because this guy has this award, that award, it doesn't mean anything to me. I look at the facts, assess the situation. I don't understand why this guy thinks he's better than the next when he's doing the same exact thing. - Mona Nomura
Mona I'm starting to wonder if we're looking at the same story. lol What rumors were spread by Goldman? I was simply saying that the stakes are higher if Goldman is wrong than if Gizmodo is wrong. If Goldman is wrong, either he is lying and his career is over, or someone at Apple is lying and the lawsuits begin. If Gizmodo is wrong, they'll just go "oops." It's just a blog, right? ;-) - Karim
That's thing that frustrates me!! Goldman has been wrong with the Macbook Air, the iPhone release and most recently the Zune phone and he's still a credible source? Wrong is wrong! And with the increase of digital media, it highly concerns me because I no longer know who or what to trust.... All I want is fact checking and not headline chasing and it seems like I'm asking for too much haha - Mona Nomura
lol Mona, in the 2nd Goldman story you linked to, he says flat out, he's not allowed to buy shares either. And I am not talking about Gawker/Gizmodo motivation here (though *that* can be questioned as well), but rather the motivation of the *anonymous tipster.* If Goldman calls up Apple, we *know* what Apple's motivation is -- to not comment, to downplay concerns. But this anonymous tipster at Gizmodo -- what's his motivation? Does he stand to gain financially? - Karim
But the same thing is said for the corporations - they're protecting themselves financially, too. LOL So is it now up to us (the readers) to be critical thinkers and not allow publications to manipulate us like this? What does this mean for people like me who's subscribed to a lot of these said "credible sources"? - Mona Nomura
I'm honestly ignorant of how Goldman was wrong with the Macbook Air, iPhone etc. but honestly I have more respect for him picking up the phone and calling Apple, and getting confirmation from multiple sources, vs. Gizmodo's single tipster. Likewise Goldman managed to get Apple to say *something,* even if it was repeating what they had already said, vs. Gizmodo's "Apple did not comment on this story after being contacted." - Karim
lack of direct quotes aside, what Goldman did, by calling up Apple and attempting to confirm the rumor, fell into the category of fact-checking. What Gizmodo did, by reporting a rumor from a single source, fell into the category of rumor-mongering. I honestly can't see how the two are equal. - Karim
How do you know they relied on a single tipster Karim - because they didn't go into detail who and how many people they contacted? If this was the first time Giz leaked some Apple news w/ no history of being correct, I would not believe them. But they were right three out of the three times from one source, as opposed to Goldman's multiple sources that were incorrect. Not only that, he was most recently wrong about the Zune phone - a totally different company. How credible are his sources? - Mona Nomura
the article implies a single tipster. it refers to "a previously reliable source" (singular), "this source" (singular), "our Deep Throat" (singular). there's no reason to believe they had multiple sources. again, i know *nothing* about Goldman being "wrong" about the Zune phone -- I don't know whether the context was a prediction, a rumor, a statement of fact or what. feel free to pass along a link... - Karim
If you want to talk track record, last year, the *exact same* author at Gizmodo, Jesus Diaz, got pwned by some 16-year-old punk in his parents' basement. see http://www.smh.com.au/news... and http://www.stuff.co.nz/4154988.... how was Gizmodo convinced that they had a credible rumor source for Apple? The 16-year-old kid just signed his email with, "Tom Oliveri, Google Marketing Product Manager." That's all. - Karim
they ran a story about Apple products because their so-called source *claimed* to work for Google. Guess that made him unimpeachable. Gizmodo then ran a half-assed non-apology (http://gizmodo.com/286511...) that basically said, welp, we got duped, shit happens. - Karim

I'm in Palo Alto. Just had yogurt at shop that Steve Jobs eats at frequently. They said he was in a couple of days ago and is in great health.

Yeah, I saw him last month eating spicy Indian food and swiping through his black iPhone. He looked perfectly fine. - Mason Lee
Are you stalking him or is this a 'walk a mile in his shoes' sort of thing? - Anika

Why is it that Apple isn't confirming or denying anything do you think, Robert? - Mona Nomura
Mona: Apple won't confirm or deny anything. Try asking them whether Steve Jobs is CEO. I bet they wouldn't confirm or deny that. - Robert Scoble
@Mona N. Because they believe it's no one's business if Steve sneezes. - Dominic Jones
The real CEO is clearly Dick Cheney - Andrew Dobrow
So, he's still alive? ;) BTW, what is THE interview you wish to make in 2009? - Konstantin
But clearly, he is not well... isn't it about time they say SOMETHING? :\ - Mona Nomura
Then what? Sell your stock? If Apple's value is so wrapped around one person isn't that a clear risk already? - Hayes Haugen
Konstantin: 1. Barack Obama. 2. Steve Jobs. 3. Steve Ballmer. 4. Mark Zuckerberg. 5. Bret Taylor. 6. Evan Williams. 7. Jonathan Ives. 8. Vic Gundotra. 9. Barack's CTO. 10. A bunch of geeks who I don't know but who are changing the world. - Robert Scoble
It has nothing to do with stock, it's handling smooth transitions IF there is something wrong so we (consumers) have confidence in them (Apple). - Mona Nomura
Mona: we're all dying. I know a lot of people who have died that were very healthy. Or seemed to be. Marc Orchant anyone? I don't know that Steve isn't well. Having cancer can cause you to live healthy and lose weight. But, I already assume the dude will die. So will I. Until he's ready to talk I have to assume he's fine. Obviously he's not bedridden if he's coming into yogurt stores. - Robert Scoble
Red Mango or Fraiche? I prefer Red Mango on University. - Randy Ksar from twhirl
Randy: I'm partial to Fraiche. Maybe we need a taste-off? :-) - Robert Scoble
We're all speculating and won't know for sure until Steve Jobs either steps down or retires. Either which way, this is really bad on Apple's part because they are (to me) encouraging rumors and speculation, irresponsible journalism, and publishing. The question is: Are we ok with that? - Mona Nomura
Mona: Apple is too secretive about everything. But that's who they are and they probably know that this publicity is good for them. It keeps us all wondering what the real story is. Guarantees everyone will attend Jobs' next press conference. - Robert Scoble
If people are getting worried when a CEO is getting thin, shouldn't we be more worried over weight CEOs? They are more all of a heart attack time-bomb than SJ is a health risk. Why don't we ask all those fat CEOs to disclose *their* health record? - Clarence Chiang
Clarence: yes. +1000. - Robert Scoble
I'm not worried about him. Is no one familiar with the old adage, "An Apple a day keeps the Doctor away." - Kevin Murray
Clarence: It's not just any CEO. It is Steve Jobs. Do you think his predecessor will generate this much news? Robert: I understand that, but that is so not ok, in my book. - Mona Nomura
Mona: Apple doesn't listen to me on PR issues either. Heheh. - Robert Scoble
hahhahahhahhahha - Mona Nomura
There's a Red Mango here, and I've had Fraiche. I prefer Fraiche. - Jesse Stay
I find myself wondering if SJ has an Alcor policy. - Michael R. Bernstein
Who is Steve Jobs? - Steve Rubel
Do they even make apple yogurt? It probably tastes better if you eat it with a mock turtle neck on. - Keith Beucler
Great reporting Robert. The real losers here are the gossip sites like Gizmodo who perpetuate rumors with "anonymous sources" who are "100 %" correct. - James
So I was there today with Robert when he got the scoop. Spiderman's frenemy James Defranco was spotted there. http://www.fraicheyogurt.com/ - Ross Mayfield
Why don't u interview him? I can see it now... "so who are you?" - mal
That place is buzzing - why hasn't anyone else reported seeing him there? - Jesse Stay
Hope he's well. In any case, despite all the coverage, what I haven't heard about is whether Apple's doing anything at CES? Do they usually exhibit? CES isn't something I've paid any attention to in the past but if Apple's becoming (as some are saying) the new Sony, wouldn't CES be important? - Gordon Vaughan
Apple never goes to CES. Apple has its own show from now on: it's called its network of stores and Engadget. :-) - Robert Scoble
Schnozberry! Who's ever heard of a schnozberry? - Kerri
Now that Jobs has made his January 5 announcement, we can all reflect. In my view, even if they didn't know anything, Apple & Jobs should have made some sort of statement in December, when the Macworld announcement was made. It wouldn't have been perfect, especially since they may not have known about the hormonal imbalance at the time, but better to say something than nothing. If nothing else, it would have kept Robert out of the yogurt shop. :) - Ontario Emperor

Damn I hate my canon 5d so much. 60% of my shots today are returning error 99 when they try to write to the card. This camera is such a piece of crap. And a month after they were supposed to ship the mark 2 I still haven't received my preorder. I hate canon so much right now.

Thomas, have you tried reformatting the CF card, or using a different CF card? - David Sifry
This has nothing to do with your 5D. Which lens? That is a lens communication error. I used to get this with my 70-200mm L IS. Cleaning the connectors on the back of the lens is your first start. Check to see if the lens that this is happening with is known to have this problem. Some older lenses require a tune up by Canon. - Jim Goldstein
Amazon is still showing kits available - http://astore.amazon.com/saouri-... - planetMitch
Yeah I don't think it's the lens or the cards. I'm getting the same error on three different cards and on my 135mm, 50mm, 24mm and 14mm. The power keeps going out on the camera as well with the only way to revive it being to remove and reinsert the battery. - Thomas Hawk

Yeah, I'm grumpy. I expect more from a $3,000 camera. These problems are costing me a lot of time today. I'm going to have to bail on John Candy's grave and just head straight to Peterson's automotive museum. - Thomas Hawk
"Good, I can feel your anger. Take your D3X. Press that shutter down with all of your hatred, and your journey towards Nikon will be complete!" - Johnny Worthington
Thomas -- I thought your 5D had already exceed by a long shot its expected shutter life? By that standard you have already received your $3000 worth of value? - Brian Sullivan
Hey, thanks for that link joakim, I just used a pencil eraser on the contacts and will see if that helps. - Thomas Hawk
Ok, not so grumpy anymore. First, thanks a million joakim for that link. The eraser trick worked and my error 99 problems are gone. 2nd, Peterson's automotive museum is spectacular. Highly recommended if you like to shoot fine automobiles! - Thomas Hawk

still around. Out in Angeles National Forest with dial up only access that's barely dial up at that. That and focusing on shooting alot. My 99 errors have returned to my 5D. Really sucks. Going to try and shoot Bukowski's grave today, the MONA (finally) and meeting up with a guy in Long Beach at 3pm to shoot some industrial stuff down there tonight. Should be a good day. Shot Ventura Blvd. on Christmas Eve night. The Cadillac dealership there is fantastic. - Thomas Hawk
Ha! I was thinking of heading up to Angeles to do a photowalk with the kids. - Anika
my 5D Mark II is still on backorder with Wolf. I wouldn't mind near as much if my current 5D wasn't handling so badly. It's really frustrating when you can't get 60% of your shots. It really slows things down. - Thomas Hawk
send it my way, I pay top dollar ;o) - sofarsoShawn
time to upgrade to Nikon!!!... - Fernando
My Error 99 problem has gone from bad to worse on my 5D. i can barely get the camera on any more. I have to take the battery out and reinsert it about 30 times in order to get the power on the camera. As soon as I get my new Mark II this sick puppy is going in for repair. Fortunately I bought a 3 year warranty on it from Mack. Hopefully Mack honors the warranty as the camera's only a year and a half old. - Thomas Hawk
Officially giving up on my 5D. Shooting neon signs this afternoon/tonight with my 10D. - Thomas Hawk

Blow into the iBreath and your iPod plays a blood-alcohol alert - Los Angeles Times
"Now the iPod can answer the question: Am iDrunk? A new product called the iBreath turns Apple Inc.'s iPod into an alcohol breathalyzer. The $79 accessory plugs into the base of the iPod and functions like a field sobriety test. The person using the iBreath exhales into a retractable "blow wand" and the internal sensor measures the blood-alcohol content. Within two seconds, it displays the results on an LED screen. A reading of 0.08 or above sets off an alarm, signaling a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit in all 50 states" - RAPatton from Bookmarklet
"Moreover, Dean-Mooney questions the accuracy of the device. Law enforcement agents use instruments that are calibrated monthly, and accurate readings require the person taking a field sobriety test to blow "deep lung air," she said. iBreath claims to offer results in as little as five seconds within 0.01% accuracy. "I'm afraid it not only causes young people to use it as a training... more... - RAPatton

A car breathalyzer is one of the last barriers to drunk driving prevention for DUI offenders who want to stay out of jail. Canon's 50mm f/1.2 lens is a piece of crap. I kick myself almost every day for spending so much money on this lens. How can such an expensive lens suck so badly at something as simple as autofocus?
Was considering getting that among others, with a Cannon 50D. What are you using it with? - Kevin Mullett
yeah too expensive to be failing like that... my 1.8 also sucks at autofocus but its a 70 dollars one. hehehe - Oscar Juarez
So which 50mm do you recommend? the f/1.4? - Alex Scoble
Try this for serious lens review: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews... - Pierre
I was considering getting the f/1.4 it is better at autofocus then the 1.8? - Mark Groves
Yeah, I was much happier with my f/1.4 for a helluva less amount of money. I'm using the f/1.2 on a 5d. What use is buying a fast expensive lens to shoot in low light if it's too dark to manual focus in low light and the thing can't autofocus for crap. This lens is my biggest regret of any photographic purchase I've ever made. - Thomas Hawk
I didn't know anyone even made a f/1.2 autofocus lens. It seems technically very, very difficult. - Kevin Fox
And that's saying a lot...because as far as I know you've made a lot of photographic purchases...well you sure saved me some money for whenever I get a Rebel. - Alex Scoble
That sucks big time. The AF on my Nikkor 1.8 is also meh, but like Oscar said both of us paid about a fifth of what you did for the 1.2. - Josh
Thomas do you have the same problems with your 1.2 in normal lighting conditions or just low-light? If it is only low-light it might not be just the lens. Just a thought. - Kenton
1.2 is a quick lens, and should kick ass in low light. maybe defective? - Morgan Haley
was it an 'L' lens? - Morgan Haley
Low light autofocus sucks the most, but even in more reasonable light I've still been unhappy. I might not bitch so much if I only paid a couple hundred bucks or so, but when you pay $1,600 for L Series glass you really should get more than the performance that I've gotten out of this lens. - Thomas Hawk
I'll agree that it does suck at focusing in low light, but the back focus issues some have hasn't been a problem for me. I do love the lens for normal use. I used to have the 50 1.4 too it was a great lens, far and away better than the 1.8 (some asked in this thread). I just got my 5DMII, so I'll be re-evaluating it on that body shortly... - Ryan
Right. The jump from the f/1.8 to the f/1.4 represents great value. But the jump from the f/1.4 to the f/1.2 does not. A big part of the appeal of f/1.2 is to shoot in low light in my opinion and for the money I give the f/1.2 a fail in this regard. Will be interested in how it handles with your m2 - as well as mine if I can ever get one. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas, I've found that on a 5D, the 50mm f/1.2 only focuses reliably when using the center AF point (i.e. the sole cross-type AF sensor). This speaks more to the AF system in the 5D than the lens, methinks. FWIW, I've generally been happy with the sharpness of the low-light photos I've taken at f/1.2: http://bit.ly/50mm-f1... - Jason Chen
if it's the L lens, Canon should replace or fix it for you because it sounds like it's not working as it was designed to work. i'm sure you have looked into this deeper than anyone, but just wanted to make sure you weren't forgetting that the lens is supposed to kick all ass. when it fails to do so, i'd tell Canon. the 'L' lens mystique is something like like to maintain. if that doesn't work, i'll buy it from you for $50 bucks. - Morgan Haley
TH - don't chuck it in until you pay with the low light on the 5d'II ;) - Phill Price
The 50 f1.4 on the 5DMkII is awesome - I used it on my 350D until I received the 5DMkII yesterday - cheez I love Full-Frame! - meckimac
