The Great Google Wave invite thread. Anyone who wants an invite post your Gmail address here and anyone who has invites available please use to invite the people on this list. There are also a bunch of requests in the Invites group here: http://friendfeed.com/invites
I have a few but holding them for a few people who have already asked me. I'm at kolint [at] googlewave [dot] com btw. A pain I know but if you can, could you update your comment when you have an account or just delete your comment. Ta! :-) EDIT: Try this site for invites: http://googlewaveinvites.com/
- Kol Tregaskes
Are people on this list getting invites or at least been told they have an invite on the way? You might have to be patient, it could take a long time for one to come through.
- Kol Tregaskes
Adam, yep agree. Maybe because I did that (month ago though) helped me get mine through from Vijay so quickly!
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol, the invitation process seems to be based on nominations. For example, everytime someone nominates/invites you, you get bumped up the queue for an account until you're at the top and you get sent an invite by the team
- Ysabel Legaspi
Ysabel, ah I see, So lots of people must have nominated me. Darn, so a few users I have nominated could be waiting a looooong time. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
if that voting system is right I'm very annoyed. I asked for an invite months ago, now all the numpties are all over it I'm not going to get a look in. It's like I've been sat at the front of a shop queue and everyone's just walking right past me into the shop. I am British but I detest both queuing and waiting, so this is pretty tough going
- Toby Graham
Like most other people, yesterday I wasn't aware of that I «needed» a Google Wave invitation this badly...but now I am!!! quackofdawn at gmail dot com

neternity@gmail.com and i promise to send a wave of 100,901 twitter followers to your doorstep each of whom will have averaged 1 tweet in their existence - this might not get me an invite but surely it will get some notice - must have that something special - my google wave invite special sauce ingredient is twitter juice PS Not to be construed as an offer, not valid in any of the 53 US states, do not try this at home, caution: contents are hot.
- Ross Button

How does anyone know if someone has already been invited? You could go back and edit your comment when you receive an invitation, but since that takes days, it could be ages before you know.
- marziah
I've not even had a nomination, RK. At google dot com I'm suezanne , in the event anyone wants to make a nomination. I've asked before on friendfeed. It's kind of humiliating to beg.

"Congratulations - I have no idea who you are, but I know exactly how you feel right now. You should be really proud - it's a ton of work to make something like this happen (even if you downplay it as "indie"). Any success is great success! Way to go!"
- James Hull
(My second tab in the screenshot is embarrassing though, heh)
- Thomas Bøhm
Install it for Firefox first, then traverse trough your Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/[obscure string]/extensions/feedly@devHD/content/app and just run safari.htm :) The image base href needs fixing though. Feedly will officially launch for Safari at a later time, but until then you can bookmark this local file.
- Thomas Bøhm
@thbo nice! see http://bit.ly/3W7GV on how to get the pictures right. We should be able to push something a little less alpha next week.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
Interesting. I think I'll wait for the official version, which I can't wait for. The only reason I open up Firefox now is for Feedly.
- James Hull
Update: we just pushed out patch 2.0a.016. Next time you restart firefox, the safari.htm file will be updated to a new version which should have a fix to the image issue. Back and email are still not implemented yet though.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
@edwk Understanding that it´s pre-alpha I´m just noting that sharing articles to Friendfeed or Tumblr don´t seem to work even though I´m logged in both in Firefox and Safari. And Safari keyboard shortcuts like cmd+t for a new tab is overridden by feedly at the moment (refresh).
- Thomas Bøhm
I'm sure you figured out the different wasy to take a screen shot Thomas... but i still recommend Skitch for OSX.
- Frankie Warren
Thomas...Thanks for the feedback. Will look into these during the week end. Please let us know if you run into any other issues.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
@cecily this is most likely because you are running 2.0a or 2.x. safari.htm is available in the 2.x version which is available on www.feedly.com
- Edwin Khodabakchian
"Awesome, UNKs been doing this for awhile and I've always felt it worked better than the long News posts. Thanks for making the change (and for the links)"
- James Hull
augmented reality Twitter (Twitter) apps may be coming to your phone soon enough. Local Twitter search provider Tweetmondo is teaming up with augmented reality service Layar, the company has announced on its blog, bringing augmented reality Tweets to phones running Google Android. Later, they plan to bring the service to iPhones. They’ve also posted the video below demoing Layar’s existing technology.

This was a brochure for college students back in 1992 that advertised the Mac IIci and one of the first PowerBooks. Yes, I used to be an Apple shill! :-)
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
WOW! That's hilarious! What a cool thing to have.
- James Hull
Ah. 1992. I would love to go back in time to 1992 with a Macbook Pro or something, and show you some tech from the future and then take it off you and bugger off back to the future.
- Mark
You were a girl in 1992? Oh wait - you mean you were the guy on the LEFT! :) :)
- Lee Drake
If my dad was in an Apple ad my cool factor for my dad would go up like forty some odd notches lol
- Holden Page
You never know what the future will bring...
- Seth Eagelfeld
Woz and I talked later about the Mac IIcx's. They were so easy to upgrade. I miss that era of computers.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
I remember attending Apple's IIci announcement at the Universal Ampitheater in October 1990? Later in the day I met with Guy Kawasaki and discussed his ideas for a board game. I ordered a IIci on the developer's discount at just over $4600. I still have it and the copy of the check I used to pay for it.
- Mike Shulman
Like the ad. I was testing FF email feature yesterday. Did you send from your phone or desktop?
- Nakeva Corothers
Interesting how Apple has always worked so hard going after the college/university student market, especially in the context of the way they dominate sales of computers over the $1000 mark now. It's not only targeting young minds, it's also targeting young minds that are disproportionately likely to be wealthier than average in their careers and invest in themselves.
- Jed White
This is great. I love the come-hither pose.

One of the comments on the articles: "Wow - talk about insensitive comments. Someone's dead, and all people can comment on is the missing hardware?"
- Victor Ganata
Victor, doesn't shock me one bit sadly
- Holden Page
I'm still in shock over this article. One of the commenters speculated that maybe the guy was thrown out the window instead of jumping out himself. It makes me sad to read that the US hasn't picked up on the news much either.
- Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
I wonder what SJ has to say about this. No amount of secret hype and embargo is worth what in effect is a toy. Wonder if they saved the guy's liver.
- Matthew DeVries
Oh, that is so sad. Life > the ability to market gadgetry.
- joey
One more reason outsourcing to third world countries is a bad idea....
- Jeff P. Henderson

I am going to go out on a limb here and guess he had help throwing himself off that balcony. But then I'm always looking for the conspiracy in everything.
- Geoff Schultz
Can you imagine U.S.A. officials blocking foreign reporters from taking pictures of Skid Row, Cabrini Green, the whole of Appalachia, or Detroit?
- Matthew DeVries
Matthew, considering skid row, Cabrini Green, Appalachia, and Detroit, would that make the U.S. a third world country, too?
- Victor Ganata
Victor - No, because we don't try to hide those places, and we let any damn person who asks take a picture of the place.
- Matthew DeVries
I just don't think the presence of slums really has much to do with how industrialized a nation is, and a country can certainly be industrialized even if their citizens don't have many civil liberties.
- Victor Ganata
well shit, it's certain. Debate over. If only I'd thought to use an intractable word with no leeway.... You'd think I'd be better at internetting by now.
- Matthew DeVries
no, im paying a decent price for my kindle books, considering the reduced cost of the publisher. so no thanks.
- sean percival
I paid for mine so Amazon will give me my money back? If they add ads to the device I am going back to the paper.
- petar vucetin
I'd tolerate them if, and only if they weren't plastering every single page of the said eBook, and they were inconspicuously placed (e.g. on a page towards the back/appendix, or just after an index page). Otherwise, I agree with James and Rui.
- Tyson Key
The business model is not set up for books to be free - at least now.
- Steve Rubel
from email
ebook readers need to get a lot quicker before they start putting ads in them. And I never want ads in my books, they might be ok in periodicals and the like.
- Phil Maxwell
I so wish I had the time to play this. And I have no idea why everyone is giving them grief about WWII - what else would you do?

"It’s gonna be like Michael Corleone in the Godfather films, the entire story from beginning to end, you see where he starts, how he becomes who he becomes, and where that takes him. The Dark Knight showed you can take a comic book property and make a serious film, and I think the studios are ready to listen to bigger ideas now."
- James Hull
from Bookmarklet
This is old news, but they recently revealed the director - Layer Cake guy. I could use 8 hours of a good Superman story.
- James Hull
This is turning into a first-class mess for Amazon (the ironic choice of books doesn't help them either; the only thing worse might have been to add Fahrenheit 451 to the mix). But what it really comes down to is cognitive dissonance between license and purchase. Amazon unsurprisingly uses the terms "buy" and "purchase" to describe how you get books on the Kindle, but the correct term...
- Joel Webber
Another way of looking at it: If this were a site where Amazon allowed you to pay for the right to read a book online (please ignore for a moment how easy that would be to copy), many fewer people would cry foul (this happens on Rhapsody all the time). But when you feel you've "purchased" something, the natural mental model for having it taken away is of having an object wrested from your hands by the original seller.
- Joel Webber
Wow, that's crazy. Glad to see they've updated their policy on this (hopefully).
- James Hull
"Yeah, totally agree about this. I've found lots of different blogs and sites that I didn't know existed. Although I disagree about emailing it, re-posting/sharing etc. like other sites. I like the fact that it's so simple and doesn't have a ton of features. I already have tools that do that better. I'm using LazyFeed to discover not to share."
- James Hull
"Thanks for the heads up on this. I’d love to hear more about your plans and methods for incorporating video onto your site. I keep going back and forth between QT and Flash on my own site."
- James Hull
Matt, the code lazyrww works right now. I want to get more.
- Louis Gray
Just looked down, thanks guys and sorry. :)
- Matt Ruiz
hmm, since you recommend it so highly...i'll give it a day or two
- Zee.
Starting to use Seesmic Web more as well. Love that's available via the web now. I'm looking forward to the day I have no client apps.
- Hutch Carpenter
I'd like to try out lazyfeed any invites up for grabs?
- Bhowmik Shah
Thanks Matt ... just getting on to it :)
- Bhowmik Shah
I wish Seesmic Web had some of the same features HootSuite has (or vice versa)
- Rob Williams
Do you use a desktop client for email?
- Kevin Fox
from iPhone
I do, Kevin. I still use Mail.app and haven't yet converted over to GMail.
- Louis Gray
google reader over feedly? blasphemy
- Zach Landes
Chris, re: Lazyfeed, I think you have to move the tags, and the individual articles, that represent what you're most interested in, over to the left by using "add". I still haven't figured it out yet, but I'm intrigued.
- Laura Norvig
Zach, tell Edwin to make Feedly for Safari, and we will talk.
- Louis Gray
i can live in one tab - louisgray.com
- Allen Stern
Lazyfeed will never be a tool I find useful. If I want to explore a topic I'll turn to a search engine. I'm not interested in tracking tags.
- Mitch
okay, someone says they can do something on 4 tabs and i think of LSD. i obviously need an intervention.
- Joe Silence is not dead
Allen, I salute you. But you will get very bored over time.
- Louis Gray
what's lazyfeed? they are so lasy that they forget an introduction to their product? better tool than ff on conversation?
- xiawinter
Louis: I see no tab for Gmail. Hmmm. Friendfeed takes care of your messages? Virtual assistant? Office factotum? Hard as I try, I can't run away from my Gmail. I need intervention, too?
- jan geronimo
Jan, I continue to use Apple Mail for my e-mail. Haven't fully switched over to GMail yet.
- Louis Gray
This promotional code has expired.. another one, guys? ;-)) I'm in a hurry to try this one.. can change my online life
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
I need to try LazyFeed again, I didn't think much of it. What did I miss?
- Kol Tregaskes
seesmic web is great, but I wish it had the same keyboard shortcuts as google reader. j and k for example...
- perry whitecage
Lazyfeed is pretty good Louis, but they are still somewhat reliant on tags (I tried it out). What I'm working on (and very interested in getting funding towards) is a framework that uses cutting edge semantic algorithms (Zemanta or other) as a tag extractor, then use a user trained memory for finding internet info you may be interested in. Lazyfeed has a great head start on the UI, all they need to do is partner with a good semantic company.
- Mark Essel
glad to hear we became one of your tabs, that's a huge responsibility! please keep suggestions of improvements coming my way!
- Loic Le Meur
I believe Louis' dimensionality prohibits him from living in 4 tabs.
- Mark Essel
from iPhone
Ah but someday we can all once again live in OneTab (Note: I own OneTab.com that is conceptually being wireframed right now).
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I am down to 3 tabs at the moment: Feedly, Peoplebrowsr and Friendfeed. (I prefer Feedly to Google Reader and Peoplebrowsr to Seesmic Web.)
- Sean McBride
are you still using Toluu? I'm thinking through maximizing RSS stuff... yahoo pipes, Google reader, and then there's toluu - lazyfeed - feedly. hm... options. any suggestions?
- Courtney Engle
Louis, when you get another invite I want to try out LazyFeed now that I'm settled.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, I just wrote them again, saying: "Feed us. I am lazy. Put the invites in my mouth." And Bwana, what topics did you have? Mine is constantly moving.
- Louis Gray
Thanks Louis - now I can't figure out how to add topics. Any suggestions?
- Jesse Stay
@jessie - there should be an add site button near the top/middle of the page, I added FF, my blog and twitter, started getting stuff related to things I am interested in line the perpetual rumors of an apple mediapad/tablet.
- Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Dan, yes, I've done that, but it says I still need to add topics.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, add your blog and Twitter. At the top it says Enter a Word of Interest. Put anything in there. Google, Twitter, FriendFeed, RSS...
- Louis Gray
Then that spawns stories. Click any topic and get related topics, and you can add those. It's very fluid.
- Louis Gray
awesome Louis, thanks! That one got me in :)
- Tim Hoeck
Wow, thanks, Louis. I added a couple of science and medicine blogs and now have a bunch of really good stuff I hadn't seen before based on the related content. In hog heaven :-)
- Sally Church
Oooh it works really well if your Delicious tags are focused around an area eg science or cancer or tech, very good indeed... this is better than a static RSS reader which relies only on the blogs you import
- Sally Church
I like Lazyfeed a lot at first glance. It certainly demonstrates the power and usefulness of tags and semantic markup.
- Sean McBride
Louis, do you not have any privacy concerns about using Google Reader and gmail? Why not support independent options? Now if only we could get FriendFeed to use tags. I don't understand why any Social Networking site would not use them so they can then display related content. Trying out LazyFeed. Thanks for the invite.
- Internet Strategist
Any more LazyFeed invitations up for grabs, out of curiosity?
- Tyson Key
I do not have any privacy concerns about Google Reader or GMail. Why would I? And what do you see as a better "independent" option to either of those?
- Louis Gray
i would like to see a video tutorial by you to learn how to live in those 4 tabs.
- Jason Pollock
i don't *get* lazyfeed. I have to enter my blogs by hand if I want to have them listed? It can only search a few services? Louis, explain or link me to somewhere you've described how you use it!
- Zach Landes
One point about Lazyfeed: apparently one can't perform any operations on news items (other than reading them). No sharing, emailing, tagging, marking as liked, etc. Right?
- Sean McBride
needs a view all tags and perhaps an ignore tag list.
- Matt Soreco
In case anyone was wondering, the #meganfox promotional code is no longer valid.
- Jeff Brown
All British people are into audio, very great. A few weeks ago I shared these guys' philosophy with Zune people at Microsoft. Of course they couldnt get how essential it is to be open. They are even talking about sharing weird audio, how couldnt Microsoft make it with music even with a "Welcome to social" motto.
- Burcu Dogan
So weird, I was JUST looking at that site, literally 20 seconds ago...
- James Hull
James: they won best design and best entertainment categories.
- Robert Scoble
Yeah, I was looking into a way to incorporate short audio podcasts onto my site from my iPhone. The app I like, FiRe, had SoundCloud integration. SC's player is slick, but not sure if it's too much for my needs. Other option is AudioBoo.
- James Hull
Just watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall......and liked it. Is my dislike of Judd Apatow-related things waning, or was this really a heckuvalot sweeter and more endearing than Knocked Up/Superbad/etc?
Well it was written by Jason Segel so its not a typical Apatow movie. Segal added a lot of great stuff to the movie. Apatow is just this generations Ivan Reitman. He is pooling great talent together to put together funny movies just for this generation. Things will mature more as the generation gets older. So hang in there.
- CW™
I really didn't like this one. I liked Knocked Up and liked Superbad (the second time) but hated Forgetting Sarah Marshall
- Louis Gray
That's interesting, Louis. What did you like about Knocked Up and Superbad and didn't like about Forgetting Sarah Marshall? CW, I noticed that - I think Segal did a great job with the script.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
i think you're the only person i ever come across who didn't think Knocked Up was brilliant... i've not seen it, myself.
- edythe
I haven't seen the others but I liked Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Good to see a romcom from a man's perspective for a change.
- Martin Bryant
from iPhone
Comparatively, it had to be better. It had moments, and more than the others. But overall, it also glorified the worst traits of the man-boy, like all seem to. All his/their films have their moments of insight. But, those moments are all surrounded by crap, imo.
- Michael W. May
edythe, it was not brilliant. It had no likable characters, it celebrated the worst elements of male-ness, and tried to get its laughs in all the wrong ways. Martin, yeah, I liked that too - and I think it did it far better than Knocked Up, which was also trying to be a romcom from a man's perspective. MWM, I don't think it was nearly as bad on the man-boy side as Knocked Up. From the...

We've been rewatching How I Met Your Mother episodes lately, and I was trying to remember which movie it was that Jason Segel was in recently besides I Love You, Man. Will have to add to the "to watch" list.

Too much coincidence for my taste (stays at the same hotel? really?) Russell Brand and the puppet show save it from being a total wash
