In a bicameral, bipartisan landslide, (68-0 and 35-3), Rhode Island lawmakers today overrode Governor Carcieri's veto of legislation to allow the licensed, regulated sale of marijuana to seriously ill patients.
And, the Supreme Court still doesn't care. Unfortunate that our "nation of laws" often still ignores the facts.
- Jason Nunnelley
@Jason - it doesn't much matter what the Supreme Court says if the law is changed. Congress is the problem, not the Judiciary.
- Anthony Citrano
Only the second state? What about the recently passed medical marijuana law in Michigan?
- Scott Ohlemacher
Anthony, I assume you're saying IF the feds rewrite their illegal FDA laws. Gonzales v. Raich was a bad decision, claiming that a state has no right to make an act legal or illegal if the Federal Government decides it MIGHT have an effect on interstate commerce. Clarence Thomas got that one right (sure you've read his dissent). But, a state licensing and regulating the medicine doesn't mean the Feds won't still prosecute selectively to exert their power.
- Jason Nunnelley
I see bumps in this road. The FDA still has legal oversight in marijuana distribution, especially if a state claims it's a regulated medicine. The [potential] of California's approach was that the "drug" is not regulated. It is tolerated, decriminalized. If you grow mushrooms in your back yard because they have vitamins, are you illegally producing medicine? Well, if you call it a regulated medicine, you are.
- Jason Nunnelley
@Scott - more than a dozen states have decriminalized in some way (personal use, medical use, or both.) RI is the second state to put in place formal state-level licensure and regulation. [I edited the title ...]
- Anthony Citrano
@Jason: I respectfully suggest you're getting it backwards. "The feds rewriting FDA laws" - I don't understand you here. The FDA is not the issue; they're actually scientists, not politicians. If the FDA will approve MDMA and psilocybin research, as they did in '01, I find it hard to believe they'll suddenly decide to start obstructing marijuana research. The roadbloack w/r/t research...
- Anthony Citrano
Anthony, the issue is FDA and Congressional enforcement. I don't think I have that backward. It's /NOT/ an approved treatment. It is /KNOWN/ to work. But, it's not approved. Marinol is an approved treatment and is prescribed, though scarcely. The pro-pot crowd argue that the "natural stuff" is the best solution and have their evidence for why: http://norml.org/index... If the Congress would allow for personal use of said substance independent of FDA oversight, problem solved.
- Jason Nunnelley
Anthony (cont) the Feds placed the substance in the realm of regulated drugs by classification, just like they did with LSD, steroids, etc. They could as easily classify it as an unregulated natural plant. That solves all the conflicts instantly. Potheads don't have to pretend they have some new fangled disease to smoke their weed and the DEA doesn't have to invade sickly grandma's home. FDA is highly political. They're not likely to endorse smoking anything, ever.
- Jason Nunnelley
A much bigger question is whether the FDA should tell a state (by jurisdiction) whether a treatment should be allowed in their state. If drug A is considered harmful, but a state thinks it's just fine, should they be allowed to legislate the local use of the drug is allowed? I consider this oversight less than legitimate, thus my term "illegal FDA laws." Clarence Thomas agreed, that a plant grown locally, for local use should not be regulated via interstate commerce.
- Jason Nunnelley
@Jason - and how do you propose the FDA "place" a Schedule I substance into "unregulated natural plant" by "classification"? Under the CSA, the DEA schedules such things, not FDA. And: "Congressional enforcement"? What the heck is that, exactly? (btw, agree with you regarding Congress and personal use; that was my original point re: SCOTUS).
- Anthony Citrano
Anthony, I suggest (actually, should have clearly stated - I meant to say authoritatively) the Congress should classify it as an unregulated substance. They have that power, like with Alcohol. It's been done. Congress is the power grantor and grants it liberally. They shouldn't. We need less rules. Most of us agree that pot just isn't worth the regulation, much like alcohol wasn't worth it. Congress has the authority to delegate authority or remove it. DEA and FDA work at the whim of Congress.
- Jason Nunnelley
@Jason: and is that not what I said in the first place, in response to your SCOTUS finger-pointing?
- Anthony Citrano
Anthony, I may have become circular. But, the court could have simply said "you don't have authority." They chose not to. The Anabolic Steroids Control Act of 1990 is a recent example of how the congressional process creates new illegal substances. I think we agree. Maybe I'm just argumentative :)
- Jason Nunnelley
We are agreeing, it seems to me: change the law. I'm radical enough to want the entire CSA repealed, but that's another topic... Rhode Island today is a (small) step in the right direction. There are a lot of smart people fighting the good fight on this stuff and they deserve kudos. As do the Rhode Island legislators who had the testicular fortitude to do the right thing.

Thinking back on the last 10 years or so I think political and religious distractions (war on terror, etc) have probably held back technological advances by at least 5 years or so.
Meaning, had there not been a 9/11 and our country's fumbling retarded approach to dealing with it, we would be well into the era of SSDs, baby AIs and a nanotech industry in full bloom. Instead, terrorism and our irrelevant war in Iraq screwed the economy, made people afraid and gave us things like FaceBook, Twitter, and FriendFeed. Not saying that those aren't good, but we should have been past this point back in 2005 or so, don't you think?

It does feel like the U.S. of America is in a dark age of industry. I think we've been coasting since the early 80's on the technology/innovation momentum that we had then, slowing down all the time and living off what had been accrued earlier. Now the account is nearly empty. Our culture has devalued designing and making useful things in favor of ... I don't understand what. The panic and wing-nut power-grab since the 9/11 attacks have only exacerbated the downfall.

I truely think that all police, military and anyone with "power" be subjigated to true abuse to understand what it is like before being allowed the ability to have any power over anyone else. Allegations of rape and abuse were included in his 2004 report but the fact there were photographs was never revealed. He has now confirmed their existence in an interview with the Daily Telegraph. I feel bad for Obama, he's caught between a rock and a hard place right now. I think he should release the photos for the simple fact that I think they'll somehow get out anyway and the fact that he isn't releasing them (for good reason) will still come back to bite him.
- James Poling
@James: yep, my initial reaction when he pulled the plug on this was to say "air it out *now*, as close the Bush era as possible." I now see why the Pentagon folks want this kept private, too. But, as we see here, it's out. It's not going away. And, yeah, it's worse than we thought [sigh].
- MikeAmundsen
I don't know. One thing that bothers me about public release of all of these pics (and I do think legal and prosecuting authorities should have access) is that there doesn't seem to be any consideration for the victims. I don't think a rape victim should have photos of his/her rape published/release to the public without his/her consent. It's a further violation. The whole situation is just messed up.
- Katy S
@Katy: i've not seen many Abu Ghraib photos w/ victims easily identified. w/ the exception of the "dog" photo showing the frightened look on a victim's face, all the ones i've seen have the victims face blurred or with black lines across the face. 'sides, this identity issue can be handled easily enough. i would not be against blurring the faces of all parties in these photos. IMO, the point is not _who_ did it, but _what_ was done.
- MikeAmundsen
Katy, I totally agree. I don't think the photos necessarily "need" to be released to the public. I just think they eventually will be leaked anyway and that somehow, someone will say that because he didn't just release them in the first place that Obama was somehow complicit in these crimes against humanity.

"“THE Princess and the Frog” does not open nationwide until December, but the buzz is already breathless: For the first time in Walt Disney animation history, the fairest of them all is black. Princess Tiana, a hand-drawn throwback to classic Disney characters like Cinderella and Snow White, has a dazzling green gown, a classy upsweep hairdo and a diamond tiara. Like her predecessors, she is a strong-willed songbird (courtesy of the Tony-winning actress Anika Noni Rose) who finds her muscle-bound boyfriend against all odds. “Finally, here is something that all little girls, especially young black girls, can embrace,” Cori Murray, an entertainment director at Essence magazine, recently told CNN. To the dismay of Disney executives — along with the African-American bloggers and others who side with the company — the film is also attracting chatter of an uglier nature. Is “The Princess and the Frog,” set in New Orleans in the 1920s, about to vaporize stereotypes or promote them?"

Agree with Lindsay. But this is still nice. I just want to move beyond the whole race thing. I must add that I think Disney got it right enough with The Proud Family cartoon, which, for the most part, is positive and a small step in the right direction. - Akiva Moskovitz
Changed? It's more realtime, which means that it's more useful for immediate communications, but less useful as a showcase for information.

Given todays events, I think FF's new UI/feature set is in a better position to compete. And will only get better.

Zee, you do realize that those who "voted with their feet" won't be here to tell you how much they hated the changes, right? Slightly skewing the results of this poll ;-)
- Sprague D
gotten better for the most part though some concessions have been made imo
- Cee Bee
it's different in a better sort of way - I liked the original just fine though
- mike "glemak" dunn
Improved - I think there's a big win still to be achieved with the look, but real-time and simplifications really do it for me
- Christopher Galtenberg
i wish i could say my experience was better, but it is worse.
- edythe
More powerful but more fragmented when compared to the old days. UI needs improvements though.
- David Young
I no likee the new style. I likee old style mo' bettah. Old style was better for conversations in threads. more easy to follow. my old brain hurts with this new style. and i forget stuff when it goes to page 2. but more people like the new style i guess. bastards. :-) but i still love you all. really, i do.
- Morgan Haley
I miss the icons which indicated what their entries were. And yes, I know there are greasemonkey scripts, for that, but I didn't have to do that last time. And I hate the real-time thingee, too.
- Derrick
I'm not really sure - a few days ago I was frustrated and today I'm fine with things - so guess it just depends on the day.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Despite my respect and love for Morgan, I'm in the MO likee camp. Much mo, in fact. But I'm pretty easy to please. There are one or two things that I miss from the old days (like stats), but real time and the added benefit that this brings to other new features like DMs... have you ever used a DM as an IM platform, awesome!... plus the removal of caps from post length and the email addresses and.... yeah, definitely mo likee!
- Jim Misses SP
its faster so missing an hour you'd have to back track several pages. end users shouldn't have to track repeated post, it would be nice if duplicates were automatically not allowed
- Monique
I suspect you aren't going to hear too much from the people who didn't care for the update for two reasons: 1. The enthusiasts just argue with you, and who needs that and 2. If you *really* didn't like it you're gone -- you ain't using it and didn't hear the question. In any case, after a little time getting used to it, I have adjusted. But during the time of adjustment I got used to...

I've seen the first real growth in a while, but my personal FF experience has been down lately
- RAPatton
Aside from the missing service icons, and sort-by-service, and the hideous design (fixed by forthcoming skinning) it's pretty much perfect. Which makes the lack of service icons and service sorting so damn infuriating. There was NO reason to kill it, and 50 reasons to keep it, and so damn simple to turn back on as a freakin option.
- Matthew DeVries
Its about the same, as with the last few beta/upgrade cycles I found the changes a little jarring and was put off by them at first. But as I actually started using the new features I appreciate the way they add to the over all user experience
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
Improved but could be better with some minor tweaks. I do feel I am missing more things which means I need to make more lists.
- Amani
I miss the old interface. And I miss the level of communication I used to get before RT and the Twitter influx. I guess the verdict for me is worsened.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
What current site most resembles the old friendfeeds mode of operation?
- Chuck Baggett
Gotten much worse for me from the perspective of people looking at stuff I post, but improved the ability to have ad-hoc conversation. Overall I'm in the Nay camp.
- Threepwood
I have mixed feelings. I like some of the changes but now I feel that I miss a good deal of content that I didn't before. I think this is primarily due to the fact that I can't get best of day for my lists anymore and even the current best of day only provides a small fraction of the posts on a daily basis. I also think real-time doesn't allow for the level of discovery that was available before and many items fly by the stream never to return.
- Mark Krynsky
Louis: watch it buddy or I'll leave a rotting banana in your BMW. ;-)
- Robert Scoble
What Akiva said. Also: I love being able to search so specifically, and save searches and all that. However, I get significantly less engagement in certain circles of people that I *think* is directly related to real-time causing stuff to fly by. There's no objective way to measure that, though, it could just be people changing their habits, their subscription numbers, etc. EDIT: And I'm not just talking about less engagement for me. I also see other users have less comments on their stuff.
- Laura Norvig
I wish they'd done something a bit more ballsy with the new ui. Feels unpolished to me. Flickr's level of cleanliness would have been nice to see. Nevertheless, the real-time stuff is cool. I wish the additions to the API were out though...
- Aaron Brethorst
Improved. I'm spending much more time here now.
- Murray Barton
I think that it's improved although disappointed that there is now no Best of Day on the iPhone application
- Joe Dawson
Mixed, leaning toward worse. Real-time updates rule, but the new UI looks like Fisher-Price's My First Portal Page. Missing favicons identifying sources of updates, among other things
- l.m.orchard
I'm not sure the current color-scheme and layout are the best they've ever had, but the product itself has definitely improved. The original FriendFeed was more like a super-soaker squirt gun. You pump it up and a little stream of water shoots out for a bit. Now, it's actually a firehose. Always on. You could potentially see all of your stream if you just stared at it all day.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I did not like it at first. I preferred the old format better - For some reason since the update I have been receiving new subscribers daily. Do you think that is because more people have joined since the update?
- Laurie DesAutels
