With time running out — and as Mr. McCain discarded two safer choices, Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, as too predictable — he turned to Ms. Palin. He had his first face-to-face interview with her on Thursday and offered her the job moments later. Advisers to Mr. Pawlenty and another of the finalists on Mr. McCain’s list described an intensive vetting process for those candidates that lasted one to two months. “They didn’t seriously consider her until four or five days from the time she was picked, before she was asked, maybe the Thursday or Friday before,” said a Republican close to the campaign. “This was really kind of rushed at the end, because John didn’t get what he wanted. He wanted to do Joe or Ridge.” - Scott Jarkoff

Japan makes the most advanced, remarkable toilets in the world. Japanese toilets can, variously, check your blood pressure, play you music, wash and dry your anus and 'front parts' by means of an in-toilet nozzle that sprays water and warm air, suck smelly ions from the atmosphere, switch on a light for you as you stumble into the bathroom at night, put the seat lid down for you (a function known as the 'marriage-saver') and flush away your excreta without requiring anything as old-fashioned as a tank. These devices are known as high-function toilets, but even the lowliest high-function toilet will have as standard an in-built bidet system, a heated seat and some form of nifty control panel. - Scott Jarkoff

At Google, we have a saying: “launch early and iterate.” While this approach is usually limited to our engineers, it apparently applies to our mailroom as well! As you may have read in the blogosphere, we hit "send" a bit early on a comic book introducing our new open source browser, Google Chrome. As we believe in access to information for everyone, we've now made the comic publicly available -- you can find it here. We will be launching the beta version of Google Chrome tomorrow in more than 100 countries. - Scott Jarkoff

Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, whose popularity plummeted after his government introduced a much-criticized medical plan for the elderly, has announced his resignation, according to media reports. The 72-year-old prime minister said he made his decision last week, and was stepping to down because of the difficulties he has had in carrying out policies, Kyodo said. "It is necessary to try to implement measures under a new framework," Fukuda said, according to the news agency. "I thought now is the best time (to resign) to avoid a political vacuum." - Scott Jarkoff

Hey Mona :-) any chance you're coming to TC52? - Orli Yakuel
i use the old version. I like its smooth and cute style :) the new version has more stuff but is still in need of being polished, and i dont like the color scheme! - Hayk Hakobyan
oh, they have a new verson? ah yeah, it does say beta up there. didn't notice. - Shoshannah
it's 5two now? - Zee at WeDoCreative
New 80% of the time. I miss a couple of things from the old version, though. - Robert Scoble

@Mona, it's 52 now.. (mm.. I think) - Orli Yakuel
Googled it... still doesn't compute ;) Facebook message me! And the new one is too spread out(?) for me. Instead of having everything consolidated on the left hand side, I know have to click around from L -> R -> L -> R. :\ - Mona N.

using old one -- what turned me off BETA -- using bold for nicknames makes me sick, and design with default width for about 1024 pixel makes it not so useful on smaller device (yes, SOME small device(s) is/are with full-fledged browser, only size of screen not that big) - silpol
still using an 'old' friendfeed, fully customized with greasemonkey scripts. - Marcel van der Laan
Beta with a style layout. http://userstyles.org/styles/1... - Russellreno

Yesterday, with the news of Sarah Louise Heath Palin inexplicably being chosen as a Vice-Presidential nominee, the attentive American public was also introduced to her character. Unfortunately for all of us, it was filled with multiple instances of backtracking and outright lies. While Alaskans had been giving her an 80% approval rating, recently 87% of Alaskans polled on the subject of TrooperGate believed she was lying. Now, I've known liars in my life. Their single core problem is not with themselves, but those around them. If they're never called out on their twisting of truths and fabrications, they simply continue to make larger lies. Well, Sarah, I'm calling you a liar. And not even a good one. Trig Paxson Van Palin is not your son. He is your grandson. The sooner you come forward with this revelation to the public, the better. - Scott Jarkoff

Allied Telesis will add eight channels to its premium cable television lineup at Yokota, an AAFES official in Dallas said in an e-mail to Stars and Stripes. The long-awaited new selections are Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, BET, MTV, VH1, CMT, TV Land and Spike. They’re expected to hit the airwaves by Monday. That raises the total in Allied’s premium TV package to 71 channels, at a cost of 70 cents each, according to Larry Marshall, a strategic communications planner for Resilian Communications, the brand name for Army and Air Force Exchange Service telecommunications products. - Scott Jarkoff

The only issue with re-installing Windows is that you have to be careful about the reactivation process. By default, if you use the OEM CD that came with your computer when you first bought it, re-installing Windows should be a breeze and you won’t have to reactivate. However, this may not always be the case. If you don’t use the original CD that came with the computer, you may have to re-activate. Also, sometimes even when you use the same CD, it may not force you to re-activate XP. You can avoid having to reactivate XP by simply copying a file from your Windows directory and saving it on a USB stick, floppy drive, or CD. When you first activated Windows, XP creates a file called “WPA.DBL” and stores it in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory. - Scott Jarkoff

Six sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington received nonjudicial punishments for a shipboard fire in May that caused $70 million in damage and injured 37 crewmembers, the Pacific Fleet command said Thursday. The Pacific Fleet refused to release the names and ranks of the sailors disciplined, citing privacy concerns. Filostrat said details of the punishments are an "internal matter" of the George Washington and would not be released. - Scott Jarkoff

When Windows Vista was first introduced, it came with a powerful defense against pirating. In fact, it was so powerful that paying customers complained when it malfunctioned, and Microsoft wound up making some big changes. Unless Vista was properly activated, it would drop into "reduced functionality mode", in which the only thing you could do with it was access the Internet in order to complete online activation -- or buy a valid product key. In Service Pack 1, the behavior was changed so that the operating system would still operate, but the background turned black and nagging boxes warned you that you "might be a victim of software piracy". Now, Microsoft is going to bring this "feature" to Windows XP Professional with a new version of the Windows Genuine Advantage. - Scott Jarkoff

Kirin Breweries on Tuesday unveiled a new type of beer with 7 percent alcohol content -- higher than most beers -- in a bid to gain a bigger share of the market. The company announced that it will begin selling its "Strong Seven" third-category beer on Oct. 22. Over the past few years demand has been increasing for light-tasting beer with low alcohol content, but Kirin decided to develop a new genre targeting male beer drinkers aged from their 30s to 50s. - Scott Jarkoff

The workplace, more and more, is changing, and with this change comes a whole new set of rules. The traditional office work environment and tools are still around, but at a very rapid pace, they’re being supplanted by newer and better tools, newer and better ways of working. The old rules are being broken, and new ones are emerging. You could call this the Workplace of the Future, as not all businesses have adopted these models, and it will be a few years before these new rules are the norm. But for many people (myself included), this is the Workplace of Today — there’s no need to wait for new technologies or tools, because they’re already here. - Scott Jarkoff

Americans eat Indian food with a knife and fork, which is about as wrong as it gets :) - Deepak
Oh, yeah? Well the French eat hamburgers with silverware too. We all eat how we feel comfortable. -ps exception can be taken with Bengali food, picking all those fish bones out with silverware is just impractical. Most real Indian food is designed to be eaten well mixed with rice or roti, What you get in a restaurant in the US is minus the spice and plus the food coloring, more American than anything else. Then again Some people (go ahead and gasp @Deepak) don't really like rice that much. - Gina K

But how do you dip the nigiri in the soy sauce, Alex? :P - Mona N.

LOL! Next question: How much soy sauce do you pour in your 'kozara'? - Mona N.
Depends on how spicy i want it to be...I put a chunk of wasabe in first, then pour in a small amount and mix in the wasabe (easier to mix in the wasabe with a little soy without the wasabe going into little clump balls) and then slowly mix in more soy until it's the right color of greenish brown. Obviously the spicier you want it the more green it will be. But putting the wasabe into the soy sauce might be more of an american thing. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
Well, yeah -- eating it with chopsticks always felt weird to me. - Stellina
