Re: Blank Canvas: Where Do You Freelance? - http://www.gomediazine.com/design-...
"Funny. I've got the opposite problem. There are too many distractions at home (TV shows to watch! Chores to do! Stuff in the refrigerator!). I find I'm much more productive in a coffee shop -- there's an independent place in Indianapolis that I really like, and the coffee's great -- in two-hour bursts. It may sound strange, but by the time I get a cup of coffee, haul out my laptop, power cord, mouse, sketchpad, etc., it's too much trouble to get up and even got to the restroom, because I don't want to pack up all that stuff. I stay planted in that chair and get stuff *done*. It's a system, and it works for me." - Jason Baldwin

I like this -- you have to have health insurance. No more free rides.
If I pay my own way, what free ride is that? - Keith Rowland
that's fine, Keith, but most people who don't have health insurance just stick it to the hospital by saying, "sorry, I can't pay." - Laura Norvig
Then hospitals shouldn't serve them. It's not a right. - Keith Rowland
Hospital emergency rooms are required by law to see all patients that present themselves to the emergency room, regardless of their ability to pay. - Laura Norvig
Then what are you supposed to do when you have an emergency, not go to the hospital?? - Nick Rowland
I'm saying the law is wrong. In all of human history, why only now are we ENTITLED to health care for FREE? Because Unions bargained for it. - Keith Rowland
You're right, Keith. Let them die if they can't pay. - Leo Laporte
Are you serious Leo? - Jason Hansen
</sarcasm> - Leo Laporte
IMO, The cost burden should be borne by the patient or the patients family, estate or their insurance, not by the people. - Keith Rowland
I'm as pissed off at my fellow humans as a person can be, but I still don't think anybody should die or suffer because they don't earn enough to afford healthcare. I think that to be a responsible citizen, I have to look out for my fellow man, and expect nothing in return, but hope he'd do the same for me. - Jason Baldwin
@Keith - Because it's better for society as a whole to guarantee health care for all citizens. Eg it's cheaper to provide free vaccinations than to deal with the economic fall-out of a plague; it's cheaper to provide free surgery when cancer is in the early stages than to provide for the deceased's children; and so forth. The economy is stronger when people are cured and able to work than when they're unable to work because they can't afford a cure (and can't afford a cure because they're unable to work). - Deborah Fitchett
Leo: Thank you! :) - Jason Hansen
Go for it, Jason. I'd like to decide who I help also. Good point Deborah, I'd like to see the numbers on that? - Keith Rowland
You've missed my point entirely. *Everyone* who needs help should get help. Yes, there are always going to be people abusing the system as long as there's a system, but to deny *anyone* medical care because of an inability to pay is fundamentally wrong. - Jason Baldwin
Keith, this will scratch the surface http://www.entrepreneur.com/tradejo... Bear in mind it only addresses dollars lost from those who are out of work sick, it doesn't come anywhere near dollars lost from those who are too ill to work. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Agreed Jason, but it would be smart to design a system that doesn't bankrupt the hospitals in the process I think. ;) - Eoghann Irving
OK, that's only one side of the equation. What's the cost of preventing all those illnesses? - Keith Rowland
"human history, why only now are we ENTITLED to health care for FREE?" That's a pretty broad brush stroke unless you limit human history to the USA and South Africa. Also, no system operates on the basis of free—changing availability, options and method of funding/pooling of resources: yes. - Micah Wittman
Keith, that depends completely on the illness in question. You also have to take into consideration the culture of where people work and whether that helps/hinders recuperation. For instance, I've worked jobs where I had to have a doctor's note to be able to take a sick day, a note that would cost me about 4 hours of post-tax pay via co-pay. In those instances I didn't go to the doctor... more... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I think if someone has a bone sticking out of their thigh from a car wreck, but no insurance, the ER should send them outside to bleed to death on the sidewalk. - Christopher A Carr from Android
Lets see I pay a bit more for gas, booze, taxes and I can walk into any doctors office or hospital without question. My father had a bypass heart surgery within 2 weeks of discovery of trouble. My diabetes care is made up of multiple doctors and health care providers and I never have to even be concerned with paymenty but rather concentrate on my health. I could never imagine my health... more... - DougUnderwood
@Deborah, @Tina, you nailed it! - Valley
How about this Keith. You say you have money to pay me to save your life after you are in a horrible car accident. I, as your just nominated doctor, decide it'll cost YOU 1 million dollars to stop your bleeding and stabilize you. I mean now while you're bleeding out is the perfect time to haggle over the price of your health care right? - Berial

General Hospital is one of my favorite soaps. - Fleagle
DougUnderwood: You lie! ;-) - Christopher A Carr
EMTALA has been in place since 1986. The EMS Systems Act was enacted in 1973. We've already decided that everyone is entitled to access to emergency care regardless of their ability to pay. I think it's pointless to argue this at this stage. - Victor Ganata

I cannot imagine a country where people's attitude is, no money and you're sick and suffering - well that's your problem not ours. Everyone loses when people spread that illness because they cannot get treatment, or off work due to illness. I don’t mean to idealize the past, but why aren’t people ashamed of being uneducated or flat-out stupid anymore? The Insult Was Extra Large - http://www.nytimes.com/2009...
this is a really good public editor's column on that offensive review of j.c. penney that the times ran last month. lots of handwringing about how the times is perceived as elitist and then this revealing discussion of audience from the writer herself... - Zach Seward
Poor Cintra. It was a funny column. People are so quick to take offense. The Times's furious backpedaling is offensive to me. - Leo Laporte
i was offended, and i don't think i've ever been to j.c. penney. - Zach Seward
What part offended you? It strikes me her description of JC Penney was right on. And I have been there. Many times. - Leo Laporte
i am afraid that if JC PEnny takes offense then they have not been inside their own store in quite sometime, perhaps the writing style was a tad on the blunt side, but that is what the store is like. - Nathan Eckenrode
well, i'm OK with biting cultural criticism, but she starts with a false assumption: that the only people who shop for clothes in manhattan are rich and thin. she's assaulting j.c. penney for not conforming to her one way of thinking about new york fashion. it doesn't work to criticize something for being homey with generalizations like "middle america" and pretentious phrases like... more... - Zach Seward
Unfunny lame column. This is a great example of why I don't get what is so great about the NYTimes. This is the kind of writing that makes it into what is alleged to be the best paper in the country? If this is the best newspapers can do then let them die - jccalhoun
I'm glad she wrote it the way she did, because it informs me that I don't need to read anything else she writes. I'm glad The Times ran it, because it informs me that their editorial process isn't perfect, so I don't need to put as much stock in what they publish. I don't know why Leo's reaction surprises me. - Jason Baldwin
Even her "...our very shallow and ridiculous society.” apology comes across as condescending. Speak for yourself, Cintra. As a member of society, I think you're the shallow and ridiculous one. - Garmon Estes
Hey watch out what you say about JC Pennies! My mom worked there 20 some years. With that said Pennies HAS CHANGED since she left.Different kind of customers and way different kind of advertising. Its NOT Walmarts to say the least! - gerald miller
this is overwrought but might be of interest: http://www.nytpick.com/2009... - Zach Seward
The problem is not that she insulted Penny's (she didn't really), but that she insulted a majority of Americans. (Most Americans are overweight and self conscious about it, and don't need a snippy little b**** mocking them. See I can be edgy too.) Is the blowback overkill? Probably. Is it completely unjustified? No. - Chester Mealer Jr.

"I agree. I don't call myself anything anymore. When you're a graphic designer AND illustrator AND art director AND type designer AND photographer AND web designer AND programmer AND et cetera, it's too constrictive to land on one.
