Tesla Motors hits the brakes amid credit crisis - Los Angeles Times

"The credit crisis has hit the country's leading electric car maker. Citing "extraordinary times," Tesla Motors, maker of the battery-powered, $109,000 Roadster, said Wednesday that difficult market conditions were forcing it to delay production of its next-generation vehicle, close two offices, lay off an unspecified number of employees and replace its chief executive." - RAPatton via Bookmarklet

Six New Star Trek Photos Revealed

From /Film: "Paramount has begun to distribute the first production photos from JJ Abrams‘ Star Trek around the web. Above is a first look at the crew on the Bridge of the USS Enterprise from MTV. Lindelof says that Kirk’s Black shirt is the Captain uniform, and that the red shirt crew member in the background is of no importance (ie Uhura probably replaces her after she dies early on). The bridge looks extremely cool, I can;t wait to see more of it. UGO has the first cast photo of the Enterprise crew (From left to right: Anton Yelchin as Chekov, Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, Simon Pegg as Lt. Montgomery Scott, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, John Cho as Sulu and Zoe Saldana as Uhura)." - Mark Trapp via Bookmarklet

I'll be at the Singularity Summit, so I'll see :) - Eric Rice
special interests will control AI until it's soe chaep and prevalent that anyone can employ it. by then it will be of magrinal effect - MikeAmundsen
Thank you very much for that link Jason! - Marcos Marado via fftogo
Not even AI understands economics. - (teh)Kenny
The AI would sell its stock, then create a crisis, then buy up cheap stock, then calm everyone down. Repeat and rinse. - Amit Patel
If it was responsible for ensuring the compliance of regulations and transparency, sure. And for going on killing rampages on the executives who have had the awful taste of throwing expensive events *after* being saved by the government... (e.g. AIG and Fortis) - Pedro Pinheiro
Eric: What an incredibly provocative question. I think you need to separate "regulation" and "special interests" because the correct and democratic purpose of regulation is specifically about preventing special interests from jeopardizing a system - whether it's health, finance or food. Here in Canada, we just had a major meat contamination that resulted in many deaths. The private meat company was "self regulating." Private interests have to be answerable to the public if they serve the public. - melmcb
Special interests are tradionally framed by republicans as social groups and political causes who get in the way of "business." The "special interests" we need be most worried about are those who actually hold power. Like the thousands of high paid corporate lobbyists who fight *against* the checks and balances that protect the public good, safety and quality standards. - melmcb
How smart? Are they idiot savants who follow a narrowly-defined set of criteria? There's a famous story about neural networks where the programmers thought they were teaching a system how to recognize tanks and it was just being trained to prefer certain combinations of light and dark. Can they self-modify? - Steven Kaye
@Mel: There are also rent-seeking and regulatory capture, though, in which special interests define regulation. - Steven Kaye
I thought quants and Financial mess was skynet..was I wrong? - Fred Grott
AI would (by definition) be regulated by its own interests. So you could postulate that our entire economy is being manipulated by an Excel VBA macro that "woke up" and decided to crush the puny humans. - Chuck LeDuc Díaz
Of course that if you're talking about AI as what you see in Iain Banks "The Culture", then the answer is just not having stocks nor money. - Marcos Marado via fftogo
In my current project, sentient AI is normal and if you evolve the virus protection industry, you include things like rampancy protection, to prevent AI from going about the robotic 3 law violations... the treatment for news data being purely synthetic and robotic to avoid bias. I suppose this could apply to finances as well... anyway, tangent, but wanted to throw out the bad sentience issue. - Eric Rice
I think it all depends on the rules within which the AI had to live within and of course if it was allowed to modify it's own programming or not. But in reality, all an expert system or AI would have been able to do would have been to clamp down on money withdrawals from the banks and the sales of stock as the markets went down too fast. Unless you also had a Fed AI that had the ability and power to do everything that Bernanke and Paulson are doing right now. It would be interesting though to see what... - Alex Scoble CISSP
the economy would be like if there were a bunch of AI and expert systems regulating everything. - Alex Scoble CISSP
Marcos++. Seriously, if we're honestly contemplating strong AI then I think we need to consider expanding our definition of "economy" far beyond the myopic confines of the stock market. We currently have many externalities off the balance sheet that have a real direct impact on the sustainability and quality of life and the continued ability to trade goods and services. - Jason Wehmhoener
Jason +1 - Clay Newton
That's the whole point, though. This was a mathematical catastrophe, an actual singularity, a divide-by-zero moment. None of the economic models predicted that anything like this could happen. Oh, less rigorous thinkers could see it coming from a mile away, but that's not the type of thinking that can easily be assigned a Gödel number. - Victor Ganata
I dunno about mathematical catastrophe unless 'i don't have the money to pay for that' = bad math on buyers' parts, lol - Eric Rice
What are the AI's predispositions? - Brandon
Many finacial problems come from Gov. social engineering; like mandating everyone should own a home. Now, if congress was an AI... - Robert Hafer
would smart AI see a point in it all? I think smart AI would go off and start playing GTA or something ;) - alphaxion
Victor: this was not only easy to predict, but actually it was known it was going to happen. We just didn't know when, but that's just because no one really invested the power cycles needed to do so. - Marcos Marado via fftogo
Thinking about it; if you have a Congress AI you'll also want a strong human President to veto "The Destroy All Humans Act of 2012". That'll be no time to be bi-partisan. Or be bullied by being called a humanist bigot. - Robert Hafer
BTW for those who think this crisis was caused by people spending beyond their means...it wasn't. http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2... - Alex Scoble CISSP
They don't hold ALL the blame, but certainly it can't be overlooked that credit industry loves this stuff. They hate when you pay your bills and they hate even more when you pay it OFF. Your debt makes other people rich. Keeping up with the Joneses, Veblen Effects, the whole nine. Ad infinitum. - Eric Rice
Well, no, that's not what screwed us. What screwed us is a bunch of guys thought it would be a good idea to bundle up those bad mortgages into securities and get people to invest in them, with the promise that they'd make a ton of money. At least, all their models showed that they'd make a ton of money. Obviously, this was not the case. - Victor Ganata

When the two colleges are in session, Ithaca's population balloons from about 30,000 to about 80,000, causing big-city congestion on the city's roads. Santa Cruz, California, recently hired a contractor to design a small solar-powered podcar system that would loop through the city's downtown and along its beach front. The Institute for Sustainable Transportation predicts a podcar system will be installed in an American city within the next five years, although it is likely to cost tens of millions of dollars. That, if ever asked to design anything for a film client, they will happily play with sprockets, film reels and/or directors chairs as iconography. That (whilst they would never be caught dead wearing the colours themselves) they will merrily recommend phenomenally bright pinks, oranges and greens to clients on a weekly basis. "Ontologies are enabling technology for the Semantic Web.  They are a means for people to state what they mean by the terms used in data that they might generate, share, or consume.  Folksonomies are an emergent phenomenon of the Social Web. They arise from data about how people associate terms with content that they generate, share, or consume.  Recently the two ideas have been put into opposition, as if they were right and left poles of a political spectrum.  This is a false dichotomy; they are more like apples and oranges. In fact, as the Semantic Web matures and the Social Web grows, there is increasing value in applying Semantic Web technologies to the data of the Social Web. This article is an attempt to clarify the distinct roles for ontologies and folksonomies, and previews some new work that applies the two ideas together - an ontology of folksonomy." - Jason Wehmhoener via Bookmarklet

Novelty theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Monday at 11:44 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Novelty theory attempts to calculate the ebb and flow of novelty in the universe as an inherent quality of time. It is an idea conceived of and discussed at length by Terence McKenna from the early 1970s until his death in the year 2000. Novelty theory involves ontology, morphogenesis, and eschatology. Novelty, in this context, can be thought of as newness, density of complexification, and dynamic change as opposed to static habituation. According to McKenna, when "novelty" is graphed over time, a fractal waveform known as timewave zero or simply the timewave results." - Cee Bee the friendfeeder via Bookmarklet
The graph shows at what times, but never at what locations, novelty is increasing or decreasing. According to the timewave graph, great periods of novelty occurred about 4 billion years ago when Earth was formed, 65 million years ago when dinosaurs were extinct and mammals expanded, about 10,000 years ago after the end of the ice age, around late 18th century when social and scientific revolutions progressed, during the sixties, around the time of 9/11, and with coming novelty periods in November 2008, October 2010, with the novelty progressing towards the infinity on 21st December 2012 - Cee Bee the friendfeeder
An interesting perspective http://dataisnature.com/?p=469 - Jason Wehmhoener
yes, jason, i was reading that earlier and felt like posting about novelty theory, as i've read a bunch of terence mckenna including timewave zero - Cee Bee the friendfeeder
It's an interesting concept, too bad it's not really testable. - Jason Wehmhoener
well it does take into account major "novelties" and/or happenings and events throughout the history of the world and graphs them, whereby a pattern begins to emerge. it just so happens that the point at which ultimate "novelty" occurs coincides with the end date of the mayan calendar (dec. 2012). check it out - Cee Bee the friendfeeder
Maybe the ultimate novelty is a brand-new Mayan calendar? - Kelly Fox
The trouble has to do with semantics. "Novelty" can't really be defined in an objective way, which leaves the whole thing open to cherry picking supportive data and discarding discouraging data in a purely subjective way. As someone who deals with data visualization for a living it bugs me when quant and qual get mixed up in a single data series on a chart. Keep in mind that when I first read True Hallucinations shortly after it came out in '94 I was totally enthralled by the story and the theory... - Jason Wehmhoener
...but long association with McKenna-heads since kinda took the wind out my sails for that idea after a while. Too many people just want this idea to be true and aren't willing to look at it critically. Terrence was an amazing storyteller though, gotta give him credit for that. - Jason Wehmhoener
I did find the dataisnature blog post's association with timewave theory, computer herding, and mathematical limits to be interesting though. The association points towards the possibility that sometimes feedback loops can create limit conditions. It's just really hard to imagine "infinite novelty". Mark, it's one of those emergencies that is the kind that I need to take care of today but don't need to leave the office for... I could shoot off a 5 minute message and maybe have a couple of quick followups without
