I know exactly how you feel. What's a person to do? I am mad at Twitter for suspending some of my accounts. First, the accounts kept causing the password to reset, then they were suspended, all around the time of the DOS attacks. All I ever used Twitter for was to advertise my businesses, and for fun. Instructions on the camera instruct the finder to take photos of anything they like and mail the camera back for a cash reward. The old timers were actually pretty cool. One guy was super drunk. He kept wanting to do fist smashes with me about every 60 seconds or so in our conversation. The not so drunk guy and I had about a half hour conversation about neon signs. He started a novella years ago called "Neon in the Wilderness." He let me take his portrait. The drunk guy said no.

I got alot of amazing neon today. There are pockets of North Chicago that are as close to 1950 as I've ever seen. Wonderful and amazing storefronts, motels, liquor stores. A lot of it's in the process of being torn down. Car dealerships closed down, empty motels. One motel sign that I got was just all by itself on a vacant lot, its motel had been bulldozed over but they left the sign. I could spend 2 months shooting this stuff in Chicago. An amazing place sort of lost in time.

You can't really compare Facebook to Twitter or Ning can you. Facebook has been around for longer. Twitter is only just starting to hit the mainstream. LOTS of growth for twitter to come in 09 I reckon. Friendfeed too.

Twitter and Ning are both up almost 700% this year and FB is "only" up 70% -- why do you say FB grew faster? (obviously they can't grow that fast anymore though because they are so big already)

jjprojects why not compare them? It's fun. Anyway, Twitter, even if it grew four times, which would be totally amazing growth, would still be smaller than Facebook and that's assuming Facebook won't grow at all over next year.

I second Paul's question... year-over-year Ning and FriendFeed had much higher relative growth. Of course, that's easier to do the smaller you are, but it's still worth noting.

Just saying it would be interesting to look at the % growth at the same stage of development of each service rather than the overall size. 4000% growth is impressive for Friendfeed for sure. It will be interesting to see just how much Twitter grows in 09 - If the @britneyspears' of the world continue to jump in.

Having said that, it's also interesting to look at the overall numbers. For instance YouTube just walks all over any other video service. Massively.

If Facebook the social network ever goes down, I'm pretty sure that the ad system they have could quickly be turned into serious competition for Google AdSense/AdWords. Even if actual profit isn't there, the potential sure is, and it grows with each new user and each new advertisement. Facebook will do just fine.

I think Facebook has done a fantastic job. They iterate fast and adapt very well. The quickly realized that the app platform didn't work well and quickly moved from a app-centric to a content-centric strategy. Also thanks to the focus on some core features such as status updates, photos and posted items engagement has gone up lately. The identify and address book information they have is worth billions. I have been very impressed with them.

I agree with Bindu. Facebook makes mistakes... a lot of mistakes... but they learn quickly from them. I've definitely found myself using it more (again) after the latest redesign.

Purchasing Facebook would probably decrease its value. I think it's in some kind of corporate wonderland, where buying it or refusing to fund it each is a bad decision. Their data collection is probably worth billions by this point, however, especially to anyone wanting to compete with Google.

Seems like most people agree. Fundamentally the difference that FB is made for the mainstream where as FF is not, but might go mainstream is a difference so big that it doesn't really matter to compare growth between them

Hmm. As a widget (easy), or each post in friendfeed automatically becomes a blog post? What about there being two different comment systems? Would comments be duplicated to wordpress, or separately hosted and managed at friend feed? Sounds like an interesting conversation though. (edited)

actually the lack of javascript is one of the great things about wordpress.com no autoplaying music, no myspace style layouts, no blogspot gettos
