I left Twitter for Jaiku. Then Jaiku left me for Google. I moved in with Pownce but it died. I went back to Twitter, but flirted with Plurk, Identica, and Rejaw, and even tried doing it myself with Laconica but it was Twitter I really loved. Twitter finally broke my heart so I left it for Friendfeed. Now Friendfeed is leaving me for Facebook. No...
It's like the internet version of Days of Our Lives - Jonathan Hardesty
HAHAHAHAHA.... - David from IM
Haha. ROFL - Roberto Bonini
is friendfeed going anywhere or will it just get better? - Craig Shipp
I'm with you Leo. - Oracio
It reads better than Soap - my roadmap is very similar but I'll forgive FF and live happily ever after with it (for the time being, anyway) - Nicholas Paul Gordon from iPhone
You're the best Leo. Canadians are the funniest people. - Dan Lessard
I'm betting they'll slowly digest it into the Facebook news feed. They claim that Friendfeed is staying put for now, but that won't last. - Ken Bauer
And we keep following Leo all over the place! - Robert Scoble
When will we all get in a long term relationship and stop getting our hearts broken? - Nate Pilling
so what is more important, the medium or the people, hope that FF will let us export our content, and our social netork :) (in my wild dreams) - abdellah
Need ice cream? I'm new to FF, and kind of sad I didn't jump on the proverbial wagon sooner! - Elizabeth K. Barone
I hope you leave your standard breadcrumbs so we can find you in the next chapter of social interaction. - JCunwired
Feels to me like maybe it's time to go back to building a distributed network, rather than hopping from service to service. - Ken Sheppardson
But where to next? That's the question. Wave sounds great, but the implementation will be a PAIN. So where? Oh LeoMoses...where is our path in the desert? - ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
Sounds like a hurtin' country song in the making. - Bill Rodman
Well you can't say that what is happening in the 'social sphere' is boring by any means! - Matt Cassem
I think Leo's audience is more likely to click "Like" or "comment" than Scoble's is. When Leo and Rob are both posting on FF, Leo gets more likes and comments - Mark
Didn't you leave a post earlier saying how funny it was that people complain anytime there's a change (referring to the FF buyout)? This sounds like a complaint to me. - Fleagle
Not complaining - just thinking about the future. I think a little Friendfeed DNA will vastly improve Facebook. And I think Facebook is already the big winner with the general populace. I also think we geeks need a corner somewhere else to hang out in. - Leo Laporte
And I have no plans to leave Friendfeed. Yet. - Leo Laporte
Yet being the operative word..... - Roberto Bonini
sounds like a country song to me - gavin
As for this geeky alternative, http://a.tinythread.com/ just showed up in my feed this morning. Thoughts? - Craig B.
I feel more of a personal connection with the FriendFeed team than I have with other services I've left, and that will be a big part of why I will stay as long as possible. - Louis Gray
^^^ replace "team" with "community" and there's my reason for sticking it out. - JCunwired
Its also going to take a very long time to go through content and bookmark/store it elsewhere. Evernote is going to be used heavily in the weeks to come. - JCunwired
The only way to have control is to use your own URL - Craig Shipp
Wait till you meet Facebook's randy cousin Overly Friendly Book =) - Cynthia Yildirim
what Louis gray said. I'm going to hang around until the lights go out. - Jordan Brock from BuddyFeed
What they said, I don't see any reason to leave FriendFeed unless something actually changes that makes the service worthless to me. - Craig B.
And many times you cheated Twitter, she was always loyal to you. Thats mean someting! - Jacque from m.ctor.org
yup me too Louis and I don't know any of them - Thomas Power
Plurk's not worth leaving anyone for. - Rachel R.
Leo, I think you need to change your FaceFeed status to "It's Complicated" ;) - Daynah
Play this thread off, keyboard cat. - Fleagle
You have to go back to your blog. It still loves you Leo. - Dave Winer
Screw you, Friendfeed! - Andrew Leahey
Users today are investors too - only the 'exit' for us is not lucrative.... its the other way sometimes :) - Mrinal Desai
I just had the idea: wow, how good will Faceboook become though this input? (JUST imagine tagging ppl in FB the way U can Tag them in FF.) - oliver gassner
Love Stinks. - shelter watch
Leo Laporte listed his relationship as: "its complicated." - Randy Shapiro
Damn thats complicated - drmacintosh
Don't worry Leo, its not you, its them... - Steven McGurn
I agree with Jonathan Hardesty "It's like the internet version of Days of Our Lives" - And sites keep getting killed off only to come back to life a month later! - Amy Flynn
very true, however on the other hand, we are getting closer to that one service which everyone will be on... and I dont think twitter is going to be that one - Bryce Campbell
Facebook buying FriendFeed is like having to MOVE just when you got your house all dressed up and made into a comfy HOME! I don't feel like doing it again! - Arleen Boyd
Now that Facebook and Friendfeed have married, I'm waiting for Twitfacefeedplebospacening. - Anthony Marco
Leo, u by your self made two companies (services) out of 3 famous and made Google interested enough to buy 2 of them (Jaiku & FF). Google also tried to flirt with Twitter as well. So which one u choose now? Cause we will follow u :P - Sam Ehsan
Sounds like some of my past love affairs. Of course, I'm married now. That, um, was prior. - Paul Chaney
lmfao, its so true leo, so true! - Derek Bender
Feeling a bit worn around the edges? ... me too! - Susan Beebe from iPhone
Speaking of Days Of Our Lives: Didn't that show jump the shark when the serial killer was unmasked as Marlena (a character I used to have a mad crush on, and who's now mostly a professional victim)? Then all the "killed" characters came back to life, since they were only what I call "soap opera dead"... - Dennis Jernberg
And if everyone follows you, then your all having affairs all over the place! LOL - Technogran
I think it's back to the TWiT Army! - Paul Salzman

Not to mention Pownce was shutdown as soon as it got good! - Kenneth Reitz
No mention of Microsoft Vine? - Robert MacEwan
I've decided I'm not going to tell ANYONE which site I'm favoring... not even myself! I swear! As soon as I decided that FF was my new place (a couple months ago) THIS happens! It's like magic, but in a bad bad way... - Mark J
Why do we all assume this is a bad thing? Maybe the FF Facebook combo will be better?? - Craig Shipp
Maybe they'll keep both open -- FF is the open side, and FB is the closed side. - John Flinchbaugh from IM
Social Networks are sluts? - TheDiva Rockin
It sure is. - Jason Hill
I know exactly how you feel. What's a person to do? I am mad at Twitter for suspending some of my accounts. First, the accounts kept causing the password to reset, then they were suspended, all around the time of the DOS attacks. All I ever used Twitter for was to advertise my businesses, and for fun. Now I don't know where to go. - DogPatch
Here's some thoughts on what's going to happen:http://kennethreitz.com/blog... - Kenneth Reitz

Gotta find one who is a lady in public and a whore in the bedroom. One who looks like a woman, but thinks like a man. One who tells you you're the only person in their world and worships the ground you walk on. One who's from Venus but want's to live on Mars. One who you know will always be there even when the chips are down. One who looks like a movie star, but doesn't bust the credit... more... - Jan Simmonds
I think a lot of people LOVE to think negatively and don't want to think positively. They think FB is BAD and will ruin FF, but I think if they do it well, FB won't be the bad guy. I think most people who are irked about this are irked because they think the FFers "sold out" to the "man". - Mol, FF Music Lover
@Mollyanna - I disagree. I am irked because the future of FF is completely uncertain. It's more likely that FB will let FF flounder and close it down than it is that FB will invest time and resources in maintaining and enhancing FF. FB has other interests and is splitting up the FF dev team. That does not bode well for FF. I don't begrudge the FF devs for taking the money. I would be... more... - Lindsay

"An experiment of sorts to launch a balloon with a disposable camera tethered to the balloon. Instructions on the camera instruct the finder to take photos of anything they like and mail the camera back for a cash reward. If it works I hope to launch several dozen balloons with cameras and develop the film, in order to create a large compilation of all the images to benefit charity." - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet

Taking a break to recharge my iPhone and offload photos to my mac. Sitting in a bar in north Chicago drinking PBR and watching the Cubs game with three old timers. Mr. T is a guest on the broadcast. Apparantly he's sort of a local celebrity here now.
Does he do charity work in Chicago or something? - John E. Bredehoft from fftogo
These guys are pissed that the cubs put soprano in to hit. I have no idea what that means, but they felt strongly about it. - Thomas Hawk
Oh, and watch out in those bars - you can gain 15 pounds in those places. Though I hear there's a way to lose the weight... :) - John E. Bredehoft from fftogo
I think he lives here. He kept saying that kids should stay in school. - Thomas Hawk
? Mr. T's a native Chicagoan. Hyde Park if I'm not mistaken. He's been a celebrity there for ages. - ronin
Now the old timers are arguing about squirrels. - Thomas Hawk
Mr. T lived or still lives in a very upscale town called Lake Forest where he cut down many trees on his property which was against town ordinances. The player was Soriano who they were upset with. - Mark Williamson from BuddyFeed
I pity the fool who comes to my house to speak to me about no stinkin' jibba-jabba town ordinances... - Johnny
Town council put these chains around my neck! (Actually, I think T quit wearing the chains.) - John E. Bredehoft from fftogo
The old timers were actually pretty cool. One guy was super drunk. He kept wanting to do fist smashes with me about every 60 seconds or so in our conversation. The not so drunk guy and I had about a half hour conversation about neon signs. He started a novella years ago called "Neon in the Wilderness." He let me take his portrait. The drunk guy said no. - Thomas Hawk
I got alot of amazing neon today. There are pockets of North Chicago that are as close to 1950 as I've ever seen. Wonderful and amazing storefronts, motels, liquor stores. A lot of it's in the process of being torn down. Car dealerships closed down, empty motels. One motel sign that I got was just all by itself on a vacant lot, its motel had been bulldozed over but they left the sign. I could spend 2 months shooting this stuff in Chicago. An amazing place sort of lost in time. - Thomas Hawk
PBR? I knew you were a hipster. - Wirehead
PBR is $1.50 per draft in North Chicago. What's not to love about that. I also got my only $2 portrait so far on the trip today. I try to upload those as I do them so I'll upload that tomorrow. In total 3 people have asked me for money in Chicago. Two turned my $2 portrait project down. Tommy, who I met tonight outside Superdawg was the first person to take me up on it. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas I forgot to tell you about SuperDawg! Isn't it awsome? I love the little hot dog statues on top the building! Did you get a t-shirt from there? I can't wait to see your photos! - Mark Williamson from BuddyFeed
Glad to hear you made it to SuperDawg. Hope you got some great shot of Maurie and Flaurie (owners and the hot dogs.). - ChiliMac
Yeah supperdawg was great and a great neon sign. Today I went to Al's #1 for another hot Italian beef sandwich. It was even better than that Als by my motel. Also got the Italian shaved ice across the street. Also first rate! Thanks for the recommendations guys! - Thomas Hawk
You were in Little Italy on Taylor St. That is the original - Mark Williamson from BuddyFeed
Tom, indeed. I liked those sandwiches so much that I bought two extras yesterday and brought them back with me on the plane last night for mrsth. I had a great time and enjoyed meeting both of you and everyone else on the photowalk. You live in an amazing city! - Thomas Hawk
Tom would LOVE to do some urban exploring in Chicago. I bet there are some great old abandoned spots. As an outsider I don't know any of them. But will definitely take you up on that the next time I'm out there. It really was one of the best 5 days of shooting I've ever done. - Thomas Hawk
Louis Gray
@orlund you don't need every tool. For me, the core includes 1 blog, 1 Twitter account, 1 network (Facebook), LinkedIn for biz & FriendFeed.
ahem? ;) - Jenna Bilotta
Ahem, Jenna? An RSS feed reader didn't fit this equation for me. I always assume everybody has Google Reader. This was more for published, user generated, content. (Bring it - I could do this all day) - Louis Gray

Mark Zuckerberg just announced that businesses and brands will have full access to the social graph. Here's what that means:
CocaCola will be listed right next to Mike Arrington. - Robert Scoble
And Mike Arrington will have an entry. So will TechCrunch. - Robert Scoble
Monetization! - Robert Scoble
Facebook just became VERY interesting to me. - Robert Scoble
Everyone who likes Snapple is now two degrees away from everyone else who likes Snapple? - Kevin Fox
Due to filtering and real time feed? - Mrinal Desai
Interesting.. Please elaborate - andy brudtkuhl
Mrinal: no, they have a new "brand" type coming for the social graph. They don't call it that, of course, but that's what it is. - Robert Scoble
Can you explain what that means? - Rachel Levy
gotacha - thanks! - Mrinal Desai
Also want to hear more...Twitter is my public but Facebook is my family & friends app... - TechMama Beth Blecherman
hmm...do I want brands to have access to my social graph? I would rather sell them my valuable data not give it away for free. Free for friends, costs for business - David Jacobs
Sounds great, but I will believe it when I see it =) - Bob Ngu
is today the day they get rid of the 5,000 friend limit, since Pages are now Profiles? - Jesse Stay
So... brand (or company/product) will become an entity you can "friend" in Facebook? Am I interpreting this right? Do I get to control their access to my data/friend list? - Brian Roy
Because as we all know, the real value in social networking isn't connecting people with other people, it's connecting people with PRODUCTS. - Ken Sheppardson
Jesse: sort of. They got very close. We have to see the implementation first. - Robert Scoble
+100 Ken - Everyone is looking to monetize by tapping into marketing and PR dollars... - Brian Roy
Will the "likes" feature now be trackable, like it is in FriendFeed? I don't see the purpose of it in FB right now. Why did they add that that feature if you can't see yours and others' likes? - Jennifer Windrum
It means I've lost even more interest in Facebook. I really have no interest in being bought and sold. - Tinfoil 2.0
Ken: you have two phone books, right? One is white, for people, the other is yellow, for companies. These can be presented separately in Facebook too. They just added the yellow pages to the social graph. This is the death of the yellow pages. - Robert Scoble
@Robert the yellow pages died years ago - andy brudtkuhl
Matthew: why don't you? This is an interactive thing. I'm just typing as fast as I can. - Robert Scoble
Matthew, you can reshare Robert's threads (or anyone's) into a room. - FFing Enigma
How about Dislikes? or even Hate or Evil, Right now your only negative comment is silence...judging by the popularity of Simon on AI, "Hated It" would be a Huge "feature." - Jamie Ginsberg
LOL! It's right there under 'More', choose reshare and you'll essentially get the FF bookmarklet: choose the room to send it to and BOOM there you go =) Works the other way around too should you want to share something from a room into your feed - FFing Enigma
Patrick, it's a Beacon nightmare waiting to happen again. One app or one friending of a company, and the floodgates are opened. - Tinfoil 2.0
And salesforce is there, in the background, collecting all our data - I don't really care since I've never had issues with personal information used maliciously. - Mona Nomura
Brands are just catching up on artists and sports guys. They've been branding themselves and using the social graph for a while. - Marc Verstaen
It means they're vying to become more evil than Google? - Richard Akerman
I have a new plan for surviving this recession/depression: standing outside with a sign reading "will sell my social graph for food". - Richard Akerman
Did facebook just become a huge version of GetSatisfaction? - Anton Mannering

E-mail each photo as soon as possible to themoment@cnn.com (one photo per message, 10MB size limit). Don't forget to include your name in the message if you'd like to appear in the list of the contributors. Please only send in photos you took yourself. 3. Go to cnn.com/themoment to see all of the photos in our photosynth - Mona Nomura
Well they did limit it to Photosynth users only - but I am curious as to how they'll handle the traffic and speed of posting. CNN is ALLL up in new media. They are WIN. - Mona Nomura from IM
Wow - the most brilliant use of Photosynth ever! - Jesse Stay

Google Shows 57% More Ads Per Keyword In Q4 (GOOG) - http://www.alleyinsider.com/2009...
Google Shows 57% More Ads Per Keyword In Q4 (GOOG)
"Google (GOOG) ratcheted-up the amount of ads it shows during Q4 to 4.01 per keyword, up from 2.544 in Q3 -- a 57% increase." - Bret Taylor from Bookmarklet
That's quite the increase, which we'd assume is an effort to meet expectations. If the trend continues, they will have to ask America to turn our monitors vertical. - Louis Gray
This is the affects of Google's revenue dial. When revenues are down, Google just serves more ads. - Christian Anderson
I've been dismissed every time I've said it... but Google will be under ever increasing pressure to meet their wallstreet numbers. Instead of a skunkworks-like company we're going to see one much more laser focused on what makes money... ads. - mikepk
It's the tyranny of serving two masters. I think we're just *starting* to see the decline. We're at the peak of the golden age of free... - mikepk
They also direct more traffic to adsense carrying sites. I *almost* proved it! http://piccolbo.blogspot.com/2008... - Antonio Piccolboni
is this due to showing more ads on keywords that already carried ads, or on keywords that didn't previously carry ads? - Samuel Bostock
If they had shown more years of data, we'd be able to tell if it's a Christmas shopping thing. Perhaps people are shopping more, and clicking on ads more, which should cause Google to disable fewer ads. - Amit Patel

Yeah it seems like *everyone* is one facebook now - Bill Pennington
but then facebook is talked about more offline...in general like ebay was years ago.. thats why. blogged about this a while ago. - Rob Sellen :o)
FriendFeed will be the service of 2009. I don't think they've even breached 1m user mark have they? FB at some 49m in foot traffic is ass kicking indeed tough - Enrique Gutierrez from twhirl

I cant believe MySpace.com still gets more traffic over facebook - Jeff Hoard from twhirl
possibly that is because of the music niche tho :o) - Rob Sellen :o)
I mentioned that as in traffic size.. not sure who you are responding to tho ;o) - Rob Sellen :o)
You can't really compare Facebook to Twitter or Ning can you. Facebook has been around for longer. Twitter is only just starting to hit the mainstream. LOTS of growth for twitter to come in 09 I reckon. Friendfeed too. - jjprojects
Twitter and Ning are both up almost 700% this year and FB is "only" up 70% -- why do you say FB grew faster? (obviously they can't grow that fast anymore though because they are so big already) - Paul Buchheit
jjprojects why not compare them? It's fun. Anyway, Twitter, even if it grew four times, which would be totally amazing growth, would still be smaller than Facebook and that's assuming Facebook won't grow at all over next year. - Robert Scoble
I second Paul's question... year-over-year Ning and FriendFeed had much higher relative growth. Of course, that's easier to do the smaller you are, but it's still worth noting. - Patrick Lightbody
Paul: which is more impressive? Growing from 0 to 100 or growing from 100 to 1,000? Most VC's would like to see 100 to 1000. - Robert Scoble
But, FB, FF, and Twitter aren't catering to the same userbase, it would be useless to assume that everyone who uses one will use one of the others. - FFing Enigma
Can you imagine 50 million people all tweeting at once? - Nicola Quinn
Percentages can be misleading. Two is 100% more than one, but isn't exactly "significant growth." - Tanath
Two is 100% more than one! - Gabe
Robert, ha yeah it's fun. Just saying it would be interesting to look at the % growth at the same stage of development of each service rather than the overall size. 4000% growth is impressive for Friendfeed for sure. It will be interesting to see just how much Twitter grows in 09 - If the @britneyspears' of the world continue to jump in. - jjprojects
Having said that, it's also interesting to look at the overall numbers. For instance YouTube just walks all over any other video service. Massively. - jjprojects
Chris: revenues almost always follow fast, continuous, growth in users. - Robert Scoble
Chris: they will. I'm not too worried about that. - Robert Scoble
If Facebook the social network ever goes down, I'm pretty sure that the ad system they have could quickly be turned into serious competition for Google AdSense/AdWords. Even if actual profit isn't there, the potential sure is, and it grows with each new user and each new advertisement. Facebook will do just fine. - Chris Charabaruk
I think Facebook has done a fantastic job. They iterate fast and adapt very well. The quickly realized that the app platform didn't work well and quickly moved from a app-centric to a content-centric strategy. Also thanks to the focus on some core features such as status updates, photos and posted items engagement has gone up lately. The identify and address book information they have is worth billions. I have been very impressed with them. - Bindu Reddy
I agree with Bindu. Facebook makes mistakes... a lot of mistakes... but they learn quickly from them. I've definitely found myself using it more (again) after the latest redesign. - Eric P
Purchasing Facebook would probably decrease its value. I think it's in some kind of corporate wonderland, where buying it or refusing to fund it each is a bad decision. Their data collection is probably worth billions by this point, however, especially to anyone wanting to compete with Google. - Chris Charabaruk
Seems like most people agree. Fundamentally the difference that FB is made for the mainstream where as FF is not, but might go mainstream is a difference so big that it doesn't really matter to compare growth between them - Peter Efland
FACEBOOK IS ON FIRE... well noted. Everybody at my workplace is now on there, including our HR director... Note to self: BEHAVE YOURSELF ONLINE...damn! - Susan Beebe
Thought this was interesting from the LA times, Facebook didn't like names with one letter. http://www.latimes.com/busines... - MedicalQuack
You can always tell what is or will go mainstream because people stop talking about it. - Jesse Stay
