Review: The Bogleheads’ Guide To Investing - http://encephalosponge.com/2011...

This was an excellent book but not without a few flaws. It's got a lot of information, which makes it useful as a reference book but troublesome to put into action. If you're under 35 and have never taken control of your personal finances, I highly recommend checking out Ramit Sethi's book I Will Teach You To Be Rich first. Come back to this book once your finances are in order and then start to fill in a few gaps and garner a larger breadth of personal finances knowledge that will last you for the rest of your life! - Jonathan Blackhall

You can tell he makes the right arguments but they're not strong enough. If you're under 40 and would like a great book for getting started with investing I would recommend Ramit Sethi's I Will Teach You To Be Rich over this one any day of the week. I bought this book after reading Sethi's, and I bought it because I hoped it would have more detailed direction on how to analyze and choose my own portfolio of index funds (Sethi describes it but in as much detail as I would like). I was disappointed to find that my desired info wasn't in this book either. Furthermore, I felt like Solin's investment strategies were very conservative for a person my age, and I felt like he didn't adequately describe risk and the benefit of increased returns on longterm gains. Maybe Solin's and Sethi's books are just targetted at different audiences, but I feel like most younger people would be better served with Sethi's better-presented information and more entertaining writing style. - Jonathan Blackhall
