FilzFelt was founded by two felt loving designers, Kelly Smith and Traci Roloff. FilzFelt is a combination of the German word for felt (filz) and the English (felt). Since we’re Americans importing German felt, it seemed like the right fit! This female run business prides itself on simplicity in design, beautiful photography, good packaging and jaw-droppingly great customer service.

"...I pretty regularly watch the TED videos. Today I watched a talk given by Mike Rowe who does the Dirty Jobs tv show. In it he gives some interesting insight on dirty jobs and questioning if “Pursing your passion” is the right answer. In a sense his talk was the counter-point to the Four Hour Workweek. His thoughts on the balance of the lives of these people with what we might think of as “less than ideal” were quite in line with what I saw when I went to my training class a few weeks ago and shared a class with “Working class” men. I’m not sure what the full lesson is, and I think Mike Rowe is still asking some questions there as well, but his talk is definitely one I recommend, and so I’ve embedded it below."

Hello all! Hope all is going well. This past weekend was my birthday, and we did a bit of over-celebrating! (Which is the main reason there was no post this weekend :) ) Now I’m back to bring yall some great, high-quality free Script fonts. As with all free fonts, its often hard to find really good ones. But I think I’ve managed to compile a very good list of free script fonts, from handwritten to grunge. I’m hoping this saves yall a bit of ever-important time! I’m including a preview and download link for each font. They are all free for commercial use to my knowledge, but check the licensing just to be sure.

The idea that the best way to learn a subject is to teach it may be the bane of undergraduates left to the mercies of graduate teaching assistants, but it's remarkably true. In medical school, the cliché "See one; do one; teach one" has become a dominant pedagogical principle. In fact, George Bernard Shaw's notorious anti-educational quip gets flipped — instead of "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach," it's "Those who teach effectively learn how to do."

I can sum up every article, book and column written by notable management experts about managing IT in two sentences: "Geeks are smart and creative, but they are also egocentric, antisocial, managerially and business-challenged, victim-prone, bullheaded and credit-whoring. To overcome these intractable behavioral deficits you must do X, Y and Z."

So we can up with a solution that would be cheap but, for the most part at least, would be able to handle whatever traffic came their way - put the static pages of the site on Amazon S3 and run the website from there, but bring users back to the DB driven back-end for the pages that needed it (logins, user accounts, contributions, volunteering, etc) - all of which we were able to do with a just a couple of hours of time and a couple of quick and dirty scripts. Here's what we did, assuming a linux/apache2 hosting environment:

I couldn't help but love Chris Yeh's Outline of Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces that Shape Our Decisions. It's a fascinating look into the surprisingly predictable psychology that powers human actions and reactions, and I think there are some definitive lessons we can take away from the piece and apply to web marketing. Let's run through the list:

It's a fascinating examination of why human beings are wired and conditioned to react irrationally. We human beings are a selfish bunch, so it's all the more surprising to see how easily we can be manipulated to behave in ways that run counter to our own self-interest. This isn't just a "gee-whiz" observation; understanding how and why we behave irrationally is important. If you don't understand how these irrational behaviors are triggered, the marketing weasels will use them against you.

Until this year I was just a TA for various programming classes, which basically meant all I had to do was show up. This year, though, they didn’t have anyone to teach Intro to Java. I’d been working on Ruby on Rails workshops for women, and I saw a chance to extend the work to kids.
