I have an Aeron chair that I bought from Amazon.com 1.5 years ago, right after my back surgery. I had it reshipped via myus and DHL. It's the best investment ever. Worth every "penny!" By the way, before buying from US, I tried all three at home for a week: Aeron, Mirra and Celle. I decided on the Aeron, this is by far the most functional and comfortable one. The incredible, unhuman, "don't buy from us" TR price tag made me consider ordering from US. The total cost was even lower than buying from UK.
- Cem ARGUN
Not for the Mirra, but I would have my company buy it :-)
- Todd Hoff
It's still too expensive in the US. Ah well, when I'm a millionaire. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I'd rather have a colonoscopy than sit in in an Aeron for even 5 minutes. Worst chair design ever. For $500-600 I can get an Office Master that is much more comfortable and adjustable.
- Alex Scoble
Alex-I totally agree with you on the comfort of the Aeron chair. Not only is it uncomfortable, it takes months to adjust to fit you right and yet it is held up as the most ergonomic chair ever. UI should also be considered in "ergonomics." The Aeron is ubiquitous and pedestrian. That being said, the Aeron does deserve a place in history as it was very innovative (ahem, in 1989) and...

Sure would. Not the Mirra. But definitely the Aeron. I spend more time in my chair than in my bed these days.

I can tell you from experience this is by far the most comfortable chair I have.

Shit, Alex. Wrong chair. Meant to say the Embody. I'm sitting in a chair now that is killing me and I spent way too much on. Next time I'm going all out.
- Graham English
Too bad it's not the late 90s again, you could pick up an Aeron (if that's your bag; it's not mine) for a song. A whole warehouse full, in fact.
- Andy Bakun
I sit in an Aeron everyday. Katie's right. it took me a month or so to get the fit "just right". but I don't have any complaints with it; except I'd like it to be taller.
- jbrotherlove
I think they're overrated. They became a status symbol during the dot com boom and I think there are chairs as good or better available for less money.
- Spidra Webster
I had an Aeron provided to me at my last job. It was "OK" but not terribly more comfortable then anything else. I'd find the nicest chair I could find for 1/3rd the price and call it good.
- veo
I would yes, if it helps my posture and helped me sit up on the computer better.
- Patrick
from twhirl
I sat in an Aeron for three years at the tail end of the dotcom boom. After several years spent in inferior Steelcase chairs I had to wait until this year to get the chance to use a Mirra. I can tell you the wave of relief and relaxation that washed over my back as soon as I sat down was palpable. Of course it all depends upon your body shape. Mine just suits a Mirra perfectly.
- Tim Ostler
I paid ~ $800 CDN for an Aeron 8 years ago and I still like it. (wow, £900 in the UK! prices really are a lot higher there.) I kinda want a Freedom too, though. (I figure I would use one at home and the other at work.)
- Andrew C
The complaints about Aerons I'd agree with are armrest adjustments (they improved that design now?), the annoyance of having to re-tighten the tilt resistance, and the hard metal (or is it plastic?) rim along the front edge of the seat pan. That last bit isn't annoying in the default sitting position if the seat is the right size for you, but you can't put a foot up under your knee - or...

i would - if i had £800 to spare at the moment... you sit in those chairs most of the day and these ergonomic chairs help your posture. OR, you have constant back pain like me...

The 360 web site and service in general is far superior to the PlayStation. In this case you get what you pay for.

I still chewed AND swallowed. With difficulty.
- Kamilah Gill
How brave. I might not have approached the room, let alone get to the bottom of the plate.
- Julian
No, I only had one bite. There was no Plate of Chitterlings. That could have been fatal.
- Kamilah Gill
I think it's a mind over matter thing. I used to love Christmas because that meant chittlins. Then I found out what they were. LOL Oddly enough, it was the only pork product that didn't make me sick, too.
- Admiral Anika
It's not about what they are, it's about how they tasted. I've eaten snails. No problem. And Anika, it amazes me that you liked these poopy-tasting things even in the past when you proclaim how you hate different chocolates and all other kinds of things. They didn't stink so much unless you smelled the pot up close. John, they're some kind of pig intestine... thing. Which isn't so horrible in itself. Some sausages use intestines. I don't like eggs. These have an eggy texture. Eggs with a dash of poop,
- Kamilah Gill
Julian, I hadn't even seen a chitlin in person until today. True story.
- Kamilah Gill
Poopy-tasting? That sounds like they weren't cleaned. I remember my mom and aunts spending a good couple of hours cleaning them before they were cooked. And you have to keep in mind, the last time I ate them, I was like 6. I didn't know any better. I used to think McDonald's was good too then. LOL
- Admiral Anika
These had been cleaned all day by my cousin's wife. She and one of her kids love them. They're experts about the whole thing. I think they were about as clean as they were going to get. They just had this poopy undertaste that I couldn't smell but could taste when I started chewing. It was very subtle. Not that I've been in the habit of eating poop, mind you. It's like that gross taste you get in your mouth when you're around some very stinky poop. Kind of farmy. Barnyard.
- Kamilah Gill
You're a brave woman. I am such a coward when it comes to trying food.
- Mary Carmen
*lmao* I. AM. DYING. glad you had your chitlin experience, Kamilah. you can cross that off your bucket list.
- jbrotherlove
It is so totally and completely checked off the list. I can tell my grandchildren. I have pictorial evidence. Wikipedia is saying that putting an onion or something in the pot might help with the poopiness. That might have worked...
- Kamilah Gill
if it makes you feel better, every time I've tried chitlins (which hasn't been too often), I've *always* noted the poopiness with my nose and tastebuds. none for me, thanks.
- jbrotherlove
I sympathize! Chitterlings are nasty. My tummy don't like tummy. I'll eat anything else pretty much. Oh and tongue. Unless it's some supper yummy lengua taco fuggedaboutit.
- Adrian
Tongue's on my list to try someday. Possibly also only once. And tripe. A Chinese restaurant here serves some.
- Kamilah Gill
I've had tongue tacos a few times. They're pretty good. No weird flavor at all.
- ha3rvey (Ho)^3
I haven't had a chance to try tongue, but I'd give it a shot. Tripe is good, but I guess it depends on who is cooking.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I tried tripe once, without knowing exactly what it was. It was one of the most disgusting things I've eaten.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
It's not the flavor of tongue or chitlins but the texture. Both invoke the gag reflex, which is strange because I've gotten over all my childhood hangups otherwise.
- Adrian
I do like brains though! Tacos de cabeza... yum, yum.
- Adrian
I have never and will never eat those things. Vivid memories of walking in the kitchen then promptly leaving because I was overwhelmed by the stench. You are more of a woman than I for trying those things.
- EricaJoy
Brave woman! But dammit now I have something else for my bucket list... %)
- Ted Russ
There are some foods I will never "try just once" before refusing them. This tops the list.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
You are crazy brave, Kamilah. I don't think I could have done it. I have somehow avoided chitlins the whole time I've lived in the South. (Not complaining!)
- Ayşe E.
Fried might be a little less gross. Maybe. With *lots* of onion and hot sauce. I did not even know that the chitlins were there until my cousin's wife told me. So the smell was not pronounced until I got up close to the pot. Interestingly, I guess they're popular in parts of Europe, too. Remember, folks, they're not that different from what's used for sausage casings! And probably sausage fillings sometimes, too.
- Kamilah Gill
There is no such thing as good chit'lins. They will always be gross, no matter what you do to them. (Yes, I've had them.)

- Spidra Webster
Aw, thanks, edythe. I have a very big list of stuff to do at least once in my life. Most of those involve trying weird foods, or sometimes just things I haven't gotten around to yet. Still haven't had lobster, or truffles (the fungus), many different cheeses, etc. Some folks have stuff like skydiving on their list of things to do. I'll pass on most of the extreme sports and go with the extreme foods instead. I love satisfying that kind of curiosity.
- Kamilah Gill
I think I'm adopted. Both of my parents love (or in my dad's case "loved") the nasty little things. I'd leave the house when my mom cooked them.
- MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS
Next time ask try "Chittlins." They taste a lot better! ;o)
- Ron Thompson
no lobster yet? you've got something really good to look forward to. :)

My cousin ran me outta the room 2 days ago when she plopped a bowl of that next to me. I ate them as a kid. My mother cooks them in the garage, and that's where they stay until they eat them.

I love how people think because they are actors or musicians in the public eye, that we care about what they think about things. Hey Angelina, try picking a good script and leave relationship talk to those with degrees in it.

Derrick killed it. Totally what Derrick said. Hey! Angelena! You be a ho. hey! brad! RUN! Run like the wind brother!
- Morgan Haley
How long have they been together already? I'd say things are working pretty well /for them/.
- Michael W. May
Well I actually find it sort of interesting, Derrick. And I mean, she gets asked all the time. So she answered. It's not like she wrote an op ed piece, it was an interview. I find her point of view sort of refreshing. Relationship "experts" are kind of all over the map, aren't they, anyway? I mean who is a relationship expert whose opinion interests you deeply? Not that I give a shit whether Brangelina does or doesn't succeed, but still. They obviously have an unconventional relationship, so good for them.

I'm not hating on her, entirely...or those who elect to participate in non-traditional relationship; I'm sure there are those who would raise eyebrows at me being gay. But The Changeling? Wanted? Priorities, Angelina. PRI-OR-ITIES.
- Derrick
Didn't she get an Oscar nom for Changeling? And I actually loved Wanted but I'm dumb.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
I liked Wanted too - then again, all I expected was a pretty movie with some sexy stunts and gunplay. If she did a press release, I could see the negativity, but if people keep asking her these questions, I find it refreshing that she is giving an answer that is relevant to her, and not just saying the same things that famous people always say about their relationships.
- Jennifer Dittrich
bad day in pop culture for relationships...
- edythe
the obsession over Jolie & Pitt's relationship nauseates me. however, I'm a fan of couples who make their relationship work on *their* terms. monogamy is great - if it works for you. if it doesn't, there are options. and there is nothing wrong with those options as long as people are honest and not hurting anyone.
- jbrotherlove
I'm not sure I would generalize this to all relationships, but it's probably healthier for people in relationships with celebrities not to be jealous of their partners. Someone in that position is going to draw too much attention and have too many temptations to be perfectly faithful.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
john, good point. i'm still quite bummed out about susan and tim and want to know more about why they split.

I thought it was cutely self-referential and definitely a welcome aside for a movie that otherwise takes itself a little too seriously.
- Akiva Moskovitz
The part that I hated was when they actually had lines about 'terror'. I mean, c'mon. Cameron might as well have interrupted the movie with a PSA.
- Akiva Moskovitz
"Unobtanium" is an apologetic wink to hard-sci-fi snobs.
- Christopher A Carr
I probably should have found it kind of cute or tongue in cheek. But really it was just one of the first (of many) things to totally take me out of the movie.
- Joe Pierce
Wasn't that in that silly "The Core" movie?
- Yolanda
Yolanda, that was the other film in the link i posted, so yes it was apprently, although i never watched the film properly, even though film4 keeps repeating it! i agree, it wasnt all that great a film!
- Halil
I just saw and liked the movie. For me unobtanium was take-it-or-leave, but the war/terror allusions, nay, PSAs (++Akiva) were eyeroll jazzercise inducing.
- Micah Wittman
I never said the movie wasn't pretty. It really is. But I'm not willing to give the movie a pass just based off of that. The 3D earns it nothing in my book, the movie is only going to be viewed in that kind of 3D for a few months, after that it'll have to hold up in 2D for the rest of it's existence. Its hard to tell, but I really didn't hate Avatar. I was disappointed by it, and I think it is getting too much of a pass by people. But it was ok.
- Joe Pierce
the story's not good, and I judge people who give it a pass. It's insane that you can have a 2 hour and 40 minute movie with so few details about anything related to the plot or characters. the only character with any depth at all is jake, and he doesn't have a lot.
- Richard Lawler
it was pretty much a videogame story, without the game.
- Richard Lawler
Wait a second, are you all saying that you've never enjoyed a single movie just on its visuals or its action? Every movie you've ever watched that is entertaining had a deep, complex plot? To me personally, I basically agree with echostreamer: it's not really about "giving the story a pass," it's about the story doing its job, which in this case was to get you from one groundbreaking visual tapestry to the next. I think it did it well enough that I didn't mind it (I chuckled at unobtainium, btw).
- Chieze Okoye
A movie doesn't have to be deep and complex. It does have to make sense and explain itself, Avatar doesn't. You are giving it a pass because the story didn't do its job. It never gave any of the surrounding characters any depth or any motivation for their actions. Even in an action movie, that's unacceptable.
- Richard Lawler
What? This is the far future when humans have developed great technology but have also ravaged Earth. One company is searching for <insert-resource-name> which leads them to <planet-where-resource-exists> and conflict with the native population of <insert-race-name>, which happens to live on top of a huge store of <insert-resource-name>. Motivation of company: Money/<resource>....
- Chieze Okoye
I mean yes, the secondary characters are all more properly called caricatures, but to say that they didn't have any motivation is a bit much as they all had quite clear and simple motivations that were easily understood. Not unlike almost every other action movie ever made.
- Chieze Okoye
Chieze - That covers absolutely zero bases. You know what you didn't mention in your breakdown? A single individual character. you know why you didn't? Because none of them have any identifying characteristics, you can't tell them from each other. Every good action movie has more characters that are developed better. Avatar is not a good action movie.
- Richard Lawler
The company didn't go on a suicide revenge mission at the end, the barrel chested war caricature did. Indigenous race didn't fall in love with an alien, the one character did. Pilot B didn't go up against an entire army to help some alien race, the one character did. Too bad we never got to know any of them at all.
- Richard Lawler
But like, the Bourne Trilogy had zero memorable characters besides Bourne himself but I would call that an excellent series of action movies. This is just the first example off of the top of my head. I didn't mention any specific characters in my overview because the text would have gotten too long and I was just trying to give an explanatory gist.
- Chieze Okoye
Bourne Trilogy sucked, the books weren't any good and the movies were empty shells. I said good action movies. and every bourne flick I saw had at least two or three better developed characters more than avatar.
- Richard Lawler
I basically disagree with everything you said there (except the part about the books not being any good). I guess we won't see eye-to-eye on this one.
- Chieze Okoye
Good action movies are things like Die Hard, Aliens, Indiana Jones. In those flicks individual characters have their own identity and motivation, because they're well written. Avatar is a two hour 40 minute special fx ramble with no depth to anyone except Jake Sully.
- Richard Lawler
Wow, if you thought only Jake Sully had depth, you weren't watching the movie close enough.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I think everyone saying this movie sucks because it's storyline isn't "complex" are just jumping on a bandwagon and being contrary for contrarian sake. The story is simple, true. The characters that count are believable and the story does what it needs to do. It gets you from point a to b to c in the visual storyline. What I don't see people talking about is how successfully Cameron is...

So...I'm expected to take a mediocre plot in an "epic" film because it "does what it needs to?" I'm the douchebag or expecting a story to try to do something more than just the bare minimum that is required? .. I could also point out that saying people whose opinions differ from yours are just stating them to be contrary and to jump on a bandwagon is a really douchebaggy statement.

The movie was in development how many years and it still had little to no story? I was excited a few years back, but now all it can do it disappoint. I am waiting for someone to say something that would lead me to believe otherwise.

Amber, Avatar is pretty (can't say I didn't try).

Amber, it's REALLY pretty. I think that honestly you're best just spending the $10 now to see it in 3D in theaters because that experience is not really replicable anywhere else.
- Chieze Okoye
It's really pretty outside and that is free, and the story is better.
- Amber, Random Time Lord
It HAS a story, and it tells the story it's got well. It's just that the story's been told a thousand times before, and it does very little new with the formula. Once you take away the visuals and 3D, you're left with a pretty routine oppressed-people-with-an-unlikely-savior story. I still think it was worth watching in 3D because the technology is really amazing, but the claims of...

- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I kept looking for a place to jump in over there, but most of what I had to say was already getting said and the same arguments were being brought up against it. I didn't think jumping in just to say "Nuh-uh!!!" would have been very effective.

I can wait for the movie that uses the stepping stone. I'm all CGIed out and if that is all that it has going for it, I'll pass.

Hee! Yeah, once the guys get going over there, it can be tough to jump in. The funny thing is, that thread is still going (nearly up to 200 comments now) but no one's been talking about Avatar for a long time.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Amber, if it helps. As much bitching as I've done over the movie. I would still recommend seeing it t least once. Just don't expect it to be as epic as all that.
- Joe Pierce
Titanic could have been a decent movie if about an hour of the useless crap had been taken out.

Okay, bad analogy. Some people just aren't as into the technical side of movies or cinematic milestones. Nothing wrong with that.

I can respect all the money they spent making it, and all the people that got paid to make the thing look as real as possible. But I'm not going to spend money on it.

Look, every movie fails if you drill down on it hard enough and long enough. The endeavor is not unlike constructing a modern building - in this case a sky-scraper. I love a 'perfect' character home too, but why not admire each craft work for what it is?! Ok. Got that out of my system.

Micah, that's exactly what I'm saying (3 comments up). Also, Amber, I think that you are selling this quite short when you say "it's pretty outside and free and has a better story." Yes it's CGI heavy, but this is really the first movie that I've seen with this...

It very clearly doesn't tell it's story well. I call this movie artwork. Its a shame that we don't have silent films anymore so people would STFU about the plot and look at the movie for what it is; a stunning 2.5 hour moving work of art. Remove the words (leave the score) and people might stop freaking out about characters and start paying attention to the pure artistry in the visuals, which is really what the movie is about.
- EricaJoy
That was pretty bad, it distracted me from enjoying the shiny every time they mentioned it. Thankfully that was not often.

I second EricaJoy's comment. It's a shame that people need to find a negative in a (visiually) nicely made movie.
- liladreams
I'm really enjoying how riled up Richard is over this. And I fully agree with him: of all things to take a stand on in life, Avatar's script is definitely where one of refined taste should draw the line. I mean really. How could anyone possibly have an alternative and opposing viewpoint? It's preposterous!

- Roberto Bonini
Do I need to? I think there's a 70 minute review on youtube that covers all the points necessary. Some would do well to apply its lessons to this movie. (tell me something about the characters that isn't how they look or what their job is)
- Richard Lawler
I havent seen the movie yet Richard. But if its as bad as Star Wars for plot.....
- Roberto Bonini
It's better than star wars in that it has a main character and he has some (not much, but some depth to him. the prequels, especially TPM, lack that entirely. If you're interested in the effects it's worth seeing once, but leave your brain at the door.
- Richard Lawler
Richard, that YouTube review is awesome but I can easily take the character challenge with Avatar. Even the minor characters in Avatar have more clear, personal definition than the characters in Star Wars (with the exception of Chacon who might as well have been a flight computer). Of course, that might be more derogatory toward Star Wars than it is complimentary toward Avatar; I mean, when you've set the bar so bloody low...

The question really is: Can Avatar be considered opera? A simplistic plot can be justified if it lends itself to the grand themes of mythos and opera. Star Wars does that. Can you justify that Avatar does the same?
- Melanie Reed
I'd have to see it more than once to even consider such a question.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva - beyond the main guy? For example, Grace - she went to stanford and.... what brought her to pandora? what happened, who decided to close the school and/or why? the company brought her to pandora, what was the reasoning at that time? is she (or any of the other scientists) leaving anything behind on earth when they side with the na'vi?
- Richard Lawler
Absolutely. I would put Avatar on par with movies like SW: A New Hope, 2001, etc. I would recommend watching the episode of Totally Rad Show where they review Avatar. They pretty much say everything I think about the movie. It's just an amazing film. http://revision3.com/trs...
- Jason Huebel
It's ironic that the only character that is memorable in the Bourne Trilogy is the main character, seeing as how it's about guy trying to figure out his identity.
- Andy Bakun
from Android
Richard, that was all explained. She's a botanical expert, the entire planet is full of dangerous flora; that's an easy one. They closed the school when it was made clear that no matter how much they tried to 'civilize' the Na'Vi, it didn't stop them from still attacking the miners so it was seen as a waste of money and time. And it's stated almost immediately before she appears on the...

Another comparison (defining where to place this film in genre): Compare Avatar and Tron. What do they have in common, each for its day.
- Melanie Reed
I dunno, Avatar is in it's own league, IMO. It's a space opera, but you really can't directly compare it to any other film.
- Jason Huebel
when did it say when they closed the school? They said "we tried building them a school" they never said when it was closed or why. In fact, they never even actually showed the na'vi attacking the miners, only talked about it.and ok, she hates people, but what about the other scientists on pandora? they all flip sides real quick, no family for any of them?
- Richard Lawler
Also, Richard, I think what you're missing here is that this isn't an ensemble movie. It isn't M*A*S*H. It's a science fiction action adventure movie. Deep, Altman-like examination of character isn't required to move the plot forward. Any character development is a side effect of the action and not the other way around. And I repeat, it's a sci-fi action adventure movie. Did you get as...

How is it operatic? Is it dealing with large themes: Good vs. Evil. (or are those relative and somewhat gray based on perspective?) Are those clearly defined? Are there three acts (yet)?
- Melanie Reed
Does the protagonist clearly know what to do or is he conflicted in the end?
- Melanie Reed
Akiva - I don't need to know where he went to college, I do need to know why the characters make the decisions they make. It's never explained why Grace left the na'vi at first and why they're apparently so reluctant to accept her back. None of the na'vi have any individual reactions at all. Evil Guy has no reason to be evil after the battle is clearly lost. He's not fighting for his life, he just goes on a suicidal rampage for no reason. It goes on and on.
- Richard Lawler
@Melanie, there is definitely an internal conflict for both main characters. There is also an obvious story of good vs. evil. (BTW, have you seen it yet?)
- Jason Huebel
How is neytiri a main character? We never see her except when she's interacting with jake.
- Richard Lawler
You're kidding right? Did you see the same movie I did?
- Jason Huebel
Yeah, and Alice in Wonderland is a stupid story because you never see any characters except when they're interacting with Alice. Oy vey already.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Now you're lying akiva. I didn't say anything like that. But you wouldn't call them main characters now would you. that was my point.
- Richard Lawler
Jason, let me know the part when neytiri talked to anyone without jake present. The movie has one main character.
- Richard Lawler
I'm done. I don't have any interest in getting into an argument today. I'm on vacation.
- Jason Huebel
Richard, you do realize that this movie is told entirely through the eyes of Jake Sully, don't you? That's why we rarely see anyone that isn't in the room with him. Hell, the movie tells us that with its opening and closing shots. One eye in the beginning symbolizes a limited view of the world; two eyes at the end reflecting a fuller (but probably not complete) view of the world. In fact, are there ANY scenes without him involved (even if off-camera)?
- Akiva Moskovitz
So does the movie have one main character or two.
- Richard Lawler
I thought you left jason, if you're still around, you can surely describe how neytiri meets the criteria for a main character in any way. also, we see a lot of things that Jake doesn't see. But of course, I apparently didn't watch the movie.
- Richard Lawler
It matters how you define a main character, Richard. For me, a main character is essential to the core of the plot and usually has a lot of screen time. By that definition, Sully, Neytiri, and Guaritch are all main characters. I don't think a character loses 'main' status simply because it doesn't have 'alone time' on-screen. And I've seen some movies where the two main characters never...

@Melanie, so it's a children's book? I would imagine that would mean it's a bit watered down compared to the movie. I was hoping for an adult novel. Although I would imagine since this has always been a movie concept first, there might not be one.
- Jason Huebel
Also, I had asked if there were any scenes in which he wasn't involved, not things that he didn't see.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Sometimes when a story is told over and over again with no variation, it's because the story is important and most people aren't listening. My guess is that this same story will continue to be told until the underlying problems which draw storytellers to it are addressed. (just a random thought)
- Lo
That's weird, because I always thought the main character was the one who experienced things for the audience. Guaritch and Neytiri never have any experiences in the movie except in relation to their affect on jake. That's why he's the main character. The world revolves around him and his experiences
- Richard Lawler
Akiva - what you actually said was "told entirely through the eyes of Jake Sully" I inferred you meant saw since you said his eyes and that's what they're usually used for.
- Richard Lawler
I think the problem does need to be addressed, I have not yet mated for life with a ten foot blue alien version of zoe saldana. This is an underlying problem that needs to be rectified.
- Richard Lawler
@Jason an interesting comment by the Author through a marketing choice, wouldn't you agree?
- Melanie Reed
Richard, I meant that more metaphorically. Sully's the Frodo of Avatar; he's the device used to introduce us to the world. And, you're right, the audience is only given one main character to really bond with (although we can empathize with Neytiri and have antipathy toward Guaritch). I also agree that the script's weak but, ultimately, I feel the value of the movie is greater than the sum of its parts.
- Akiva Moskovitz
And about your last comment, Richard, Cameron was on The Tonight Show and joking how he had a team dedicated specifically to Neytiri's butt and that it took them nine months to perfect it.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Nine months well spent, clearly. It's impossible for me to empathize with neytiri because other than her inexplicable love for jake (he betrays her and is directly responsible for the destruction of her home and death of her father by his inaction of not telling them what's coming and action of giving info to quaritch, this is reason for a quittal on the planet i'm from) I know nothing...

- Richard Lawler
Richard, I think you're on to something. :)

I guess this is testament to both Saldana's acting ability and the technical artistry of the film because I got a lot more out of Neytiri than what I suppose was explicit in the script. And, well, love is inexplicable anyway but her attraction to him was two-fold: first, he was different than anyone she had ever met before which made him a 'rebellious bad boy' and that he was tirelessly...

I don't see how his willingness to face death is notable, every na'vi we ever see has done exactly the same thing. To her, he, should be nothing special, and yet he gets three second chances at life when should be killed immediately before he ever does anything remarkable.
- Richard Lawler
and how much does it suck to be tsu tey, you not only lose your girl to a cripple, you only get to be chief for like 5 minutes before dying in a battle planned by the same guy who took your girl and you'd have been better off killing on sight.
- Richard Lawler
That's true but she knows he's not Na'Vi. He's human and STILL willing to die for the Na'Vi. Furthermore, she follows him into battle because of his legendary feat but I don't think she actually truly reconnects with him until she sees him as who he really is for the first time, as a tiny, delicate, little human.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Hah, yeah. That guy gets the shit end of the stick from scene one.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Anyway, I think a lot of your points are good, Richard, even if I don't agree with them. I clearly got a lot more satisfaction out of the script than you did. Of course, I went in with low expectations and, I suppose, ended up doing most of the heavy lifting in the end. But I'm all right with that. I really liked the movie and I'm looking forward to seeing it again. Would I watch it again without the IMAX 3D, though? Probably not. So I suppose that says a lot, too.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I get that, but it doesn't make sense to me, he doesn't really have a lot of options. If he hadn't gone w/ the navi plan from jump, they were gonna kill him anyway right then, his life's been hanging in the balance for a while and she wasn't particularly impressed the first time.
- Richard Lawler
Plus, through their unreasonably deep understanding of avatar technology, she knows he isn't really risking his life, he's a "dreamwalker."
- Richard Lawler
@Richard: Yes, and for me my inability to commune psychically (or whatever) with plants and have hot tree-of-souls sex is also a problem that needs urgent attention :D
- Lo
Richard, a key point in whether something is operatic. Does Sully really have to put his life at risk as say even Neo does in The Matrix?
- Melanie Reed
Once he turns his back and they dropship the avatar beds all up in na'vi territory late in the film, yes. But I'm troubled by that because really, what did he have to lose, his human body sucked (though fixable) and his family was dead, of course he falls in love with being a na'vi. The one thing I found satisfactory about the story was the explanation of how he came to be in the avatar program at all.
- Richard Lawler
Again Richard, I think you are on to something. There has to be a sacrifice more important than what is supplied here for a true hero to confront. The stakes must be incredibly high. Frodo has this. Neo has this to an extent(He begins a pattern of where we are beginning to lose this clear line in stories). Also, if memory serves, Dances With Wolves never overtly or even really...

It's hard to say. After he destroys the cameras, Jake still isn't fighting the army yet. It's only after they realize what happened and lock him up that he takes the fight to them, and at that point, any opportunity to get his legs back and live the human life he wants is probably long gone.
- Richard Lawler
I think I'm going to need to see this movie again. Not only was it fun the first time, but it's even more entertaining watching people go off over it. *laughs softly* Merry Christmas!

I'm not sure that I'd for sure name it best (it's kind of unfair to compare all different sorts of TV shows together in one category), but it's certainly the one I return to over and over and over again. (Too bad not all of the seasons were of equal quality, though.)

Part of the impact of West Wing was the marked contrast between Josiah Bartlett's administration and the real-life version under Bush and Cheney.
- Mark "DerBingle" J
That may account for some of its popularity, Mark, but I think West Wing was popular for what marks a lot of Sorkin shows: excellent dialogue, fantastic mix of comedy and drama, supernal ensemble casting...and the extra for West Wing was being able to geek out over all that governmental stuff. The dialogue was so thick with it that repeat viewings reward you. Takes several times seeing an ep before you really feel you've gotten everything out of it.

Without looking at other answers: Homicide, particularly the first year.

First season of Miami Vice... unfadeable baby!

better than TWW: Arrested Development, Futurama, Veronica Mars, The Simpsons (uh, stopping somewhere between end of season 9 and season 12 at the latest), 30 Rock, Community, and Newsradio. Action, Pushing Daisies, and Life, too if we can sneak in those shows that were "cancelled before their time". Buffy up to S5 but not past it. Esp considering the relative doldrums of TWW s3 - s6.

- SuezanneC Baskerville
What does cowed into standing for the president mean?
- Mona Nomura
intimidated - one is "supposed" to stand up when the president enters a room, at least according to the show. it's a statist ritual, like singing songs of praise to governments. i find it offensive.

Respect != intimidation. Besides, what's wrong with showing respect to ranked officers? POTUS is the Chief of Staff.

People say I'm an extremely picky eater. They confuse my strong revulsion and opinions about certain items as being "picky". That is not my problem. These are the things I won't eat:
Chocolate items I don't make. Total snob about where I get my chocolate from. I won't eat brownies, fudge, chocolate cake or chocolate frosting.
- Admiral Anika
Peanut butter. I'll eat a PayDay, but PB sauces or peanuts in my food = GAG.
- Admiral Anika
Fruity meat dishes. I don't like sweet meats.
- Admiral Anika
Pancakes. This actually is a childhood block. We had to eat them so often when my brother was little because it was the only thing he would eat.
- Admiral Anika
I guess Anika will be taken to a restaurant if she ever visits my home.o_0 Peanut butter is closest thing to heaven!
- Janet
Coconut. It smells like suntan lotion. I will use a little coconut oil in some dishes, but if it's not Thai or Malaysian food, I won't eat it.
- Admiral Anika
How else do I describe that? Orange chicken is wrong. Raisins in food is wrong. I used to cry picking raisins out of my biryani when I was a kid.
- Admiral Anika
Now I want oatmeal with walnuts and coconut and raisins.
- Christopher Harley
Yeah. This certainly isn't picky. I can't believe anyone could ever make this mistake.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I won't eat cole slaw unless I make it. No one else does it right.
- Admiral Anika
Just curious Anika, how many times as an adult have you retried these things? Sometimes it takes a mature palate to appreciate.
- Janet
Alfredo will be glad you've spared his white sauce.
- Christopher Harley
I just don't like guacamole. Everything else I eat with the abandon of a man released from prison due to his conviction being overturned on DNA analysis.
- Derrick
And the reason I say I'm not a picky eater is that with the exception of Vietnamese food, I'll eat food from anywhere on the planet. I have friends who think it's strange that I eat sushi, Middle Eastern or African food. They can not get their heads around the fact that Cuban food is not the same as Mexican food. They say that I'm "inventive" when it comes to my dishes because I use fresh veggies/herbs instead of canned or dried ones.
- Admiral Anika
Janet, with the except of oatmeal, everything I've listed above has been served or offered to me within the last week. Still nasty.
- Admiral Anika
Okay, you are not 'picky' but per se a food snob? j/k
- Janet
Calling Anika a food snob is not fair to REAL food snobs!!!
- Christopher Harley
You must have been frequenting a LOT of potlucks if you've been served or offered all of the above within the last 7 days.
- Rochelle
I've met toddlers less fussy when it comes to food.
- Akiva Moskovitz
The only food I avoid is one prepared by minimum wage employees.
- Christopher Harley
When I first met Adrian 10 years ago, I would not eat fish. In my world fish was served two ways: fried to death or grilled with butter. He got me to try it again and I'm glad he did. Now, I eat all kinds of fish, even sushi. He could even tell you how when he first introduced me to sushi, I would eat albacore and unagi. Now, I eat just about everything except for uni & tako. Oh and mackerel...too fishy.
- Admiral Anika
Anika, that's not so bad. I think I have some acquaintances who could give you a real run for your money when it comes to "pickiness".
- ha3rvey (Ho)^3
How about "only eats fried chicken and hamburgers"? Every. Stinkin'. Day. Won't eat anything green. Has two kids.
- ha3rvey (Ho)^3
Potlucks, Rochelle? What? Anyway, thank you Harvey. I feel the same way. One of my friends who makes a huge production out of "let's cater the menu to Anika" even though I have no problem picking stuff out of my food and NEVER say anything rude when it's served, is acting all dramatic because I told her the yak at the Tibetan place is really good. She can't believe that anyone would eat yak on purpose. Whatever.
- Admiral Anika
Can you eat paella? If I couldn't, I'd have to kill myself.
- Christopher Harley
To be honest, this really sounds like more an OCD condition than anything else, Anika.
- Ben Parr
Janet, I don't think I'm a total food snob at least not to the extent of feeling the need to brag about organic this and that. I do prefer fresh over canned. I prefer new recipes over the pedestrian. If someone serves me something that seems lifted from the back of a can, I get a little sad.
- Admiral Anika
Anika, you listed off about 20 food items that you said you've been offered or served in the past week. So, given that, I would assume you're going to a lot of potlucks or other similar events with a lot of food present.
- Rochelle
Christopher, I can only eat paella when it doesn't have pork in it. Anything else in it varies drastically depending on who is making it. I find that my Spanish friends make it way different than my Brazilian ones. In mixed foods like that I can usually eat something I prefer not to as long as it's not a strong taste. One of the Cuban restaurants we go to will not use certain items if I ask.
- Admiral Anika
Like even though I don't like cooked carrots or peas, I will eat them in fried rice because they're supposed to be in there. But don't ask me to eat a German chocolate cake. That's just completely foul since it's made of everything that makes me gag.
- Admiral Anika
Well, on the bright-side, there's still a lot out there that you will eat.
- Christopher Harley
I should do a list like this. People say I'm picky. I say "I only eat real food."
- ha3rvey (Ho)^3
The thing that's funny is that several months ago I did a list like this of foods I liked and people were saying, "OMG, you eat that? That's nasty!"
- Admiral Anika
Yay, I never thought I'd meet someone with as strong convictions about what they eat as myself.
- Penguin It's Cold Outside
I dunno Anika. I would say you're definitely particular about what you won't eat. some people are particular about *everything* and others don't seem to be particular about anything at all. most of us fall in the middle somewhere.

And some last ones: milk, kettlecorn, syrup, papaya and banana-flavored stuff (except banana bread). :)

I'd say the only thing I won't knowingly eat is organs. Particularly filtering/digestive organs. The only exception to that is liver and I'll only eat it in boudain.

I am so happy to read all of this b/c I no longer feel like I'm the only particular person on the planet.

I ate too much water melon when I was 10 and become very sick. After that my family said I was too lazy to pick out the seeds. Jerks all of them, but I do love them still.
- Russellreno
Russell, you just reminded me. I also don't eat watermelon, though I'll eat watermelon flavored candies.
- Admiral Anika
OK, not liking watermelon is just weird. You can't survive the heat here in Texas without watermelon. :-P
- Jason Huebel
But it's grainy! And then the seeds...all that spitting. *shudder*
- Admiral Anika
I'm with you on watermelon! I've actually never once had a piece of watermelon, I just know I won't like it. I don't eat strawberries for much the same reason, but love anything and everything strawberry flavoured. I think my pickiness comes from food texture issues.
- Penguin It's Cold Outside
Yes, I'm huge on texture, Penguin, but it's weird. Like I won't eat pudding or yogurt for that reason. I can eat raw oysters, scallops (raw or cooked) and steamed mussels with mental preparedness, yet I can't eat smoked clams. I can eat cooked, raw and heat-smoked salmon, but lox makes me gag unless it's smothered in something.

LOL @Christopher & Akiva I'm used to Will spouting off from his high horse. It's amusing to me.

I have a friend who's about as picky as you. Whenever she visits she always finds time to eat my treats but turn her nose up at anything I'm cooking. I don't regard fussiness as admirable, that's all. I've seen people who are doing it rough. Maybe if you did too, you might change.
- Will Higgins™
I'm just as picky and I've never once thought it was an admirable thing. My question to you, Will, is why do I have to change? I'm generally polite and if presented with something at someone's home that I don't particularly care for, I'll try it and endure it if I have to, but when I'm on my own, who am I hurting by giving in to my silly whims?
- pea
I'm not saying anyone has to change! I'm just stating my opinion and clarifying why I feel the way I do about the matter.
- Will Higgins™
I apologize for being uncouth. Perhaps I could have tried starting a discussion about the merits of fussiness in a more respectful and mature manner.
- Will Higgins™
Not eating something because you dislike the taste, texture in the mouth, smell all seem legitimate. But having a revulsion, opinion about foods based on colour does seem a bit out there don't you think?
- Brian Sullivan
=) Will, like I said, I'm used to it now. It's just how you are. Last year it used to annoy me, but I know (hope?) that you mean well. But your comment was such a parental moment.
- Admiral Anika
I'm about as couth as Rush Limbaugh. And an egoist, and I always think I'm right. Funny you say that I'm parenty 'coz it's totally like that with my picky friend. People look to me and say 'she needs to do this and this, don't you agree?' and I always say 'I don't care what she does, she's a big girl now' EXCEPT with the eating thing. Then I'm always on her case.

I agree with many of those dislikes. Exceptions are mushrooms, peppers, and white sauces. The others I either hate or could easily do without.

And garlic doesn't belong on top of a bagel. And I don't like grape anything. Cherry flavored stuff is pretty close...

yikes. this is like choosing between an episode of Good Times or The Jeffersons; both good enough to watch if there's nothing else on.

I've only see each movie once. In the theatre and generally disliked each one. King Kong because it was an exercise in excess with effects and characters not good enough; Watchmen because it simply couldn't compete with the source material and the ending was weak.
- Jason Toney
I'd choose Watchmen solely because it's a beautiful film. I bought the BD for that reason (then cursed myself when I sat through it again).
- jbrotherlove
I went with Watchmen because the parts it gets right are very nice and I really really dislike King Kong.
- Jason Toney
King Kong disappointed me so much. I had been eagerly awaiting it, and it just felt so flat and uninteresting as a final result. Watchmen however exceeded expectations and was really entertaining. It took the best elements of the graphic novel and condensed it the best way a feature film could. Easy choice on this matchup.

The depiction of Doc Manhattan in the movie just breaks my heart. Much more engaging than he was in the graphic novel. I love Watchmen if only for that. King Kong? Lots of sound and fury signifying nothing. AND it had Jack Black. Bleh.
